Yahoo finance my portfolio - SPX 1.6% increase

May 9, 2020

Introduction

It is tough learning experience. What I can do is to record a few portfolios using Yahoo finance - My portfolios, so I can easily track the update daily on those portfolios.

My portfolio

I do not have good ideas how to invest and also time the market.Right now, I sold some SPX ETF and VAB.TO bond positions, and wait for next market test low.

It is not easy to learn how to work on investment as a long term investor. What I have to do is to keep journal my experience, and better manage myself in terms of using Yahoo finance - My portfolio.

I also added more views to help tracking stocks and here is the snapshot of views:

Wechat group idea - Every one contributes something

May 9, 2020

Introduction

It is my idea to build something together as SJTU wechat investment group. I like to propose two ideas.

One idea

I think that it is a good idea to build a stock portfolio for investment wechat group, so that we can find some good educators to share knowledge.

Another idea

It is not a bad idea to share knowledge and also help build a good community to learn how to invest. Most of important is to learn basics, and avoid loss in the stock market.

Reading day - CSS and my favorite website

May 8, 2020

Introduction

It is in the special time of coronavirus. The virus reminds us what is most important, what are essentials for business. I like to remind myself to focus on basics, and also expedite my coding speed on CSS. What I like to do is to review CSS, and spend a few days to warm up CSS grammar.

Super talent programmer

There is no secret to be a super talent programmer. I have to push myself to be a good learner, reading is most economical way to learn things and also reduce the cost to build website and content management.

I have to humble myself as a human being, and then spend enough time to read; afterwards I can memorize so many things, do not need to think hard and code CSS quickly, with good style as well.

My favorite reading time

Here is my favorite reading web page.

4 Lessons I Wish I Knew before I Started Day Trading

Here is the link.

1:06 There is NO secret day trading strategy that guarantees 100% win rate 4:18 Do NOT follow others' trade alerts to buy or sell stocks 8:40 Focus on learning to read the stock charts first 10:47 Learning to day trade will take TIME and patience

Day Trading is NOT easy... it's definitely not a get rich quick scheme Here are 4 Key Lessons I wish I had known before I started learning to day trade: 1. Stop looking for "SECRET" Day Trading strategies that will give you 100% win rate. They do not exist... what's missing in your day trading is screen time and experience. 2. Stop following others' trading alerts, aka chat room alerts to buy or sell stocks 3. Focus on chart reading first and foremost when learning to day trade as a beginner. 4. Day Trading takes time to learn slowly and steadily. Do not expect fast results and start making it rain within two weeks.

I like to push myself to learn basics, and do not worry about making or losing money. Knowledge is power. Choose to be a long term investor.

How missed rent payments spark a 'cascade' of financial hardship

Here is the link.

Many Americans affected by the coronavirus pandemic are struggling to pay their rent when they have lost income and haven’t yet been able to secure unemployment money. Missed rent, in turn, adds up to landlords who can’t pay their mortgages or property tax. And then cities and states will struggle to provide the basic services that tax payments fund. Paul Solman reports on this “looming cascade.”

Preparation - Sell par 401 K equities and keep the bond position

May 7, 2020

Introduction

It is important for me to stay in the market but take less risk for down turn. I am thinking about selling position when SPX is above 2800, and then I will definitely get back in when SPX is around 2400.

Preparation

I need to sell a few positions, so that I will not buy low and sell high.

Air Canada - a share holder notes

Here is the article.
Air Canada said it is also moving up the date for retiring older Boeing 767, Airbus A319 and Embraer 190 aircraft, with the Embraer regional jets exiting the fleet immediately. The move will simplify the fleet, reduce its cost structure and lower carbon emissions.
In March, Air Canada drew down about $1 billion from its lines of credit, and now has unemcumbered liquidity of CA$6.5 billion, down from CA$7.4 billion at the start of the year. Last month, it obtained a one-year term loan for $600 million, secured by aircraft and spare engines and said it will continue to pursue additional financing arrangements. And in late April it concluded bridge financing of CA$788 million for 18 Airbus A220 aircraft, which Air Canada expects to replace with long-term secured financing later this year.

Blackrock inc - Learn from professional traders

It is unbelievable to go over how many shares Blackrock inc purchased on March 31, 2020. I just could not believe that I did not spend my fund in VAB.TO over $22,000 Canadian dollars to purchase equities.

Business plan: Work on $10,000 dollar purchase on OVV.TO stock

May 4, 2020

Introduction

I like to be a good stock research, and I like to look into how to purchase $10,000 dollar OVV.TO stock and also OVV stock in Ameritrade.com, and see if I can make some profit in next two to three years.

Everything about OVV.TO

I just found that blackrock.com had purchase of OVV.TO stock on March 30, 2020 through the web page:

2020-05-01
Form 13F
Purchased Date
Investor BlackRock Inc
Shares    1,264,546
CurrentValue (x$1000)  3,413

purchased price 3413000/1264546 = 2.70 US dollars = 3.50

But I only purchased 100 shares, price 3.70 Canadian dollars on March 27, 2020

I like to see if I can invest on this OVV.TO stock and see if I can invest $10,000 dollars, and then get something back as return.

It is not easy for me to manage the risk. How many things I should check and also how long I should time the market to get in and also get out.

Business opportunity - Canadian oil stock 60% up in less than one month

May 4, 2020

Introduction

I did study bear market and then learned a few things about bear market. When people panic sell, the market price usually goes too low, I should catch up the opportunity. My Canadian stock with $2000 dollar purchase went up 60% in less than one month, OVV.TO stock went up 120%. I need to look into my purchase March 27, 2020. Why I did not even think about selling all bond around $22,000 Canadian dollars to purchase those Canadian oil stocks.

Big gamble?

I have to learn that it is not risky and it is not gamble. I am not sure what it is. I purchased $13,000 dollars on SPX and another equity ETF in one day, highest position SPX 3300. If it is not gamble, then I should not treat $13,000 dollar purchase at lowest position SPX 2200 as a gamble.

I should treat those two transactions fairness.

Yahoo finance my portfolios - Bring good feeds for my positions

After more than one hour to add positions for my Key Largo positions and Victoria TFSA positions, I found out that there are so many benefits inside Yahoo finance my portfolio. The news feed is related to positions I have, and also from various good-quality places.

Showcase of my Key Largo portfolio

I will add some content here.

Actionable Items

I should start to use Yahoo finance my portfolio back in 2019 May, instead I just started to use the product feature until May 1, 2020. I should do better research to get best tools in the market.

Right now, I am a long term investor, but somehow I chose not to stay on the course. My SPX 500 ETF and bond are sold most of them, and I am waiting on the sideline.

Bear market is such great time to take some calculated risk and make big profit. But I show more passion with wechat tool to share my VAB.TO bond swings, I should focus on myself and think about selling high and buy low. Now my portofolios was with over $10,000 dollars loss from peak February 2020, now it is close to May 2019 I started.

There are good learning experience for me to learn a few free tools.

Dr David Paul - The Psychology of Trading & Investing

Here is the link.

David Paul:
1. A method
2. manage our money
3. manage ourselves.

Stick to a simple set of rules regardless of feelings or internal gut feelings. He compares it to training, simple discipline. No one knows if the market will go up or down and not in that order. The “game” is to learn how to make money in the market over and over again.

The money that you make is a function of both the hit rate and risk to reward. Most just think of the hit rate, vs think about the risk to reward and the hit rate. The internet is full of hit rate systems, most of these systems in fact lose more than they hit.

Every trade has two decisions associated with it: long or short, how much do I bet what percentage of my portfolio do I bet/trade. You should not risk 1-2% of your portfolio on any one trade.

The pituitary gland is responsible for every emotional response you have in a day. When you have good trades in a row the pituitary changes the way you feel and think. When you have multiple wins you think you’re invincible, and you up the bet/trade amount. The good trades cause you to go broke, be aware and careful of euphoria when making good trades.

You only need one good pattern, could be a wedge pattern or head and shoulders or any pattern you like.

Have the discipline to do it and use it over and over again. Regardless of your feelings or percentage of good trades. Stick to the pattern you know well, keep it simple and trade no more than 1-2% of your portfolio.

Discipline can be and should be built. Discipline gives consistent gains and hedges your losses. Wealth is built over a long period of time. Discipline requires you grit your teeth and stock to the plan, follow it without deviation for 20-30 trades.

Make your plan mechanical, the more mechanical the better. Stick to it to make it a habit over 20-30 trades. The first few trades are difficult to stick to the plan. But stick to it have discipline, until it’s habit.

Focus on perfect execution of the plan between 5-20 trades. You are 8-13 trades away from the trader you want to be, but they never get there until you adhere to the plan, using no more than 1-2% of position sizing when trading.

Summary
Risk no more than 1-2% of your portfolio Make a plan and stick to it no matter what -create mechanical trading system, more mechanical the better - keep it simple, learn 1-2 patterns and stick to it. Stick to the plan 20-30 trades until it’s a habit. Till you wedge it into your neural pathway. Careful of pituitary euphoria after a string of good trades. Don’t increase your portfolio risk.

Phillip Konchar: Trading Like a Business

Here is the link.

What Makes a Great Trader?

Here is the link.

What makes a great trader? 1) You need a technical edge, a system that puts the odds in your favour. 2) Money management - You need to understand risk and be able to manage this ongoing. 3) Psychology - You need to learn, understand and be able to apply trading psychology 24/7. You must have all three to trade successfully and they're written in order of importance. You must also learn each aspect in the order I have written them. You can be a master of trading psychology or money management, but if you don't have a technical edge you won't make money. 95% of retail traders never overcome step 1, this is why so many fail.

Comments:

2:52 The most important thing. A: What you do with your losers and B: how your portfolio is constructed.

Tenacious, and also handle the stress.
Work as professionals.

Sponge - key aspect - what is noise, what is important? Spend as little time possible not important - risk adjusted profit

The 11 Trading Rules Of A Market Wizard – Marty Schwartz

Here is the article.

Marty Schwartz has always been my favorite trader from the Market Wizards book and I recently read his own book (Pit Bull: Lessons from Wall Street’s Champion Trader). In the following article I would like to discuss and revisit 11 of his personal trading rules and principles, which I also use to some degree in my own trading, that could help other traders improve their own trading and provide some insights how a professional trader approaches trading.

  1. An object in motion will stay in motion
  2. The Magic T Indicator
  3. Red light / Green light
  4. Don’t put stops below the low and above the high in a range
  5. Put/Call contrarian indicator
  6. Understand the news
  7. Connect with your charts and work ethic
  8. Use a checklist and a trading plan

Schwager. Interviews with traders; its a big series. 5) Psychology of Trading - Brett Steenbarger. Psychologist specially focused on trading has written several books.

Book reading: “Market Wizards” by Jack Schwager

The book “Market Wizards” by Jack Schwager around the end of the eighties. He interviewed many of the top traders in the US, including those that I quote from above. His conclusions were similar to my own in that each of the big winners had a radically different trading plan which suited their own personalities and beliefs about markets. Market Wizards is a must read for those who are determined to become winners in the trading/investing business.

Book reading: “Practicing the Power of Now” by spiritual writer Eckhart Tolle

Mark Douglas’s book will help with this, but to build self-awareness and presence I recommend a careful read of “Practicing the Power of Now” by spiritual writer Eckhart Tolle. In this, the author instructs in how to focus on the present moment. All the big winners in life have either been born with skill, gained the skill from parents or more likely developed the skill along the way.

Book reading: “How Champions Think” by Dr Bob Rotella

When you go through the three books I have suggested above, then also consider “How Champions Think” by Dr Bob Rotella. Dr Rotella is the leading golfing coach in the world presently and has worked with all the big name golfers over the past 25 years. Every word in the book applies totally to becoming a consistently winning trader. I could not put it down.

Book reading: Mark Douglas’s book “Trading in the Zone”

Mark Douglas’s book “Trading in the Zone” is a must. In this, Mark talks about how to build trading beliefs that are in sync with the realities of the market environment. This will profoundly change your ability to rationalize a losing position in the same way as a successful business pays its bills.
