NEW YORK, Nov 8 (Reuters) - The S&P 500 briefly surpassed the 6,000 mark and closed with its biggest weekly percentage gain in a year, as Donald Trump's election victory and a possible Republican Party sweep in Congress fueled expectations for favorable business policies.

Also supporting stocks this week was a widely expected interest rate cut of 25 basis points by the Federal Reserve on Thursday.

The S&P 500 and the Dow Industrials (.DJI), opens new tab registered their best weekly percentage jump since early November 2023, while the Nasdaq (.IXIC), opens new tab notched its best week in two months and second-best week of 2024.

Investors were also monitoring for a likely "Red Sweep" as Republicans were set to keep their narrow lead in the House of Representatives after winning control of the Senate. That would make it easier for Trump to enact his legislative plans.

Expectations for lower corporate taxes and deregulation lifted the Nasdaq to record closing highs for three straight sessions. The S&P secured its 50th record close of the year.

"It is a psychologically important number but with all the developments this week, I don't think it's terribly important if we close at 6,005 or if we close at 5,995. The market is way up this week," said Mike Dickson, head of research and quantitative strategies at Horizon Investments in Charlotte, North Carolina.

"There's been so many things, so much good news for the market this week as evidenced by the prices. All of that far outweighs whether or not we're on the right or left hand side of that 6,000 number when the close happens."

I just added one more indicator called VWAP

Volume-Weighted Average Price (VWAP): Definition and Calculation

The volume-weighted average price (VWAP) is a technical analysis indicator used on intraday charts that resets at the start of every new trading session. It's the average price a security has traded at throughout the day, based on both volume and price.

VWAP is important because it provides traders with insight into both the price trend and value of a security.

Key Takeaways

  • The volume-weighted average price (VWAP) appears as a single line on intraday charts.
  • It looks similar to a moving average line, but is smoother.
  • VWAP represents a view of price action throughout a single day's trading session.
  • Retail and professional traders may use the VWAP to help them determine intraday price trends.
  • VWAP is a trading benchmark that typically is most useful to short-term traders.

How to Calculate VWAP

By adding the VWAP indicator to a streaming chart, the calculation will be made automatically. However, to calculate the VWAP yourself, follow the steps below.

Assume a five-minute chart. The calculation is the same regardless of what intraday time frame is used.

  1. Find the average price the stock traded at over the first five-minute period of the day. To do this, add the high, low, and close, then divide by three. Multiply this by the volume for that period. Record the result in a spreadsheet, under column PV (price, volume).
  2. Divide PV by the volume for that period. This will produce the VWAP.
  3. To maintain the VWAP throughout the day, continue to add the PV value from each period to the prior values. Divide this total by the total volume up to that point.

To make Step 3 easier in a spreadsheet, create columns for cumulative PV and cumulative volume and apply the formula to these figures.

How Is VWAP Used?

VWAP is used in different ways by traders. Traders may use it as a trend confirmation tool and build trading rules around it. For instance, they may consider stocks with prices below VWAP as undervalued and those with prices above it as overvalued. If prices below VWAP move above it, traders may go long on the stock. If prices above VWAP move below it, they may sell their positions or initiate short positions.

Institutional buyers (including mutual funds) use VWAP to help move into or out of stocks with as small of a market impact as possible. Therefore, when they can, institutions will try to buy below the VWAP or sell above it. This way their actions push the price back toward the average, instead of away from it.

Understanding the Volume-Weighted Average Price (VWAP)

VWAP is calculated by totaling the dollars traded for every transaction (price multiplied by the volume) and then dividing by the total shares traded.

Formula

The formula for VWAP is:

VWAP =Cumulative Typical Price × VolumeCumulative Volumewhere:Typical Price=High price+low price+closing price/3Cumulative=Total trades since the trading session opened

From every angle: Dr. Von Nguyen brings rare background to quest for high-value specialty care

October 1, 2024

Von Nguyen brings a background in value-based payment models, artificial intelligence and health plan operations to the challenges of high-value specialty care.

Dr. Von Nguyen has spent his career paving the way for better outcomes and affordability in healthcare. With a background that includes designing federal value-based payment programs in several specialties, guiding quality and value efforts at a Blues plan, and helping to shape population health solutions at Google, he recently brought his unique experiences and skills to Evolent as our new chief clinical officer. In this role, he will focus on scaling operations and integrating artificial intelligence (AI) to improve outcomes in specialty care.

Dr. Nguyen shared his perspective on multiple topics, including AI's role in healthcare, how he approaches provider abrasion, and why he says high-value specialty care is poised for growth.

Why did you decide to pursue a career in medicine and make the move from practicing physician to medical executive?

I know this sounds cliche but watching M*A*S*H as a kid inspired me. I grew up in a low-income family and didn't have any professional role models, but the characters in the show suggested that life as a doctor could be both fun and meaningful.

I've worked at clinics in underserved communities and as a volunteer for Doctors Without Borders. While direct patient care brings me great joy, I quickly learned that I could have more impact leading programs at the population health level.

You've worn many hats in your career. What is the perspective you have gained through the years about the pursuit of value and better health outcomes?

At the end of the day, whether you're a provider, a health plan or the government, we all want to serve people and communities. We all want to ensure people have the right care, at the right time, and at the right place that makes the most sense for them. That was always my goal regardless of the role I held.

What excites you most about your new role at Evolent?

The opportunity to leverage all the skills I’ve acquired throughout my career to improve the health of the members we serve and also to advance value-based care. For 2025, experts are predicting upwards of an 8% increase in healthcare costs. As healthcare continues to increase faster than the rate of inflation, the environment isn't sustainable. There's been a lot of innovation with ACOs and primary care, but less so in specialty care. Now it's time. Evolent is on the cutting edge of innovation, and we have an opportunity to transform healthcare.

What are some of the key projects you'll be focused on?

One of the most interesting areas I’m working on is artificial intelligence (AI). When I was at Google, I was part of a research team using large language models to build core capabilities for healthcare. These models are great with general conversations but require additional investment to be useful in specific applications. So we need to tune and train these models to understand the complexities of healthcare.

Despite so much innovation and technology, healthcare still lags behind other industries, and so many processes are still manual. I think the industry single-handedly keeps the fax industry alive! AI can decrease the administrative burden on providers and staff and free them up to use their years of training and practice at the top of their licenses. AI can allow them to spend more time delivering care, building trusted relationships with patients, and ultimately improving quality and outcomes.

AI in healthcare is still in its infancy. What do you think it will look like when it's "grown-up"?

Some people don't realize how pervasive and second nature AI will become. But we shouldn't fear the "Terminator" scenario or think that it will take over all our jobs.

Healthcare is a team sport, and we should look at AI as another member of the team. We'll need to define roles and responsibilities and assign tasks to AI that it can do well. Tasks that it doesn't do well should stay in human hands. AI should never replace human judgment because it doesn't have that capacity, nor would we want it to.

What are some of the best use cases for AI in specialty care management?

AI is really good at recognizing patterns that humans can't see. If you have enough data, it can help you understand risk and intervene. For example, we can use AI to predict if a patient is likely to be hospitalized.

AI is also useful for picking up needles in a haystack. If you're a clinical reviewer who typically has to sift through pages upon pages of documentation, AI can quickly find those key pieces of information you need for a medical necessity determination. The technology can also capture an idea, rather than just finding specific words, and summarize it based on all the notes in a meaningful way.

Provider abrasion is a stubborn challenge. How can we best minimize abrasion while still delivering value?

Above all else, we must prioritize trust and remember that providers, health plans and Evolent are all trying to make the right decisions for patients. Trusted relationships, however, don't happen overnight but through engagement over time. That's the core of what we do at Evolent — building trust and engagement with providers to drive value for patients and our customers.

Technology also has a large role. Through AI, we can make the prior authorization process more transparent, issue more auto-authorizations, and reduce paperwork and administrative burden.

ACOs and other primary care VBC models have been around for years. Where do you think we are with value-based specialty care?

All our early successes, such as the Medicare Shared Savings Program, have been very important in helping us understand what's working and what’s not. We're at that inflection point where we can think about specialty models in a way we haven't before and impact the cost of care in complex areas like oncology, cardiology and musculoskeletal care. We're ready to scale these models to make them more accessible to more patients.

When you were at CMS, you worked on various specialty-focused alternative payment models. What did you learn from that experience?

I worked on Bundled Payments for Care Improvement, the Oncology Care Model and the Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement Model, and I learned that they're just as complicated as ACOs.

Primary care and specialty models use the same general principles to get positive outcomes. For example, we have to think about how providers participate in risk sharing. Also, data is critical to help inform decision-making because, I would argue, providers in general don't have good information on costs and utilization. Yet if you provide them with data, they will plan ahead to ensure patients get the right care and minimize unnecessary services.

When you're not working, what do you do for fun?

I recently have been spending a lot of time with carpentry. I just finished a giant Murphy bed and next up is a bookcase for one of my daughters. She insists on reading paperback books and we're running out of space — it's a good problem to have!

 Here is the article.

Why Goodyear Tire & Rubber Stock Jumped This Week

By Demitri Kalogeropoulos – Nov 7, 2024 at 4:02PM

Key Points

Goodyear is in a restructuring process aimed at cutting costs and reducing debt.

The stock might stay under pressure until tire sales volumes rebound.

Motley Fool Issues Rare “All In” Buy Alert

Management sees more room to cut costs in 2024.

Goodyear Tire & Rubber (GT 3.36%) investors had a stellar week following the tire giant's positive third-quarter earnings report. Shares jumped 20% through Thursday trading compared to the S&P 500's (^GSPC 0.74%) 4.2% rally, according to data provided by S&P Global Market Intelligence.

That short-term spike removed just a small portion of year-to-date losses for investors in the company, though, which has been posting declining sales in 2024. Yet it could point to more gains ahead for this underperforming consumer staples stock.

Slashing costs

Goodyear announced on Monday that sales continued to shrink year over year, and that earnings declined again. Revenue slipped to $4.8 billion from $5.1 billion, while net loss landed at $34 million, compared to a loss of $84 million in the prior-year period.

Look beyond those headline results, though, and you'll see encouraging progress in the company's cost-cutting initiatives. Operating profit margin in the core U.S. segment improved to 8.8% of sales from 8.3% of sales, and overall adjusted margin ticked up to 7.2% of sales from 6.5% of sales. That improvement marked the company's fourth consecutive quarter of rising profitability. "We are delivering solid results," CEO Mark Stewart said in a press release.

Looking ahead

Goodyear sees room for further cost cuts, both this year and next, leading executives to upgrade their projections for efficiency gains into 2025. Management is aiming to get adjusted profit margin to 10% of sales by late 2025, up from the 5% rate that investors saw in fiscal 2023.

That improvement likely won't be enough on its own to fundamentally change the weak performance story for this stock. Goodyear still needs to get tire volumes rising again, at a minimum.

Yet it is good news that the business is becoming more efficient, paying down debt, and slowing the pace of volume declines in the core tire business. Those wins make the stock worth watching into 2025 for signs that a more significant turnaround is taking shape.

Nissan cut 9,000 jobs

In the last 48 hours we've seen Nissan cut 9,000 jobs, Stellantis cut jobs (again) to the tune of 1,100 at the Jeep factory in Ohio, Audi planning "thousands" of job cuts and even a Chinese company, Neta, halting production and cutting salaries while the previous social media activity of CEO Zhang Yong has suddenly stopped on Weibo and TikTok. Turns out making...and selling...cars is hard.

Snowflake Stock Is a Buy Before Earnings, Analysts Say. Just Look at Palantir.

Here is the article.

Snowflake stock rose on Wednesday after an analyst upgraded it on his confidence that the data-cloud company will grow from generative AI demand.

Midday, shares were up 2.8% to $119.78. The stock is down 40% this year; the S&P 500 is up 24%.

Brian White, of Moness, Crespi, Hardt & Co., raised his rating to Buy from Neutral with a $140 price target, which implies a 20% increase from the stock’s Monday closing price.

“Unsurprising to us, the gen AI propaganda of 2023 has proven to be a revenue illusion for the software complex in 2024,” White wrote in a research note. “However, we believe the industry, and Snowflake

SNOW

+1.75%

, will begin to derive incremental activity from this long-term secular trend over the next 12-18 months.”

The stock dropped 15% on Aug. 22 after the company reported second-quarter financials. Despite an earnings and revenue beat, shares tumbled on a squeeze to operating margins.

Snowflake is scheduled to report third-quarter earnings on Nov. 20,

The stock’s drop this year provides an attractive entry point because the company can keep growing, White wrote.

Louie DiPalma, an analyst with William Blair, has an Outperform rating without a price target. On Tuesday, he wrote that Snowflake is software company Palantir’s closest competitor.

DiPalma has a Underform rating on Palantir

+0.63%

, which just posted stronger-than-expected financials for its third quarter. Those results, coupled with the stock drop, could be a good omen for Snowflake coming into earnings.

“Palantir is trading at a $118 billion market capitalization, compared with Snowflake’s $38 billion, though Snowflake has greater revenue ($3.5 billion compared with $2.8 billion for the current fiscal year) and is growing at a similar rate in the same data analytics end-market,” DiPalma wrote.

Federal Reserve Federal Reserve cuts interest rates by a quarter point

 Key Points

  • The Federal Open Market Committee lowered its benchmark overnight borrowing rate by a quarter percentage point, or 25 basis points, to a target range of 4.50%-4.75%.
  • The vote was unanimous. Fed officials have justified the easing mode for policy as they view supporting employment becoming at least as much of a priority as arresting inflation.

JTU tennis | Rules to play

GEO stock | Private prison | up 41% | Trump's victory | Prison stocks soar following Trump win

Prison stocks have soared after Donald Trump’s presidential victory, with Geo Group (GEO) up about 41% and CoreCivic (CXW) up nearly 29%.

Yahoo Finance Anchors Josh Lipton and Julie Hyman break down the uptick in prison stocks and how the Trump administration policies around immigration could benefit these companies.

A key note from BTIG analyst Isaac Boltansky underscores that operations of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol are already outsourced to prison companies, fueling the stock surge.
