Power BI is a powerful data analytics and visualization tool that allows business users to monitor data, analyze trends, and make decisions. In this course, Helen Wall focuses on the front end of the Power BI application—the dashboard—where users interact with charts and graphs that communicate trends in their data. Throughout this course, Helen steps through how to design and customize the setup of visuals and charts to make it easy to use, understand, and interact with the dashboard model. Learn how to work with data from open-source websites, create visuals such as heatmaps and sparklines, compare multiple variables with trendlines and violin plots, and build engaging maps. To wrap up, she demonstrates how to create and share your finished product: an intuitive, engaging dashboard.

Learning objectives

  • Explain how to access data from various data sources.
  • Differentiate a table from a matrix.
  • Describe what is displayed in charts and diagrams on a dashboard.
  • Distinguish between ArcGIS and ESRI mapping.
  • Determine the most effective visual for a dashboard.
  • Review the components used in creating an interactive dashboard.
  • Examine the means by which dashboards can be shared.

Timothy D. Sands

Timothy D. Sands (born March 26, 1958) is an American materials engineer, researcher and the 16th president of Virginia Tech.[1] Sands previously served as the acting president and as the provost of Purdue University.

Education[edit]

Sands earned his B.S. with Highest Honors in Engineering Physics in 1980, his M.S. in Material Science and Engineering in 1981, and his Ph.D. in Material Science and Engineering in 1984, all from the University of California, Berkeley.[2]

Current research[edit]

Sands has published more than 260 papers and has 16 patents in nanotechnology and microelectronics. Sands' current research focus is on the development of novel nanocomposite materials for environmentally friendly and cost-effective solid-state lighting, direct conversion of heat to electrical power and thermoelectric refrigeration.[3] Sands is considered a leader in the field of light-emitting diodes (LEDs).[4]

Career[edit]

Sands began his career with an internship as a researcher at the Solar Energy Research Institute (SERI), now known as the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, Colorado where he focused his efforts on renewable energy research. Following his graduation from U.C. Berkeley's doctoral program in Materials Science and Engineering in 1984, Sands continued his career as a member of the technical staff of the New Jersey-based technology firm Bellcore, now known as Telcordia. In 1991, Sands became the director of the Thin Films and Interface Science Research Group, and in 1992 he became the director of the Nonvolatile Memory Research Group.[5]

UC Berkeley[edit]

Sands left industry in 1993 to return to academia as a professor in the Materials Science and Engineering department at his alma mater, U.C. Berkeley. In 1997, Sands became the Chair of the Applied Science and Technology Graduate Group at U.C. Berkeley.

Morgan Stanley says the stock market is ‘disconnected from reality’ and it’s going to hit bottom this Spring

US stocks are ripe for a selloff after prematurely pricing in a pause in Federal Reserve rate hikes, according to Morgan Stanley strategists.

“While the recent move higher in front-end rates is supportive of the notion that the Fed may remain restrictive for longer than appreciated, the equity market is refusing to accept this reality,” a team led by Michael Wilson wrote in a note.

Wilson — a staunch Wall Street bear who correctly predicted last year’s selloff when US equities posted their worst performance since 2008  — expects deteriorating fundamentals, along with Fed hikes that are coming at the same time as an earnings recession, to drive equities to an ultimate low this spring. “Price is about as disconnected from reality as it’s been during this bear market,” the strategists said.

Last week, yields on US two-year notes exceeded 10-year yields by the most since the early 1980s, a sign of flagging confidence in the economy’s ability to withstand additional rate increases. Meanwhile, US equities have seen one of the strongest starts to a year on record, though the rally has started to cool as Fed Chair Jerome Powell’s outlook for further rate increases weighed on sentiment.

US inflation data could be a catalyst to bring investors back to reality, and get stocks in line with bonds again, if prices rose more than expected, Wilson said, while noting that expectations for such a result have been growing. The data on Tuesday is predicted to show consumer prices increased 0.5% in January from a month earlier, spurred by higher gasoline costs. That would mark the biggest gain in three months.

Wilson sees the S&P 500 ending the year at 3,900 index points, about 4.7% below where the gauge closed on Friday, with a rough ride to get there. He expects stocks to fall as earnings estimates come down, before rebounding in the second half of the year.

“The risk-reward is as poor as it’s been at any time during this bear market,” Wilson wrote. “The reality for equities is that monetary policy remains in restrictive territory in the context of an earnings recession that has now begun in earnest.”

Other strategists are less pessimistic. Goldman Sachs Group Inc.’s Christian Mueller-Glissmann raised global stocks to neutral from underweight over the next three months citing less upside risk for bond yields and more confidence in a US soft landing.

That said, he remains selective as “higher valuations and more optimistic growth sentiment increases the risk of equity drawdowns.” While there’s limited room for Wall Street equities to rally further, “we still see attractive upside to non-US equities,” Mueller-Glissmann wrote in a note.

Twilio | 1500 layoffs

Twilio to lay off about 1,500 employees, or 17% of its workforce

KEY POINTS
  • Twilio on Monday announced plans to cut about 1,500 employees, or around 17% of its workforce, according to a blog post shared on the company’s website.
  • The announcement came after the company already laid off around 11% of its workforce as part of a restructuring plan in September.
  • Twilio had 8,992 employees as of September 2022, according to a company filing with the SEC.

 Twilio

on Monday announced plans to cut around 17% of its workforce, or roughly 1,500 jobs based on the 8,992 employees reported as of Sept. 30, 2022, in a company filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Twilio announced the layoffs in a blog post shared on its website.

The announcement came after the cloud communications software maker already laid off around 11% of its workforce as part of a restructuring plan in September.

In an email Monday to employees, CEO Jeff Lawson said the additional cuts were driven by the need to reorganize Twilio in order to succeed. “These changes hurt,” he wrote. “The weeks ahead will be about processing all this change and working together to acclimate to our new structure.”

Shares of Twilio were up more than 2% in morning trading Monday.

Lawson said Twilio is forming two business units to help the company spend less and become more efficient. One unit, Twilio Data & Applications, will be led by Elena Donio, and the second unit, Twilio Communications, will be led by Khozema Shipchandler. Lawson said that when executives were looking at these two business units, it was clear the company had gotten “too big,” particularly in communications.

Lawson said it is clear that Twilio needed to carry out “significant structural changes” in order to better execute its strategy.

“It is painful to part ways with so many talented people – but it’s necessary to get our two businesses into the right shape to succeed,” he said.

Twilio is one of more than a dozen tech companies to announce layoffs in recent months. Last week, Dell, Zoom and eBay disclosed significant cuts to their workforce. In January, Google revealed plans to lay off more than 12,000 workers, Microsoft announced plans to cut 10,000 employees and Salesforce said it planned to lay off 7,000 workers.
