2022 KIA SPORTAGE SAFETY RATINGS

Sure, the Kia Sportage is among our most stylish models. A fresh exterior, numerous driver-assist technologies, and available All-Wheel Drive make it competitive in its class. What about the 2022 Kia Sportage safety ratings, though?

Easton, Allentown, and Quakertown, PA, shoppers can expect stratospheric safety ratings from the Sportage—and that’s no hyperbole. See how this Kia SUV earned some of the best ratings in the game with our experts at Brown-Daub Kia!

KIA SPORTAGE NHTSA SAFETY RATING

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs crash tests annually on a variety of models. Three parts comprise their crash-testing process: frontal crash, side crash, and rollover tests.

Individual scores are then compiled into an overall safety score for the model in question. For 2022, the Kia Sportage earned a 5-Star Overall Safety Rating from the NHTSA. Here’s how it fared in the individual tests:

  • Frontal Crash: 4 Stars
  • Side Crash: 5 Stars
  • Rollover: 4 Stars

With a perfect score on the side crash test, the Sportage is engineered to help keep you safe in some of the most common accidents.

KIA SPORTAGE IIHS SAFETY RATING

Another organization that carries out crash testing is the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). They put models through six “crashworthiness” tests, as well as crash avoidance and mitigation testing, finishing with a look at child seat anchors.

Although 2022 data is not yet available, the 2021 Kia Sportage fared extremely well on testing, emerging as a 2021 TOP SAFETY PICK for the IIHS. With a perfect score of “Good” in all six crashworthiness tests, the honor was hardly unexpected! The six tests included:

  • Small overlap front: driver-side (Good)
  • Small overlap front: passenger-side (Good)
  • Moderate overlap front (Good)
  • Side (Good)
  • Roof strength (Good)
  • Head restraints & seats (Good)

Meanwhile, available LED projector headlights (found on the SX Turbo trim level) earned an “Acceptable” rating from the IIHS. Although they are not curve adaptive, they do feature High Beam Assist to help you see farther up the road.

DRIVE SMART WITH KIA DRIVE WISE

Engineered to help keep you safe in the event of an accident, the Kia Sportage has another ace up its sleeve. It’s one we haven’t yet discussed: accident prevention.

Obviously, it’s better to prevent a collision than simply mitigate it, and Kia Drive Wise helps make that possible. This driver-assist suite comes standard—but it has even more features available for higher trim levels.

It relies on a system of sensors and cameras to help keep you safe in the Sportage. Standard and available features include:

  • Forward Collision Avoidance Assist w/ Pedestrian Detection
  • Lane Keeping Assist and Lane Departure Warning
  • Driver Attention Warning
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warning
  • Blind-Spot Collision Warning
