Buy Nothing Groups = Random Acts of Kindness All Day Long

Dec. 31, 2018

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. I came cross this idea called buy nothing and share on facebook.com. I like the idea, I was shamed by myself to throw so many clothes in 2014 in Florida since I like to empty the space to give renters to use. Here is the article.

Case study

In Oct. 2014, I did spend over $250.00 US dollar to rent a car to stop by Florida, and then I did not spend efforts to donate those clothes. I opened those hundred items I made purchase, from 1999 to 2001, I still remembered the price I paid, and some of them I only wear a few times.

I talked to the new neighbor and she complained the rent was too high. I even did not notice and ask her if she likes to choose some clothes. I just went over so many bags of cloths and threw into huge garbage can in the community.

Actionable Item

It is very important to be a good citizen, avoid wasting time and money. Control spending, and also I need to learn how to share frequently. Every year or every two years.

Homeowners who just walk away

Dec. 30, 2018

Introduction

It is tough time for me to admit that I cannot make money to afford my own housing in Vancouver area, so I am glad to rent instead of owning any real estate in Canada. I am planning to find a remote small city to live somewhere in Canada in the future if I plan to make a purchase of home. One thing is to read some article about home owners and how they make decision back in 2009.

The day to calculate the asset

Dec. 30, 2018

Introduction

I had hard time to collect payment in December for sponsor application project. I had one week to stay at home to work on person finance. Now it is December 30, 2018. I like to calculate my asset.

Patience please

I learn from work. Every year we have an inventory day. We count all inventory items and then I sometimes help them to do adjustment and some analysis.

I just got Mint.com installed on my mobile phone. I also need to count cash with myself. I have to count coins and paper cash as well, in Chinese yuan and Canadian dollar and US dollars.

Case study: 1994 to 1996 two years full time job as a software programmer

Dec. 30, 2018

Introduction

I like to carefully review what I made a living from 1992 to 1994 in the city of Shanghai. The consumer behavior stayed same from 1992 to 2018 spanning over 26 years. I like to learn how to start all over again and be disciplined and start to learn how to build wealth.

Facts to review

I worked for research lab in Shanghai from 1992 to 1994, a startup software company from 1994 to 1996.

1988 - 1989  80 yuan/ month
1992 - 1994  120 - 180 yuan/ month
1994 - 1995  1000 yuan/ month
1995 - 1996  1800 yuan/ month

Big item purchases

From 1994 to 1996
1. 2000 yuan TV
2. Bicycle - 500 yuan, I ride bicycle to work every day round trip
3. 1500 yuan necklace
4. 1000 yuan 9999 ring
5. Grocery - monthly expenses
6. Rent $250/ month - two month salary I earned to work for Shanghai research lab, the lab paid free dorm room to live from 1994 to 1996.
7. A trip to Shanghai in 1988 for a group of 6
8. 200 US dollar = 1800 yuan application fee to USA graduate school
9. TOEFL/ GRE test
10. TOEFL/ GRE preparation class $400 each
11. A few more gold 9999 items, ear sets, pendant called Horse and Success. more than $1000 yuan purchase
12. Training NT operating system in Shanghai Jiaotong university. A few hundreds of yuan.

House problem

From 1992 to 1996, I should challenge myself to solve housing problems. In research lab, there are 4 condos purchased and we have over 10 people new graduates to share three units. Late the condo was given away to those outstanding employees as young talent.

I challenged myself to quit the job and went to job market to find a job for myself and stayed two years. I booked newspaper of xinming evening newspaper, but I did not try to solve house problem.

Even if I can not purchase a home in the city of Shanghai, I should be able to purchase one in the city of Yichun from 1994 to 1996. I chose to purchase gold necklace, ear set, and pendant, rings.

Lesson learned

I remembered that I tried to mail TV set back to city of Yichun in 1996. I paid taxi to Shanghai rail station and then wasted money since the driver tricked me to expensive mailing place.

I break the law called delay of gratification. I do not treat hard earn money carefully and with respect.  I gave away one year salary from 1992 to 1993 - over 1,000 yuan ring to my mom. It was early in my career, but I did not learn that the job was so risky and not stable. I just took the risk the whole career without considering options carefully.

Case study: a gold 9999 necklace purchased in 1995

Dec. 29, 2018

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. I came cross this receipt and the purchase I did in 1995. I like to do a short case study on this purchase.

Case study

By my research, the necklace has double the value. Now it should worth more than 3000 Chinese Yuan for 9999 10克 gold.

Here is the update of Gold price in China retail store.

I like to provide facts of my salary history to show the value of necklace:

I worked for research lab in Shanghai from 1992 to 1994, a startup software company from 1994 to 1996.

1988 - 1989  80 yuan/ month
1992 - 1994  120 - 180 yuan/ month
1994 - 1995  1000 yuan/ month
1995 - 1996  1800 yuan/ month

Actionable Items

I did spend more than one month salary to purchase a necklace, and a ring. The ring costed me a month of salary, and then I gave it to my mom. Since I felt that it was too heavy to wear when I worked on the computer.

I chose to leave the job in Shanghai research lab, and then worked for a startup company. My ex-coworkers in the reserach lab started to save money from the salary and then purchased a home in the city of Shanghai from 1996 to 2001, they left research lab and went for high pay job from 3000 - 8000 yuan maybe.

I decided to apply for graduate school in United States instead of continuing to work in the city of Shanghai from 1994 to 1996.

How do I evaluate my finance activities?

I think that I already had a lot of alarming sign to control spending. I should save those two year salary since 120 yuan is the salary I used to make in research lab, which I could cover all expenses. I should save 80% of salary, but I spent on grocery, and gold, English education, and also give away money to my mom.

I spent most of them on food, clothing, attending TOEFL/ GRE study, and applied the admission of school. I gave away money to my mom, a gold ring costed more than 1 year salary from 1992 to 1993.

I should start to learn person finance back in 1994. I had hard time to learn and under stress of working and learning technologies.

I tried to comfort my mom since she was depressed since the old home was destroyed and that was home she lived with my father over 20 years. She was 61 years old and she got her one eye damaged because of mistakes she made.

At the end of two years full time work in August 1996, I purchased an airline ticket to Florida, and paid over 8000 yuan for one way ticket, I had nothing left.

I sold a less than two years old TV costed me two month salary $2,000. And I paid rent $250/ month, the same size of room of next door shared by three or four man, under stairways from second floor to first floor, the bus driver rented the place to sleep in weekdays.

I lived in the biggest city in the world, Shanghai from 1984 to 1996.

Big item purchase:
From 1994 to 1996
1. 2000 yuan TV
2. Bicycle - 500 yuan, I ride bicycle to work every day round trip
3. 1500 yuan necklace
4. 1000 yuan 9999 ring
5. Grocery - monthly expenses
6. Rent $250/ month - two month salary I earned to work for Shanghai research lab, the lab paid free dorm room to live from 1994 to 1996.
7. A trip to Shanghai in 1988 for a group of 6
8. 200 US dollar = 1800 yuan application fee to USA graduate school
9. TOEFL/ GRE test
10. TOEFL/ GRE preparation class $400 each
11. A few more gold 9999 items, ear sets, pendant called Horse and Success. more than $1000 yuan purchase
12. Training NT operating system in Shanghai Jiaotong university. A few hundreds of yuan.

House problem

It is also good advice to learn marketing and sales as early as possible in your career. I spent over 4 hours to listen one of making money video while I worked on personal finance and wrote blogs about my study.

Case study: 2008 February 26 USA visa application in Shanghai

Dec. 29, 2018

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. I did go over my paper work and looked for something I missed. I noticed that I had this citic debit card on this payment 943 yuan, I did some research on this case; but I found a big case to work, USA visa application in 2008 February 25.

Case study of my USA visa

It is hardest time in my life. I had to go back to China and applied F1 visa in Shanghai, China in 2008. I thought that I may not get the student visa, and I decided to go back to China in January, 2018 and I applied the visa in February.

I had H1-B visa in 2007 and then I decided to apply F1-visa again. I learned that in order to get the status back to F1-visa again, I need to get super smart this time. This is my last time I had to make things work and wait for next opportunity, since I just started Canada skilled worker application back in December 2007.

Canada immigration

I like to go back to United States, and continue to study and process my Canada skilled immigration paper work in 2008.

Actionable Items

As 2018 comes to a close, I always appreciate the opportunity to pause and reflect on the year and beyond - to give thanks for the bright spots and find lessons in the challenges.

Here is my favorite memories in last 10 years. I had so many memories in 2008. I spent over one month in the city of Yichun, and two weeks in the city of Shenzhen.

I like to calculate those expenses as minimum to make a living in my life. I should be able to pay visa fee, airline ticket back to Florida from China.

I should spend time to work on my personal finance after 2001, and in 2008 I should invest a condo in the city of Yichun.

In 2002 I was too lucky to get into Motorola research intern starting, I did not learn how hard it should be to make a living in United States.

Case study: Close stock account and IRA stock account in 2010 March 10

Dec. 29, 2018

Introduction

I started to invest on stock market from year 2000. But I decided to quit in 2009 since I had to handle my appeal for leave case. I told myself to concentrate on immigration.

Case study

I learned that it was a bad decision. For me to learn something, specially on stock market, it was so painful for me to learn that I lost $3000 on the stock I chose in 2009, $3000 on 401 K I picked at work in 2007. After I came back to USA to get F1 visa in 2008, I lost more than $6,000 on stock account. I will do a case study and push myself to learn how to understand the economy and stock market.

To close the account, say goodbye forever to the stock market. I did that in 2009.

Actionable Items

I like to make March 10 as a remembrance day for my personal finance. I like to push myself to learn economics. At least I should understand the basic cycles and learn how to play with the cycles.

I should stay open to stock market and learn to play the market as a long term investor. Since the time was on my side in 2010.

I closed IRA stock account in March 10, 2010. I signed the form called SDIRA Distribution Request.

Case study: 2009 Composite 1099 statement

Dec. 29, 2018

Introduction

I started to invest on stock market from year 2000. But I decided to quit in 2009 since I had to handle my appeal for leave case. I told myself to concentrate on immigration.

To close the account, say goodbye forever to the stock market. I did that in 2009.

I did not spend time to download all statements. Right now, I know that back in 2007 and 2008, how busy I was in terms of working for a startup. But in other hand, as a person with some management experience, I do not do the basic things.

I could not know how much money I started, how much money I put into stock market from my checking account.

Basic steps to learn

I have to start to learn how to do better work in terms of decision making in terms of personal finance.

Download statements, and read the market, and analyze the market, and make some sound decision, hold on 72 hours, and consult some advice if possible, and then make a small step first, date my money until I learn.

Case study: 2014 June NYCB home equity line update

Dec. 29, 2018

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. I came cross this letter in 2014 and was updated that my home equity line was no long available for me to withdraw. I like to do case study.

Case study

What I like to do is to check timing, how the decision was made based on the market. The letter was dated on 2014 June. Here is the folder.

I did not make any purchase of home in British Columbia from 2010 to 2014 since I know there is risk for me to take a loan. Even though the line is available for me to invest another property.

My home equity line was opened from 2006 and it lasted 15 years. The line amount is $58,000 dollars. Let us take a look the property tax from 1999 to 2018, and see what was the status of 2014. I had balance of $34,000 dollars.

It is easy to borrow but it is hard to return. I tried to find a very good business to invest from 2010 to 2014. I had hard time to proceed on the project.

I learned that it was hard for me to return since I roughly knew my weakness. I spent money on USA tuition $2,000 dollars and called it quit from 2010 to 2011 on my Ph.D. study, I paid using rental income; and then I spend money on the vacation to USA in 2014, $1500 dollars; I spent money on cloth shopping in USA from 2011 to 2014. Sometimes I paid using US credit card, I did not save the statements so I could not tell how much I spent.

The market in 2014 actually is not in the bottom of the market, 2012 is the bottom of the market actually.

Actionable Items

I was a single person. I was reminded by my sister in 2018 that I do not have high responsibility, therefore all my relatives try to get something from me. They do not want to pay their own bill. I can be easily emotionally manipulated by my relatives. My sister is a single mom and responsible for her teenage daughter, so she is more responsible and controlling of her expenses .

I will conduct some research and figure out my approach to solve the problems. Right now, I just educate myself using audio book Think and Grow Rich Audiobook 11 hours.

Case study: Florida palm beach condo property tax

Dec. 29, 2018

Introduction

It is my intentional training to help myself to get used to ask why, think about how to get the detail. I like to do the case study of the condo I owned in Palm beach and then property tax for the condo.

Case study of property tax

I learned that I have to work on my personal business research. Last night I went over all pieces of paper work I kept. I found out two pages with property from 1998 to 2013.

It is easy for me to find last 10 years property tax using palm beach papa website. So I put those information together. I can easily tell all property tax I have made from 1999 to 2018.

It is a small milestone for me to learn to be a good project manager. I like to figure out how many small things I can do in terms of management.

Actionable Items

It is important for me to save all bank statement, bills I have to pay.

I need to be a financial responsible person. I need to make sure that I pay what I should do, and do not pay relatives bill.

I cannot use the money to purchase things wanted, not needed. Otherwise I will have nothing left. And also I will not have any wealth after many years hard working, and no way to retire.

Three ideas to date my money in 2019

Dec. 28, 2018

Introduction

I spend last week of 2018 to work on my personal finance. I start to learn how to document my expenses carefully, and I like to cut down food expenses. I like to learn how to invest.

Date my money

I like to come out 10 ideas to date my money. I need to analyze my spending problem, separate wants from needs.

1. One thing is to find all possible receipts and I like to add all clothing expense from 2010 to 2018. I found $4,000 Canadian dollar receipt. I like to find more and figure out how to find them.

2. I like to find all missing saving from 2010 to 2018. I could not save 30% of my net income. I like to do some research how to find them.

3. I need to practice to set daily shopping upper limit to $100.00. I need to learn how to date my money, seek ideas how to save and train myself to think alternative, try to save 10% each time.

Actionable Items

Should I set cap value for clothing shopping?

I already spent over $4000 Canada dollars on clothes from 2010 to 2018, and I still look for more receipts and items from bank statements.

Good quality cloth lasts forever. I work as a software programmer, most of time I stay quiet whole day and do not need to communicate with coworkers at all. No one pays attentions to me, not even about what cloth I wear.

"The only difference between the men who earn big incomes and those who earn small incomes is that those earning big incomes decided to earn more. They are the people who made it their business to earn more."

Earl Nightingale

"We are all self-made, but only the successful will admit it!"

Own everything you do. Celebrate your achievements and embrace your mistakes and failures as well.

The checklist

1. Our rewards in life will always be in exact proportion to our contribution, our service.

2. The key to every human being's success lies in his mind - the gold mine between his ears.

I need to learn how to build a habit to document my expenses. I start the first time to track down how many kilometers for those $65.00 Canadian dollar purchase.

Follow up

I added another tank of gas on Jan. 27, 2018, the mileage is 169046 KM. 218 KM for $65.48 Canadian dollars, $0.30/ KM.

Date your money - No. 2

Dec. 27, 2018

Introduction

It is a simple idea to purchase more Canadian dollars using US dollars. So I cover my loss in my three transactions over years. I also like to learn how to date my money.

One deposit

I went out to deposit a check from USA checking account to my Canadian USA checking account. I plan to purchase Canadian dollars later. It will take 21 business day to go through the transaction.

Actionable Items

I need to practice small transactions so I learn the importance to play with the market. Be consistent.

It takes 20 business day to process deposit. I checked on Jan. 30, 2019, the US dollar $3,000 is available now. I like to purchase Canadian dollars in short future.

Date your money - No. 1

Dec. 27, 2018

Introduction

I have one week break since it is holiday season. I like to go out to learn how to do business in this cold winter weather. More than two months ago, I spent time to do case study of $17000 US dollars to purchase Canadian dollars in April 23, 2010. Here is the blog. What I learn is to date your money. Try to find a good solution to cut loss to minimum.

Go out to purchase Canadian dollars

I went out to kingmark to purchase Canadian dollars. It is my baby step to learn how the exchange rate goes up and down. How should I do the work and make myself better?

Dec 27, 2018

Rate: 1.350 / invert rate: 0.7407407
Scotia bank: 1.3257

Actionable  Item

It is my baby step to train myself to learn personal finance. Get educated, learn my own mistakes first.

The difference between kingmark and Scotia bank is 0.0243, in other words, 2.43%. My transaction in 2010 with $17,000 US dollars, if I choose to exchange with kingmark, then I can save 413 dollars.

Learning personal finance takes patience and also I need to push myself to think slowly, think one thing a time.

Think about how many square foot in the city of Yichun

Dec. 27, 2018

Introduction

It is very simple thing to do. But I have to write down and push myself to train myself, do not get emotional. Think carefully, hold principle as a business woman. Discipline myself to identify wants and needs.

Do not buy luxury

I used to purchase a super expensive SONY laptop $1800 US dollars in 2002. I did not have permanent residentship in USA, I may not have income at all. I could not control impulsive to shop a laptop with 12 months interest free in 2002. One thing I can do is to think about $1800 US dollars, exchange it to Chinese yuan, and it was $16,200. In 2002, the home price in my home town Yichun is about $800 yuan. That is 200 square foot home.

The tip is to calculate how much I can pay for the home in the city of Yichun.

Do not give away cash gift

I used to give away cash as red packet in 2012 vacation Chinese spring festive, $2000 yuan each time. I paid for food $4000 yuan as well. Think about the value of the money, how much I can purchase in term of square foot in the city of Yichun.

The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson (animated book summary) - Be Better Than Yesterday

Here is the link.

Simple productive actions, repeated consistently over time. That in a nutshell is the slight edge. The slight edge shows us that little steps compounded over time do make a difference. Things you do every day, the things that don't look dramatic, that don't even look like they matter, do matter. They not only make a difference - they make ALL the difference. When you want to watch TV today or tomorrow, you can make a choice to go for a short walk. Anyone can do that. But what is easy to do, is also easy not to do. You won't be any healthier or fit the next day, if you go for that walk. But what about a year from now? Three years? What if every time you felt like watching TV you took that walk instead, what do you think would happen in a span of three years? You would definitely see the difference.

Case study: 2014 my used car purchase

Dec. 26, 2018

Case study: My car maintenance

Dec. 26, 2018

Introduction

It is hard for me to write a case study about my car maintenance from 2010 to 2018. I carefully review those expenses and also my experience to drive the car with problems, I think that it is very alarming and the topic is far more serious compared to personal finance.

Am I a problem solver?

I went in this Chinese auto shop for engine oil change in 2010 first week in Canada. Since I imported my Ford Explorer in Canada, I need to install day night on my car. Compared to Canadian tire $120/ hour rate, I found the Chinese autoshop charges $60/ hour. I chose to go for the cheap hour rate.

Did I make good choice? I did not know how complicated the work shop was and how dangerous situation I may put myself in because of fraud and all kinds of surprising incidents one after the other.

I went to Chinese auto shop for oil change in 2012. After one week, I got the signal light to check brake fluid. So I went to Richmond Ford dealership for the check. I was told that brake fluid is empty. I paid brake fluid added to my car.

I went back to the Chinese auto shop later on, and I complained to the owner of Chinese auto shop. The owner told me that mechanic was not happy since I did not do other repair he asked. So he let my brake fluid empty.

The one is the small incident, costed me over $100 dollars and other inconvenience. But I still chose to stay with the Chinese auto shop.

And then there are more strange things to happen again and again. $500 for rotor change, and numerous repairs on the way.

How to deal with fraud?

Dec. 26, 2018

Introduction

I am doing my personal finance research. I have so many classmates and ex-coworkers are so successfully in China, USA and Canada. I am finding myself only struggling and I like to find out the possible issues. I just do the research from basics, book keeping my expenses, and carefully review what are possible thinking process, how I make decision, who influence me etc. One thing came to my mind is how to understand scam, how I respond the fraud?

My attitude to fraud

I have problems to deal with fraud. I do not take it seriously and learn so many lessons. I mixed the business with my emotion; and I could not tell what is wrong, what is correct, and it is so hard for me to review those incidents.

It is very dangerous road for me to stop and be super carefully who to work with.

I like to do a few case study on my experience and how I learn most important things compared to cost, pricing etc.

You are still the same

Dec. 26, 2018

Introduction

I like to write a story, it is based on the true story; I like to review it as a research and education purpose, it is for personal finance research purpose. "You are still the same." My young sister made comment on me in 2012 or 2014 my China vacation. I gave out thousands dollars away as red packet, and also gifts I spent over a thousand Canadian dollars. My young sister did not give away gifts at all, she tried to protect her income and reduce expenses.

My spending problem

There is one issue related to self-esteem. If you have low self-esteem, then you may try to spend money to please your friends.

I worked on minimum wage a lot of years, and also part time a lot of years. I understood that the business mindset is so important. Try to create more income, control your expenses, document all expenses, analyze myself as a consumer, how to make purchase decision.

In 2001, I spent money to take my relatives to Shanghai for 3 day trip, I paid over $5000 yuan for a trip with a group of six people for train tickets, a personal with college degree in China in the city of Yichun, 2 years salary I guessed. Now back to 2012, I was still the same person, spending 18 months full time savings for one month vacation, $5000 Canadian dollars.

It is time for me to learn to be a responsible person.

How to be a frugal person?

Dec. 26, 2018

Introduction

Recently I did calculation I save less than 15% net income last 10 years from 2010 to 2018. I like to be a frugal person. I like to push my saving rate to 60%. How can I do it?

Highly efficient person

1. Look good but going nowhere

I need to get rid of those emotional shopping for myself. I did case study for 2011 Dec., I shopped $600 clothing for myself in one month alone. Those clothing cost will easily add up to $3,000 dollars. Here is the blog.

2. No more vacation without a budget. $1000 maximum amount for a vacation. No vacation before I control my compulsive shopping. I did case study my vacation, I spent over $4500 Canadian dollars.

3. No more car maintenance over $200 dollars for unnecessary service. No more driving around. Cut cost down to $3,000 dollars/ every year.

4. Grocery shopping - cut expenses to maximum $300/ month, count all cash shopping, Costco shopping monthly.
