Better Buy: Boeing vs. Airbus | My 20 minutes study

July 19, 2021

Here is the article.

  1. It is hard for to figure out which stock symbol is for airbus. OCT: EADSY, why is over the counter?
  2.  Airbus reported 39 airplane orders in the first quarter, but 100 cancellations led to a net order decline of 61.
  3. Boeing did much better with 282 gross orders, but a slew of cancellations led to net order growth of just 76 airplanes.
  4. First, Boeing leaned into one of its most important customers in the quarter, Southwest Airlines, which agreed to buy 100 airplanes with options for an additional 155 in the future.
  5. Also, Southwest Airlines ordered 737 MAX airplanes, and given that the ban on the 737 MAX was lifted late in 2020, it's likely that the orders represented a temporary boost.
  6. Airbus' financial position is a lot stronger than Boeing's right now. In other words, Airbus has more resiliency should anything go wrong.
  7. Due to a combination of the 737 MAX grounding and the COVID-19 pandemic, Boeing's debt has ballooned, and it was slightly more than its revenue in 2020.
  8. Airbus is better positioned than Boeing in both an operational and financial sense.

Comparing the two aviation giants in a post-pandemic world.

Traditionally, Boeing (NYSE:BA) has done a better job of converting revenue into earnings and then earnings into free cash flow (FCF), and on that basis, it has been a better buy than Airbus (OTC:EADSY). However, the reality is the next few years will bring about a unique set of conditions in the commercial aviation market. It's far too simplistic to assume Boeing will outperform its rival, and not least with its stock price. Let's take a look at which stock is a better value.

Order trends

Boeing shareholders were pleased to hear that, for the first time in two years, its net airplane orders were ahead of its rival in the first quarter. However, on closer inspection, the numbers don't look great for either company. Airbus reported 39 airplane orders in the first quarter, but 100 cancellations led to a net order decline of 61. Boeing did much better with 282 gross orders, but a slew of cancellations led to net order growth of just 76 airplanes.

That said, Boeing's outperformance on orders in the quarter is probably not a turning point in the battle with Airbus. First, Boeing leaned into one of its most important customers in the quarter, Southwest Airlines, which agreed to buy 100 airplanes with options for an additional 155 in the future. It's a significant order, but it will be difficult to repeat it, not least because Southwest is the largest operator of an all-Boeing fleet.

Also, Southwest Airlines ordered 737 MAX airplanes, and given that the ban on the 737 MAX was lifted late in 2020, it's likely that the orders represented a temporary boost.

Second, as you can see in a comparison of recent yearly orders on the Airbus A320 family compared to the Boeing 737 MAX, Boeing has a lot of catching up to do following the grounding of the 737 MAX.

Second, as you can see in a comparison of recent yearly orders on the Airbus A320 family compared to the Boeing 737 MAX, Boeing has a lot of catching up to do following the grounding of the 737 MAX.

Second, Airbus also faces issues with orders and the pricing of orders, and there's a downside risk for both companies if the commercial aviation market doesn't recover as planned. However, Airbus' financial position is a lot stronger than Boeing's right now. In other words, Airbus has more resiliency should anything go wrong.

Due to a combination of the 737 MAX grounding and the COVID-19 pandemic, Boeing's debt has ballooned, and it was slightly more than its revenue in 2020. While there are no questions around Boeing's solvency, the extra debt it took on will burden the company with higher interest-rate payments for many years to come.

EADSF Financial Debt (Annual) Chart

DATA BY YCHARTS

The bottom line

Airbus is better positioned than Boeing in both an operational and financial sense. There is a case for buying Boeing based on its traditional outperformance, but the next few years will be anything but traditional for both companies. As such, Airbus is a better buy.

Dow suffers biggest drop of the year as Delta variant fears hit Wall Street hard | Facts to review

July 19, 2021

Updated 4:21 PM ET, Mon July 19, 2021

  1. Dow fell 2.1%, S&P500 down 1.6%, Nasdaq down 1.1%
  2. Dow - March 16, 2020, drop 3,000 points, a 13% freefall
  3. Last five days,  GTE -18%, XOM -8%, CVM -9%, MRO -16%, CVE -12.84%, XLE -10.57%

New York (CNN Business)Investors are getting spooked by the rising numbers of Covid-19 cases as the Delta variant spreads across the globe.

The Dow fell about 725 points Monday, a drop of 2.1%. The S&P 500 ended the day down 1.6% and the Nasdaq was 1.1% lower.
This was the worst day for the Dow since a 943-point drop in late October, and it was the biggest decline this year. But the blue chip market barometer has had several even bigger point plunges since the start of 2020 due to concerns about the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Dow plummeted more than 1,000 points six times last year, with five of those market meltdowns taking place in March at the start of the pandemic in America. The Dow suffered its biggest point slide ever on March 16, 2020, dropping nearly 3,000 points — a 13% freefall.
Investors feared that the Delta coronavirus variant could threaten the US economic recovery. Shares of companies in sectors that were widely thought to benefit most from the reopening of the economy are getting hit the hardest.
Airlines American (AAL), United (UAL) and Delta (DAL) were all down around 4% to 5%. Cruise operators Carnival (CCL), Royal Caribbean (RCL) and Norwegian (NCLH) each fell between 4% and 6%.
Energy stocks plummeted as well following a more than 3% drop in oil prices. Chevron (CVX) and Exxon Mobil (XOM) were down 8%.The OPEC+ group of nations also agreed over the weekend on a deal to produce more oil, a move that could boost supply and reduce crude prices.
Long-term bond rates continued to slide as well, a sign that fixed income investors are now far more worried about a Delta variant-induced economic slowdown than they are about rising inflation fears.
The yield on the 10-year US Treasury sank below 1.2% for the first time since February.
But as consumer prices continue to rise, some worry about a more insidious threat: the possibility that another Covid-19 outbreak could slow the economy even as inflation pressures mount. That's a phenomenon known as stagflation.
"Fear of stagflation will be a major concern for investors if a resurgence in Covid infections causes economies to slow while consumer prices continue an upward trajectory," said Peter Essele, head of investment management for Commonwealth Financial Network, in an email.
Small American companies were also getting hit particularly hard. The Russell 2000 (RUT) was down 2.1%. That index primarily holds shares of small cap firms that generate more of their revenue from the United States than international markets.
The still-high number of unvaccinated Americans means vaccination rates have not met the threshold needed to stop the spread of Covid-19.
Most Americans who have not previously been infected or received vaccinations will likely contract the rapidly spreading Delta variant, Dr. Scott Gottlieb, commissioner of the US Food and Drug Administration during the Trump administration, told CBS' "Face the Nation" Sunday.
Forty-eight states are now seeing new case numbers surge at least 10% higher than the previous week, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
Stocks fell Friday as well due to conflicting reports about the health of the US consumer. Retail sales grew surprisingly in June, but a measure of consumer sentiment for July showed that Americans are growing less confident about the economy.
The CNN Business Fear & Greed Index, which looks at seven measures of market sentiment, is now showing signs of Extreme Fear.

Stocks still up sharply this year and from 2020's lows

But cloud-based call center software company Five9 (FIVN) was spared from the market sell-off Monday. Shares rose 6% on the news that video conferencing giant Zoom (ZM) was buying it for nearly $15 billion. Zoom's stock fell.
Covid-19 vaccine maker Moderna (MRNA), which is set to be added to the S&P 500 later this week, rallied too, surging more than 9%. BioNTech (BNTX), which makes a vaccine with Pfizer (PFE), rose 5%. Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), maker of a third Covid-19 vaccine, were both slightly lower however.
Despite the recent volatility, stocks are not far from record highs and are having a solid year.
The Dow is still up more than 10% in 2021 and is just 3% below its all-time peak. The S&P 500 has surged 13% this year and is also only 3% off its record high.
What's more, the S&P 500 is up about 90% from its Covid-induced bear market lows of March 2020. Some strategists think the recent sell-off presents an opportunity.
"We do not expect a return to complete shut downs in the US so while the damage from the Delta variant can be significant, we are still in the 'buy the dip' camp," Bryce Doty, senior portfolio manager with Sit Fixed Income Associates, said in a report Monday.

Oil leads market plunge as virus rattles faith in recovery | My 20 minutes study

Oil Leads Market Plunge as Virus Rattles Faith in Recovery

            Jill R. Shah

(Bloomberg) -- Oil was the biggest loser in a broad market selloff after OPEC+ agreed to boost crude supply as a resurgent virus shook investor confidence in the global economic recovery.

Futures in New York lost as much as 8.3% on Monday, the biggest decline intraday since March. OPEC and its allies agreed to monthly supply hikes of 400,000 barrels a day. (I do not understand?) At the same time, the spread of the delta variant is stoking a risk-off mood in broader markets and threatening oil demand with fresh mobility restrictions around the world. The dollar also rose, reducing the appeal of commodities priced in the currency.

“The demand story has really taken a big hit here, and on the supply side, we’re getting more barrels of crude,” said Ed Moya, senior markets analyst at Oanda Corp. “The momentum behind this move could get ugly.”

Oil prices have been volatile over the last two weeks while OPEC+ remained in a dispute over adding supplies to the market. The deal was struck this weekend after Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates reached a compromise on UAE’s demand for a more generous output limit. OPEC+ will now face a “new set of challenges” next year as rival supplies grow, said Toril Bosoni, head of IEA’s oil industry and markets division, in an email.

“As supplies from other producers not part of the deal rebound, and demand falls seasonally, stocks could see renewed builds early in the year,” she said.

While oil supply is set to rise, countries around the world are dealing with surges in new cases of Covid-19 as the highly contagious delta variant drives up infections. Indonesia surpassed India and Brazil in daily case numbers. U.S. infections are outpacing the global rate of increase, and the U.K. on Saturday reported the most cases since January.

“We’ve got risk aversion firmly in place and it’s all triggered by the spread of the delta Covid-19 variant,” said Moya of Oanda Corp. “There’s this fear that you’re not going to have that strong economic recovery we were all hoping for in the second half of the year.”

The delta strain may make oil volatile in the near term, but the deal between the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies would support a “constructive” view on prices, Goldman Sachs Group Inc. said. The market is still “very tight,” despite the addition of supply, said Ed Morse, head of commodities research at Citigroup Inc. in a Bloomberg Television interview.

The agreement spans more than a year and covers millions of barrels of production, but it also remains flexible. The alliance will continue to hold talks every month from September, including a review of the market in December.

That’s a “fair bit of time” before global oil supplies are back to pre-pandemic levels, said Stewart Glickman, energy equity analyst at CFRA Research. “It doesn’t feel like a glut to me.”
