20 Habits of Highly Successful Traders

Here is the link.

1.Wealthy traders are patient with winning trades and are enormously impatient with losing trades 2.They realize that making money is more important that being right 3.They look at charts as a picture of where traders are lining up to buy or sell 4.Before they enter any trade they know exactly where they will exit for either a gain or a loss 5.They approach trade number 5 with the same mindset they did on the trade 4 previous losing trades 6.They use "naked" charts and focus on zones 7.They realized a long time ago that being uncomfortable trading is OK 8.The markets are their workplace. They are a participant, not an on-looker. 9.They stopped trying to pick tops and bottoms. 10.They stopped thinking about the market being "cheap" or "expensive" 11.They are willing to change sides if the market tells them to do so 12.They trade aggressively when trading well and modestly when they are not 13.They realize the market will be open again tomorrow 14.They never add to a losing trade... EVER 15.Cash is the goal, but never the measure of success 16.They read about mobs and riots 17.They provide liquidity to the markets while watching price and volume 18.They have a way to gauge fear, greed and speed of the markets: Tick charts 233, 612 19.They practice reading the right side of the chart, not the left 20.Every wealthy trader has an "edge" they can explain to their mothers 21.Their position size is calculated exactly on risk tollerance 22.Profit targets are based on average range or something objective 23.One or two trades a month make their month 24.Confident decision makers in the face of imconplete information 25.A losing trade does not mean they are a loser 26.They buy higher highs and sell lower lows 27.Their business isn't trading, it's finding the right trades 28.They write down or record every trade, price, thoughts, news, attitude 29.Their conviction on an active trade remains unless something major changes 30.A winning trade does not result in taking on extra risk the next trade 31.They trade the reaction, not the news

How to Create a Risk Management Strategy for Swing Trading and Day Trading

Here is the link.

Step 2: stop loss

$0.50 stop loss in total

Step  3: position sizing

What is risk management?

control risk you are taking with your trading capital

Risk capital - an amount of money that you would be comfortable losing and that if lost, would not greatly affect your current financial situation.

Risk per trade - the amount of money that you are willing to risk each time you place a trade

Maximum exposure - the overall amount of money that you are willing to have at risk at any one time.

Here is the article.

Millions of software engineers jobless since coronavirus

April 18, 2020

Introduction

It is time for me to think about how to contribute something to the community, million of software jobs are eliminated since coronavirus temporarily. I should think about how to serve the community and share some of my viewpoints.

How to make a living and build a career?

I just came cross Groupon 3000 on layoff or furlough, and yelp over 1000 on layoff as well. I met a young lady on hackerX event who worked for a startup in Vancouver area and she is looking for a job. So I guess that number can be millions.

I do think that it is such challenging time to find a job when millions are looking for a job.

It is time for those people on job search thinking about alternatives.

  1. Learn person finance, invest on stock market when it is bear market; lot of opportunities.
  2. It is best place for ex-software engineers learn and practice sound analytical skills and quick learning skills to make some income;
  3. Focus on long term plan; review a lot of things in your own personal finance; Frugal is good choice for long term sucess in your career;
I also think about contributing to the community using your past experience, so you and all others can make this industry better place to stay and learn and grow.

Business plan: If SPX bottom is around 1200 to 1500

April 18, 2020

Introduction

I did not make profit when SPX went up from 2900 to 3300, and then dropped from 3300 to 2200, and went up from 2200 to 2800. I will continue to stay in the market, and go through bear market to lowest 1200. How should I do better for next crash?

Business plan

It is important for me to do pre-mortem analysis. I have to analyze how long I can make even as a long term investor. When market calms down next few years, I should be glad to learn that I own something valuable and discounted prices.

I need to look into those following areas:

  1. Put at least 50% assets on cash, wait on sideline until the market goes down below 2200 SPX;
  2. I need to time the market down turn from 2800 to 2200 SPX, avoid this loss of 600.
  3. I need to think about SPX from 2200 to 1200, how to invest on equities?
  4. Will continue to work on.

Julia investment rules

April 18, 2020

Introduction

It is important for me to make rules and also keep learning, and build wealth and also learn how to manage the risk. I started from May 2019 how to invest long term, using balanced asset allocation, modern portfolio. I like to write down some rules I like to follow, make sure that I can make money in the long term, and also reduce risk to speculate, invest not speculate.

Julia investment rules

I put my 1999 to 2009 10 years USA retirement fund around $25,000 US dollars into stock market, and also my 10 years saving in Canada into TFSA account around $65,000 Canada dollars. I am a single Chinese, 53 years old. I only spent over 1000 hours last 12 months, first time in my life, catch up all basics of investment, learn personal finance.

How to make my rules working for myself? I like to write down a few rules.

  1. Always keep 50% on fixed asset, like bond or cash; so that I will keep stability of my portfolio, hedge against the swing of equity asset;
  2. If the profit of bond or equity is bigger than normal, I should think about taking unrealized gain first, and then time the market. Case study like VAB $3000 swing;
  3. I need to learn day trading basic strategies, learn how to read patterns; time the hours spent on learning;
  4. I should invest on SPX 500, and try to read more about SPX and finance engineering related to SPX 500;
  5. It is ok to try some ideas to purchase stocks; I should design diversification when to purchase stocks, in case some of them go bankrupt; always have more than five stocks same time; write a business plan;
  6. Take care my emotions. It is important to take time to make decisions. There is a lot of opportunities to invest, take time to learn and play;
  7. Be careful not to gamble! Do not bet on 50% probability on big money. Treat those money with respect;
  8. It takes time for me to understand how challenge it is to play with market. Invest on US business, invest on those biggest companies;
  9. Think about some market ideas for me to relax, and keep learning.
  10. Knowledge is power. I have to learn how to share, and how to learn more about business. Read more articles, and understand economy. Be a super good self-learner;
  11. Recognize good teaching role models, follow them; Prepare to share my own experience as well.
  12. Good luck! Keep my software engineer job and career growing. Do not ignore my daily work and long term need to grow my career.
  13. Take care my rental property in USA. Focus on long term investment like a condo. Think about how to live a small town in Canada and own a condo in the future.
Follow up

I like to revisit and then get some feedback from friends. Life is tough, and I like to learn more in theory first about investment, personal finance, business analysis.

Comment:

Guggenheim’s Scott Minerd Sees Chance of S&P Falling as Low as 1,200

Here is the article.

“Investors who are sitting out there right now who rebalanced a few weeks ago and moved from fixed income to equities should probably think about rebalancing again,” he said Friday on a panel. “It could be 1,500, 1,600, 1,200.”
The S&P 500 stood at 2,843 at 12:17 p.m. Friday in New York, down about 12% this year.

“The market at this level based upon where earnings are doesn’t represent any kind of intrinsic value,” Minerd said. “It is being entirely propped up by liquidity.”

Case study: 28% rebounce in 12 business day - 美股急速反弹

Here is the article.

Scott Minerd

Key largo IRA portfolio - April 17 2020

April 18, 2020

Introduction

It is hard for me to stay as a long term investor, I found out that I did not take free lunch of VAB $3000 dollars swing in less than two weeks, so I decided to learn day trading and everything about trading, analysis and forecast of the market. I took $11,000 outside the market since it recovered in 28% rebounce. I like to write down what I did, and show trade gain/ loss report. I will learn and grow.

My reports

Gain/ loss reports

It is so interesting to see the bond price swings, and every time equity value goes down, and the rebalance will trigger to send bond in high price.

Right now, I like to protect myself from huge equity loss in the future bear market, more than 50% loss, I like to sell equities and then put on the sideline, wait!

I do think that market rebounce too quickly, there are so many issues to resolve for every company, not just because of coronavirus.

Long term investor - new school from last three months

April 17, 2020

Introduction

It is so much stress to go over last three month since coronavirus and stock market swings. I also learned a few things, now I can tell what to do as a long term investor.

10 lessons I learn

  1. When the bond price goes up more than 5%, sell all of them and take profit; later purchase back when price goes down. VAB is an example.
  2. If it is 10 year bull market, then do it treat it as the first year bull market. Even though I started again in 9th year bull market. 15% in 8 month on SPX, take all profit, sell all $10,000 VFV, and then wait for next crash.
  3. Do not panic sell when SPX drops 38%.  Do not buy high and sell low.
  4. If a day or three day or a week SPX goes up more than 3%, then I should think about bet on it, do a short term investment; try to make profit.
  5. Study hard before bear market hits. Knowledge is power.
  6. Think about investing like a cashier job in restaurant, hourly paid job. $200 or $300 is good profit to work for.
  7. Try to aim big target. There are so many opportunities when market swings.

30% of Home Mortgages Could Default, Moody’s Warns

Here is the article.

As many as 30% of Americans with home loans, or some 15 million households, could default if the nation’s economy remains closed up through the summer, he estimates.

30% of all borrowers could default on their mortgage

The record 16.8 million new jobless claims already filed have mortgage lenders preparing for the biggest wave of delinquencies in history. By our estimates, more than 30% of all borrowers could default on their mortgage, about 1.5 times the level of defaults during the 2008 crisis.

How second largest U.S. public pension fund is investing amid coronavirus

Here is the link.

The nation's second largest public pension fund has been using a strategy to mitigate the impact of the coronavirus-fueled selloff and is now focused on the recent rally off the lows. The California State Teachers' Retirement System has more than $226 billion in assets under management with a long-term focus. Christopher Ailman, chief investment officer at CalSTRS, joins "Squawk Box" by phone to discuss. Retiring at 65 was already becoming a fading tradition before Covid-19 sank the world’s economy. Now, that traditional retirement age could fall further by the wayside as workers pick up the pieces once the economy gets going again. A survey from Allianz Life Insurance Company finds that half of Americans retired earlier than they expected. A majority of respondents said that they did so for reasons outside of their control, with 34% citing job loss and 25% health-care issues. The online survey was conducted in January, well before the U.S. economy came to a halt due to the coronavirus. But the results still point to a trend that may be amplified in the current economic conditions. “Right now, people are fearful of the future,” said Kelly LaVigne, vice president of Consumer Insights at Allianz Life. “Are the jobs going to come back? Nobody can really predict it.”

My 10 years saving from 2010 to 2019

April 15, 2020

Introduction

It is the biggest lesson I learn in my adult life. I spent much less and saved $65,000 Canadian dollars, but if I purchase $6000 dollars Microsoft stock in 2010 then I will have same return $65,000 dollars in April 2020. I like to look into the challenge for me to learn financial world. I purchased 10 shares of Microsoft in Sept. 11, 2001 $66/ share. What if I purchased 100 share MSFT in Sept. 11, 2001 and kept it all the time?

10 years hard work

I work full time 10 years, I did not take any sick day in 2010 and 2011. I purchased old used car in 2015 (2001 Honda Accord with over 140,000 KM) and also lived 10 years in a small bedroom in a house, paying monthly rent $350/ month to $480/month including utilities, wifi.

I learn that my best year from age 44 to 53 years old are gone; I like to challenge myself to be a problem solver.

Sharesight - holding VAB.TO in Victoria portfolio

April 15, 2020

Introduction

It is important for me to learn when to buy low and sell high. I like to review my VAB.TO position and see if I should sell it 80% to realize the gains before it drops again.

Case study

Here is Sharesight report related to VAB.TO position.

Buy low and sell high

I should think about selling 90% of VAB.TO in next few days, and then purchase back when the price goes down $1.00/ share.

April 16, 2020 8:25 AM

I placed sell order at price $26.86 800 share. Each month there is $50 dividend for 800 share VAB.TO, but I bet that the price 0.25 swing is $200 dollars. VAB.TO will drop price more than 0.25 in a month or two.

I will get back to purchase VAB.TO at lower price. The commission is $10.00 dollars.

A lot of investors expected market to retest lows: RBC's Lori Calvasina

Here is the link.

Lori Calvasina of RBC Capital Markets and Dan Suzuki of Richard Bernstein Advisors join "Squawk on the Street" to discuss the markets as stocks trade lower. Stocks fell sharply on Wednesday as dismal economic data and weak bank earnings fueled concerns over the coronavirus’s impact on the U.S. economy. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 640 points, or 2.7%. The S&P 500 slid 2.8% while the Nasdaq Composite traded 2% lower. Bank of America traded more than 5% lower on the back of disappointing earnings. Citigroup fell more than 4%. Energy and financials were the worst-performing sectors in the S&P 500, dropping more than 4% each. “If this is a precursor to what we can expect throughout the U.S. ... there’s no word for it,” said Quincy Krosby, chief market strategist at Prudential Financial. “The reflects the complete shutdown of the economy.” “The question is how quickly can the economy come back,” said Krosby, noting the market did gallop higher in recent weeks and was due for some consolidation. Retail sales during the month of March plunged a record 8.7%, according to a report from the Commerce Department published Wednesday. That was the largest one-month decline since the department began tracking the series in 1992. Grocery stores, pharmacies and other retailers of essential goods saw a surge in demand last month amid the outbreak, the government said. But sales at a variety of other businesses — such as gas stations, auto dealerships, and restaurants — swooned as state governments shuttered commerce in an effort to slow the virus.

Business plan to sell VDU.TO 40 shares in Victoria TFSA portfolio

Business plan to sell $9000 VFV.TO in Victoria TFSA portfolio

April 15, 2020

Introduction

It is my decision to sell $9000 dollar VFV.TO etf, and I will get back to the market to purchase VFV.TO again at lower price. But I do like to write down my thought process and analysis.

My VFV positions and trades

My business plan

I like to take chance to buy low and sell high. Based on my trades, I do have 134 shares purchased at price below $69.80. The total difference is around 122 * $2.46 + 12 * $7.92 = $387.84.

I do think like a short term investor, and I like to learn how to read SPX chart, and expect in less than three months, there will be at least once 10% downward swing, so I like to get back in and purchase VFV again.

Here are highlights:

  1. My business plan is to get back to purchase VFV.TO when price drops at least 10%;
  2. I need to hold some cash and wait to see how market will go next few weeks;
  3. I like to buy low and sell high, and have some profit from market swings;
  4. I do think that VFV.TO is much diversified compared to specific stocks;
  5. I plan to purchase VAB.TO first, and wait for market going down.
  6. I think that it is ok for me to time the market, as long as I am not "buy high sell low".

As a long term investor, I do not know too much. I do not spend time to learn basic day trading technique, and I did not take advantage to buy low sell high on VAB.TO with $3600 swing in less than 10 days.

I also did rebalance and noticed that the total return is less than $200 dollars. I wonder how I should work on rebalance and come out better strategies.

Everything gets better after I went through stock crashed, 4 time circuit breaks in less than one month.

My understanding of cruise business

April 14, 2020

I did not prepare to purchase cruise stocks until I learned that it is so challenging for the business, uncertainty of coronavirus. I do think that I could not afford the full price as a single 53 year old.

I am glad to learn that cruise stocks went up today. I like to remember those days sufferings mentally and physically because of coronavirus.

The day cruise stocks go up tremendously will be my happiest day as well.

Sharesight - why I could not sell VAB and then purchase VFV at March 19, 2020?

April 13, 2020

Introduction

It is challenge for the baby investor Julia to take some action to purchase at lowest point SPX 2304.92 because I did not have cash in my portfolio, the bond had near 10% loss at lowest point. It is time for me to document the case and later I will think about more about this situation.

Case study

It is easy to recall the situation from March 19 to March 14 less than five days situation using sharesight.
