Archegos fallout exposes risks from less regulated family offices, says former SEC counsel

 March 31, 2021

Introduction

It is learning experience for me as well. I like to figure out that those people hedging on stocks, borrow hundreds of billion dollars in order to manipulate the market. As an investor, I should not care too much about market value, try to focus on intrinsic value and wait those big gamblers settle down.

Archegos family group

Here is the article.

KEY POINTS
  • Lightly regulated family offices could be a problem for the U.S. financial industry, said Thomas Gorman, a former counsel at the Securities and Exchanges Commission.
  • Risks posed by large family offices came under the spotlight after Archegos was forced to unwind more than $20 billion in trades in certain stocks including media giants ViacomCBS and Discovery.
  • Amy Lynch, a former SEC regulator, warned that the Archegos episode may not be an isolated event.
  • Family offices have grown in the U.S., but that segment remains lightly regulated — and that could be a problem for the financial industry, warned a former counsel at the Securities and Exchanges Commission.

The risks posed by large family offices came under the spotlight after the multibillion-dollar Archegos Capital Management was last week forced to unwind more than $20 billion in trades.

The move led to a severe sell-off in certain stocks including U.S. media giants ViacomCBS and Discovery, rattling the broader market. Shares of several big banks said to be involved in the trades also saw their own stocks tank.

Microservices patterns by Chris Richardson: 2.5 Partitioning Strategies Event Driven Microservices

March 31, 2021

Here is the link.

Partitioning strategies ...

  • Partition by noun, e.g. Catalog service
  • Partition by verb, e.g. Checkout UI
  • Partition by subdomain
  • Single responsibility principle

Chris Richardson: 2.4 Benefits and Drawbacks of Microservices Event Driven Microservices

March 31, 2021

Here is the link.

smaller, simpler applications

  • Easier to understand and develop
Scales development: develop, deploy and scale each service independently.

Improves fault isolation

Memory leak - take down the entire monolithic
Only impact only one service, leave other services unaffected

Eliminate dependency on one technology - do not need same technology - Husk to implement one service

Eliminates long-term commitment to a single technology stack -> modular

Governance -

Two levels of architecture system-level, service-level

Easily try other technologies - Closure, node, play, python, Dropwizard, spring Boot, Scala

... and fail safely

Drawbacks of microservice
Complexity - Complexity of developing a complex system
Partial failure -
Multiple databases & transaction management e.g. Fun with eventual consistency

Distributed transaction - CAP theorem - event driven
Complexity of testing a distributed system

Selenium - RESTFUL API

Microservice testing strategies
Brittle, slow, costly
Reliable, fast, ...
Complexity of deploying and operating a distributed system - you need a lot of automation

Automating - cloud found, docker cluster solution - infrastructure - solution do exist

Developing and deploying features that span multiple services requires careful consideration

When to use it?
Context dependent -
In the beginning:
You don't need it
It will slow you down

Later on:
You need it
Refactoring is painful

Microservices are necessary but insufficient
Microservice-based application architecture

Deployment People

Here is the link.

I like to take time to learn Microservice architecture lectured by Chris Richardson.

Goal of partitioning

Most changes affect only a single service =>

Develop and deploy independently in parallel with other changes

Another goal:

Separate components with conflicting resource requirements => Scale more easily

Functional decomposing

Finviz -> Oversold | March 31 2021 | GRAY, WMPN two stocks

WMPN stock: William Penn Bancorporation's (NASDAQ:WMPN) Shareholders Are Down 66% On Their Shares

 March 31, 2021

Here is the article.

What is the argument? Oversold?

If you are building a properly diversified stock portfolio, the chances are some of your picks will perform badly. Long term William Penn Bancorporation (NASDAQ:WMPN) shareholders know that all too well, since the share price is down considerably over three years. Unfortunately, they have held through a 66% decline in the share price in that time. The more recent news is of little comfort, with the share price down 49% in a year. There was little comfort for shareholders in the last week as the price declined a further 70%.

View our latest analysis for William Penn Bancorporation

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During the three years that the share price fell, William Penn Bancorporation's earnings per share (EPS) dropped by 7.8% each year. The share price decline of 30% is actually steeper than the EPS slippage. So it seems the market was too confident about the business, in the past.

Qorvo: 5G top 3 - Ericsson, Qualcomm, Qorvo

March 30, 2021

I asked my friend Ni Jun, Apple engineer, and he told me top 3 5G companies are Ericsson, Qualcomm, Qorvo. I bought 4500 shares of NOK stocks, and I like to learn more about 5G and semiconductor business in 2021.

Qorvo

Qorvo is an American semiconductor company that designs, manufactures, and supplies radio-frequency systems for applications that drive wireless and broadband communications, as well as foundry services. The company, which trades on NASDAQ, was created by the merger of TriQuint Semiconductor and RF Micro Devices, which was announced in 2014 and completed on January 1, 2015.[2][3] The headquarters for the company originally were in both Hillsboro, Oregon (home of TriQuint), and Greensboro, North Carolina (home of RFMD),[4] but in mid-2016 the company began referring to its North Carolina site as its exclusive headquarters.[5]

History[edit]

Qorvo was created on January 1, 2015, with the merger of TriQuint Semiconductor and RF Micro Devices (RFMD).[2] In June 2015, the new company became a component of the S&P 500, replacing tobacco company Lorillard.[6] At the time of joining the S&P 500, Qorvo was valued at $12 billion.[6] The company employs more than 8,000 people.[7] As of mid-2016, the Oregon plant alone was employing almost 1,000 people.[5]

In 2016 GreenPeak Technologies was acquired, adding ultra-low power, short range wireless connected home and IoT solutions to its portfolio. GreenPeak Technologies was best known for its Zigbee chips of which they had sold 100 million in 2015. GreenPeak Technologies is headquartered in Utrecht, The Netherlands. [8]

In 2020, Qorvo acquired Irish semi-conductor company Decawave in a deal that was estimated to be worth $400 million. [9]

Ameritrade.com IRA portfolio: Unrealized gains - over $4000 losses

March 30, 2021

Introduction

It is so risky to invest on biotech stocks. My biotech positions are around $10,000 US dollars. I like to write down what I should learn from my experience.

My positions

It is hard for an investor to hold those GRAY stock with price at $35/ share. I purchased 330 shares with loss of $772 dollars.

TFSA portfolio: What to learn as an investor?

March 30, 2021

Introduction

I spend at least one hour a day to work on stock investment, and this is the second year. What I should learn from my own experience in terms of TFSA account, I like to write about the topic. It is about greedy and also speculation, timing and good faith to learn more about biotechnologies.

My positions

I had two big losses based on today's market value.

I bought NOK stocks when wallstbets pumped NOK stock's price around $5.2, and I showed up with greedy, did not sell with gains over $10,000, and next morning I purchased another 1000 share at price 5.7.

This is the lesson I like to keep it and remind myself for rest of my life. Greedy is such a big issue as an investor.

GRAY stock is another story. The price went down from $30/ share, I applied marginal safety 35 to 45%. And then I learned that I should not purchase 600 shares at price $8.0/ share. I have to be patient and wait.

Now I just need to let those positions sit in my portfolio for another one or two years.
