Here is the article to read.

Apex Systems

I like to look into some facts in the article.

Here is the article.

I need to learn those basic financial data, and then I can understand how Canada condo price go up. Those retired teachers will immigrate to Canada from their children, and they buy their own retired condo in Vancouver area as retired couple.

Book study: Why smart people make big money mistakes

Here is the medium article about the book.

Here are some notes I copied from the above blog

Mental accounting

Study by Epler: rebate (people don’t spend) vs bonus (easy to spend)

Bigger bonus = harder to spend

Credit cards — makes us spend $ we otherwise won’t, and often spend more.
Getting around:

Ditch credit card
Every dollar is the same
Wait before spending the bonus (weeks or months)
All income is earned income

Prospect theory

When decision is to make a preference, people look at the positive qualities
Conversely, when decision is to choose worse option, people look at the negative qualities
In finance:

We assign value to gains or losses in absolute terms and not as a % of net worth. Losing $500 for someone with $1,000 vs someone worth $100,000. Remember, every dollar is the same.
We feel more strongly about losses than gains = loss aversion.
Disposition effect — Sell winners early, hold losers too long.

Sunk-cost fallacy

Drive in snow to attend a game for which we bought the ticket even if it means risking life
Don’t want to appear wasteful

Case study: March Florida vacation

Feb. 16, 2019

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. I was too busy to work on personal finance research, I do not even have time to work on algorithm and data structure practice starting from Nov. 2018. Also I was too busy to work on the projects at work. I like to figure out if I can plan a vacation to Florida in March.

Case study

I like to plan to take a vacation to Florida. I like to watch Miami open tennis, and enjoy a few days break.

I need to plan a few things. I need to find cheap airline tickets, I need to plan to clean the rental home, special kitchen area. I need to work on a few other things as well.

I need to empty some space, take my clothing back to Florida. This time I know that I spent over $6,000 dollars on clothing and other things. It is not wise to throw them in garbage can. I like to take them back to Vancouver first. Specially my SONY laptop I paid over $1800 US dollar in 2002 Sept, and I brought the laptop with me the first day intern at Motorola plantation.

If I used those $1800 dollars to hold VIGRX fund, I sold VIGRX in 2002 as loss in February 2002 as a home make, $1900, now the value of VIGRX worths over $10,000 dollars.

Be a wise woman

I like to be a wise woman. One idea is to save money. It may not be a good idea to travel long distance to Florida.

weekly contest 124

Feb. 16, 2019

Introduction

It is my favorite weekly contest. I took a break last Saturday since I had a party to attend. I played the contest this week and I fully enjoyed the contest as always.

My performance

I spent first one hour to write the first two algorithms. But the third algorithm I spent 30 minutes, and then I failed one test case in last minutes. After the contest, I tried to fix the bug in the third algorithm, but this time the bug is more serious. Time limit exceeded, I had no clue how to fix it right now.

Q1 - 993 Cousins in binary tree, here is my discussion link.
Q2 - 994 Rotten oranges, here is my discussion link.

After the contest,

I continued to work on the algorithm, but I could not solve the problem of time limit exceeded.

Q3 - 995 Minimum number of K consecutive bit flips, here is my discussion link.

Follow up

It is 10:40 PM. I do not have time to work on the fourth algorithm. But I plan to write this algorithm as soon as I can. I like to push myself to work hard, I like to be the player who will solve all four algorithms in the contest in short future.

Case study: 2006 citi bank credit card statement

Feb. 14, 2019

Introduction

I got my 2006 citi bank credit card statements. I plan to spend time to analyze my 2006 citi bank credit card statement.

Can I be a good role model of personal finance?

Feb. 14, 2019

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. I started to track my expense, and also spent hundreds of hours to review my citibank credit card statements from 1996 to 2018. I started very late, I just started from Nov. 2018. It is the first time for me to push myself to do research on good personal finance habit.

Eight year nine months

Feb. 14, 2019

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. I like to write a blog to celebrate my current job eight years nine months.

Eight year nine months

I have been on my current job eight year nine months. I like to write down a few things I learn through those years.

I worked on Amazon code screen in 2014. I wrote really bad and sloppy code in 2014. I started to push myself to learn and be a more competitive programmer.

Interviews

Here are some facts.

2006 GM onsite interview
2006 Siva-> Par Siva -> startup experience 16 months experience
2008 Microsoft onsite interview
2009 Microsoft phone screen. Here is the blog called possible triangle.

I started the programmer job from June 2010.

Microsoft

Microsoft code screen on April 2016. The algorithm blog is here.
Phone screen with Microsoft Vancouver Oct. 2017.

Amazon
A code screen from Amazon in 2014.
A code screen from Amazon in March (passed one, but failed one)
A phone screen from Amazon in May 4, 2016
A code screen from Amazon in May 13, 2016 (passed two algorithms)
My first onsite with Amazon in June 2016 in the city of Vancouver.

Interviewing.io
Over 100 phone interview as an interviewer on interviewing.io.

I have chance to meet top talent people in the world. And starting from January 2018, every week I reserve 4 times a week at 10:00 PM to discuss with people on algorithm and data structure using interviewing.io.

My personal finance

I started to work on my personal finance research from Nov. 2018. I know how to do a good job for myself to learn personal finance, start to build good personal finance habit from Nov. 2018.

I tried to document my expenses, and then I learn that I should push myself hard to learn the basics of personal finance.

I think that it is more important to learn personal finance compared to algorithm and data structure; I have to learn how to solve my personal finance problem. I need to push myself to grow rich and build wealth.

With a full time job, I should push myself to save as much as I can. Time is almost running out!

My philosophy

I like to train myself hard on algorithm and data structure. I need to go back to work on coding every hour, solve a medium level algorithm every hour every day.

What I like to do is to build wealth and grow rich. I like to learn personal finance and investment, and I like to continue to work on data structure and algorithm practice as well.

I do believe that the experience I have related to software development will be my asset, I can easily adapt those skills and perseverence into my personal finance, investment, rental business, and IRA accounts management, and other area related to relatives, helping young generation etc.

Case study: Airline ticket expenses

Feb. 14, 2019

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. I like to analyze my expenses of airline tickets, and I like to do a case study.

Case study

Here is the expense of my airline ticket.

2006 - I went to GM for onsite interview. I need to look into the interview again and see what I learn from the experience.

2008 February - I got laidoff from H1-B. I got a ticket paid by ex-employer and then went back to China, and applied F1 visa to get back to FAU.

2008 August - I went to Microsoft Seattle for an onsite interview. This was my first official onsite interview based on algorithm and data structure. I should have prepared those algorithms from 2001 to 2008.

2009 May - I went to Charlotte for a short trip, help a friend's family road trip from Charlotte to Boca Raton.

2012 February - I made a mistake to plan a one-month vacation. I paid expensive ticket, and I also paid by US credit card.

I also made mistake to spend over three thousands dollars for the vacation. Here are blogs related to 2012 vacation.

If you want to become financially stable, you’ll have to seek advice from the financial masters. Easy to do, since nearly every one of them has at least one book available.
Take advantage of that knowledge. If you only get three or four bankable ideas from reading a single book, think about how many you’ll get from reading a dozen or more.
Some of the personal finance books that I’ve enjoyed over the years include: Dave Ramsey’s Total Money Makeover, David Bach’s Smart The Automatic Millionaire, Ramit Sethi’s I Will Teach You to Be Rich.  And…well there is of course the book on the left:

8. Track Your Spending

If you don’t have a budget, then you probably don’t have even a remote idea where all of your money is going. This is one of those good financial habits you absolutely must adopt you if want to get control of your finances.
By tracking your spending, you will be able to identify the areas of excess. Eating out for 50% of your meals? Cut that back to even 25% and cook or brown bag the rest, and you’ll have a nice chunk of change to contribute to paying down debt or building up your savings.
Start tracking your spending now – you may be surprised to find where your money is actually going.

The Four Money Beliefs That Are Holding You Back Financially - Millionaire Mindset Ep. 2

Here is the link.

#1 Negative association with money. I was thought that rich people are greedy
#2 Grew up in a community environment. Brought up to ask for permission before I can take actions. People even have to confront relatives to choose a partner/spouse
#3 Fear of success. I always use an open bucket of crabs as an illustration. If a crab tries to climb out, another will pull the crab back in the bucket. I thought, what is the point of being successful if I had to start again?
#4 Noticed that I was spending too much time with entertainment. Currently cut down time spent on entertainment and social media to focus on being productive and doing the work. Learning to take more actions.

Another comment about ideas:

The 4 common inner conflicts holding people back 1. Negative associations with money and wealth (this is the belief of the 95%) "you should love what you do so much, it's the only thing you're willing to make money from"
2. Overly sensitive to others' opinions, perceptions, criticism, gossip & outright attacks (don't take it personal)
3. fear of changes required for higher level of success, where in-turn you secretly sense deep down within, you say to yourself "maybe I'm not good enough, not worthy or inadequate"
4. realization of unwillingness to pay the price but equally unwilling to admit this; as a result, i.e. attend seminar so you feel better about yourself (in other words; lying to yourself)
• success must be paid in advance • you'll know you've paid the price when you've accomplished it (depends on the size of one's goal) • most people knows how failure feels but not how success feels (fear of the unknown) • Book Recommendation - Jim Newman's "Release Your Brakes" (free pdf can be found online) • Event Recommendation - T. Harv Eker's Millionaire Mind Intensive (free 3-day event) • No 6-figure high earners can operate with high levels of unresolved inner conflicts about money and wealth. Millionaires have no margin for such weakness. (3 keys: know how to make it, keep it, multiply it)

Why Investing Is Simple But Not Easy

1. Match your asset allocation to risk tolerance.
2. Minimize your costs.
3. Stick to your plan

If you can’t help yourself, put aside some “play money” you can afford to lose by speculating and consider hiring a financial advisor to talk you out of a bad decision with the rest of your money. (Vanguard estimates that this “behavioral coaching” can boost your returns by 1.5%.)

The purchase

I went to kingsmark to purchase Canadian dollar and I got $4001.00 Canadian dollars.

One of ideas is to train myself to practice personal finance, and learn how to read the market, and also take some action.

Personal finance research is hard than I think

Feb. 11, 2019

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. I think that learning personal finance is hard than I think.

Personal finance research

I had chance to meet my two classmates from Shanghai jiaotong university and their family on Feb. 10, 2019. The party started from 4:00 PM and ended at 10:00 PM.

One of my ideas to learn personal finance is to share my blogs with my classmates. What I like to do is to get some feedback, and then figure out how to seek advice and be a better self-learner.

I also talked about the personal finance in the party and got some feedback. Learning personal finance is not easy. I was advised by my friend to think about working as a math tutor as a side hustle.

My idea is not to exchange time for money. I like to learn how to make money from the money.
