Stock market swing: Aug. 16 to Aug. 25, 2021 |

Here are the top 10 performers since the 14,000-point milestone:

  1. Support.com inc
  2. Prothena Corp pic
  3. Eurodry ltd;
  4. Performant financial corporation
  5. Vertex energy inc
  6. Tecnoglass Inc.
  7. Urban one in Class D
  8. BioNTech SE Sponsorted ADR
  9. CPI Card Group, Inc.
  10. State Auto Financial Corporation

National Securities Corp.

How to teach some one to invest professionally?

Aug. 24, 2021

It is way to build wealth life time. How to invest professionally? Meme stocks are based on ideas to get rich quickly.

I like to look into more carefully on this topic.

David Bailin: Retail investors will be left holding the bag when the fast money leaves: Citi private bank's Bailin

Meme stocks: There are still 16 meme stocks with at least 100% gains in 2021

While it may seem that the “meme stock” mania is dissipating following GameStop Corp.’s US$27 billion wipe-out, there are still 16 companies whose shares are up triple digits this year.

Of the 50 stocks that Robinhood originally put on its restricted list, roughly a third have doubled or more in price in 2021, while only six are lower year-to-date. Leading the pack is Naked Brand Group Ltd., whose shares are 546 per cent higher this year. Koss Corp. is up 528 per cent while GameStop shares are still hanging onto a gain of 317 per cent.

It’s a reminder that the wild ride may be far from over for these stocks. While US$164 billion in value has been wiped from those 50 companies in a matter of days, data compiled by Bloomberg show, that came after US$276 billion in market cap was added from the start of the year through the height of the frenzy.

“There’s still a huge appetite for this type of trading,” said Chris O’Keefe, managing director at Logan Capital Management. “There’s still a lot of energy to continue to speculate on the stock market.”

Over the past 24 hours, AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc., Churchill Capital Corp., GameStop and Sundial Growers Inc. were the four most-frequently mentioned stocks on Stocktwits -- which bills itself as the largest community for investors and traders -- according to data compiled by Bloomberg. All four were among the 50 stocks curbed by Robinhood last week, and all four are up at least 150 per cent in 2021.

It’s likely that any unwind is going to take weeks, rather than days, due to the fact that professional investors have gotten involved too, according to Arthur Hogan, chief market strategist at National Securities Corp. For example, hedge fund Mudrick Capital Management gained almost US$200 million from its stakes in stocks including AMC and GameStop.

“This trend, or the unwind of the crazy short squeeze, likely is going to take a little bit longer than a couple of days,” Hogan said. “The fundamental driver behind that taking longer has to do with the players -- it’s not all a bunch of guys sitting in their mom’s basement.”

Jim Chanos says the market is entering risky phase and retail investors may be left holding the bag

Aug. 24, 2021

Here is the article.

Jim Chanos says the market is entering risky phase and retail investors may be left holding the bag

“The problem with getting more people, retail, involved is that it always seems to happen toward the end of every cycle,” he said.

Short-seller Jim Chanos warned that retail investors late in the game could be left holding the bag as more red flags emerged in a speculative stock market.

“The problem with getting more people, retail, involved is that it always seems to happen toward the end of every cycle. Retail wasn’t there at ’09 at the bottom. They weren’t there in ’02 after the dot-com bubble collapsed. They were certainly there at ’99,” Chanos said Tuesday on CNBC’s “Squawk Box.” “So the problem in the last few cycles as I see it is that we get promotors and insiders and people who have done very well cashing out as retail is buying.”

The historic recovery rally from the coronavirus pandemic has attracted a record number of new retail investors to participate in the stock market. Many of them gravitated toward the most volatile and riskiest areas of the market for outsized short-term returns, including shares of companies with struggling businesses like AMC and GameStop.

Meanwhile, a flood of companies rushed to public markets to raise capital this year to take advantage of sky-high prices and wild animal spirits. In addition to a booming traditional IPO market, SPACs — special purpose acquisition companies which are corporate shells formed to take an unidentified company public — enjoyed unprecedented growth as investors piled in, hoping to hit a home run.

“Wall Street also has a printing press in addition to the Fed. If you get prices high enough, you are going to see lots and lots of equity issuance not only from companies that can put it to good use, but from all kinds of questionable business plans and outright scam,” Chanos said. “That’s sort of where we are now. We are getting into money being raised for all kinds of things that probably aren’t at the end of the day going to be productive but might line up pockets of the promotors doing it.”

The wild ride in cryptocurrencies and other digital coins this year also speaks to the trading frenzy in this bull market and the excess risk investors are taking, Chanos said.

“When we start speculating in various different cryptos, questionable coins, the sixth SPAC that some guy puts out, the 48th different electric vehicle charging company going public, that’s when things start to get dicey in my opinion,” Chanos said. “We are well into that part of the cycle. I just think the last group of retail coming in are going to probably learn their hard lesson.”

Chanos is a famed short seller on Wall Street with a long history of identifying fraud. He made his name betting against energy trading company Enron in 2000 after discovering deceptive accounting practices.

His recent short bet against Chinese coffee chain Luckin turned out to be spot on as it was revealed that the company’s chief operating officer fabricated sales.

However, as a longtime Tesla bear, Chanos had a painful 2020 as the electric car company rallied more than 700% in a pandemic-stricken year. The investor previously said he closed his Tesla short position earlier this year.
