Cut loss | Cut loss 7% | Big lesson to learn in 2023

Still The No. 1 Rule For Stock Market Investors: Always Cut Your Losses Short

In the battle for investment survival, you can learn a lot from judo. The first and most important lesson in that martial art is the same for the stock market today: damage control.

柔道从学习摔倒开始训练, 反复训练摔倒
股票也从止损开始训练, 止损7%

Judo masters begin not by learning how to throw, but how to fall. They practice this skill until it's as natural as breathing. No matter how many times they're flipped, they can rise to fight again.

Highly successful stock pickers go through similar training: They must learn how to cut their losses short. This means selling a stock when it's down 7% or 8% from your purchase price.

Sounds simple, but many investors have learned the hard way how difficult it is to master the most important rule in investing.

止损让你有机会重来

No one wants to sell for a loss. It's an admission that you made a mistake. But if you can set your ego aside, you can take a small loss and still be fit enough, both financially and mentally, to invest the next day. Cutting losses quickly prevents you from suffering a devastating fall that's too steep to recover from.

The Mathematics Of Investment Losses

Consider the math. Say you buy a stock at 50. For whatever reason, it drops 8% to 46 during the next few days. You promptly unload it and move on. To reclaim that loss, you need to make an 8.7% gain on your next purchase with your remaining capital, which shouldn't be hard to do.

What if you hold on?

You're sure the stock will snap back. Your research convinces you it's worth $100, so why get scared by a minor setback?

There's one problem. The market doesn't care who you are, what you think, or how much you believe in a stock. It says you miscalculated, at least in the short term — a message that gets louder as the stock drops 25% to 37-1/2. To get back even, now you need a 33% gain, which is much tougher to come by than that easy 8.7%.

What if the market really doesn't like your stock and slices it in half to 25? You don't need a calculator for this one: To recover a 50% loss requires a 100% gain. How many stocks did you pick last year that doubled in price?

You Can Still Win Big With Many Small Losses

A .250 batting average is nothing to crow about. But even the best hitters in baseball fail more than they succeed. Consider Tony Gwynn, who in 1999 became the 21st member of pro baseball's 3,000-hit club. That year, the former San Diego Padres outfielder finished the season with a batting average of .338. That means he was coming up empty nearly two out of three times at the plate.

You likely never saw Gwynn fret after grounding out. The same is true for successful investors. They calmly take a small loss and look for the next potential winner.

So leave your emotions behind. Cutting losses with discipline will help keep your head clear when it's time to return to the market. A great paradox of investing is that the ripest buying opportunities occur just after bear markets — when the major stock averages have declined 20% or more.

That's exactly when most investors who haven't cut their losses are reeling and don't want to be hit again. It's hard to think straight after losing thousands of dollars. But the market always recovers. What kind of shape will you be in?

Fair Value and Profit Drivers

Our fair value estimate is $13 per share.

Our estimate assumes $2.5 billion pretax unrecovered losses related to the Maui wildfires. Changing our pretax liability assumption by $1 billion would change our fair value estimate by $2.50 per share, assuming regulators approve no rate recovery for losses. Lost-value estimates have been as high as $5.5 billion, in which case we expect there would be little or no value to the electric utility if Hawaiian is found responsible for a substantial amount of those losses. We assume the bank is unaffected by the wildfires with no changes to the bank's underlying business.

HE stock | morningstar.com | Nov. 9, 2023

Business Strategy and Outlook

Hawaiian Electric Industries derives approximately three fourths of consolidated earnings from an electric utility and the remaining from Hawaii-based American Savings Bank, a business mix unique among its utility peers.

Shareholders will need to be comfortable with a wide range of outcomes due to potential significant liabilities from recent wildfires in Maui. The largest fire in Lahaina killed more than 100 people and destroyed 2,200 structures with an estimated cost of $5.5 billion, according to a damage report released in mid-August by the Pacific Disaster Center and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Plaintiffs will need to show that the utility was negligent or could have reasonably prevented a loss.

HEI's base allowed return on equity is 9.5%, though returns are likely to be much lower during the transition to the new ratemaking. For 2022, returns were just 8.2%. Even if Hawaiian Electric is found not liable for the Maui fires, we think returns will be below allowed returns during our forecast.

American Savings Bank provides low-cost capital for the utility. The bank has a history of maintaining a low risk profile and strong balance sheet.

C# | SortedList

A SortedList object internally maintains two arrays to store the elements of the list; that is, one array for the keys and another array for the associated values. Each element is a key/value pair that can be accessed as a DictionaryEntry object. A key cannot be null, but a value can be.

The capacity of a SortedList object is the number of elements the SortedList can hold. As elements are added to a SortedList, the capacity is automatically increased as required through reallocation. The capacity can be decreased by calling TrimToSize or by setting the Capacity property explicitly.

.NET Framework only: For very large SortedList objects, you can increase the maximum capacity to 2 billion elements on a 64-bit system by setting the enabled attribute of the <gcAllowVeryLargeObjects> configuration element to true in the run-time environment.

The elements of a SortedList object are sorted by the keys either according to a specific IComparer implementation specified when the SortedList is created or according to the IComparable implementation provided by the keys themselves. In either case, a SortedList does not allow duplicate keys.

The index sequence is based on the sort sequence. When an element is added, it is inserted into SortedList in the correct sort order, and the indexing adjusts accordingly. When an element is removed, the indexing also adjusts accordingly. Therefore, the index of a specific key/value pair might change as elements are added or removed from the SortedList object.

Operations on a SortedList object tend to be slower than operations on a Hashtable object because of the sorting. However, the SortedList offers more flexibility by allowing access to the values either through the associated keys or through the indexes.

Elements in this collection can be accessed using an integer index. Indexes in this collection are zero-based.

Leetcode submission | 2015 - 2023 | Jianmin Chen

Nov. 9, 2023

I lost passion to work on Leetcode during pandemic. After May 2022, I stopped working on Leetcode until July 2023.

I took three weeks vacation in August 2023, and then I decided to go back to work on Leetcode again.

Based on the fact that I solve over 720 algorithms, I have to review those solved algorithms constantly, find Editorial section and learn some new ways to solve them. Also I need to continue to solve tree algorithms, and also review what I have completed.

Learning should be very fun. I can do so many things, one way is to review what I have solved quickly. I was lucky to have time to solve so many algorithms, but most of important is to build habit to challenge myself, and then push myself to be better, be strong, and be curious.

2015 - 2016 | First two years

I can tell that I did not do a good job in 2016, since I only have 51 submission based on Leetcode report. One thing I can do better is to set up a goal for every year. I should have at least 200 submissions every year, if I can not make it, then cut other projects in my life.

If I do not have enough submissions, then I do not prepare very well, and I also do not learn something new through the practice.

Ideas to work on Leetcode algorithms

  1. Solve all easy level algorithms - it is easy to solve 200 algorithms in less than 3 months.
  2. Work on Leetcode weekly contest - 4 algorithms a contest, once a week.
  3. Work on all tree algorithms - over 200 algorithms to solve
  4. Find other programs to join
  5. Record videos and post on youtube.com for algorithm problem solving
  6. Write coding blog for algorithm problem solving
  7. Practice mock interview on interviewing.io and then have more practice
  8. Build more interest in coding - algorithm books to review, 75
  9. I hired a graduate student from Tsinghua university, and he coached me 10 hours. One of his ideas is to work on easy level algorithms first. Finish all easy level algorithms, and then move on the medium level. That is the way I can learn better and more efficiently.
  10. Here is the blog to show my learning from the coach.

AC Drain Line Clogged? Find Out Why and How to Fix Your AC

 Here is the article.

When it’s hot and humid outside, you rely on a properly functioning cooling system to keep you cool and comfortable inside. While your air conditioner is tasked with cooling your home, it’s also responsible for balancing humidity levels by pulling excess moisture from the air during the summer months. To perform this important task, your system requires a properly functioning air conditioner drain line – one of the most overlooked, yet important, components of an HVAC system.

In this article, we’ll explain some of the most common causes of a clogged AC drain line and how to fix this issue.

What Is an AC Drain Line?

The AC condensate drain line plays an essential role in an air conditioning system by removing excess moisture produced during the cooling process. As the system cools the air, water vapor is pulled from the air and condenses into liquid form on the evaporator coil. Water droplets then drip into the condensate drain pan below.

The AC drain line is a small pipe that transports water and debris from the drain pan to a drain or outdoors. For the air conditioning unit to function properly, that moisture must be drained.

During this process, it’s possible that dirt and other debris come along for the ride. If too much debris accumulates in the drain line, a clog can form. Given that the line is responsible for releasing excess moisture, it’s a convenient growing space for mold and mildew, which can also contribute to a blocked condensate drain line.

If left uncleaned, the dirt, debris, mold, and mildew can create a clogged drain line. A clogged AC drain line can result in a complete system failure, so we’re here to help you understand how to keep the line clean and what to do if you suspect a clog. To find the condensate line, look for a pipe (often PVC) that drains outside by your air conditioning system.

What Happens if the AC Drain Line Keeps Clogging?

A clogged condensate drain line can cause a backup of water. If the line can’t carry the pooled moisture away from the drain pan, it can increase the humidity in the zone, making your home feel muggy and uncomfortable.

If the pan overflows, the water can damage floors and drywall, and potentially cause mold and mildew issues. In addition, if moisture is not moved away from the unit, it can cause rust and other issues that can shorten your AC system’s life.

If you are currently experiencing a clogged AC drain line, it's important to contact a reputable HVAC contractor for repair service as soon as possible to prevent further damage. An HVAC.com advisor can connect you with a local technician.

Signs of a Clogged Condensate Drain Line

There are a few AC drain line clog symptoms to look out for. If you own a newer HVAC system, it may have a sensor that warns you when your air conditioner drain line is clogged. However, most homeowners don’t have air conditioners with sensors. Look for signs of a clogged AC drain line in other ways, such as:

  • Water collected in the AC drain pan: As long as the drainage system is functioning properly, water should not sit in the drain pan for an extended period. An AC drain line should carry the water away from the HVAC pan promptly
  • Flooding or puddles: Water may overflow from the pan, causing water puddles around the unit
  • Rust: Rust or other types of water damage along the base of the air conditioner could point to a clogged air conditioner drain line
  • Mildew odor coming from the vents: The moisture can cause unpleasant smells to circulate throughout the house

Can I Unclog a Condensate Line Myself?

If there is minimal damage caused by the clogged condensate drain line, you can consider unclogging an AC drain line yourself. However, if your AC system stops working or you notice mold or mildew odors coming from the unit and vents, the AC drain line clog may be causing more serious issues. Complex AC repair issues require an HVAC technician.

How to Unclog Your Air Conditioner’s Drain Line

You can unclog a clogged AC drain line in just a few minutes using minimal tools if you catch the clog early enough. Many HVAC professionals suggest that you avoid using harsh chemicals such as Drano to unclog the block.

Is the AC drain line clogged? Follow these steps:

  1. Collect supplies: You may need a bucket or pan to catch the water in the line, a wire brush or pipe cleaner to gently unclog the line, and a cleaning solution such as diluted bleach or vinegar for how to clean AC drain line.
  2. Turn off the AC’s power: Working with water and electricity can be a dangerous combination. Shut off the air conditioner’s power at the breaker before you get started.
  3. Move the cap from the drain line: Look for a cap at the top of the line. Remove the cap so you can take a better look at the clog.
  4. Look for the clog: Once you remove the cap, check for obvious blockages from hair or dirt. If you can remove the clog without pushing it further down the pipe, pull it out carefully.
  5. Loosen debris in the line: Use the pipe cleaner or wire brush to loosen debris inside the line. Gently push it into the line while rotating it or moving it back and forth to help dislodge the clog. You can also try and use a wet/dry vacuum to remove the clog. Attach the vacuum hose to the access point or hold it tightly against the opening, creating a seal. Use the vacuum to suction out the clog or debris from the drain line. This method can help remove small clogs or blockages.
  6. Pour in diluted vinegar or bleach solution: To further break down any clogs, pour the AC drain line cleaner you made into the pipe and let it sit for half an hour or longer, depending on the severity of the clog.
  7. Flush the pipe: Drain the solution and rinse the pipe with fresh water.
  8. Monitor the system’s performance: If the AC drain pipe is still clogged, you may need to contact an HVAC technician for help.

How Often Should I Check the Air Conditioner Drain Line?

Is your HVAC drain line clogged? Checking the AC drain line periodically can stop bigger issues from occurring. If the line backs up and the water has nowhere to go, the pan could overflow, flooding the area or causing moisture damage.

Make it a habit to check the AC condensate line each time you change the air conditioner’s filter. It’s far easier to unclog AC drain lines if they’re monitored regularly. Look for excess water in the drain pan as one of the first signs of a clogged AC drain line.

One of the best ways to prevent a clogged AC drain line is to schedule seasonal inspections for your HVAC system. A trained technician will evaluate the components of the unit, including the drain line. It’s recommended to have an air conditioner tune up performed each year before the arrival of warm weather.
