Case study: Par 401 K 2010 - 2019 TRBCX return

January 4, 2020

Introduction

It is my project management skills. I have to learn how to cover most important projects in my life, like management of my 401 K with Par tech inc from 2007. I did not spend time at all from 2009 to 2019 January, and I like to write a short case study about TRBCX fund in my Par tech 401K.

Case study

I invested $8000 US dollars in 2007 in my 401 K. And I like to review TRBCX fund in my Par tech 401 K.

Here is TRBCX fund's page.
I worked on my 401 K par tech in May 2019. I set up portfolio with 30% bonds, 70% equity. I like to work on calculation of return if I choose put all $6,000 dollars into TRBCX fund.

Here is Bankrate.com calcultor I like to use. What if I put all those $8000 dollars into TRBCX from 2017 to 2019.

From the above tables, using 15-year trailing return 11.04%, and then fill the form on bankrate.com webpage, the following is the copy of bankrate.com screen. The form can be accessed using the link here.

Actionable Items

In reality, my 401 K par tech has only less than $7000 US dollar balance. I did write blogs to show the summary. Here is one of them.

I need to work on a few things in order for me to understand the above optimal solution.

1. Be confident on self-learning on investment;
2. Work on asset mix, asset allocation. Best way to learn is to read a book, such as Boglehead investment. I should slow down everything, church, tennis, sibling chatting, shopping. I have to learn basics as early as possible;
3. Keep reading articles, learn every day on how to invest;
4. Learn to find tools to help me manage portfolio 10 year return;
5. Understand my goal, I do not need to use those 401 K money from 2006 to 2019. Why I do not take risk and let fund grow by allocating equities into the fund.
6. I have to keep reading and learning. I should keep a journal of my study.
7. Build a community around myself, how to invest, talk about investment, and also try to be a millionaire, instead of worrying about immigration, work permit, full time, or other things.
8. If I have full time job, then I will keep making money; if I do not have full time job, then I should invest those time to learn investment, personal finance. So much to learn, so little time to work on my goal.
9. Learn how to manage myself, stay confident.
10. Take some risk in investment.

So the difference is more than $21,000 US dollars. In other words, if I control my emotions, keep the portfolio in 2009, then I will have return up to $21,000 US dollars. In 2009, I took $30,000 from my Amtrust home equity line from 2008 January to 2009. I did review and then found records I transferred $30,000 US dollars to my Chase bank checking account.

Life is such challenge to live, at that time, I was so afraid that Amtrust bank will take back home equity line. I also kept over $15,000 IRA into IRA CD account.

To be a self-learner, it all starts from reading an investment book; My FAU classmate told me to invest on index fund. At that time, I was so busy with so many things. I do not have to spend money to take a course, I just read the book, write down what I learn, and continue.

Case study: My par tech 401K to TRBCX fund

April 16, 2019

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. I continuously study personal finance, and there are so many projects to work on starting from Nov. 2018. Finally I have time to work on my par tech 401K, and then I learn that I should have taken risk and put those fund in growth fund starting from 2007.

Case study

It is the first time since Par tech changed to Charles Schwab and I had time to look into what are available funds starting from 2010 to now. It is nine years. I can not explain what is my issue. Ignorance, arrogant, and I do not have a husband and a boy friend to remind me to review the account, download statement every year, show some interview to learn how to rebalance the account, and learn some strategy like three buckets shown in Morningstar Christian.

I just was busy with all kinds of activities and do not know that my job is to grow those fund in 12 years, double at least. TRBCX fund is one of funds available for me to purchase any time, no minimum, the performance from 2010 to 2019 is 10 year 14%. If I move the fund into TRBCX, I should have 5 times more value.

What is wrong with those 10 years?

That is so far biggest bad behavior I have found in my adult life from 2010. I just could not believe that as a software programmer, a single person over 44 years old, new immigrant to Canada starting from 2010, I do not show responsible to grow my babies. Those earned income in my full time job in a startup company called Siva, Par Siva from 2006 to 2007.

Case study: My 401 K management lesson No. 1

April 25, 2019

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. I like to learn and look into my 401 K management lesson on par tech 401 K fund.

Case study

I did study my par tech 401 K. I invested $8,000 dollars into my 401 K from 2006 to 2007.

I like to put some facts in the following:
1. mutual funds holding from 2006 to 2008.
2. 2008 loss screenshot
3. 2009 to 2019 money market fund

I like to analyze how many mistakes I made as an investor, what common mistakes I made as a naive investor from 2007 to 2019. What can I do in order to improve myself as a problem solver? What was my thinking process? How many big mistakes I made through those 12 years.

1. Buy high sell low in 2008.
2. I should get back to those funds when market comes back. I should follow S & P index.
3. I should not put money market fund in 2009.
4. I should spend time to rebalance, and at least learn how many funds available.
5. I should spend time to chat and look into how to grow those investment. I can grow those $8,000 dollars into $30,000 dollars using Par tech 401 K plan by choosing TRBCX or FXAIX from 2010.

Ideas to work on

If I learn how to invest in the equity market, those fund from 2010 to 2019 can be tripled in TRBCX fund.

Laidoff in 2007 turns into such great experience for me in my life. If I can handle the 401 K properly and I stayed in the course on equity funds in 2008, then I will let those fund grow to $20,000 dollars.

I should spend at least one hour every week to learn Schwab Charles 401 K website, and also learn all investment funds available starting from 2008.

I should learn personal finance since I have 401 K fund with value over $6,000 starting from 2007.

Good finance habits

I should spend time to learn my 401 K fund by studying the website, chat with the representative online, and also study the learning center from the website.

I should study all available funds and then try out different funds from 2007 to 2019. I am so ashamed that I do not have any transaction from 2009 to 2019.

Ten years blank history as an investor. I am so ashamed that I do not learn and also practice as an investor.

It is hard to read this case study. I just could not believe that life is so tough for me to accept myself as a learner. It is tough road for me to be a Canadian citizen.

Case study: Par tech 401K plan performance review

April 15, 2019

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. Today I spent one hour to go over the performance of my 401 K with par tech with Charles Schwab, and also this is the first time since 2007 I chatted with a representative online how to rebalance the portfolio. I like to do a case study on my performance.

Case study

It is the first time in my life I realize that that is my job to keep those 401K money grow. I did not show any curiosity to learn how to grow the money. I did not have annual statement, I did not chat with representative. I was too busy with my life.

One thing I chatted with my sister last August when she visited me, she said that if you like to make more money, you should consider to sell something on wechat or on internet. I was so ashamed about my financial situation, so I chose to start personal finance study starting from Nov. 2018.

After six month study, over 500 hours watching videos from youtube.com, morningstar.com, I spent hundred hours with personal finance director Christine and her teaching. I finally figured out that it is not difficult for me to learn and come out a plan, double the money based on Future value calculation and the rule of 72. Based on stock market bull market last 10 years run, it should be taken less than 10 years to double the money.

I only could find my 401K fund performance from 2010 to 2019. The following is my performance.

I have to push myself hard to figure out how to cover last 12 years loss. Ideally I should be able to double the money from 2007 to 2019. I have 12 years for me to learn how to double money. If I start to learn personal finance, economics, morningstar videos on youtube.com from 2010, I spend over 1000 hours to learn, I definitely should come out a few ideas how to do it.

As a matter of fact, I do not learn the importance of personal finance. Last 20 years I did not find any investment opportunity to fit for me. I just could not believe that I was so lazy to grow rich and build wealth. I enjoy so much activity, indulge in consumption. I just could not believe how superficial I am. I keep buying clothes, I purchase 10 jeans one time, 10 jackets one time. I just could not believe what I have in my mind from 2010 to 2015.

Here is my account balance in April 2019. I finally know that I have to give myself time to learn stock market, economy first. And then I will figure out ways how to make sound investment strategies.

Comparison with TRBCX fund

I like to compare the performance with existing funds available in my Par Tech 401K plan. This is the first time from 2010 to 2019 I checked how many funds available for the purchase. I need to learn growth equity and long term performance of strong growth of US economy.

Case study: How to build my portolio?

April 25, 2019

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. I like to set up my portfolio and one of ideas is to put money into different funds.

My portfolio

Par tech 401 K

I need to set up my par tech 401 K into TBRCX, FXAIX $6,200 dollars. I like to put into the market in next month, hopefully there is one more year bull market before the market crashes.

I like to actively manage the fund allocation, I like to purchase
TBRCX - $3000.00
FXAIX  - $3000.00

If the price falls, then I will purchase more using my Canada cash to dollar cost average the risk. If the price continues to rise, then I will sell 10% profit and put into bond into my par tech 401K.

IRA Ameritrade

I need to transfer my IRA CD from 1.2% 6 year term into Ameritrade. I like to build those $20,000 asset allocation in the following:

One of consideration is to purchase Vanguard total bond fund, and then put rest of them into Vanguard total market index fund, Vanguard retirement fund 2040.

I know that market is high right now, I may think about 60% on bond fund, 40% on those Vanguard total market, and retirement 2040.

$12,000  VBMFX, bond fund
$3,000    VTSMX, vanguard total market index fund
$3,000    VFORX, 2040 fund

If the market crashes, I will sell VBMFX bond fund, and then purchase more 2040 fund and VTSMX fund.

Rental property management

I need to learn how to manage the risk and serve better the community of Chinese attending FAU in the city of Boca Raton.

Rental in the city of Vancouver

I like to enjoy the frugal living life style and stay as a minimalist.

Canada portfolio

I also like to build $30,000 Canada dollars portfolio. The idea is to invest into VBMFX bond fund.

I like to practice dollar cost average strategy, and also like to take advantage of low value of Canada dollar compared to US dollar.

Stock purchase

I also like to purchase individual stocks, and try to find 20 stocks to hold in long term. I like to learn to find those stocks to hold long term in next 30 years.

Story starting from Siva startup

April 20, 2019

Introduction

It is a challenging life as a software programmer. I did not do very well in decade from 2000 to 2010. I started to work on two startups, one laidoff in 2001, and then went back to computer science PH.D. program from 2002 to 2006, I joined a startup called Siva in 2006, and then Par Siva 2007, second laidoff, and then Par Tech 401 K plan from 2008 to 2019. The last part is screwed up because of my bias and my mental accounting problems. I like to document this part of experience.

Case study

This part is most difficult for me to adapt to good finance savvy person. I have to push hard to make it happen since I turned 50 years old.

I do not know that the programmer should manage her 401 K very well, and should have gained a lot of wealth from 2010 to 2019 bull market. At that time, I was in 40s, now I get old. I am over 50 years old. I like to start to learn again about equity market. I need to remove my bias from 2002 loss in stock market and 2009 stock market crush.

Here are a few blog about Siva, Par Siva, Par Tech stories. Enjoy.

Date my money: Chat with Charles Schwab online support

April 15, 2019

Introduction

It is my personal finance. After six month personal finance research, I start to work on my par tech 401K performance review. This is the first time I took what ever I need to learn again, I asked a few questions first time from 2007. I could not believe that it is the first chat last 12 years. Thank you Par Tech, my ex-employer in USA. The 401K provides so much good feature for me to rebalance, transfer the fund.

Chat

I like to share my chat history here. I like to encourage myself to learn and be humble. Build wealth and grow rich is so exciting. I need to invest time to learn stock market first. I invested 401K in 2007 $8,000 dollars. If I am smart enough, then I should double or triple the money after 12 years. Specially if I choose to put all the money into fidelity index fund.

David D.: Hello, my name is David. Please give me a moment to open your account.

David D.: Go to Manage Account > Investments > Transfer

JIANMIN CHEN: Good to hear from you.

David D.: Is there anything else I can do for you at this time?

JIANMIN CHEN: And also I like to ask question about my account, I did not know why my fund is changed to different fund automatically.

David D.: Which funds were changed?

JIANMIN CHEN: My current fund MetLIfe GAC $5317, I never knew that I made purchase on the fund. I did not know when I did.

David D.: That transaction goes back to 3/27/2018 for $5,203.83.

JIANMIN CHEN: I also like how to specify sell $3000 dollar value fund from metlife GAC, and then purchase $3000 index fund. The option -rebalance is not working very well. What is transaction cost?

David D.: You will want to do this as a $3,000 transfer from metlife to the index fund.

JIANMIN CHEN: What is the minimum of fund amount for new fund? Should it be $3000 dollar minimum for fidelity index fund? What is transaction cost for each sell/ purchase.

David D.: There are no fees to make transfers in your 401k as well there are no minimums.

JIANMIN CHEN: Wow, unbelievable benefits.

David D.: Great!

David D.: Is there anything else I can do for you at this time?

JIANMIN CHEN: Do I have limit to transfer in one year? Number of times to transfer, rebalance? I also need to make sure that my balance is above $5,000 dollars, otherwise I cannot stay in the account.

JIANMIN CHEN: What if I fall below $5,000 dollars, can I move my IRA account balance from another account to this account to meet $5,000 dollar minimum.

JIANMIN CHEN: I need to trial and error and figure out a few things on this platform. I did not do any thing from 2008 to 2019 over 11 years.

David D.: May I ask what your objective is for this account? Are you wanting to exchange funds or take a distribution? I do not see that you made a transfer yet.

JIANMIN CHEN: I will do it. This is my 401K account back in 2007, I have IRA CDs over $20,000 dollars with NYCB. I have to push myself to learn how to get into stock market.

JIANMIN CHEN: Last time I lost $2,000 dollars back in 2008, and then I like to say good bye to stock market. I believe that stock market will go up in the long run. So I need to get back to index fund etc.

David D.: Your plan does not allow partial distributions; so, if you take a distribution, you will need to take it all out of the plan.

JIANMIN CHEN: what is partial distribution?

David D.: A great place to learn about investing is the Learning Center at the top of your page.

JIANMIN CHEN: I will do that. I spent six month to learn from morningstar video and personal finance director Christine.

David D.: A partial distribution is when you only take part of your funds out of the plan.

JIANMIN CHEN: I will make a few transfer and limit myself one rebalance at most one quarter. I believe that I should be allowed to do that.

JIANMIN CHEN: Thank you to explain partial of distribution.

David D.: You have the rebalance options of one time; 2 x per year, or 1 x per year.

JIANMIN CHEN: Can you explain in more detail, every year how many times I can do rebalance?

JIANMIN CHEN: How many times I can do transfer?

David D.: You can transfer as often as you like; however, some of the funds in your plan do have trading restrictions.

JIANMIN CHEN: I read those trading restrictions already.

JIANMIN CHEN: Thank you. I think that you answer all my questions now.

Case study: personal finance bad habit associates with impulsive shopping

April 19, 2019

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. I found out that I did not spend time on my par tech 401 K from 2007 to 2019, I do not do monthly or quarterly or annual rebalance, I do not do the fund analysis or basic follow-up. I do not spend time to look into research about investor psychology. There are so many issues in the management of the account. This is all related how to value the time, value the community, value the money, value the research, value to reinvent myself. I believe that this is associated with my impulsive shopping problem and emotional problems, my decision making process.

Case study

I think that frugality study helps me to learn to separate wants from needs. 24 hours or 72 hours rule helps me to learn how to delay gratification. I also learn how to identify the short enjoyment of holding those clothes or items and short time period sense of ownership. I do not bother use them after the purchase.

I also learn from minimalism life style. When I did shopping coats, one time I drove my SUV and cross border to Bellingham, I bought six coats on sales.

I have to find ways to release my stress, or my social needs. Those emotions went to enjoyment of shopping from 2010 to 2017.

I also heavily shopped when I took vacation in China. My siblings were also very cooperative to allow me do this gifts shopping costing thousand Canada dollars in 2012, 2014.

I think that the way I understand what money is used for is so shallow. I allow myself to spend unnecessary extra coats, jeans, handbags, sneakers. I only wear off one pair of tennis shoes, I cannot wear any off another five pairs of tennis shoes. I do not know that I can just play tennis using my normal sports shoes.

I wrote the wechat post to reflect on the mistakes I made to treat my par tech 401K account.

Date my money: 401K par tech fund transfer

April 15, 2019

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. I do not grow up very well, I should parent myself better from 2007 to 2019. I should invest time to learn stock market, capitalism. I just could not believe how hard it is for me to learn the economy last six months. I like to write  a story how I date my money today. It is my par tech 401K.

Date my money

I like to get familiar with the 401K software environment. I know that I have to be patient to myself, allow myself to learn and warm up. I just learn dollar cost average through one of my favorite financial planner. So I plan to adopt the strategy, and like to come out a plan how to transfer my fund into index fund.

One of ideas is to purchase $3000 US dollar to index fund once, and then forget about it.

Another idea is why is now? I do not like to time the market. The idea is to invest on index fund next 12 months, if there is a crash, then I will add more fund into index fund. I can make it longer, I like to take 3 years to transfer $3000 us dollars to index fund. I like to try dollar cost average and hopefully the price in next three years will go down and then up, so I can benefit more on value once the price goes up.

To warm up, I just transfer 4%, $200 US dollar to index fund first.

I just did purchase Jan. 2019 using Canada RRSP with Scotia bank. I just did quarterly review on RRSP. It went up over 10% this year.

Actionable Items

It is tough lesson for me to learn. I do not give myself long time horizon to learn personal finance. I started in Nov. 2018, over 50 years old. It is never too late. All I have to do is to date my money, learn and get familiar with concept, tools, and learn a few more strategies.

When opportunity comes, I will know what to do. I also can identify the opportunity as well.

Best date in the world. I love stock market and I like to learn how Capitalism works.

Thank you Par Tech

April 16, 2019

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. I found out today that my biggest mistake is not to work on my 401K from 2007 to 2019, and then my asset still is around $6,200 us dollar. Originally I invested $8000 us dollars. I like to figure out the deepest part is that the feeling of laidoff, the painful experience. I should have embraced much early and be happy to work with those 401K with Par tech 401 K plan with Charles Schwab. I will not have any employer who will provide such great platform for me to grow my 401K plan. Although I wasted last 12 years and I did not make any profit compared to my original investment. I did not trade anything from 2010 to 2019 March.

Reasons

I do not know psychology investment too much. I just learned this year. I may have loss aversion, and I remembered the pain of loss of $3000 and I took the loss and sold all funds to keep in money market in 2008.

I also can relate to the difficult time to start full time job again in the city of Vancouver. I also think that my lack of research of personal finance. My motivation to build wealth and grow rich is too weak to tell.

I was struggled to from 2008 to 2010 to get residentship from Canada, I filed the appeal for leave. I got $30,000 home equity line debt from 2009.

A check list

I need to make a check list for annual checkup. Also I need to spend at least 10 hours to review those $6,000 dollar asset.

The rebalance is free and transfer is free. There is  no limit to rebalance. All those features will be charged in non-401K account Ameritrade.com. I chatted with Ameritrade.com, mutual fund is $45.00 dollar and stock is less than $7.00 dollars. This is the first and only chat I have from 2007 to 2019, and it is in March 2019.

I learn that the platform 401K is such great tool, and I have to keep the balance above $5,000 dollars.

Mental tough time: 2007 Par tech layoff | After review of Citrix layoff in Nov. 2021

Dec. 8, 2021

Introduction

It is tough for me to handle stress of layoff back in 2007. I still remembered that I did cry a few times, and how I learned and what I learned from my own experience. I like to write down some lessons and see if it can help me grow as an adult in my 50s.

Stress | Back in Oct. 2007 | Par tech laidoff | My lessons

I did cry and I had tough time to handle things back in 2008. I did lose the job and my work visa H1-B expired. I decided to go back to China, and applied student visa to get back to Florida Atlantic university.

Citrix layoff in Nov. 2021

I came cross my old coworker in online gaming system ltd, and then I came cross this linkedin profile with profile "Open to work". Here is the link.

After 20 minutes or so, I went over viewers, and then a list of profiles found related to "Open to work" as well from Citrix.

I used to work for Citrix for two weeks back in 2007. I still remembered that life was so tough to handle. That is the reason I choose not to buy a brand new car in Canada, I like to save money for rainy days.

From 2007 to 2019 my Par tech 401 K - Five whys?

Dec. 23, 2019

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. I like to push myself to analyze why I did not have any interest with my 401 K account from January 2007 to May 2019. I like to go through all possible reasons, and write a report to show status, my mindset, circle of friends, and all other things.

Five whys?

I like to ask six whys? Why I do not spend time to work on my own 401 K Par tech? What should I learn how to allocate my time to work on.

Why acting on the impulse can have a negative impact on your portfolio

Here is the link.

Taking your money out of the market and putting it into cash can be tempting when the market takes a downturn. Vanguard investing experts Kahlilah Dowe and Don Bennyhoff explain why acting on the impulse to put all of your money in cash can have a negative impact on your portfolio.

It is not about knowledge.

Case study

I did sell everything in 2008 on my 401 K Par tech account and saved to money market fund. I did not do anything from 2010 to 2019. The company par tech used T. Row Price, and then it was changed to Charles Schwab.

Case study: From TRBCX fund to my par tech 401K

One of ideas I like to write is to get familiar with all my par tech 401K funds. What I can do is to go over each fund, and then write a report for each fund. There are at most 30 most funds, most important one is this TRBCX fund. With super good 10 years performance, I should have noticed long time ago, but I have not build a habit to review quarterly, annually.

How to learn TRBCX fund very well? I have to make a plan and also start to work on it.

My retirement life will be super challenging

January 15, 2020

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. I like to write a blog called "My retirement life will be super challenging".

My 401 K and IRA / Risk management

I just had 53 year old birthday in Oct. 2019. I also learned that I had economics behavior problems. I did not spend time to learn how to invest from 1996 to 2018 December, so I left my USA 401 K and IRA accounts no change from 2010 April to 2019 April, capital preservation for Par tech 401 K and IRA CD in Amtrust bank. I will definitely take the consequence, and I will definitely have very challenging life after I retire in Canada.

I was smart to invest my own 401 K for three jobs as a software engineer from 1999 to 2001, Online gaming system, Trendium inc, and then from 2006 to 2007 Par tech inc. I invested IRA one year in 2005 as well. So I invested over $22,000 US dollars.

If I did not close all my funds and then put into IRA CD from 2006 to 2009, my retirement fund will grow with US S & P 500 Index, those over 10 years will create more than three times more market change, over $66,000 US dollars. I just could not believe that my huge mistake and I have common mistakes called recency bias, and paralysis by analysis.

But I got lost in my busy life to learn how to handle my money properly. I did not spend time to learn until I felt depressed in November 2018. Since I could not solve my own housing problem in Canada, I only could save a down payment less than 20% after I worked 10 years full time.

I have to figure out how to catch up, and push myself to learn as a self-learner.

Actionable Item

I learned from MIT open course Andrew Lo, finance introduction, time and risk management are two things to make finance really hard. I messed up two things, one is 20 years time, one is risk management from 1999 to 2019. What should I do next?

I have $9000 Canadian dollar RRSP, and less than $30,000 US dollar IRA and 401 K. I had 53 years old birthday in Oct. 2019. How can I make a living to use those small amount retirement fund?

Make sure that I will work on something meaningful, help myself and also share my struggle and hard work journey as well. I may need to work on research about social service, social housing, and gain more skills like living in rural area and small cities.

Case study: 2010 first quarter Par tech 401 K statement study

May 5, 2019

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. Today it is the first time I looked into carefully the statement of my Par Tech 401 K 2010 first quarter statement. I like to do a quick case study.

Case study

2010 is the year to recover from 2008 recession. Based on the study I did last week, it should fully recover. I looked into my 2010 statement, I saw over 50% gain in 2010.

   Large company [S & P 500 TR]  49.77
   RGACX                                       45.56
   SWPPX                                        49.52
   PAFDX                                        57.76

I just could not believe that in 2010 I did not read carefully my statement, and did not take action to put back my asset back in equity fund as I did before 2008 crash.

Actionable Items

I have hard time to reveal the fact that I do not learn how to read my statements at all from 2007 to 2019. I do not have good financial habit to do book keeping, examine possible leak, major leaks in my personal finance. I totally abandon my 401 K and IRA in money market fund starting from 2008.

I have very hard time to deal with the stress, frustration and difficulty to transit from 2007 full time job H1-B laidoff, 2008 Canada immigration case denial because of not showing financial statement, 2009 appeal case in Canada Federal court, 2010 starting a full time job again in 44 years old.

I started from top paid software programmer from 1999 to 2001, and then one year break as a home maker, went back to Motorola as a research intern, computer science PH.D..

I do not push myself hard to learn the basics why I fail as a business woman. I just chose Christian belief and then ignored the hard work I should do.
