How to Get a Team to Work Together

Here is the article I like to read.

Communicate

Respect individuality

Encourage creativity

Include a mix of genders

Hold trust-building exercises

Define roles

Don’t settle

More detail:

Encourage creativity

Brainstorming should be seen as a time to throw ideas out without placing judgement. The best ideas can be culled out later.

Hold trust-building exercises

And teams that appear more trustworthy have been shown to perform better then those who lack trust. Trust is a reciprocal feeling and one bad apple can really spoil the bunch.

Define roles

Effective teams require clearly-defined roles so that everyone knows what he or she is responsible for. This creates better team cohesion and productivity.

Don’t settle

The last piece of advice deals with how you staff your team. Know what you want in terms of team members, and keep looking until you find the candidates that are a perfect fit. If one person is wrong for the job, it can throw off the entire team dynamic.

But with every glow-up, there is a tear-down, and no recent young American prospect has experienced it as harshly as Townsend. Her fitness was questioned publicly, her choices of coaches and training base constantly undermined. The negativity took its toll on the otherwise private teenager, but recently she began to transform those doubts into fuel.

Taylor Townsend – WILL SHE EVER GET TO THE TOP TEN?

Here is the link.

Despite the versatility in her game, many have been critical of her physical fitness. If Townsend is serious about her goal to reach the top ten and win the majors, she will have to improve her physical fitness. Yet, that is not the only factor holding her back; she, needs a little more sting on her serve and she needs to inject some pace in her groundstrokes more frequently to keep her opponents off balance.

Most dangerous way to do is to put one basket. Also 40 to 50 years and retire safely.

51 days safety. Be entrepreneur is risky.

Try 10 crazy ideas - only 2 ideas work.
Multiple streams income is more safe.

Risk-aversion & permission to fail

Let it mock you. Give them permission to trial and fail.

Introduction

I went to Amazon Vancouver onsite on August 15, 2019. I like to write a blog to document my experience inside Amazon building.

Amazon No. 1 building in Seattle

August 31, 2019

Introduction

I went to Seattle onsite interview for Amazon on June 6, 2018. I like to write a blog to document my interview day and building No. 1.

Building No. 1

Microsoft building 35 - 2008

August 31, 2019

Introduction

It is my idea to write a blog about Microsoft building 35. I went to onsite back in 2008, over 10 years ago. I like to write down something to celebrate 11 years, I learned the first time the onsite interview, I only had two rounds of interview, and I learned that it was hard for me to survive to last round.

Building 35

I still remembered the interview day. We had lunch, and also I got a free Microsoft office 2008. I am still using the office version 2008 right now in my home laptop computer.

building 27 Facebook instagram MPK

August 31, 2019

Introduction

It is my dream place to work for in 2019, less than two months, starting from my phone screen to my onsite interview on August 20, 2019. As an adult, I learn to write story for every building I fall in love to and being part of my life. It is called building 27, MPK.

My impression and memory

It is most challenging place to work, and I like the environment and just could not believe that the place is so exciting to watch people start to rush into the building around 8:30 am. I went to the MPK two hours early, so I can spend time to experience the work place.

I signed in after one hour, and amazed that I can get wi-fi internet service as well. I sent a few pictures to share my wechat group.

Count how many problems to solve

August 31, 2019

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. I like to look into the issues I have and then figure out how to solve those problems.

Problems

I had tooth issues, and then I extracted three teeth early in 2019. I noticed that I had weight issue, my weight came back to 192 lbs in July 2019. I worked hard to lose 8 lbs, now it is 184 lbs. I also had some issues with arm and shoulder starting from January 2019, after more than three months tennis sports, I felt much better right now.

So many problems. I need to fix one by one.

Project planning - Get a software engineer job from Facebook in MPK

August 31, 2019

Introduction

I started to learn project management through youtube.com videos, called project.com. One thing I like to do is to talk about the project planning. It is almost impossible for me to think about less than 6 months ago. But I had an onsite interview this August 20, 2019 from Facebook instagram. I like to learn how to do a good project planning. Make things happen, starting from small things.

Project management

It is the most exciting project in the world. I like to work on most challenging job in the world.

There are so many things I have to learn and figure out. First of all, it is the feedback; I went to San Francisco and attended the onsite interview, I met all engineers and managers. Yesterday it is my 10th day to celebrate my first Facebook onsite interview, I sent out all invitations to those interviewers.

Step 1, send out all Linkedin invitations to the interviewers. I need to build my network.

Step 2, study linked.com premium version. I need to look into market and learn the basis.

Step 3, take some project management courses

Step 4, solve 200 problems on Leetcode.com

Step 5, write discussion post for at least 50 algorithms.

Wealth like tree, start from a seed.

I like to call that project Isaiah 40:31, Soar on Wings like Eagles.

Isaiah 40:31 - But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

Or I can call the project using Canada tennis star Bianca Andresscu's name. I like to study her more and learn from her how to advance ranking from 127 to top 30 in 2019. So I should call "Bianca 2019"

I also like her interview called "If you believe in yourself you can do big things!".

How To Fail Faster -- And Why You Should

Here is the article.

weekly status report - August 18 - August 24, 2019

August 29, 2019

Introduction

It is a good idea for me to learn how to manage myself as a software programmer. I think that I need to work on more coding, learn how to use a test case to explain my idea and walk through the test case at least once. Another thing is to learn to read a book related to system design, choose a few good videos to watch, and share on my blog as well.

Weekly status report

I like to demonstrate how I build up my curious level as a software engineer, and also remove my bias, and catch up some technology learning as well.

How many things I should put in the check list of weekly status report?

Here are a list I like to use:

1. Mock interviews on interviewing.io;
2. Code and project I work on for my current full time job;
3. Leetcode algorithms I work on;
4. Books I read
5. Videos I choose to watch

Another list is related to personal finance

Another list is related to project management learning

Another list is related to personal health, weight control, and nutrition

And more

10 practices to write binary search algorithm

August 29, 2019

Introduction

I like to spend time to write code for rotated sorted array, and I like to write more than 10 solutions. I think that it is better for me to train myself to write code, instead of reading books, and working on other projects.

10 practices

I will write down what I learn through those 10 practices.

33. Search in Rotated Sorted Array - idea 2

Sept. 4, 2019

I wrote the algorithm using C#, here is the discussion post with title "C# Find pivot index first and then apply binary search practice in 2019".

It is the challenge task to master binary search algorithm. What I did is to ask how to solve the algorithm in mock interview as an interviewer first on Sept. 2, 2019, and then I spent 30 minutes to learn from the interviewee, and then I wrote the solution by myself after the mock interview.
The interviewee has 10 years experience and very good understanding to test his own code, so he thoroughly tested the code in the mock interview. Here is my blog to show his python code.
I took the same approach and wrote a C# solution.
Here are highlights:
  1. Failed test case [1, 3], target 2, TLE error; Inside while loop, if/ else if is not good design, the clause else if is potential timeout;
  2. Failed test case [], target 5. Array is null or length zero checking is added;
  3. Learn design of pivot index search algorithm from the interviewee.
  4. Default pivot index search return is 0.
Test cases
I like to write down a few test cases I came cross when I practice the algorithm in 2019.
[], 5 - null exception
[3, 1], target is 1, should return 1
[1, 3], target is 2, good test case to test TLE error, dead loop

The Coding Interview: What to Expect

Here is the article. I like to spend 30 minutes to read.

Advice

To understand the process, difficulty, and best way to prepare for a coding interviews at a top tech company, I talked to people I know who interviewed with and got hired by Facebook and Dropbox. I talked to a few recruiters, including one from Facebook, about the interview process and how to prepare for the phone screen and onsite. Additionally, I reviewed various articles people have written about their coding interview prep:

How good taste of Facebook onsite interview?

August 29, 2019

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. It costed more than $1500 dollar for airline tickets, hotel and also rental car for two days, parking, and three meals a day. I also like to write something about how good taste of Facebook onsite interview. It is 7 days to celebrate my first Facebook onsite interview.

How good taste of Facebook onsite interview?

I had an international trip and it only took me less than three hours to fly to San Francisco international airport. The rental car was super efficient, and the distance from international airport to the hotel and Menlo park is less than 20 miles.

I just enjoyed the flight on August 18, Sunday afternoon, and then rented a car, drove to San Mateo Chinese restaurant to meet all my friends at 6:30 PM. I arrived on time, even though my GPS is too old to help me find the right place, I figured out by driving on the same route a few times. Let me call this sweat memory to meet friends, and also learn from those friendship lasting more than 18 years.

I checked in best hotel called Pullman hotel, which is high standard and luxury one. I enjoyed the swimming pool from 10:00 PM to 11:10 PM. I like the workout, and really enjoy the weather. It just brought me back those memory to swim in Florida.

I will add more content here later.

It is my drill to work on English study, one thing I can do is to play the same video again and write down new words I like to learn, and how the professional tennis star express themselves. I like to learn from Bianca Andreescu and also like to take a break to learn how to interview and be interviewed.

One more learning

This is the fourth time I watched the video. I have to push myself to write down some notes, and see how many new things I can observe this time.

Here is the video link called "The rise of Canadian tennis sensation Bianca Andreescu | The National Interview".

Case study: System design two week study

August 28, 2019

Introduction

I like to put together a short blog how I conduct system design study in two week range, how I learn so well and start to develop strong interest to continue the study.

Case study

I started to push myself to learn so many topics from August, 2019. I took one week vacation (August 12 to August 20) to prepare two onsite interviews, Amazon and Facebook. I just could not believe that I learned so well this year from August 10 to August 20, 2019.

Case study: Small project using CSS, Javascript and Jquery

August 28, 2019

Introduction

It is the first time I like to push myself at work to work better on project management. I like to review carefully what I do this past week, so I can figure out what to do next.

CSS and JavaScript

It is tough life to be a software programmer. I can run a website without writing a lot of code for long time. But I choose to push myself to work on basics, write code every day, and hold strong belief that hard work beats talent. Today  I like to write a case study how I solve problems to add features on website.

I got a small assignment from my team, a market team member likes to redesign the website. I spend this week to refresh myself about CSS, html and JavaScript. Today I wrote some JavaScript and I enjoyed so much to write code.

I like to write a case study and explain why a programmer needs to be a strong problem solver first, and then he/ she can do the job so quickly.

Stay tuned. I will add some content here later.

I have to be very patient to observe anything new in terms of problem solving. I like to demonstrate how I solve a small task to add some content to the website.

How I approach some assignment?

How I prepare myself for problem solving?

How I write code to solve the problems?

Can I qualify to be a web designer?

I like to record my problem solving process, and see if I should work on improvement or not.

Here is the github repository I like to share.

Extra 30 lb weight

August 28, 2019

Introduction

It is my health research. I like to take the advice from my friend Dr. Jin, and then work on my weight control. Last weekend I started to learn to be a fan of tennis star Bianca, and I like to keep the same weight as Bianca, Bianca's height is 170 cm.

Extra 30 lbs weight

I do believe that weight control is a good research topic for me to look into. I like to look into all kinds of issues related to obesity weight, and I also like to look into project management issues, and see how I can reduce the stress from my full time work, and push myself to stay healthy weight, normal weight first.

I do think that once I can master data structure and algorithm problem solving, I should work on other research area as well. Weight control is perfect for me to work on.

Compared to Dr. Jin, I have at least 30 lbs more in weight. Do I need those extra 30 lbs? I wrote a blog on this issue.

Advice from my friend Dr. Jin

August 28, 2019

Introduction

It is most important advice from my friend Dr. Jin, weight control and stay healthy. I met Dr. Jin on August 19 and we spent one hour to have short conversation.

Advice from my friend

I told my friend that I came to California and had an onsite interview from Facebook. She was so surprised.

Dr. Jin told me that there are three stages to plan, 52 years to 60 years, 60 years old to 67 years old, 67 years old and beyond.

Here are some facts about weight.

Dr. Jin, 165 cm, weight is around 140 lb.
Julia, 167 cm, weight is around 184 lb.

I weigh 40 lbs more.

How to save to prepare for retirement?

It is topic we discussed together. How can we save money in order to be able to retire?

Dr. Jin is a project manager for Johnson and Johnson. Compared to her job, her income and her job experience, I am the real player to challenge the game. She got Ph.D. degree back in 2003 from University of Michigan, but I did not make it even though I spent more years on Florida Atlantic university graduate study from 2002 to 2012.

I like the challenge and that is the reason I was so excited to meet instgram team in Meno Park campus.

From 2001 to 2019

We met back in 2001, and we attended the same church. We used to be roommates more than 10 months.

Dr. Jin left Florida around in 2004, and I left Florida in 2010.

Four meetings together

2008
I visited San Francisco in 2008 when Dr. Jin invited me to stay at her house, and we went together to visit Google and Yahoo campus together. She also invited a lot of Chinese friends to have lunch together who used to study or work in Florida.

I went back to China and F1 visa in Shanghai. Here is the blog.

2010
My friend and I stopped by Pleasant in 2010 April when we drove from Florida to Vancouver, 4500 miles road trip.

2014
I met Dr. Jin in 2014 when I visited my sister and my nephew.

2019
Now it is the fourth time we met together last 10 years. We used to be roommate from 2000 to 2001 in the city of Boca Raton, Florida.
