Say yes to short term pain

March 12, 2020

Introduction

It is so challenge to go through the bear market and see portfolio drop in one day, more than 7%. I know that people are risk aversion. It is also a good idea to review 7 traits for a good investor.

Say yes to short pain

Here is the article I like to read again.

I like to review the following trait #7, and work on some research on arguments from hedge fund manager Mark Sellers.

Trait #7
And finally the most important, and rarest, trait of all: The ability to live through volatility without changing your investment thought process.
This is almost impossible for most people to do; when the chips are down they have a terrible time not selling their stocks at a loss. They have a really hard time getting themselves to average down or to put any money into stocks at all when the market is going down.
People don't like short term pain even if it would result in better long-term results. Very few investors can handle the volatility required for high portfolio returns.
They equate short-term volatility with risk. This is irrational; risk means that if you are wrong about a bet you make, you lose money. A swing up or down over a relatively short time period is not a loss and therefore not risk, unless you are prone to panicking at the bottom and locking in the loss.
But most people just can't see it that way; their brains won't let them. Their panic instinct steps in and shuts down the normal brain function.
I would argue that none of these traits can be learned once a person reaches adulthood. By that time, your potential to be an outstanding investor later in life has already been determined.
It can be honed, but not developed from scratch because it mostly has to do with the way your brain is wired and experiences you have as a child. That doesn't mean financial education and reading and investing experience aren't important.
Those are critical just to get into the game and keep playing. But those things can be copied by anyone.

I do believe that this is biggest loss day I ever see. What should I do?

Should I continue to balance the portfolio, and sell some bond and purchase VFV.TO? What I can do is to wait another two months to work on rebalance?

Victoria portfolio - TFSA March 11, 2020

March 12, 2020

Introduction

It is the bear market first day. I like to write down something to memorize my day. I am a mature passive investor, and I will play by rules, not by emotions.

Actionable items

I should control and measure my own fear and greedy. If I am a considerate person, then I should not put $13,000 dollars into US equity in February. Anything like 30% return in less than three months, I should be super careful. No free lunch. It is just manipulation before the crash.

Also I should have sold all my equity to cash when VAB.TO was $28.00/ share with $1.00 dollar market change. I have to train myself to think, how to make short gain as well when market crashes.

Why All Successful Investment Strategies Require Discipline

Here is the article.

There is one common trait you will find with every single successful investor: discipline.

Build a plan, remove emotion

This could be a passive investment plan or an active investment plan. However, without a plan, emotion takes over.

They lose money by panic selling and miss out on gains by not being invested.

Time in the market beats timing the market.

C# Having fun to practice more ideas in 2020

I came cross the chance to practice the algorithm in various platform. It is an easy level algorithm, but I need to come out better design, and push myself to write error-prone code, be competitive instead of being so fragile under pressure.
My first practice in 2019. Here is the practice.
My second practice in 2020 March 10. Here is the link.
Improvement is to use mapping function with better design, instead of choosing minimum value columns, use rows + columns of given matrix input argument.

Introduction

I have to work on some research related to my age, and how should I work on retaining my skills to write bug-free code in C#.

Do not miss out

  1. I should join Leetcode weekly contest last three months;
  2. I should write easy level algorithm weekly, my number on Leetocode is 463 last two months;
  3. I should find time to work on my coding;
  4. I should not worry about stock market. Be a passive investor, stay on the course, be a long term investor;
  5. I should control my emotions. I got so much joy when SPX hit 3300, and my TFSA has unrealized gain over $3500 dollars.

I woke up before US stock market opened in EST 9:30AM, and then I woke up again second time I found out my bond in TFSA went up over $2,000 unrealized profit, since one dollar increase the first two hours trading on March 9, 2020.

Business opportunity

I was thinking about getting up early to spend two hours to work on online code assessment, but I went back to sleep. I had hay fever, and my eye was itching and nose was running. It felt like cold.

I should get up early, and then look for business opportunity as an investor.

I own over 1000 share of Canadian bond, I should sell all of them, and purchase them back when the price drops. I did not understand why bond price can go up one dollar.

HOW (AND WHY) ATHLETES GO BROKE

Here is the article.

Reading is most helpful for me to learn how to understand people, money, and control my own emotions.

I like the statement in the following paragraph:

Sometimes,though, a jock just can't shake the temptation to try to hit the jackpot. Butowsky believes that "there's something in an athlete's mentality"that drives him to swing for the fences financially--usually at his own peril."The solution to the problem is, without a doubt, education," the adviser says. "Change won't happen until grown men start wanting to learn."

What former NFL star Terrell Owens learned from blowing through $80 million

Here is the article.

Despite the fact that NFL players make an average of $1.9 million a year, 15 percent declare bankruptcy, while Sports Illustrated estimates that 78 percent end up coming close and/or experience significant financial stress.

Former stars explain why NFL players go broke, and what you can learn

Here is the link.

Facts:

78% of NFL players end up broke or under financial stress after they retire.

Here are some of the ways people sabotage their finances.

They enable instead of help

Uncles ask for money, aunts, grandmothers, friends, all of the sudden they think it's a free-for-all.

Players should learn to say no, both out of self-preservation and because unearned money breeds dependency.

Be wary of giving money to people who chronically overspend or who aren't taking steps to support themselves. You may want to help, but you could be making things worse.

They trust the wrong people

Too often, people turn over the keys of their financial lives to others and stop paying attention.

The player should have learned about finances even though he was busy setting NFL records...

Trust advisors to manage my financial portfolio without keeping a close eye on it.

They spend too much

The money disappeared faster than expected.

Careers may be shortened by injuries or getting cut from a team.

The takeaway: None of us is guaranteed a long career or ever-climbing paychecks. Living below our means during good times is the best way to survive when times are bad. Putting aside money for retirement and emergencies should be top priorities.

Asset classes perform differently.

$100,000 invested in 1997 would have had a volatile journey to nearly $400,000 in 2017 if invested in U.S. stocks. If invested in cash investments or bonds, the ending amount would be lower, but the path would have been smoother. Investing in a moderate allocation portfolio would have captured some of the growth of stocks with lower volatility over the long term.

My thoughts

I just could not believe that those 20 years return will be almost 4 times. I went to USA in 1996 August, and before 2001 I worked full time and my net income near 3 three year is over $110,000 US dollars.

Based on the simulation on the above page, here are returns with stocks 50%, bonds 40%, cash 10%

1996   13.5%
1997   21.1%
1998   18.2%
1999    10.7%
2000    0.7%
2001    -2.2%
2002    -6.8%
2003    16.1%
2004      7.3%
2005      3.7%
2006     10.1%
2007       6.0%
2008     -16.2%
2009      15.6%
2010      10.2%
2011        4.2%
2012        9.7%
2013       15.4%
2014         9.2%

Rebalancing to Help Reduce Risk - Portfolio management

It is my favorite article and there are a few wisdom for me to pick up. I like to learn more about rebalancing and understand how it helps to reduce risk.

Chop, Chop, Chop: Stocks’ Choppy Behavior Around Trade News

Here is the link.

I like to read the following paragraph more carefully later on.

Don’t try to trade around trade news!

One of the lessons that should come from observing what’s above is that trying to trade around these trade headlines is a potentially-treacherous exercise. With so much daily noise, we continue to recommend a disciplined strategy around diversification and rebalancing. Tied to that has been our sector strategy; which has been fairly “neutral” over the past year—having only one outperform rating (health care) and only one underperform rating (communications services). The remaining nine sectors have market perform ratings. That said, we have been generally emphasizing a somewhat-defensive positioning, with a bias toward sectors like health care; and utilities, REITs and consumer staples within the market perform-rated sectors.

Panic Is Not a Strategy—Nor Is Greed

Here is the article I like to read in 10 minutes.

Best well-written paragraph is the following. I like to read them again and again, and get familiar with the concepts.

The closest thing to a “free lunch”

As I’ve often said, there are very few free lunches in investing. Asset allocation, diversification and periodic rebalancing are as close as you get. One of the most important areas where Schwab offers advice is the development of a long-term strategic asset allocation plan, which can help you create an appropriately diversified portfolio.
Rebalancing—that is, maintaining your target asset allocation by adding to underperforming asset classes and trimming outperforming ones—goes against the emotions of fear and greed that often drive investment decision making. It may be challenging to sell investments that have done well and add to holdings that haven’t performed as well, but developing and maintaining the right long-term asset mix is by far the most important set of decisions an investor will ever make. Rebalancing forces us to do what we know we’re supposed to do, which is “buy low, sell high.”
Here is the list of closest thing in the above paragraph:
Asset allocation, diversification and periodic rebalancing.

Don't try to time the market. Re-balance more often. The beauty of re-balance is to force investors to do what we supposed to do. Buy low and sell high. Add low trim high. Your portfolio will tell you what to do next things.

Don't trade on tweet. Go back to basics, discipline, defensive and diversified.

Warmup: Book reading JavaScript data structure and algorithm

March 6, 2020

Introduction

It is so tough for me to get back to JavaScript coding. I like to have some warmup, and the idea is to read the book called JavaScript data structure and algorithm.

Book reading

It is important for me to warm up JavaScript since I have to work on a small project, I need to go back to learn and read quickly program written in JavaScript.

Here are ideas to work on.

  1. Read 10 hours the book;
  2. Work on something really simple and basic first;
  3. Try to build a good habit to develop skills on programming language;
  4. Push myself to learn more about functional programming language;
  5. Write and share some learning JavaScript experience;
  6. I need to study and work, and I should not invest time only on C#.

Do not time the market - how to master the investment game?

March 6, 2020

Introduction

It is tough for me to discipline myself as an investor. I have to work on my TFSA account and stay on the course. I did rebalance my portfolio, and sold some bond and purchased some equity ETF.

Do not time the market

I learn to discipline myself. I am thinking that bear market is coming, and SPX will drop at least 50%. But I like to learn how to discipline myself. Do not time the market, since SPX was going down around 2900, and it was time for me to learn how to rebalance.

Behavior economics

It is hard to learn behavior finance, and specially when the market swung like 4% a day on SPX index. I like to recognize my emotions, and then make decision based on rules to keep balance of my portfolio. Keep it simple. Do not think about coming bear market, Corona virus, just treat it as a normal day go out shopping.

Here are highlights:
  1. June 10, 2019 Purchase VFV.TO at price 67.34, 140 share;
  2. January 21, 2020 Sell VFV.TO at price of $77.23, 18 share
  3. Feb. 6, 2020 Purchase VFV.TO at price of $78.99, 83 share
  4. March 6, 2020 Purchase VFV.TO at price of $70.00, 20 share
My market position of VFV.TO on March 6, 2020, cost/ share 71.8761, market price 70.89, Market value is $15,950.25, P & L (221.88), %rtn is (1.37)

I did sell VFV.To since my portfolio went up unrealized gain more than $3000 dollars, so I sold $2000 dollars to rebalance in January 21, 2020.

I purchased equity ETF on Feb. 6, 2020 with $6,500 VFV.TO. I like to keep 50% in equity, I like to see another year 30% growth on S & P 500 index.

I purchase equity ETF on March 6, 2020 with $1400 VGV.TO.

Lesson I learned from 2009 to 2019

I do not know how to start my story as an investor. I just could not believe that I got so stubborn and did not learn anything like reading an investment book from 2009 to 2019.

First time  I learned is back in May 2019. I learned that I timed the market since I sold everything in my 401 K, and IRA and moved to money market fund. It is called time the market in 2009. I thought that I was so depressed since I failed my Canada immigration application in Jan. 2009. But actually it was my emotion, I reacted the market change and timed the market. Only thing I remembered was that I walked near FAU stadium, I heard radio saying the market was 15 years lowest point. Did I spend 5 - 10 hours to work on study and research? No!

I like to repeat my story, 43 year old and my finance ignorance.

I timed the market, and sold my par 401 K in 15 years low, and then I never spent any time from 2009 to 2019 December to look into my portfolio, and I did not do any research how to invest on stock market.

I learn the inflation for 10 years with 4% a year, it is 40% of loss counting inflation risk alone. Why did I so pissed off when the portfolio lost over 25% back in 2009? I was naive and did not choose to be a self-learner, I was 43 years old in 2009.

Actionable Items

There are so many emotions and it is hard for me to make decision in terms of investment on stock market. It is better to stay on the course, and keep the original plan.

I should not speculate, even though I spend time to watch videos about Corona virus, but I do not think that I can time the market.

Best result is to take my unrealized gain over $3000 dollars in January 2020; and then I got back in when the market was in 2900 SPX, and then sold them when it was in 3100 SPX. But it is impossible, no one can time the market.

March 2 2020 Par 401 K market change

March 2, 2020

It is time for me to record market change on this day.

Actionable items

I had this 401 K account since I worked for par tech in 2007. My original deposit is $8000 dollars. I made mistake to time the market, and sold all assets in 2009 and put them in money market.

I never spent any time to review and learn something from 2009 to 2019. I noticed one time the market change was up 40% in 2010 when I started to work on my current job.

I didn't know why I made such bad choice, and I had such bad decision making, bad economy behaviors. Even though those are common mistakes, I learn that it is my job as an adult, learn every day about business. I should learn finance literacy by myself.

- To become a great investor, you must learn to suppress your ego, avoid conservatism in your stock pickings, paying more attention to numbers than stories and that no good investments are made under powerful emotional influence - Cope with ego by spreading your money across at least a few different stocks, conservatism by flipping the script and asking, “why not?”, instead of “why?”, attention by playing the odds and emotions by automating and learning to recognize your emotions. - A winning rule-based stock picking system should have empirical support, theoretical support and (some) psychological pain attached to it - Value investing a la Warren Buffett and Benjamin Graham fulfills these criteria - Momentum investing also fulfills all of the criteria for a winning rule-based stock picking system

Mock interview bring-home assignment

March 1, 2020

Here is the algorithm I like to work on. I got this algorithm from the interviewer on March 1, 2020 10:00 PM mock interviewer, who is a Uber engineer.

Given a value N, if we want to make change for N cents, and we have infinite supply of each of S = { S1, S2, .. , Sm} valued coins, how many ways can we make the change? The order of coins doesn’t matter.

For example, for N = 4 and S = {1,2,3}, there are four solutions: {1,1,1,1},{1,1,2},{2,2},{1,3}. So output should be 4. For N = 10 and S = {2, 5, 3, 6}, there are five solutions: {2,2,2,2,2}, {2,2,3,3}, {2,2,6}, {2,3,5} and {5,5}. So the output should be 5.

Actionable Items

The above algorithm is Leetcode 518 coin change 2, and I like to review both algorithms, 518 coin change, and 322 coin change.

Case study: Find contiguous subarray with maximum sum

March 1, 2020

Introduction

It was my 10:00 PM mock interview. The interviewer is the engineer from Uber working on backend, who used to work on Yahoo backend as well.

Case study

Here is the code I wrote. I ran the code using web compiler and it works fine.

Interviewer feedback

Interviewee feedback

Actionable Items

I went through the code with a simple test case, and then explained to myself and interviewer how it works. I did say that one variable name should be changed to maxEndAtI.

I should learn how the interviewer gave me suggestions. Walk through the test case to explain the idea, [1, 4, -100, 1].

March 3, 2020
I ran the code against Leetcode online judge - 53 maximum subarray.
The failed test case:
Input: [-1]
Output: 0
Expected: -1

Don’t diversify too much – the more companies you own, the less you know about each of them. - One of the most important investing strategies that you can learn about is filters. Wayfair layoffs

Here is the article.

这次的裁员跟performance完全无关(起码在我的team里是这样),甚至连Level 4 的manager都是当天才被通知的,无权参与提供意见,我的manager在wayfair工作了8年,只给了一句comment: I have never seen this befor.

Actionable Items

I do not practice Leetcode last two months. I was so busy to learn so many things, like restful API, data storage, system design interview.

In reality, it is important for me to continue to work on easy level algorithms every week. So I can keep pushing myself to work hard.
