Running an application on Kubernetes is only half of the journey. Reliably serving it on the Internet is the other half. Load balancers are critical when exposing services to the world. Kubernetes provides a variety of constructs to facilitate this. However, Kubernetes was designed at a time when VMs were pervasive and cloud load balancers were optimized for VMs. This translated into design compromises. In this talk, we will review the evolution of load balancing in Kubernetes, discuss the trade-offs, and introduce a new approach to expose containers through load balancer with no compromise on GKE.
