Blind: Facebook interview and offer from anonymous engineer

Facebook E6 - I made it!!!!!

Feb 2  687 Comments

I've studied so hard over the last months. Spent Christmas vacation leetcoding and doing mocks with other blinders[1] and today finally the result came!

I passed E6 with flying colors!!! 😂🎊🤣🎉In the upcoming weeks I'll have the numbers. Maybe next week.

Not sure if I'll join (already made another post about it) but I'm still so incredibly happy that I wanted to share with you blind strangers! Thanks a lot.

I have so many questions but I'll make another post.

EDIT: as requested preparation strategy (copy and paste from another post I made https://www.teamblind.com/post/244k8jBK?cid=11919558)
System Design:
I have ZERO hands-one experience with DISTRIBUTED systems (I do experience with system design, mainly embedded). I didn't know anything when I started my preparation.
I read DDIA and System Design Interview ( http://bit.ly/2N4NaTe ) book (much better than grokking) and I did tons of mocks in the 2 months before
the interview (like everyday). I also did a couple of paid on interviewing.io which were very useful.
InfoQ videos are extremely useful. I lost count of how many I watched. And of course, countless of articles online to dig
deeper in some area. Everything was new to me. It was a lot of work.
Here you can see an old (bad performance) of mine, but at least you can get an idea about the format I used: https://bit.ly/36fxRhk
Unfortunately the idea of recording my sessions came very late to my mind. And yes, this is also self-promoting.

Coding:
FB is very predictable, so stick to LC tagged questions and do lots of mocks. Train on speed and debugging
manually, like I did here: https://bit.ly/2NB6vvz
Some questions were not on LC but very similar. One interviewer asked me 5 (five) questions, because I was stupid
honest about having seen 3 of them (all hard) and knew optimal solution which I outlined clearly.

Behavioral:
Do NOT underestimate this one! I started practicing and collecting stories only close to the end, but for senior positions
is probably the most important. Luckily it went decent.

UPDATE: some people are asking how on earth can you join FB as E6 without any DISTRIBUTED system design experience. Well, that's exactly what I asked myself many times and also told the recruiter! My CV does not lie and I'm sure they can read it. I do however have experience in system design (embedded mostly) and I plan to join a team (if I decide to join FB) that matches my expertise. I'm mostly looking at FLR where I already saw some openings for OS/kernel/system engineers.

UPDATE2: I'm getting a lot of request for mock interviews. Send me an email with timezones, availability, YoE at interview.me.mock@gmail.com
I want to make some videos so I'm looking for someone to interview. Expect delay in response. If you have upcoming interview please state it so that I can prioritize. People on blind have helped me in the past, so I want to return the favor.

UPDATE3: I created a discord server because people are asking where to find a pal to mock with https://discord.gg/6AAKTPv3jK join and find a match. I can also help with mocks over the weekend until COVID and lockdown is around.

UPDATE4: I gave 50 free mocks. None worth recording unfortunately. I will not give any more free mock interviews. Feel free to join the discord channel for finding a mock partner. There are 1K users now. I can do only paid on request if I have time.

PREPARATION DETAILS:
Started in May 2020 with only algorithms before any company contacted me because I wanted to try Google in 2021.
Watched: MIT 6006 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtSuA80QTyo&list=PLUl4u3cNGP61Oq3tWYp6V_F-5jb5L2iHb
Watched: Coursera part 1,2,3 of https://www.coursera.org/specializations/algorithms
Watched: Graph course from Google enginer - https://www.udemy.com/course/graph-theory-algorithms/
Read books: Algorithms illuminated 1,2,3 (now I'm reading 4)
Read books: Competitive programming 4 part I https://cpbook.net/
In mid-november (two months before the final, I started with sys design, I wish I started much earlier).
Read books: Design-data intensive application (Klappman) and System Design Interview (Alex Zu).
Start mocking regularly. My first session was barely a hire for E4 (feedback from FB E6 from interviewing.io).
I spent 1400 Euro on mocks! It's a investment. Period. It worked. Don't care what you think.
Watched: InfoQ video from Netflix/Twitter/Amazon https://www.youtube.com/user/MarakanaTechTV
Watched: Some facebook video from their channel. This one multiple times! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5RfFhMwRAic
Read: counteless of papers: Dynamo, Memcached, Redis, and other I don't remember.

I was able to do all of this because of COVID! I guess there is a silver line in every cloud otherwise it would have
been impossible.

Now I'm continuing my preparation for Google and I'm changing it because I know it's a different ball game and I don't think I have a chance.
However, I am

Watching: MIT 6046 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2P-yW7LQr08&list=PLUl4u3cNGP6317WaSNfmCvGym2ucw3oGp
Keep doing mocks but not focusing on speed but rather on complex problem with a very vague problem description.

The hiring process is broken. What a surprise... My answer? Suck it up and deal with it.
What we can do to change it is to become all code monkeys and good at it so that they change it,
like Square or Stripe is doing! (I would love to work for them!)

Training!
This is the most important part. I kept training regularly 4-5 times a week. In the gym (boxing) until they were open
and powerlifting (home). My bench went from 130Kg to 145Kg during my preparation. Highest in my entire life.
Squat is still 185Kg. Deadlift I stopped. Don't have time. But it is still around 210Kg. Body weight is 78Kg.

GTE.TO vs PXT.TO: Yahoo -> Finance -> Conversation

PXT.TO- one of the other oil stock I have been watching (suggest you look at that ticker vs the PARXF due to volume). They are a Canadian (Calgary) based oil company with operations in the same geographic location as GTE.

Here is what they posted Wednesday 8/4, the day after GTE announced
- Beat EPS by 500% ($0.14->$0.72)
- Reduced float by 20%
- Initiated a dividend (2.5% currently)
-$1B/year run rate revenue
- They have no debt

And what happened?- the Share price dropped from $20.35 (close Tuesday) to $18.61 (close Wednesday) which is about a 9% drop (sound familiar??) GTE from $0.6250 (close Monday) to $0.5639- slightly higher than 9%

My point is not to pump this stock or post fancy gifs that we are going to the moon, rather there is a disconnect in the market between the fundaments and the share price of at least these 2 oil stocks with very similar geographic oil operations and HQ's. GTEs is exasperated by the holding/selling of GTM.

So if you are a trader - trade on. If you are an investor and believe that company fundamentals can not forever (6 months- 1 year?) be separated from share price- hold on. Otherwise sell and look elsewhere.

My last pyramid down is $0.55 to increase my position about 33% (my trade did not get executed last week) and considering moving that over to PXT.TO or splitting it. After that, I am at my max % portfolio exposure to oil/energy. Saying again the current fundamentals say we should be at about $1.3/share with GTE to yield an average share price of about $0.9 as we exit 2021

RIG stock: ultra-deepwater drillships | Value investing

  • Here is the article.

  • Transocean delays deliveries for the world’s first 8th gen ultra-deepwater drillships

  • VESSELS

Offshore drilling contractor Transocean has agreed with Sembcorp Marine’s subsidiary, Jurong Shipyard Pte Ltd (JSPL), on the delayed delivery of two ultra-deepwater drillships.

Transocean said on Monday that the agreement was made with the shipyard for the Deepwater Atlas and Deepwater Titan drillships.

These two drillships were ordered by Transocean back in 2014 for a price of $540 million each, but the deliveries have been postponed several times.

As part of the new agreement, Jurong has agreed to accept deferred payment for both rigs, the rig owner added. The next-generation drillships with ultra-deepwater drilling capability are being constructed in Singapore.

According to Transocean, the Deepwater Atlas and Deepwater Titan are the world’s first eighth-generation ultra-deepwater drillships and the only rigs to feature a 3,000,000 pound hook-load.

These drillships are the most capable and highest specification rigs in the world and will include the first 20,000 psi well control system. These rigs are also designed and equipped to optimize fuel consumption, reduce emissions and thus minimize the associated carbon footprint of each offshore project.

Transocean – Deepwater Atlas

According to Transocean, the delivery of this drillship is now expected to be in December 2021. Upon delivery, Transocean will make a $50 million payment to JSPL; the balance of payments owed to the shipyard, or approximately $370 million, will be payable during a five-year period following delivery pursuant to a secured financing arrangement with the shipyard.

Transocean also has agreed with Beacon that drilling operations on the Shenandoah project in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico are expected to start during the third quarter of 2022. Transocean expects Beacon to begin drilling on its Shenandoah project utilizing the Deepwater Atlas following a final investment decision from Beacon and its partners. That decision is expected to be made on or before 31 July 2021.

Transocean – Deepwater Titan

The delivery of this drillship is now expected to be in May 2022. Upon delivery, Transocean will pay JSPL 80 per cent of amounts owed, or approximately $350 million. Twenty per cent of amounts owed, or approximately $90 million will be deferred and payable over a five-year period following delivery pursuant to a deferred payment arrangement with the shipyard.

Back in May 2021, Transocean said that Chevron had postponed the contract from H1 2022 to H2 2022. As a result, the end date had also been moved from H1 2027 to H2 2027.

Introduction

It is easy for me to design my investment strategies. Find a stock like CRTX, and invest 100 shares with capital around $3000 dollars. Even though I could not fully understand biotech and it's potential, hold the stock.

It is better to invest on CRTX and hold it until the stock went up from Feb. to August 12, up 300%.

Sanas startup : Voice technologies | Accent reduction

Here is the article.

About Sanas.ai

Derek Gallimore interviews Andrés Pérez Soderi of Sanas.ai. Sanas makes a promising breakthrough by creating an accent conversion technology for BPOs and other companies in different industries.

The Accent Conversion Technology Set To Revolutionize Call Centers

Language barrier is one of the common downsides of outsourcing customer service and other tasks, both onshore and offshore. Sometimes, this even leads to misunderstanding between the agents and their customers, which lowers down customer experience and satisfaction.

This is what Sanas wants to break down through their technology. In this episode, Derek and Andrés will discuss the company’s role in revolutionizing call centers and other industries that can benefit through their service.

Introduction to accent conversion and Sanas.ai

Different accents, in a way, can hinder two parties in fully understanding each other. Sanas, through their revolutionary accent conversion technology, is here to make communication much easier.

Andrés said accent conversion is basically using a machine learning algorithm to match accents. The idea for this technology started when the founders have a Guatemalan friend who was working at a call center in California. They said, “Who’s better to handle technical support than someone that codes all day and all night and goes to Stanford?”

However, the friend was “underperforming quite a bit,” which was “really, really interesting because he’s the perfect call center agent.” However, they realized that since he’s from Guatemala and is tasked to answer questions coming from the United States, there is “a large mismatch” when it comes to accents.

After seeing that, Andrés said that they “got [their] thinking hats on, we got to work, hired a fantastic team, and built the fantastic technology.” From there, the product got funding from Village Global, “which is a pretty large venture capital firm who has fantastic LPs, such as Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, and Mark Zuckerberg.”

Call center concerns and how Sanas can help

Andrés said that Sanas is ‘consistently gathering, consistently checking, authenticating data in different ways in order to be sure that we’re always one step ahead of what could be needed.” He said they want users to have a “natural experience,” that’s why they’ll just convert the accent while retaining the tone of voice and inflection points. They’ll only change the accent, leaving “everything else completely untouched.”

Misunderstandings can “cause huge issues and [increase] average handle time,” which can result in “pretty big drops and customer satisfaction.” Andrés notes that they’re not saying that one accent is better than the other, it’s just that the mismatch is quite difficult. This is why some companies “pay over $40,000 per agent per year more to hire someone in the United States than to hire someone offshore.”

They aim to close the accent gap, “so that everyone starts [to have] a fair and equal shot at being a fantastic customer service representative, no matter where they’re stationed, no matter where they’re from, and no matter what form of English they speak.”

Further, the Sanas executive said they want to “make their software into a product that has no downsides for call centers.” He noted they’ve thought proactively and considered “the nuances that could come from every deployment in every different area of industry that their call centers are catering to.”

Here are some features of Sanas’ accent conversion software that can truly benefit call centers:

  • Low CPU utilization. It doesn’t affect the computer.
  • Perfectly integratable. The software can be integrated into over 800 communication apps
  • Excellent data security. The data never leaves the computer, so “the data security is as high as it could be.”

Andrés stated that they “want call centers to win,” and they see their software as “something that is very, very transformative.”

Sanas’ goal to help different verticals

Sanas’ goal “is quite ambitious.” Andrés revealed that they want “to help the world understand and be understood.” To do that, he said they’re looking to engage in basically every form of digital communication that can be out there. They’re thinking of helping spur the following verticals’ transformation through their accent conversion software.

  • Call centers. To boost seamless communication
  • Media. For movie dubbing, among others
  • Video game streaming. Since video game streamers sometimes have trouble with accent mismatches with their audiences
  • Education. Studies found out that “if you hear your own voice speaking in the accent that you want to speak in, then the positive reinforcement actually makes you learn two to three times as quickly.”

Further, Andrés concluded that the company’s goal is to help the most people as possible so they feel confident as they speak. They want people to understand, and be understood.

“This is why we signed up for this crazy roller coaster that is building something so ambitious,” said Andrés.

Partner opportunity

Sanas is offering two BPOs (one in India and one in the Philippines) the opportunity to use their product for free. They are giving away 2 x 12-month trials, with zero tie-ins.

They will be working in partnership with the just two successful call centers to publish co-branded case studies and white papers.
