Case study: China labor market in Coronavirus

第二波经济冲击 近三亿农民工如何承受?

在这波全球减单效应的冲击下,中国工厂的生存方法有几种:裁员、减薪、休无薪假、或是五天8小时制(即不让工人加班)。

Here is the article.

The Most Common Mistake Beginning Day Traders Make (and How to Avoid!)

Here is the link.

I've been coaching people who want to learn how to be a day trader since 2013 and there is one mistake I continue to see over and over again. I'm not surprised by it considering when I was a new trader and just getting started, I did the same exact thing. The problem is very tricky because it arises from a natural human emotion that society tells us is how we "should react". In the business of being a day trader however, what society tells us is often times wrong. If you want to find consistency as a trader and turn day trading into a side hustle or a main stream of income, you need know how to avoid such common mistakes. I show you some of my real life day trading results to illustrate the problem and mos importantly, how to avoid it.

Apr.30 -- Royal Dutch Shell Plc Chief Executive Officer Ben van Beurden discusses the company's dividend cut, its debt outlook and the challenges facing the oil industry amid the slump triggered by the coronavirus pandemic. He speaks on "Bloomberg Markets: European Open."

One of comments:

at 03:36 "Our dividend yield was at a level that very clearly also signaled to the market that our dividend was seen to be at risk" - this is such a bizarre explanation and almost pathetic in a circular logic. As a dividend investor i find the justification unacceptable. he does go on to make better justifications at the end of the interview and talking of

Julia reading style - love marketwatch comment and read 30 minutes a time

May 2, 2020

Introduction

It is hard for me to get rid of wechat reading habit. I should spend more time to read high quality content. Where they are, and where are my interest as a 53 year old, ambitious to make millions in this bear market/ bull market rally stage. Today I started to fall in love with comment reading from Marketwatch.com

First article

Here is the article.

First of all, I like to read good writing with very good motivation. Compared to Quora, this is much better for me to spend time on. Quora.com content is entertainment and easy to build my brand. But the content is lack of depth and communication between people.

Opinion: Too many investors are failing to grasp that the coronavirus recession may be longer and tougher

Here is the article.

I love to read comments and I do think that it is important for me to learn how to think in terms of economy and market, capitalism.

Bill Ackman: Getting Back Up [The Knowledge Project Ep. #82]

Here is the interview with all the transcript.

We talk about how he’s bounced back from the brink of failure not once but twice, the lessons he’s learned from his parents and raising kids of his own, his information sources, making big bets, the world today and where we might be headed.

I think of philanthropy as something that is not genetic, it is learned, and it was something that my dad reinforced pretty much from the time I was a kid.
I’ve always had this view that success is not a straight line up. If you read the stories of successful people, almost every successful person has had to deal with some degree of hardship, whether that hardship is personal hardship, health-related hardship, or a business issue.
I’ve always had the view that how successful you are is really a function of how you deal with failure. If you deal with failure well and you persist, you have a high probability of being successful.
I admire people who take on unbelievable challenges and succeed.
One of the nice things psychologically about going to an office is that you go, you focus, and then when you come home it’s easier to leave it behind and it’s much harder to do that when your office phone is in the TV room.
I actually think that people will be that much more desperate for human connection after this experience than they were before.

Stock research - Canadian Natural Resources Limited (CNQ.TO)

May 2, 2020

Introduction

I just could not believe that I Only purchased 20 shares on March 27, 2020. And there is over 63.30% return in less than 40 days. I have to review my decision process, how come I do not purchase more shares, holding $26,000 Canadian bond at that time.

CNQ.TO stock research

I have to think about how to do a better job to invest more, not just $2000 dollars on oil stocks and also include Air Canada stocks.

When everything is on sale, do not take out a bucket. Take a truck to load them all.

Bill Ackman: Getting Back Up

Legendary activist investor, Bill Ackman shares the lessons he learned growing up, what drives him, how to overcome failure, and so much more.

I will play again and then take some notes.

How ‘the single best trade of all time’ netted one investor a $2.6 billion profit

Here is the link.

Ackman explained the thinking behind the hedge in a recent podcast.
“We said, ‘You know what, we’ve got this massive position ... which maybe has the potential to double if credit spreads widen to where they were during the financial crisis,” he told the Knowledge Project. “‘But if they don’t, and the government takes the right steps, this hedge could be worth zero, and the stock market could go right back up to where it was.’ So we made the decision to exit.”
At that point, Ackman explained, he got out with his tidy profit and started buying stocks. He then invested more than $3 billion in risk assets, a move that also proved prescient as the Fed started pumping money into the system and stocks rallied hard off the coronavirus bottom.

Suncor energy - stock research

Here is the article.

While the abruptness of an oil rebound is difficult to project, investors would be better served by looking to firms with healthy cash flows and stellar balance sheets to avoid the risk of bankruptcy in a lower-for-longer oil price environment that will undoubtedly threaten the economics of many heavy crude producers in the Albertan oil sands.

Facts about Suncor energy

Warren Buffett’s preferred way to bet on the Canadian oil patch is Suncor Energy, and it’s not hard to see why. The company has stellar integrated operations and one of the healthiest balance sheets in the oil sands, with an optimal 0.43 debt-to-equity ratio and $2 billion worth of cash, cash equivalents, and short-term investments. The company is destined to be a survivor, even if oil prices were to ever flirt with the negatives again.

  1. 0.43 debt-to-equity ratio
  2. $2 billion worth of cash, cash equivalents, and short-term investments
After Suncor’s 76% bounce off the March bottom, the dividend yield is now more modest at 7%, but the Canadian oil stock is still worth picking up if you’re a long-term income investor who wants to invest alongside Buffett with a better cost basis!
Stay hungry. Stay Foolish.

Actionable Items

I need to pay attention to more than 10% gain in one day or one week, 50% gain in less than one month definitely should be under my review.

Julia's crafting skills - Lowest common ancestor

April 30, 2020

Introduction

I may put myself in danger position since I stop practicing coding using C# last two months. I was busy with stock market and learn how to control my psychology as an investor, and learn a few things how to understand market swings and economy. Good thing is that I still work as a volunteer as an mock interviewer, I keep myself open to top talent in the world. I just learn one thing a time, one crafting skills a time. 43 minutes a mock interview session really helps me to go back to practice. What I did is to practice the algorithm after the mock interview, I like to learn from the mock interviewee and try to write a C# solution using the same idea.

My crafting skills

Here is the post.

C# post order traversal and return p or q in recursive function

May 1, 2020
It is optimal solution I learned from mock interview on April 30, 2020 at 10:00 PM from the mock interviewee. He is ex-facebook engineer, and he wrote the code and tested, it took him less than 25 minutes. Here is the blog to document the practice.
I spent over 30 minutes to practice using C#. Here are my highlights:
  1. Apply postorder traversal, bottom up, count nodes found and return Lowest Common Ancestor (LCA);
  2. Think about C# data structure, using strong typing data structure Tuple;
  3. Choose data structure Tuple<TreeNode, int> instead of ArrayList; Spend 10 minutes to warm up, find Item1 property usage;
  4. More on step 2, two tips learned from failed test case, [3,5,1,6,2,0,8, null, null, 7, 4], 5, 4, return should be 5. Move ternary experession to the end, and add two parentheses to avoid grammar error. Need to work on C# basics.
  5. Play with ternary expression and avoid ambiguity;
  6. Remember if LCA is not found then Tuple.Item1 is null.
Add my practice to my collection of solutions written in 2019. Here is the post with various practice starting from May 2019.

            {
                return new Tuple<TreeNode, int>(null, 0);
            }

            var left = postOrderTraversal(root.left, p, q);
            if (left.Item1 != null)
            {
                return left;
            }

            var right = postOrderTraversal(root.right, p, q);
            if(right.Item1 != null)
            {
                return right;
            }

            int count = left.Item2 + right.Item2 + ((root == p || root == q) ? 1 : 0);
            if (count == 2)
            {
                return new Tuple<TreeNode, int>(root, 2);
            }

            return new Tuple<TreeNode, int>(null, count);
        }
    }
}

Actionable Items

I should be more creative after the mock interview. One thing I can think about is to learn how to communicate better through mock interview. One time I did not show confidence in the first three minutes, the interviewee just terminated the interview.

I also think about how to contribute better as an interviewer. Being an interviewer, the interviewee demonstrates super good performance; To me it reminded me to work hard, and also I like to push myself continue to practice algorithm. The problem solving thinking process is such problem area for me to improve, and I need to compare myself often and then I learn from the experience.

I like to add some voice recording, and I like to explain the idea using my understanding. It will help me to track my progress as well.

Case study: Lowest common ancestor

May 1, 2020

Introduction

It is the first interview I got the whole week. I worried about interviewing.io financial situation, and free anonymous interview is no longer affordable since some one has to pay the bill. A lot of layoffs last two months, people are flooding in job market for software engineer positions.

Mock interview case study

Here is the code.

Discussion we had on the mock interview:

The clever part is to return two things in recursive function. One is to find lowest common ancestor, if it is found then it should be returned; Second one is supporting role to calculate the node found. As we know, the node can be root node or any child node in binary tree. Using total nodes found is the technique to make it easy to identify the edge case: root node is one of nodes p or q, then another node is in subtree nodes.

One thing to make it more readable is to replace checking of return TreeNode null with node's count comparison to value 2 instead.

Interviewer feedback

Interviewee - an ex-facebook engineer

His second algorithm is also bug-free, here is the link.

Actionable items

May 25, 2020

The interviewee is young and top talent engineer. After the mock interview, he saw my feedback, and then he decided to get connected on interviewing.io. I should ask a linkedin.com connection from him, so I can track his career success later on.

Yahoo finance conversations - OVV.TO stock research

April 30, 2020

Introduction

It is second day with over 10% gains for OVV.TO stock. I like to continue to work on research, and this time I came cross the conversations and then found articles to read related to OVV.TO.

Stock research

It is the first time I came cross yahoo finance stock conversations. I had problems with VAB.TO when the price went down 10% back in March. Now I knew where to find latest information.

WOW! This could partially explain the move in price in addition to general market sentiment. Follow the smart money: https://fintel.io/sob/us/ovv

How to time the market and come out good ideas at work?

Introduction

I spent time to review C# code and also .ASPX code, and I like to work on something simple. It is important for me to build good habit to review my own code, and follow good rules to write code.

Two day project

I spent two days to review the code I wrote, and then I make it simple, much more readable as well.

Working full time at the office last four weeks

What is my favorite part of holding the full time job in April 2020?

What is most important - technology or basic needs?

April 30, 2020

Introduction

It is important to have no worries about basic need, specially in this coronavirus period, 53 years old. I felt so depressed on March 18 to take two sick days, since no one felt safe to stay in the office while outside news kept coming with bad news. I thought about my rent, rental property in Florida, all the cash I have, even though outstanding talent people in my age or my ex-classmates and friend retired at age 52, I am still worrying about food on table.

Technology or basic need

I work on software engineering job but I knew that it is not easy for me to be outstanding. There are so many bias formed through 2001 to 2010, even though I continuously worked hard but I still could not be confident to solve my housing problem in the city of Vancouver.

On March 19, 2020, I felt that it is a good solution to choose renting instead of owning. I do not have to worry about paying mortgage. I felt so good to have a full time job and also I can take less risk to adjust my life style, because I start to get used to be frugal, only shopping for necessity, and only keep minimum relationship, avoid relatives and stay isolated in Canada.

CSS short review - maintenance of website

Introduction

It is my fifth week to go back to work after two weeks break starting from March 19 to Arpil 1, and I like the life to work and got used to work full time very quickly. I need to learn somethings important about CSS, so that I can better manage the code base I have for my full time work. I need to take time to read good content about style, how to develop and maintain CSS code. It is better for me to master the basics since coronavirus is still here. A lot of people lose jobs every day, 30 million people in USA are unemployed and over 30 thousand jobs related to IT are gone as well.

CSS learning

I came cross the following reading materials, I enjoy reading and like to learn as well.

What to work on in my own choice - coding and design?

April 30, 2020

Introduction

It is serious lesson for me to learn as an investor. I did not know to sell high and buy low, since VAB.TO went up last month with gains $2000 dollars, and then in less than 12 business days, it went down with loss $1500 dollars. I did not learn the importance to sell high and buy low. From the lesson, I learn that I have to go back to simplify things at work, so that I can have more time to learn how to invest after the work. Technology eats my time, I have to think about Coronavirus, emergency, how I should support business without too much burden on myself as a software programmer. I am the only developer and then we like to continue to run business since we all have to live and do not like to get into debt.

As a single person, I should ask myself what I should do. If I have a position in my portfolio which went up 100% in one month, I should invest all my cash in TFSA on this position at the very beginning. Or just after 20% up.

Do not just blog the gains, think about from different angles. It is hard for a single person to make sound decisions on this investment.

I should hire the professional ones in China, or contact friends I know working for bank; pay $60 dollars one hour to get some advice.

April 29 2020 over 10% gains of Oil stocks

My decision making - two thousand dollars purchase of oil stocks

My worries - Write down first

I like to write down my worries to prepare better mental health, and good psychology as an investor. I worried about so many things so that I could not invest over $26,000 dollars in bonds when I chose to rebalance SPX and VDU etf, and I only spent $2000 to build Canadian oil stocks and Air Canada stocks. I missed the opportunity to build wealth through the market bottom.

My worries

I do like to write down a list of things I worried, and next time I should write down those worries and learn to measure them. Do not allow those emotions affect my decision making in investment.

Take mass hit - strong balance sheet, they can stand when the oil price is low. Once the demand is coming back, the price will come back.

There is no interest to sell the price around $20.00 dollars.

Support our startup interviewing.io

April 29, 2020

Introduction

It is tough time for every one and also for a startup company. I was busy last two years since every weekday 10:00 PM and weekend 10:00 PM for mock interview over 10 interviews, but right now the startup is in financial challenging time, I did not have mock interview last week. They are trying to focus on paid interviews.

Big thanks

I have those wonderful training as interviewer through last two years. I do believe that I developed so much strong muscle in terms of problem solving, algorithm research and coding crafting skills.

We have to think about how to make this small startup working again.

The 2% Stop Loss rule (Trading risk management)

Here is the link.

Risk management is one of the most important aspects of trading. How does one manage risk so that a run of losing trades doesn't wipe you out? How does one deal with the emotional risk of not acting on a stop loss? How much money do you risk in any trade? The 2% rule is by far the best way of managing all of these potential problems and ensuring that your position size for every trade is exactly spot on so you don't have to worry about the money - just focus on the charts and the discipline.

2% rule

Protects you from a run of losing trades

50 trades goes to zero.

R - Run
Enter share at R10.00
Stop loss at R9.00
Risk per share = R1.00

2% = R1000 (R50k portfolio)
Therefore buy 1000 shares

Risk Management Strategy For Trading

Here is the link.

Tell the story using my own words:

Given $10,000 capital to do day trading, set 2% as stop loss. Remember, 10 trades at most one day, if all of them fails, the total loss is 22%.

$200 for the loss of the trade.

Not a good trade

Profit per share  0.45
Stop loss per share 0.85

Keep ratio 2:1

Target price      $10.50
Entry price       $10.05
Stop loss price $9.20

Not a good trade - loss $0.85/ share to make $0.45/ share.  It should be like 2 : 1, not 1 : 2.

Good trade

Target price $130.00, you like to sell around $12.80, then it will be good, since ratio will be around 2: 1
