Julia Chen - top 10 debut study

June 16, 2018

Introduction

I learned the word debut less than one years ago, it is called Elina Svitolina top 10 debut.

I had two onsite experience, one is in June 2016; and the second one is in June 2018. I just could not believe that I totally am different person with more confidence this year. I shared the story how I played Hackerrank contests and got first gold medal in 2017. I had chance to get myself ready in 2 weeks for system design, and actually I learned advanced web architecture using Microservice, I know how to quickly catch up a project like system design by asking help, get some private coaching from best coach in the world. I learned how to manage a few things in less than three weeks.

I also had chance to share my experience, how happy I am to help me as a mock interviewer. I did work with a Harvard graduate with computer science degree, taught him how to write code to apply SOLID principle. No one gave him the feedback before, so he could not tell what to work on next on this issue.

Certainly I still have some issues to deal with wishful thinking, and also a healthy doze of anxiety, but with my coach's help, I just quickly recover and go back to routine to do more practice, happy as I am like one month ago.

Top 10 debut

The study topic is how to advance myself from top 200 to top 100? top 100 to top 10?

In professional tennis sport, top 200 to top 100 is hard to stay with. You have to play qualification in order to get in big grand slam matches.

From top 100 to top 10, usually the club of top 10 is very hard to get in. Those players are more mature and do not show any emotion on the matches, and will catch up if the first set is down.

This May I quickly passed the phone screen using 28 minutes coding question. This is the first time in my history I can pass the phone screen. I did not do any code screen.

I need more practice in order to learn how to work on onsite experience with data structure and algorithm.

Am I top 200? Top 100? How can I advance myself to top 10 club?

Look at those can challenge? Can you image that I can design a can challenge drill for hard level algorithm? See one minutes I can solve how many hard level algorithm just by talking about the optimal solution and idea to solve it.

Leadership skills

I feel more confident to take rejection and also I am very happy to learn things, stay positive and open to new ideas.

I decide to learn those leadership principle and apply them to my daily work as well.

Elina Svitolina - Learn from a tennis player a time

June 3, 2017

Introduction

It is the great experience to start mocking experience after March, 2016.

One thing Julia like last 2 months is like having one to one study group. She was able to meet fifty people and suddenly she started to learn the algorithm through failure and success. Fifty people in the world helped her experience how hard the peer can work on the algorithm, or get stuck and need help; Julia learns a few things from one simple algorithm and data structure from different peers. She got a few of advises to help communication, she started to correct herself, like speaking slowly. She got some tip from one peer how to analyze time complexity better, another peer how to write white board testing, another peer how to be a systematic problem solver vs being a hacker; a few of peers shared with her their onsite experience and what are the most important.

Classified those 50 mocking experience into 3 rounds, first round she concerned about how to solve the problems, and then second round she started to notice the detail and the optimal solution she missed. Now she started third round, she found out that 30 minutes should be more conversational, add test cases before problem solving is most important and she should start to practice it.

Related to tennis sports, Julia likes to set a goal for mocking. Build a good ritual to structure her 30 minutes. Add test cases setup in first 10 minutes, speak slowly, get rid of anxiety in mocking.

Julia also likes to spend time to learn from one tennis player a time, not just focus on those top 10 players, or players she likes most. Tonight she likes to spend 20 minutes to study a tennis player, how she made great success in her career. It is a short time to do the research, and see how far she can go.

Elina Svitolina - top 10 debut

Feb. 25, 2017

Julia is a big fan of tennis, and she studied one tennis star a time. So, today she will spend 20 - 30 minutes to learn a new player, she never remembered her name before, called: Elina Svitolina.

Julia will study some statistics of the player, the coach, and the player's practice, the player's interview.

Here are videos she watched.

Julia's note

6:30 / 14:32 - it takes her time to move ranking to top 10. Not just go upward directly. Step by step, not rushing myself.

The top 5 or top 10 has more confidence to play against top 20 or 30, even she loses the first set, she does not show any emotion, wait for the chance to get back.

3 minutes video - know about Elina Svitolina - The move through Mutrid Madrid

Notes she took for the training, competing:

Always give your 100%. No matter how you feel, etc.

Actionable Item:

Spell error of word Madrid, Julia, spend 20 minutes to read the city of Madrid.
