721. Accounts merge

March 28, 2019

Introduction

I like to start to work on union find algorithms tagged on Leetcode.com. Leetcode 721 Accounts merg is the first algorithm I worked on.

721. Account merge

Here is my solution folder.

Understanding the challenges

It is time for me to review myself as a software programmer after one year Amazon Seattle onsite interview. Do I show strong determination to work hard and push myself hard to improve?

It is hard for me to tell. I did move on my personal finance research and was so glad to adopt frugality and minimalist as my life style choice, and I also had great time to learn new things from personal finance.

It is not easy for every one to advance his/ her career as a software programmer. What I can do is to continue to push myself to stay outside the comfortable zone. I need to solve more algorithms on Leetcode.

Here is the article.

 1.  改变H1-B抽签规则;
 2.  限制F-1停留时间;
 3.  取消H-4工作机会;
 4.  指定EB-5投资区域;
 5.  加快绿卡处理时间;

Union find algorithm

March 26, 2019

Introduction

It is time for me to study lecture notes one more time. I like to take some notes and then find most challenging time complexity analysis, and then make my own notes as well.

Lecture notes

Here is the lecture notes from the university of princeton.edu.

I always confuse with quick find, quick union and union find. What are the differences? I worked on so many union find algorithm on Hackerrank.com, I should go back to review them and write code again.

Longest univalue path

I asked the algorithm from 2018 to 2019 over 30 times on interviewing.io as a mock interviewer. I learn so many things over hundreds of interviwes last 365 days.

I like to work on union find algorithm and start to use the algorithm on mock interview as well. I started my first one with a senior developer in Sillicon Valley last night. I will continue to explore the algorithm, and learn together from interviewees on this most famous and applicable algorithm. It is so challenging and I could not be more happy to go for my weekly mock interviews.

Union find algorithm

I spent first twenty minutes to discuss with the interviwee last night. Since the interviewee could not relate to union find algorithm at all. It is such great opportunities for us to explore together how to solve the problem. What issues we have and we worked together the basics.

I like to master the algorithm. I already brought so many resources to help me master the algorithm, but I still could not make it this March 2019.

Here are facts:

1. I played hackerrank contest over 20 contests, won gold/ sliver/ bronze medal, a lot of times I had to work on graph algorithm, Krusal algorithm, minimum spanning tree;
2. I worked with my ex-coach last May over 100 minutes, I paid $100 Canada dollars for coaching session.
3. I worked on multiple algorithms tagged union find on leetcode.com. Here is the image.

Look for challenging activities

March 26, 2019

Introduction

It is my idea to make today so special, I like to from 11:00 PM to 12:00, just after 45 minutes mock interview on interviewing.io. I like to make this hour special.

Searching the ideas

I like to try to find some ideas how to improve my coding skills and also problem solving skills.

Find 20 hard level algorithms to work on

March 26, 2019

Introduction

It is not easy to find time to write code every day. Specially in normal business hour. How do I manage myself better and then I can have passion to code every day.

One hard algorithm a day

It is a good idea to work on one hard algorithm a day. I should try to solve all Leetcode weekly contest hard level algorithms, and then choose to study top 10 player and their solutions.

I took long break from Nov. 2018 to March 2019. I like to go back to old routine, work on algorithm problem solving every day.

Learn from the best

It is one of Amazon leadership principle. Hire the best.

To work on algorithm problem solving, I should choose best players and learn from their solution through weekly contest.

How to read my Leetcode profile?

March 24, 2019

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. As a matter of fact, Amazon Vancouver finds candidates from China, Latin America since they search talents globally. I stayed in USA from 1996 to 2010, I stayed in Canada from 2010 to 2019. I also have to learn how to push myself by working with talents all over the world. Today I like to work on a short research how to read my Leetcode profile?

My Leetcode profile

Here is my leetcode profile on March 24, 2019.

I like to define the time line 5 spots:

May 2018 - Time line 1,
July 2018 - Time line 2
August 2018 - Time line 3
November 2018 - Time line 4
March 2019 - Time line 5

I like to write a few things for each time line, how I advance myself to next level, change target, analyze my own career and thinking process, Amazon leadership principle etc.

May 2018 - Time line 1

I finally decided to take risk and take one week vacation to SJTU 30 years reunion in Shanghai. I booked the flight and in the airport I got a message from LinkedIn.com from one Amazon recruiter.

Here is the blog. I had to book a phone screen after the vacation. I did book a phone screen in May and I passed the phone screen. I have two weeks to prepare an onsite in June in the city of Seattle. I hired a coach from Tsinghua university, a young graduate student met on pramp.com in January 2018. He solved over 500 algorithms, his ranking is around 5000.

I was told to work on easy level algorithms on leetcode.com. But I believe that I should learn how to solve hard level algorithms only. Coach told me a few times, work on easy level algorithms. I did not have time to work on easy level algorithms, two weeks preparation, full time job.

So the fact is that I only solved 120 algorithms from January 2015 to May 2018. And also I did not organize, write discussion panel or document the practice very well. So there is a lot of blank before May 2018.

June 2018 - Time line 2

After I went to Amazon onsite, I had a facebook phone screen set up before August 1. I continued to work on Leetcode easy level algorithms.

November 2018 - Time line 3

I have to wait another two years before I can apply Amazon. I decided to work on personal finance research. I like to do some research to solve real problems in my life. It is the first time I chose to work on personal finance research, it is painful experience since I reveal the real life of my personal finance.

March 2019 - Time line 4

I worked hundreds of hours on personal finance in holiday one week break last week of December 2018. I chose to continue to study personal finance. I only play Leetcode weekly contest.

Do not waste!

March 24, 2019

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. I am also a Christian, I like to be a good role model to other people. But I find out that I make huge mistakes and ignore the consequence of my actions.

Clothes

I just did calculate based on citi credit card, I spent over $6,000 us dollars from 1999 to 2001 over $6,000 us dollars on clothes. What are those clothes? Those are top brand clothes and bags. I paid my mom a condo in 2001 using $6,000 dollars, now it worth over $100,000 dollars.

I did go back in 2014 and threw away into community garbage can. It is not right things to do. I argued to myself to give more space to the renters. There is a cost to bring them back to Canada; There is cost for me to sell them one by one online or donation etc.

$40,000 credit card expense

I spent $40,000 us dollars on my citi credit card from 1999 to 2001. I bought a lot of stuff and put into a two bedroom condo.

I do not set up inventory check for those items. I do not track each item expenses, invoice, picture, usage. I just gave away, or throw away. I did analyze those cost this January 2019 finally based on citi bank credit card. It is not correct behavior.

I should think about and analyze, and make things better.

I bought extra video camera, I only played a few times. I just left inside condo. I should bring those item to Canada, I can use them record video and post some algorithm and personal finance video on youtube.com.

I did a case study on clothing sofa purchased with my mom together back in 2000.

I got a friend on Leetcode.com

March 24, 2019

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. I play Leetcode weekly contest, and also I write for weekly contest discussion as well. I played over 35 contests, and then I found out that I got a friend.

Who is this anonymous friend?

I need to get involved into the community to leetcode discuss. It is not easy to work with day in and day out. I know that my time is limited resource, I write things too quick and I constantly make changes. For example, I got down votes multiple times, so I take the approach. I  just delete the post, and think about problems shown in the post, and then I write one to make it better.

Now I have a friend who also writes very well. We give each other upvotes to build a better community around our circles.

Here is one of discussion links. Here is Leetcode profile. He is moving towards ranking 10,000, and I also like to push myself hard to move into ranking before 10,000.

He wrote a popular post with 14 upvotes. He got 8 comments. His ranking is 12589.

Let us record my statistics here. I will check update after three months.

I got upvotes from the friend, and also the comment from him only. But his circle has a lot more good players.

Weekly contest progress report

March 21, 2019

Introduction

It is my favorite weekly contest on Leetcode.com. I also learn a few things after 24 contests since last September. I like to write down a progress report to show my progress.

Progress report

Last week I played weekly contest 128. This is the first time I experienced something new. I chose to study those top ranking 195 players and their solution to solve Leetcode 1015 hard level algorithm.

It is hard for me to learn so many ideas to solve the problem in a few hours. But after two days study, I started to break through and learn how to solve the algorithm from top five players first.

Top ranking 15 players uses less than 30 minutes to solve all four algorithms. The fact just reminds me to stay humble and continue to push myself to learn.

I also review top player's code and see what I should learn from those top performers in the world.

6 habits of successful investors

Here is the link.

Consumer vs. Investor Mindset

Here is the link.

The difference is the same between the rich & poor. The rich think long-term and the poor think about the next day. Hence, living paycheck to paycheck.

When you are thinking long-term the first realization is this asset (iPhone) will not provide a monetary Return On Investment (ROI). Preferably the next thought that races in are the money spent on the iPhone could be better invested elsewhere.

Hopefully, you are starting to see the bigger picture on the differences of a consumer & investor thought process. When you adopt the investor mindset you literally start analyzing every extra purchase. Not just with the new iPhone but other consumer products as well. Consider the larger purchases you will have later in life such as a vehicle or home. I have seen people purchase past beyond their means which limits your investing power by thousands of dollars in a lifetime.
