Stern business school

January 11, 2020

Introduction

I came cross the wechat post of my advisor prof. Jie Wu, and his daughter graduated from New York medical school and also MBA from stern business school. So I like to take a look about Stern business school. I still remembered in 2001 Christmas party, I went with other 10 PH.D. students to attend family Christmas party.

How mental health alters decision making

Here is the article.

All of us are wired to seek rewards and avoid losses, and that remains true in people with mental health disorders. But in those people the nature of the risks and rewards and the way they activate the brain is skewed.
That altered decision-making creates challenges for people trying to make good decisions for their own health, whether it's overcoming depression, anxiety or eating disorders.

2. I’m interested in fixed income / bond ETFs.  Which bond ETFs would you recommend?
There are over 200 bond ETFs, focused on different segments of the US and international markets. Among those ETFs, here are some that attracted most assets over time:
  • BND Vanguard Total Bond Market ETF.  Its expense ratio is 0.05%. It covers bonds that are offered for sale in the US.
  • AGG iShares Core US Aggregate Bond ETF.  Its net expense ratio is 0.06%.  It represents bonds that are sold in the US.
  • BNDX Vanguard Total International Bond ETF.  Its expense ratio is 0.11%.  It provides a convenient way to get broad exposure to non-US dollar denominated investment-grade bonds.
  • BSV Vanguard Short-Term Bond ETF.  Its expense ratio is 0.07%.  It covers  US investment-grade bonds with a dollar-weighted average maturity of 1 to 5 years.

Washington state running start program

I like to read 10 minutes about the program. Here is the link.

Running Start is a dual credit enrollment program in Washington, Hawaii, New Hampshire, Montana and Illinois[1] which allows high school juniors and seniors to attend college courses numbered 100 or above, while completing high school. It is similar to other dual enrollment programs common at public and private colleges and universities in other states like Concurrent Enrollment or Dual Enrollment. Running Start credits are held in equally high regard as Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate.

The Running Start program in Washington state was piloted in the early 1990s and officially approved to begin in the fall of 1993.
Running Start provides up to two years of paid tuition at any of Washington's community and technical colleges, and at Central Washington University, Eastern Washington University, Washington State University, and Northwest Indian College.[9] High school juniors who can pass the entrance exam for a local community college may take part or all of their coursework at the community college. Successfully passing a course earns a student both high school and college credit.

Running Start students can complete a substantial number of their first two years of college credits early. After high school, they pay for fewer community college credits before moving on to four-year institutions; It is possible for a motivated student to earn both a high school diploma and a two-year college associate's degree simultaneously.

Life is tough to be a book reader

January 10, 2020

Introduction

It is my new year resolution. I like to spend time to read a book called restful web service, and I like to learn from book reading. But life is tough and I have to figure out how to read a book more efficiently.

Book reading

I have not read a book long term. A few years ago I learn JavaScript, and I found that I should read a JavaScript book. At that time, I started to watch pluralsight.com courses.

I like to work on my reading skills, and see how I can learn better compared to watch LinkedIn courses and other ways.

Right now, I found out that I have to go back to read the first few pages, and make sure that I understand better.

Sometime I cannot concentrate too long to read a book. I have to write down what I like to do after I read 10 to 20 minutes. Instead of doing it right away, I write down the idea, and then continue to read the book, but I change the strategy, print out one or two pages, or start all over again from first page of chapter.

After two days, I am still working on the first chapter.

This too shall pass. I remembered the statement, and I like to search bible version on this topic. Here is the article.

My sweet spot - being friendly as a Christian

January 8, 2020

Introduction

It is hard for me to learn how to parent myself, and understand my emotions. I did spend over three hours to chat with my younger sister, and then I found out that I wasted time on those memory we held together in December 2019. I am working on personal finance research, I like to value my time and do not waste them.

My sweet spot

I learn from tennis sports. After I had good time last holiday break, I had to catch up time to say thanks to my young sister. Her daughter stayed in the dormitory the whole month of winter break in Toronto area, she tried to give advice to her daughter what to do and how to spend time. I also learned a few things from my 15 years old niece.

Risk-Adjusted Return

Here is the article I like to spend 10 to 20 minutes to read and understand.

After 10 fat years for stock investors a lean decade is looming

Here is the article.

Let me review the paragraph and list a few facts in the statements:

It should come as no surprise that U.S. equity-market investors have been handsomely rewarded thus far this decade, a period of time that roughly corresponds with the recovery from the financial crisis (the bottom came in March 2009, roughly 10 months before the start of the 2010s). The S&P 500 SPX, +0.49%  is up nearly 140% since the start of the decade, and more than 180% on a total-return basis. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.56%  is up more than 130% over the same period.

Facts:
SPX - 140% starting from 2010 to 2018, total return 180%
DJIA - 130% starting from 2010 to 2018.

ProShares Ultra QQQ (QLD)

January 8, 2020

Introduction

It is the first time I learn the ETF with target for twice the daily performance of the Nasdaq 100 index. I like to learn more later.

Start from a simple statement

ProShares Ultra QQQ (QLD) came out on top with a 28.6% annualized return over the past 10 years. The $2.1 billion fund shoots for twice the daily performance of the Nasdaq 100 index. It carries a 0.95% expense ratio. QQQ charges 0.20%.

Actionable Items

Maybe I should invest QLD in 2020.

ProShares Ultra Dow 30 (DDM)

ProShares Ultra Dow 30 (DDM), with $437 million in assets, has produced a 10-year average return of 18.4%. This leveraged play targets twice the daily performance of the Dow Jones industrial average. It charges 0.95%. The non-leveraged SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average (DIA) costs 0.17%.

The best ETFs including leveraged funds

January 8, 2020

Introduction

I like to study the topic called best 10 year annualized return ETF, so I have to chance to learn a new concept called including leveraged funds, and also a new term called undergo wider swing.

Case study

Now, let's take a look at the best ETFs including leveraged funds, based on 10-year average annual returns. Leveraged funds tend to undergo wider swings, since they usually aim for double or triple the daily return (or inverse) of an index. So while they can produce big gains quickly, investors can also suffer big losses in a short time. They also tend to carry higher expense ratios than their non-leveraged counterparts.

Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) ETF study

Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ), a widely used barometer for big-cap tech stocks, also made a strong showing with a 16.7% average annual return. The $71.3 billion fund, which tracks the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100, is topped by Apple (AAPL), Amazon, Microsoft (MSFT), Alphabet and Facebook.

SOXX ETF study

SOXX - 16.9% 10-year annualized return, 1.6 billion fund, which tracks PHLX SOX Seminconductor index, owns 30 chip stocks including Broadcom (AVGO), Qualcomm (QCOM), Intel (INTC) and Nvidia (NVDA). The index has trended highers since late 2000, driven by widespread use of semiconductors in everything from smartphones to cars.

FDN - 20.8%, 9.5 billion in assets.
The FANG stocks - FB, AMZN, NFLX, GOOG made up nearly a third, or 33% of the 41-stock portfolio.

I read the above statement too quickly to understand the fact. I typed the statement into my blog and then I understood the statement.

Case study: Par 401 K 2010 - 2020 10 year history

January 6, 2020

Introduction

I took a few minutes to show how to use Charles Schwab to analyze last 10 year net position. I had hard time to understand myself. From 2010 June to May 2019, I was so busy but I did not learn how to prioritize my projects. I wasted 10 years of my life to build wealth for myself using par 401 K.

Case study

First, I did a case study if I stay put and leave the fund in my original portfolio, I can have more than 20,000 market change in last 10 years. Here is the blog.

But in reality, I showed behavior problem in January 2009, and then I did not review my finance at all 10 years until I decided to move my research from God, being a Christian, a web developer, data structure and algorithm away, started my personal finance research.

I remembered my friend Rick gave me the comment in 2010 after he knew me more than 10 years. You always like to have people in arm's away. In other words, I always put other people's concern first, and work hard, but I do not know what I should manage to do my own business.

Poverty research

I did quick study about poverty on January 5, 2020. That was the first time I read the article about the topic. I like to look into more on this issue. How can I get out of poverty after working so hard over 24 years in North America.

Low income research

I also started to work on research on low income. How should I work on and then stay confident on capitalism. The way to build wealth is not to rely on high paid job as a software programmer.

Why is it So Hard to Escape Poverty in America

Here is the article.

My favorite reading is the following:

Poverty and Psychosocial Outcomes

  • Some behavioral problems may include impulsiveness, difficulty getting along with peers, aggression, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and conduct disorder.
  • Some emotional problems may include feelings of anxiety, depression and low self-esteem.
  • Poverty and economic hardship are particularly difficult for parents who may experience chronic stress, depression, marital distress, and exhibit harsher parenting behaviors. These are all linked to poor social and emotional outcomes for children.
  • Unsafe neighborhoods may expose low-income children to violence which can impact mental well-being. Violence exposure can also predict future violent behavior in youth which places them at greater risk of injury and mortality and entry into the juvenile justice system.

As investment manager[edit]

In 1951, after teaching economics at Williams College and a five-year stint in commercial banking, Bernstein took over, at family insistence, the management of his late father's wealth management firm, Bernstein-Macaulay Inc., where he personally managed billions of dollars of individual and institutional portfolios. The assets under his management had grown more than tenfold by the time the firm was sold in 1967 and he resigned in 1973 to launch Peter L. Bernstein, Inc. and, a year later, to become the first editor of The Journal of Portfolio Management, a widely read scholarly financial publication for investment managers and academics. He continued as consulting editor of the Journal and served on the advisory panel of Robert D. Arnott's investment management firm, Research Affiliates.

Career as educator and lecturer[edit]

Bernstein served for many years on the Visiting Committee to the Economics Department at Harvard University, as a Trustee and member of the Finance Committee of the College Retirement Equities Fund (CREF), and as a Trustee of the Investment Management Workshop sponsored by the Association for Investment Management & Research (AIMR), and had been lecturing widely throughout the United States and abroad on risk management, asset allocation, portfolio strategy, and market history.

How much passive income to help me to become a quarter millionaire?

January 5, 2019

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. I spent over 13 months to research my own personal finance data. I do own a home with market value $135,000 US dollars in Florida state, and less than $30,000 US dollars 401 and IRA account, so I also worked 10 years full time in Canada, and saved almost $80,000 dollars. I think that it is a good idea to evaluate what percentage is generated by market value profit (market change).

Why good at math is not good enough?

I worked on math education very hard from 1984 to 1988. I can do so good on real analysis and probability, statistics from 1996 to 1997. But I do not have skills to learn new area in terms of risk management, understand market risk, and control my emotions to discipline myself.

I grew up with five siblings. I grew up with so many problems to understand how a good society should work.

I do not own anything in Canada. I did not purchase any real estate from 2010 to 2019, and I did not purchase a brand new car. I purchased a used 2001 Honda accord in 2014, and I am easily to get scammed by maintaining a car.

My passive income in Canada is less than $5000 dollars, since I did not learn and also invest anything from 2010 to 2019.

But from 2010 to 2019, my Florida home has market value gain, the value is $135,000 dollars. I did study and investigate how much I spent on my rental income, and then I figured out that I did not invest those money, and ended up spending Canada income to pay repair. Here is the analysis. From 2010 to 2015, I enjoyed shopping clothes, and I did not learn how to invest in stock market.

My net income from 1996 to 2010 is around $200,000 dollars, I added all my 1040 together. I also added all my income together in Canada.

January 5, 2020

Introduction

It is hard for me to work on my personal finance goal. I like to set up a goal to work on my half millionaire goal. It is not too tough for me to work on algorithm and data structure study, work on another 240 algorithms, and work on system design. I should learn to be more confident to be myself, and learn to contribute to USA or Canada economy. I want to be a half millionaire, how to make it happen?

10 reason I want to be

  2. Poverty level, Vancouver job market and people in 50s
  3. Shanghai Jiaotong university alumni - contribute the community
  4. Shanghai Jiaotong university math graduate alumni
  5. Life style fitting for over 50s
  6. Swimming, tennis, skiing, skating
  7. Church activities
  8. Risk management - investment
  9. Find time to read books about investment
  10. My reading skills - read a few books
  11. Frugal life style, minimalism
  12. Entertainment - life achievements
I like to spend time and learn more about Vancouver downtown area, take more free shuttle to Capilano suspension bridge park in 2020. So I can learn the value of $50 dollar ticket, what I can learn from the experience to hold annual ticket second time.

When I can make $100,000 dollars in stock market?

January 4, 2020

Introduction

It takes me twenty year for me to figure out how to play investing game. I started from May 2019 and built portfolios. I put $100,000 dollars into the market, and then I like to figure out when I can double the money.

My goal

I like to set my goal and work hard on it. I have to learn how to work with bear market, maybe in 2020. I like to learn how to work with behavior economics, and learn to stay in the market, sell bonds to purchase equity fund. I will train myself to learn how to be frugal, do not purchase anything in order for me to learn to live in a simple life.

I do think that I learned a few things to work with Dialpad by going through code screen, phone screen and onsite. I started to learn Restful web service, take courses on Linkedin learning and then I understood that it is such great learning experience compared to Amazon and Facebook onsite. Those engineers working in Dialpad are also super talent and smart.

Quora: Why are Google software engineers considered better than Microsoft?

Jan. 4, 2020

Introduction

It is interesting to read the answer, and I like to write down some notes and then I like to think about how to learn the difference.

Quora question and answer

Here is the question.

Hiring standard
Once you’re in Google, everyone knows you passed the same hiring bar. At Microsoft, hiring is chaotic, disorganized, and random. Every team has its own hiring practices; there are no company-wide guidelines of any significance.

Internal transfer
Internal transfers are extremely hard at Microsoft, so when my team got disbanded and I was asked to find another team to transfer to, I left the company. And to answer the original question, I assume that due to this lots of people like me decide to leave Microsoft when things change… it’s too hard to re-interview over and over with internal teams just to maintain employment. Those of us who are able to join higher-paying companies were likely to leave.

The yearly stock “refresher” amounts

Salary
L4 - Google between $200-$300K annual in total compensation
Level 61-62 engineer at Microsoft < $200K annually
Senior < $300K annually
