It is part of mental training. I like to adopt some good thoughts to lead myself in problem solving. One statement I like to say is that "I think I have better idea than this one". I like to push myself to come out optimal solution, even less space, sometimes it means a quick and easy solution to write as well.
I wrote C# code for one algorithm this Friday. I was so surprised to write the code and it took me less than 30 minute. The life as a software programmer is so interesting journey.
I will write down more content to share on this topic. Stay tuned.

Fast forward to today and Goldman has merely two equity traders left.

I used to complain the issue with my knee, I used to talk to my roommate Emma back in 2017. I should work on fitness, and keep my weight around 176 lb instead of 186 lb.

It is my sick day. I decided to write a blog to document my experience. Two days ago I cleaned my room, I hit the suitcase wheel in my room and my left smallest toe got swollen. Today I went to emergency room in Burnaby hospital after X-ray.
This Monday I hurted my left toe smallest one, after a few hours, I took a nap, and then at 7:00 pm, I went out to play tennis, I felt that the toe was painful and swollen.
Tuesday I went to work, after work, I went to walk-in clinic, and then I was told to take X-ray; if there is dislocated bone, after X-ray, I should go to emergency room, some one knows how to correct it.
Wednesday morning I went to X-ray, after x- ray, and I was told to take CD with me, and then I should go to emergency room to get help.
This is the first time I went to Burnaby hospital emergency room as a walk-in. I learned a few things by the visit.
I just could not believe that Dr. yap is a quick-problem solver, he pulled out my toe, and I heard the pop sound of bone came out socket. I was told to do X-ray after his work. The nurse did buddy tape my smallest toe. I need to body tape my smallest toe with fourth one, four days.
I like to learn more about Dr. Yap.

I heard the conversation in emergency room about my neighbor 92 years old fell, and asked her neighbor to help her to hospital, and in X-ray I saw 92 years old lady. It is a totally different person compared to my neighbor, a retired physician, 92 years old Chinese, UBC graduate. Canada is a totally different country compared to China, USA.
I also like to take a look linkedin profile of physician Olga Cyganik. She was the doctor I visited, and she advised me to do X-ray first, and what to do next.

Designing Data Intensive Applications by Martin Kleppmann - Book review from a Google manager

It is a challenging job to read the book, I already spent over 10 hours to read the book; I start to learn different ways to read the book. One of ideas is to read the book first, and then find some video on youtube.com and spend one hour to learn more from presentation. I just could not believe that the book can be a very good textbook as well.
I like to share the book review from a Google manager. I just came cross his post this afternoon. It is so interesting to come cross the post.

This book is helping me to build connections between various patches of knowledge I had about distributed applications, approaches and latest trends in the way I never thought was possible. It's almost like, without this book I had the pieces scattered all over the place, most of them missing, now I have an index I can re-read and reference. For algorithms I already had "The Algorithm Design Manual" by Steven S. Skiena, and now this book is my manual for system design."
Designing Data Intensive Applications" gives concise vocabulary to talk about storage and retrieval models, encoding formats, replication and sharding. It connects the world of traditional relational databases, ACID and leader-follower replication to the modern approaches of non-relational and leaderless, provides a language to reason about tradeoffs way beyond "the unhelpful CAP theorem", as it calls it.
Overall I know that if I manage to remember the key concepts covering at least a third of the material in this book, I'll save myself and others countless hours at design discussions.

It is my 20 minutes research. I like to compare me with those people with five years in Microsoft as senior developer or SDE II, how they compete the next job, which maybe is a position in Facebook or Google or high title in Microsoft.
I still remembered that in January 2015, I asked for 45 minutes onsite interview with Facebook in the city of Vancouver, and then I started to write a coding blog call juliacodingblog.com. I was so shy and so close, it is so hard for me to write down my thoughts and demonstrate good will to share and enjoy the hard working of writing.
Three friends I met last three years.
One was senior engineer in Microsoft and he joined Facebook recently.
One is PH.D. with 5 years in Microsoft, not senior yet, working on Google interview.
One is senior engineer in Microsoft, and practice interview all the time.
My question is this:
How to manage the career?
A person chose to finish 800 Leetcode algorithms, and he could show me the solution in less than 20 minutes to solve a hard level algorithm. He failed me using long common subsequence, we did one mock interview together. I finished 420 algorithms on Leetcode.com. I do think that it is talent to solve over 800 algorithms, in other words, he can solve problems much more quickly since he knows how to solve them, or it takes less time for him to solve, or he has very good foundation and know how to solve problems.
I do think that a person who can get computer science Ph.D., and also five year experience in Microsoft, he will definitely have challenge time to determine what is next step. He chose to solve 800 algorithms and well-prepared for next job.
He also showed me how to solve the algorithm using binary search for the algorithm longest common subsequence.

S & P Index 500 one month study

It is my personal finance research. I learn that emotion is the biggest enemy of investment. I like to do a case study of S & P Index 500.
Here is one month chart.
I purchased ETF and built my portfolio 3 month ago, S & P Index is around 2800. Last 30 days three times my profit went down less than $100 dollars except dividend.

My understanding is that I should not play like a day trader. But those fluctuations are so interesting for me to watch my portfolio. If I play with the market, then I may get addicted and affect my daily work and life.

I booked the meeting Sunday and met all my friends working in Silicon Valley area. They are very experienced managers. One of them coached me how to do product design for Facebook onsite. She told me that she applied so many jobs in Hong Kong, and she likes to write top down or bottom up, draw a lot of diagrams.

Swimming and thinking about how to prepare for interviews.
I came out ideas to write down outline of system design:

I gave up ideas to review 170 algorithms and tried to memorize all kinds of ideas to solve those algorithms.
I understood that it is time for me to be tested how good I did my practice last two years.
On August 19, I walked 200 meters to my friend and project manager Dr. Jin. We talked about work and life in Silicon Valley one hour. I understood that it is so challenging for me to compete a position from Facebook.
I understood that I am a underdog as an interviewee. But I like to learn something from my friend since she works as a project manager last 10 years and she just started a new job as a project manager as well.
Education is so important for both of us. She worked on Ph.D. and she got in less than five years. I did try to get it, but I did not make it happen from 2001 to 2010.
I spent three hours to study from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM on April 19, 2019. I decided to go out to visit Stanford university campus and enjoyed my trip of California.
Those three algorithms I reviewed another tree algorithm called serialization of tree, copy of tree.

It is the second visit to Stanford university campus. My first campus visit is twenty years ago, in 1999. I visited second time on Feb. 19, 2019, the day before my onsite interview. It is less than three hour road trip.
