Weekly contest progress report

March 21, 2019

Introduction

It is my favorite weekly contest on Leetcode.com. I also learn a few things after 24 contests since last September. I like to write down a progress report to show my progress.

Progress report

Last week I played weekly contest 128. This is the first time I experienced something new. I chose to study those top ranking 195 players and their solution to solve Leetcode 1015 hard level algorithm.

It is hard for me to learn so many ideas to solve the problem in a few hours. But after two days study, I started to break through and learn how to solve the algorithm from top five players first.

Top ranking 15 players uses less than 30 minutes to solve all four algorithms. The fact just reminds me to stay humble and continue to push myself to learn.

I also review top player's code and see what I should learn from those top performers in the world.

6 habits of successful investors

Here is the link.

Consumer vs. Investor Mindset

Here is the link.

The difference is the same between the rich & poor. The rich think long-term and the poor think about the next day. Hence, living paycheck to paycheck.

When you are thinking long-term the first realization is this asset (iPhone) will not provide a monetary Return On Investment (ROI). Preferably the next thought that races in are the money spent on the iPhone could be better invested elsewhere.

Hopefully, you are starting to see the bigger picture on the differences of a consumer & investor thought process. When you adopt the investor mindset you literally start analyzing every extra purchase. Not just with the new iPhone but other consumer products as well. Consider the larger purchases you will have later in life such as a vehicle or home. I have seen people purchase past beyond their means which limits your investing power by thousands of dollars in a lifetime.

Hay fever sufferings second year

March 19, 2019

Introduction

I started to experience the sufferings of hay fever again more than one week ago. Last night, my eye was so itching, I could not stopping rubbing, and so many problems and I could not tell what is going on. I believe that I start to have a hay fever again in second year.

Learn hay fever

I need to document my experience and figure out how I can learn from the experience.

It is a hard level algorithm. What I did is to learn as many ideas as possible. One thing I did is to read weekly contest 128 top 50 players and their code to solve this hard problem.

I will write down a few ideas based on top 50 players and the solutions written by them.

Ranking No. 13

VladaMG98

It is so challenging for me to work on hard level algorithm in the weekly contest. What I can do is to study top 195 players and quickly go over all the solutions.

I have to push myself to learn how to write a solution, as simple as possible. Sometimes it is hard for me to write a dynamic programming solution, and there are so many ideas to write one. I just could not belived that I could not come out one simple idea.

I wrote a depth first search solution with backtracking based on rankng No. 13's code. Here is C# code, right now there is an time limit exceeded issue.

Broke window and theft inside my car

March 18, 2019

Introduction

It is my normal working Monday. I walked to my car and then I found my back rear window was broken last night.

Facts and actions

I left some clothes in front door guest seat. Some one broke the window and then took the clothes. Also the drawers are opened and all kinds of things were search in the front seat.

I talked to my landlord, and also talked to my neighbor. My neighbor told me that this morning 4:20 am he heard something and he opened the curtain and took a look.

There is a camera in front of the house, maybe there is a video clip for the theft.

I called rapid auto glass and then in one hour they will pick up the car to repair the glass, and it will take four to five hours to repair.

Dollar Cost Averaging - wise or unwise?

I like to read more articles so that I can learn more about basics related to stock market, investment, and I like to avoid emotional purchase.

Interview: Peter Thornhill - Investing expert

Here is the article to read. I plan to read it and spend 30 minutes to study. Now it is 10:07 PM, I will finish it in another 30 minutes.

The serious stuff really started in 1988 when we came back to Australia and one year after the 87 crash standing in front of people telling them how attractive shares were really didn't get a good reception, but it forced me to re-examine everything I had taken for granted about share speculation whilst I was in England, because I was being told that I was wrong - that you don't buy shares for income, that they're terribly risky etc.
But I discovered on further examination that I was actually right - income is king - and that was the thing that really really spurred me on to invest heavily. From that point onwards, it was just a matter of saving, investing, using debt effectively and – yes – it has totally transformed our lives.

Here is the link. Here is the article in English.

Rafael Cosman:
  Rafael Cosman
  Cosman
  Cosman
Ultimately, Cosman decided that the for-profit tech world wasn’t for him.

Motivated money: You've invested well? Compared to what?

March 17, 2018

The book is written by Peter Thornhill. Here is the interview. Here is the web page with one page of introduction Peter Thornhill.

After seeing how most speculators worked, he rejected their philosophy and taught himself what he calls the "right way to invest" - buying equities and closed ended investment trusts for dividend income rather than for capital appreciation.
And the results are awesome! Having started to invest seriously in 1988, his portfolio is now worth in excess of AU $8 million (US $6 million), and through all that, he has raised a family and educated all his children privately.

What I learn to save $50,000 Canadian dollars in savings

March 16, 2019

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. I started the research starting from Nov. 2018, and then I start to work on real estate research in Vancouver area. I like to ask myself what I should do in terms of time horizon and risk evaluation.

Time concerns

I have limit time in terms of managing projects. I have a full time job, and then a rental property in Florida to manage. If I purchase a condo in the city of Surrey, then I also risk a few things.

This is the first time in my life that I can save over $50,000 Canadian dollars in my saving account. I have to learn to cut off every expense, and just work full time as a programmer, and weekend and evening personal finance research.

Lessons learned

I did personal finance research. It is not easy for me to learn to be a frugal person. I have to push myself to learn more how to be a frugal person.

Amazon gets an edge with its secret squad of PhD economists

Here is the article.

In the past few years, Amazon has hired more than 150 PhD economists, making it probably the largest employer in the field behind institutions like the Federal Reserve, which has hundreds of economists on staff. It was the only company with a recruiting booth at the American Economics Association's annual conference in January, handing out free pens and logoed stress balls.

To improve that feedback, Amazon tries out interventions like training managers to interact better with their subordinates. Originally, the company brought on a team of psychologists, other scientists and product managers, but before long, it became apparent that they weren't well suited to achieving what Amazon was ultimately after: Better performance. Economists, by contrast, were able to analyze which interventions led to higher worker productivity.

"It wasn't like you had to go in and interview for just one job. You could interview for lots of jobs at the same time," said Fairweather, who left Amazon in 2018 to become the chief economistfor the real estate website Redfin. Once hired, research questions were everywhere. "If I felt there was something really worth digging into, I could go dig into it. I wasn't told ahead of time what was important."

  举例子:2016年10月1日存入1万一年期定期,利率3%;2017年10月1日到期后获得利息300元。2017年10月1日,1年期存款利率3.1%;
