Here are Thursday’s best-performing stocks as the Dow Jones Industrial Average produces a three-day gain of 21%

Here is the article.

U.S. stocks posted another big gain Thursday, despite a depressing unemployment report, as investors expected the House of Representatives to pass the $2 trillion coronavirus stimulus bill after the Senate did the same.
• The Dow Jones Industrial Average US:DJIA soared 1,352 points (or 6.4%) to close at 22,552.17. That made for three straight sessions of increases, for a gain of 21.3% since the Dow closed at 18,591.93 on Monday. So there’s a new bull market for the Dow, with a run of more than 20%. Then again, the Dow is down 23.7% from its record closing high Feb. 12. (All prices in this article exclude dividends.)

7 Biggest Mistakes Investors Make - You Fail to Rebalance Your Portfolio Regularly

Here is the article.

Every investor is subject to the whims of the market. Here's one way to profit from the inevitable ups and downs. Let's say your portfolio is made up of mutual funds. At the end of each year—better yet, every quarter—consider how much you have in each fund. Then target new money to the funds that have done poorly. Many retirement plans offer automatic rebalancing, so you don’t have to worry about it. Rebalancing keeps your portfolio diversified by preventing your wealth from becoming concentrated in a small number of investments.
This disciplined approach to investing helps ensure that you're buying lower and selling higher, which certainly beats the buy-high-sell-low trap that snares many investors. "Rebalancing takes guts—it's hard to reward losers—but it works," says Kiplinger.com columnist Steven Goldberg.

It is most important to stay on the course. Do not give in fear. No matter how hard it is, I always can survive to live a frugal life.

7 Biggest Mistakes Investors Make - You Have Too Much of Your Portfolio In One Asset

Here is the article.

There's no such thing as the perfect investment. Stocks carry risks. Funds that bundle stocks can lessen the risk, cushioning sharp downturns but muting spikes as well. And bonds can offset stock losses in the short term, but over long periods, bond returns trail the returns of the stock market.
Having the right mix is especially important to retirees, who should have an investment horizon long enough to weather this storm. Shifting too much money to bonds or under the mattress is no strategy. You should stay diversified, no matter how scary the market gets. T. Rowe Price recommends new retirees keep 40%-60% of their assets in stocks because they hold up to inflation better than bonds and cash. Even 90-year-olds should keep at least 20% of their assets in stocks.

7 Biggest Mistakes Investors Make - You quit buying - 2 of 7

Here is the article.

Buying stocks in bear markets may be the hardest thing for most investors to do because it is so counterintuitive. But if you have cash, you can score some real bargains that others who are fully invested cannot. Snapping up quality stocks you know are being dragged down in the froth of a downturn can unlock future wealth. Make a list of investments that you’d like to own and the prices you’re willing to pay, says Bryan Koslow, a registered investment adviser for New Jersey-based Clarus Financial. When the market sells off and a stock on your list falls to the right price, bingo. “Your list will help you stay disciplined,” says Koslow.

7 Biggest Mistakes Investors Make - panic-sell - 1 of 7

Here is the article.

Don’t let a summer of low market volatility lull you into complacency. Here are the seven biggest mistakes investors make. Avoid these costly missteps and chances are you can profit handsomely for years to come, even if you are retired or approaching retirement.

You Panic-Sell

Emotion is your worst enemy. Remember, all bull and bear markets have one thing in common—they always come to an end. Some recent history: The Dow lost a frightening 53% of its value in the 2008-2009 meltdown. But within a four-year period, the Dow regained it all, then rose an additional 28%, from a low of 6,507 to a then-high of 18,200 on February 24, 2015. Now the Dow is back above 18,000 again. Patient investors were big winners in the run-up.
So keep your eye on your long-term plan. “If you aren’t willing to own a stock for 10 years, don’t even think of owning it for 10 minutes,” as Warren Buffett once put it.

Comparison with VBAL.To performance

March 26 2020

Introduction

It is my plan to set up a vanguard VBAL.TO ETF fund in my portfolio, so I can have to compare my own portfolio with bonds 50% and equities 50% to professional vanguard VBAL.To. Based on my data, VBAL.TO is 6% loss invested on May 2019, and my portfolio $60,000 Canadian dollars including this Feb. 6 2020 SPX highest 3300 $13,000 invest in equities also has similar result, 8% loss.

More detail

I like to provide detail as well.

Quick summary

I purchased near $5000 VBAL.TO in May 2019, and my market change on the asset is (7%); I also managed $60,000 dollars by myself to keep 50% bond, 50% equities, the market change is around *8%).

If I work hard on those days in big market swing days, then I should have sold all my VAB.TO at price $28.00 dollars, and then $2000 dollars realization of profit is possible. My performance will be much better compared to VBAL.TO.

Considering that if I am a good Christian with faith, I should spend more time on coronavirus back in February, 2020. I should avoid to purchase more equity, and sell all assets to stay sideline to avoid bear market crash.

Victoria TFSA portfolio - March 26, 2020

March 26, 2020

Introduction

It takes time for me to learn better about market swing, and also I like to get used to market swing so that I understand how to be an investor, not a speculator. I should learn how business works, like Canada airline, I spend over 10 hours to study about airline industry and Coronavirus impact.

Case study

I should work on my TFSA portfolio first. It is so important for me to learn how to invest, specially go through bear market.

Actionable Items

I bought near $5000 dollar VBAL.TO ETF, so I can compare my own portfolio using bond 50% and stock 50% to VBAL. Based on March 26, 2020's data, my loss is 8% compared to VBAL 7%.

I purchased VBAL ETF in May 2019, but my own portfolio included my purchase on Feb. 6, 2020 highest point SPX 3300 $13,000 equity purchase as well.

Good job! well done! I did miss the opportunity to sell all of shares VAB.TO when price was $28.00 dollars on March 18, and I also missed a few other opportunities as well.

5 Stocks Billionaires Are Buying Right Now!

Here is the link.

During a recession, the general consensus among investors is Sell Sell Sell! If there is one thing I have learned from years in the stock market, it is that the average investor out there does the wrong thing. You see, money is made in the stock market by buying low and selling high. However, your average investor right now is selling low, evidence by the stock market crash. People are in a mad dash for cash because of uncertainty. So we know what the average investor out there is doing right now, but what about the billionaires? Billionaires often invest through hedge funds, a small partnership of high net worth investors. These hedge funds are only required to disclose their holdings on a quarterly basis through a form 13-F. That being said, a few billionaires have come out and made their latest trades public. Here’s what billionaires are buying!

Leetcode 33: search in rotated sorted array

March 26, 2020

Introduction

It is the first time I tried to write the code while the interviewee worked on his coding. I wrote a solution to search in rotated sorted array. I like my experience as an interviewer, and also I try to master the algorithm through being a responsible interviewer.

My solution and sharing

Here is my discussion post.

March 25, 2020
It is the algorithm I like to learn from mock interviews as an interviewer. I also wrote the code while I interviewed the interviewee using the algorithm.
Case study
How to develop a working solution to solve the problem? The analytics skills are very important, as an interviewer, I like to judge if the interviewee can analyze the binary search algorithm using his/ her own words.
It is trivial to search a target value in sorted array. But if the sorted array is rotated, then it is more challenge but it can be still solved using modified binary search.
Let me work on two test cases through failed test cases written by the interviewee on March 26, 2020. Here is the blog with a case study of mock interview.
case study 1:
{4,5,6,7,0,1,2}, 6
In order to find value 6, we have to consider how to apply modified binary search.
Middle index position is 3, value is 7. So left half is [0,3), and right half is (3, 6].
The left half's two edge node's value is 4 and 7, and since 4 < 7, it is in ascending order, 6 is in the range of [4,7). So binary search every step is to get rid of half of numbers, so the search can be narrowed down to left half.
case study 2:
{4,5,6,7,8,1,2,3}, 8
In order to to find value 8, the middle index value is 3, middle value is 7, left half is [0, 3), both end values 4 and 7 are less than 7, since left half is in ascending order, 7 cannot be in left half.
Argument
The argument should be reviewed and be proved correct first before the interviewee writes his code.
My argument is if the range is in ascending order, then the target can be determined if it is in the range or not. The condition is target >= startValue && target <= endValue, [startValue, endValue] are two values of the range.
But one of the interviewee's argument is that the range with [startValue, endValue], startValue > target, endValue > target, then target is not in the range. It is not correct!
Here are highlights for me to work on online judge to pass all test cases:
  1. Declare an explanation variable firstHalfAscending, edge case left half only has one node;
  2. If first half is in ascending order, and also target is in the range, then remove right half, otherwise reove left half;
  3. My argument is at least one half is in ascending order
  4. If step 2 is not true, then right half should be in ascending order, copy and paste the if/ else part, change range from [start, middle) to (middle, end].
  5. In order to expedite the coding, also bug-free, I need to test the code by myself instead relying on leetcode online judge.
public class Solution {
    public int Search(int[] numbers, int target) {
        if(numbers == null || numbers.Length == 0)
            return -1;

        var length = numbers.Length;
        int start = 0;
        int end = length - 1;
        while(start <= end)
        {
            var middle = start + (end - start)/2 ;
            var middleValue = numbers[middle];

            if(middleValue == target)
            {
                return middle;
            }

            var firstHalfAscending = middleValue >= numbers[start];
            if(firstHalfAscending)
            {   // in range
                if(target >= numbers[start] && target < middleValue)
                {
                    // remove right half
                    end = middle - 1;
                }
                else
                {
                    start = middle + 1;
                }
            }
            else
            {
                // in range
                if(target > middleValue && target <= numbers[end])
                {
                    // remove left half
                    start = middle + 1;
                }
                else
                {
                    end = middle - 1;
                }
            }
        }

        return -1;
    }

Case study: Search in rotated sorted array

March 25, 2020

Introduction

It is important for me to learn from interviewees through mock interview on interviewing.io. I like to work on  a short case study on this interview 10:00 PM.

Case study

Here is the code after I reviewed. The code still failed the last test case, and then I pointed out that the design has flaw, the two edge node of a range cannot determine if the target is the range, only if the range is in ascending order.

WestJet laying off 6,900 workers amid worsening COVID-19 crisis

Here is the article.

Last week, the airline asked employees throughout the organization to opt for one of several options, including unpaid leave of absence, early retirement, voluntary resignation, reduced work week or reduced pay.

In a message to its members Tuesday, CUPE, the union representing WestJet cabin crew, said 1,982 of its members selected a voluntary option, so for the month of April at least, there were 298 involuntary layoffs among CUPE members.

Up to 600 Air Canada pilots will also go on unpaid leave in the coming months due to the fallout from the virus, their union said Tuesday.

WestJet and other airlines around the world have seen their revenues dry up as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has led to border closures, cancelled flights and a near-complete collapse in leisure travel demand.

WestJet cuts 6,900 staff; Air Canada to furlough up to 600 pilots as coronavirus slashes flights

Here is the article written on March 24, 2020.

Canada’s privately held WestJet Airlines said on Tuesday that 6,900 employees would leave the company, with 90 per cent departing voluntarily. The country’s second-largest carrier had about 14,000 employees before the announcement.

Air Canada reached the agreement as its April schedule was reduced by 80 per cent and the carrier has suspended its leisure service Rouge, the union letter said.

Air Canada shares were up about 20 per cent in afternoon trade, but still down more than 60 per cent this year.

The Air Canada Pilots Association, which represents 4,400 members, said in a statement on Tuesday that the agreement would reduce pay across the group, simplify contract language to allow pilots to retire earlier and provide “for orderly redundancies” up to a maximum of 600 positions in the coming months.

Stock Market Crash 2020: Your Chance to Make Millions

Here is the article written in March 14, 2020.

The stocks of Disney, Starbucks, and Restaurant Brands, respectively, have fallen by 37%, 31%, and 41% from their 2019 highs. They are getting increasingly attractive as long-term investments.

Currently, analysts predict Air Canada’s adjusted earnings will decline about 26% year over year. However, the coronavirus situation is dynamic, and estimates can change for better or worse.

At about $24 per share at writing, Air Canada stock trades at roughly 9.6 times its forward earnings, while its normal price-to-earnings ratio (P/E) is about seven, which represents a price target of $17.50.
In 2009, during the last recession and market crash, Air Canada stock fell to below $1 per share and almost went bankrupt. Investors who plunged in and held on until 2018 would have landed on a 27-bagger, transforming $10,000 into $270,000.

Is Air Canada (TSX:AC) Headed for Bankruptcy?

Here is the article.

At the end of Q4, Air Canada had almost $6 billion in cash, as well as undrawn credit lines of $7.4 billion. Net debt (debt minus cash) was just 78% of 2019 EBITDA, while free cash flows for the year came in at $2 billion, up from $1.3 billion the year prior. In terms of its pension, Air Canada was in a surplus position of $2.5 billion as of January 1, 2019, though we can expect this to decrease once it gets revalued later this year owing to lower interest rates.

Thirteen Companies Drown On Debt In Coronavirus Crash

Here is the link.

Thirteen companies in the S&P 500, including Boeing (BA), Ford (F) and National Oilwell Varco (NOV) carry eight times or much more in total debt versus their annual adjusted cashflow, according to an Investor's Business Daily analysis of data from S&P Global Market Intelligence and MarketSmith. Cashflow in this case is earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) the past twelve months.
That's more than double the 3.2 times of debt to cashflow, on average, in the S&P 500, excluding financial firms. Debt to cashflow of five or more is considered to be high. That means it would take five years to repay debt. It might also be difficult to borrow more.
Such debt buildup has worried investors for months. The coronavirus bear market puts the fear on top of mind. And it's yet another reason savvy traders know to get out of the market and stay out for now.

Tepper also said he’s buying some health-care stocks. “Things look really interesting for the long term.” To be sure, Tepper added that the broader market could fall another 10% to 15% as investors grapple with the coronavirus pandemic and its economic blow. “If you’re levered, I wouldn’t be levered,” Tepper said. “The market could go down more. On the other hand, we could be near a bottom once they [Congress] get this package done.” Tepper’s comments come as Wall Street awaited a fiscal stimulus plan from U.S. lawmakers. A bill aimed at stimulating the U.S. economy amid the outbreak failed to clear a procedural hurdle in the Senate on Sunday. However, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said Monday that an agreement was close. The major averages trimmed some of Monday’s declines after Schumer’s comments. Still, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 were off more than 3%. Both averages were also more than 30% below record highs set just last month. More than 350,000 coronavirus cases have been confirmed worldwide, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. In the U.S. alone, more than 35,000 people have been infected while over 59,000 cases have been confirmed in Italy. Tepper said that — for stocks to reach a bottom — he needs to see the number of new cases in Italy “peaking or flattening” in the next few days. He also said “it would be interesting” if cases in New York City peaked in the next few weeks. “I’d like to see the ventilators rolling out of the assembly lines, I’d like to see the masks being given ... You have to have a plan,” he said. Tepper added. “The key is to get out of this lockdown and into a distancing mode.”
