Do I have refugee mentality?

Sept. 29, 2019

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. I heard the term through the interview of Charlies Dreifus, his parents are German refugee, and he was told that he is risk averse, refugee mentality. I like to talk about refugee mentality, and how I should work on this short research.

Refugee mentality

I do have refugee mentality. When I got my student visa back in 2008 to United States Florida, I have this refugee mentality. I will try to make one thing work out, which is my Canada skilled work immigration.

I told myself to be patient. Work hard and work smart. Try to break into any opportunity if I can.

Life is tough without a work permit like permanent residentship. I also have difficulty to catch up research and be able to progress into Ph.D. level from 2008 to 2010.

From 2010 to 2014, I also tried hard to get Canadian citizenship first. Do not work on other things except the status. I need to be able to have a place retire. I need to settle down, even if I do not think that I can afford a condo in price range of $130,000 Canadian dollars back in 2010 to 2015.

I never have ambition to be a millionaire. Be wealth and grow rich. My mentality is changed after 2001.

Actionable Items

I like to figure out how to hold good mentality. I should keep myself confident, based on facts, statistics, my own performance on problem solving.

One thing is to be independent. Do not rely on other people's opinion. Do my own research. Keep people away if they are not positive and being bully.

How Charlie Dreifus' 'Risk Allergy' Shapes His Work

Here is the article with 10 minutes video. I like to spend some time on this article and video.

Risk averse, refugee mentality - I like to look into this topic.

McDevitt: Great. So you're the portfolio manager on Royce Special Equity, and one of the interesting things, I think, about your process and philosophy is you're very vigilant about debt, and companies that have large debt loads you tend to avoid. Tell us a bit about where that vigilance came from? What are the roots of that?

Dreifus: Well, it goes beyond debt, but I'll certainly discuss that. I got an award from my boss, Chuck Royce. It's a caricature of me wearing belts and suspenders. I'm that risk-averse. The origins, I can really trace to two influences. My parents were German refugees who came to the States in the late 1930s without anything. It was sort of a lifestyle. Another interviewer once said to me, "Charlie, you're so risk-averse. You have a refugee mentality." And while I was born here, I said, "Bingo, my parents were refugees." So that's something that I think people either have or don't have.

Harvard tops graduate 'rich list' of colleges that will make you a millionaire but University of Virginia has highest number of self-made men

Here is the article.

Why are Harvard's alumni so wealthy?

Here is the article.

Some possible explanations for the discrepancy:
  • Harvard selects students with higher expected earnings.
  • Harvard selects students from families who are already wealthy (more than other top schools: the wealthy alumni are not self-made).
  • Students who aspire to make a lot of money choose Harvard (over other top schools).
  • Going to Harvard increases students' earning power (more than other top schools), for example, through better networking opportunities.

Jeremy Grantham - difference in pay

Grantham believes that this contract between major corporations and the American public – which he says was strong back in the 1960s – has now collapsed. He cites the disparity in pay between CEOs and the average employees at major corporations as one example of how things have changed. According to the Economic Policy Institute, the difference in pay between the CEOs of the 350 largest US companies and their employees was 312 times in 2017. By contrast, it was just 20 times in 1965.
‘Basically, the capitalist beast is out of control, and it doesn’t owe any responsibility to the society it lives in, the town, the state or the country even,’ Grantham says. ‘Given half the chance, it will just withdraw its business and go and try its luck in Malaysia. They don’t care about the workers, which is even more important.’

Seth Klarman - confidence on capitalism

Klarman, the famed value investor who runs the Baupost Group, voiced similar concerns in early 2019. He told The New Yorker that shortsighted business practices were endangering public confidence in capitalism.
He has an ally in his Boston neighbor Grantham, founder of value shop Grantham, Mayo, Van Otterloo (GMO), who shared his own concerns with Citywire in an interview at his Beacon Hill home in mid-January.

‘I have a very low opinion of capitalism in 2019. We have reached a low point,’ he says.
‘The greatest manifestation of that is the massive emphasis on maximizing short-term profits, which is simply bad business. It is incredibly bad for society, and it’s not good for long-term growth rates. It tends to give you better short-term profit margins and lower economic growth.
‘For capitalism to work, you need there to be some sense of social contract – social discipline, if you will,’ he argues.

Ray Dalio - wealth gap

Dalio, founder and co-chief investment officer of hedge fund Bridgewater Associates, made his comments in November last year, at the Summit conference in Los Angeles. According to Barron’s, he said: ‘Capitalism is basically not working for the majority of people. That’s just the reality.’
He went on to highlight that the top tenth of 1% of the US population enjoys a net worth equal to that of the bottom 90% and even suggested that president Trump should declare a state of national emergency in response to this wealth gap.

Ray Dalio, Seth Klarman and Jeremy Grantham - who are they?

Jeremy Grantham

Here is the wiki article.

Robert Jeremy Goltho Grantham CBE (born 6 October 1938) is a British investor and co-founder and chief investment strategist of Grantham, Mayo, & van Otterloo (GMO), a Boston-based asset management firm. GMO has more than US$118 billion in assets under management as of March 2015.[1] Grantham is regarded as a highly knowledgeable investor in various stock, bond, and commodity markets, and is particularly noted for his prediction of various bubbles.[2] He has been a vocal critic of various governmental responses to the Global Financial Crisis from 2007 to 2010.[3][4] Grantham started one of the world's first index funds in the early 1970s.[5]
In 2011 he was included in the 50 Most Influential ranking of Bloomberg Markets magazine.

My weekly contest ranking concern

Sept. 29, 2019

Introduction

It is my short research. I found out that I do not have time to work on algorithms on Leetcode.com last 3 weeks. My weekly contest ranking is falling from 13000 to 20000. I need to come out the idea to improve my performance.

Ideas please

I need to find several ideas to work on. One is to study leader board, and figure out why top players and how they work on algorithms. I should study their code every week.

Another thing is to focus on tree algorithm as I do before. Always I can solve any tree algorithm, and also I can solve it in less than 20 minutes.

I can focus on a few more ideas.

My Leetcode profile with metrics

Sept. 29, 2019

Introduction

It is time for me to push myself work hard. One thing I like to solve more algorithms, and also push myself to solve more often as well. I should push myself outside of my comfortable zone, start to work on more algorithm daily, weekly and monthly. Wishful thinking will not help any one. I have to work on basics, and work on solving an algorithm problem to help me warmup a day, a morning, an afternoon, and an evening.

My recent submission - Sept. 29, 2019

Sept. 29, 2019

Introduction

It is time for me to do a short research. How should I push myself to work on algorithm and data structure, so that in 12 months, I can finish 300 algorithm on Leetcode.com. I am lucky in a business, full time job, I can have freedom and push myself hard on problem solving skills.

My recent submission

Here is the log of my recent submissions.

I only worked on six algorithms in three weeks. I definitely think that I should have solved around 30 algorithms for one month.

I need to find ways to push myself. One of ideas is to play Leetcode weekly contest.

What else should I do?

Linkedin learning Sept 2019 - weekly progress

It is time for me how to do a good project management. I like to work on new technology learning, and I like to read instead of watching videos. But I just need to get ideas what to look into from Linkedin learning course.

My progress report

I spend some time to watch a few minutes once a while, and then I started to look into related area through Google search. I can learn much quickly by reading and try to find good articles related to the area.

Here is the update from Linkedin Learning.

My interest is called Cordova, Ionic, React Native, Titanium and Xamarin.

My Leetcode mark - 426

Sept. 29, 2019

Introduction

It is time for me to do a short research. What triggers me to work on data structure and algorithm problem solving last week.

Track my time

I started to play weekly contest on Sept. 21, I experienced joy and happiness. The contest was in Saturday. I followed up next Monday to work on algorithms, and quickly shared my learning on Leetcode.com.

I was busy with other projects and I did not have time to write more codes.

I read one of Google phone screen questions, and then I wrote one tree algorithm in middle of week.

Last Saturday I wrote another two algorithms in weekly contest.

In total, I only wrote less than 5 algorithms. But I like to go back to work hard on coding.

10 K walk along the harbor

Sept. 28, 2019

Introduction

It is time for me to work on my fitness. What I did today was to go out to the water front, and spent time to walk 10 K around the harbor, along the Stanley park.

Beautiful day

I like to document the beautiful day I had. I was so gratitude to live close to downtown, and it was so beautiful day. I went out around 10:00 AM, and then spent two hours to watch two shows, each one is one hour. And then I walked around harbor 10 KM and finished around 3:30 PM. I took a bus and then skytrain, went back to home around 5:00 PM.

I like to spend more time outdoor, and also I need to enjoy life, slow down, spend less time inside the house in weekend. I need to work on my fitness, and get close to know Canadian and as a citizen, I like to build good connections to people here.

How to handle unfinished Ph.D. degree?

How to fight depression?

Sept. 28, 2019

Introduction

It is a serious topic. How to fight depression? I am turning 53 years old in less than a month. I should write something serious to help young people to learn mental health, and how to build a good community in my life, and keep working hard to stay positive, stay away from negative people, keep busy working on basic things.

Talk about depression

I read the news about a Chinese Facebook engineer story in Sept. 2019 who was in PIP and committed suicide, jumped from top of building 27. I think that depression is a serious issue in highly competitive jobs. How I handle those issues and how to play best as I can?

My motto is to adopt frugal leadership principle. Cut all expenses except needs. Keep minimum wants, build enough wealth until I am confident to make a living first, put other people next and work on my own financial goal first.

I spend time outdoor to meet people, and learn culture, learn business and how it works, work on my personal finance hard. I felt depressed short time in Dec. 2018, I did not know how to solve my personal finance problem. How to build wealth and grow rich? I still could not afford a one-bedroom condo in Canada after working full time 10 years.

I went to Facebook onsite interview on August 20, 2019, I visited building 27 in MPK, and I met eight engineers and I could tell engineers working there smart and hard working. They are young, and also I think that I may be a great fit for the teams over there. Since I am more open and have tough experience in my life from 2001 to 2018.

My own story

I worked full time from 1998 Dec to 2001 Sept. 17. I made over $110,000 dollar net income beside putting aside 401 K $11,000 US dollars. I purchased a condo at lowest price in history, and a brand new car. I spent most of cash away, only has less than $20,000 US dollars saving when I got laidoff in 2001 Sept. 17.

I had first layoff in 2001, just after Sept. 11, 2001. I was laidoff in Sept. 17, 2001. I stayed at home for one year, and then I went back to Florida Atlantic University to attend computer science PH.D. program.

I got laidoff in 2007. And then I went back to China, got F1 visa, continued to work on my Ph.D. study.

I tried to make things work, I got an offer letter in June 2008 but the offer was rescinded. I went to Microsoft onsite in Sept. 2008, and then I should reply immigration letter about missing bank statement with my Canada skilled worker application. But I did not know at all. The application was denied in Nov. 2008, and I was notified by the consultant until Jan. 2009.

I had 45 days to file appeal for leave case. But I had doubts on myself, I did not have confidence on myself and USA economy. I did not know how to regulate my thoughts and feelings. I knew the life was tough for me since I did not have a lot of skills to make a living. It was in 2009, I was 43 years old. My net asset is very low, and a lot of homes in Florida were under water.

How to fight depression?

I do believe that most important is to push myself hard, learn personal finance, learn how to build wealth and grow rich. And also I like to learn tennis sports, I always find myself so good at sports since I have strong muscle and healthy body.

Every time I feel not so good, hold grudges, I always know that I fall for wishful thinking. I have to push myself to go out to do exercise, try to lose a few more pounds to stay fit. I have to work on a few more algorithms, if I fail one of them, I will be humble right away. I play Leetcode weekly contest, I will be humble right away, since I still am lazy to test my own code, examine my own code.

Another thing is to live a simple life, enjoy things free, and also try something new. A new project, a new idea to work on, ideas to help make the country and community better.

Actionable Items

I need to look into depression as a science, and then look into detail how to measure depression, how to spot personality weakness, prevent negative people and situation, protect my own interest very carefully and hard working to protect myself financially.

Do not play emotions. It is better to play more sports. Be a responsible person, and find those people in my life as well, keep good relationship with them.

Follow up

Oct. 9, 2019

I start to do research about life, wealth and health. I recently visited one of my classmates back in Florida and he had brain cancer found two months ago. Suddenly I learned that my time is running out, at most I can live another 30 or 40 years.

I also warned him that he should be careful about depression since he could not move left side of body, and tumor is not pressing on his nerve system related to memory. He still has perfect memory about his life experience.

I just started to do research about rich people and difference from middle class. How to find stocks ten bagger, or hundred bagger? I start to read financial report of USA business, such as dollars store business, benefit, how they operate. I start to read a lot of business report from the stores opened, and I have strong interest to figure out ways to double the money through investment.

How to bounce back from laidoff in 2007?

Introduction

It is almost 12 years since my last laidoff back in 2007. I have a full time job starting from June 15, 2010. It is almost 10 years. How to bounce back from laidoff in 2007?

Here is my journey

I like to write down highlights what I have done, and what I learn.

1. I took out $20,000 home equity line in 2007 and I like to make sure that I had funds to support myself to get my I-20 again.
2. I went back to China in January 2008 and spent near two months in China and applied F1 visa.
3. I spent time to live with my sister and my mom in the city of Yichun.
4. I tried to get finance support for my computer science graduate study.
5. I worked on IELTS test preparation for my Canada skilled immigration case from February to July, 2008.

Chapter 12. The future of data system - Data integration - study notes

Sept. 27, 2019

Introduction

It is the tough job to learn from reading a book. I like to work on a few ideas to see if I can make improvements. One of ideas is to play with the content in the blog, and put together some notes for myself.

Study notes

I like to cultivate some interest to learn the distributed system. One of ideas is to learn from reading a book.

How should I read the book: Design large data intensive application?

Sept. 27, 2019

Introduction

It is challenge task for me to read the book called "Design large data intensive application". I spent over two hours to read the book, but I evaluated how easy I got distracted on reading the chapter 12, I need to figure out ways to learn.

Drills

One of ideas is to print out all reference for the chapter, if  I have time, then I can try to read one of reference papers.

Another thing is to copy the paragraph on the word, and then I play with the sentence, try to break into notes I can take in the classroom.

It is easy to get lost just by reading, I like to make it more interactive, and I have to keep my curiosity level in certain level. Otherwise I will not be able to continue to read over an hour.

1110. Delete Nodes And Return Forest

Sept. 26, 2019

Introduction

It is the first time I like to try a new algorithm problem in a week. I can feel the nervousness and anxiety first few minutes, but I quickly calmed down and allowed myself to think more carefully. First 5 to 10 minutes I thought about how I could solve it in less than 10 minutes, but I just allowed myself to think about carefully, I wrote the solution and passed online judge first submission. It is so wonderful to experience the whole process.

My submission

I also wrote a discussion post, here is the link.

It is a medium level tree algorithm. I chose to write a solution to traverse the tree using preorder, and also one argument is added called TreeNode parent in the recursive function.
Here are highlights of solution:
  1. Traverse the tree and make sure that each node is visited once;
  2. List all possible cases to be covered in the algorithm design.
  3. More on step 2, case 1: Add a node to root nodes, when, what conditions to check.
  4. More on step 2, case 2: if the node needs to be deleted, it's parent node should be updated to set left or right child to null accordingly.

Case study: My financial status in 2010

Sept. 25, 2019

Introduction

I like to work on a short research about my financial status in 2010. It is almost ten years ago, and I try to review my financial status back in 2010. How come I am not smart enough to invest ROSS (stock symbol: ROST) in 2010? I just did a short research and learned that ROST stock soars 11-fold last decade. Here is the blog.

Case study

Here is the link to read about my financial status back in 2010.

Case study: Tariff increase from 10% to 25%

With the White House threatening to raise the tariffs to 25% from 10% on Jan. 1 if a trade deal isn’t reached, vendors and full-price department stores “have loaded up on goods” from China to protect themselves from the possible increase, Morris said.
But after the holidays, it’s likely those stores will have excess inventory they need to sell quickly ahead of the spring, and TJX “is going to be in a position to go in and buy those products,” he said.
Regardless, TJX expects to keep growing in popularity. “We see an excellent opportunity to grow our store base to a total of 6,100 stores,” Herrman told analysts last month, which would be a 50% increase.

Case study: ROSS stock - 2009 - 2019 - surge 11-fold

Ross Stores Inc., a Dublin, Calif.-based rival in the off-price, branded-merchandise segment, has enjoyed similar success. Ross operates 1,483 Ross Dress for Less stores, including about 380 in California. Its sales hit a record $14.1 billion last year, and its stock price has surged 11-fold over the last decade.

Actionable Items

Sept. 27, 2019

I chose to purchase stock starting from 1999, and then I sold everything in stock market and put in CD in 2009. I filed Canada immigration appeal case and then immigrated in 2010.

In Sept. 2019, I started to work on stock research, I google last 20 years biggest stock success, and then one of stocks is ROSS. My most favorite store all the time from 1996 to 2016. I knew I wasted so much money on clothing starting from 1996. I did my personal finance research from Nov. 2018, and then I got all my citibank statements from 1996 to 2017.

I searched best performance stock from 2010 to 2019, and then I believe that ROSS store stock is by far most rewarding stock.

Case study: TJX’s stock price 2009 - 2019 - soar nine-fold

TJX — with annual sales of $36 billion, more than Penney and Kohl’s Corp. combined — has kept growing steadily with only a small online presence. About 2% of TJX’s sales come from e-commerce, analysts estimate.

The company has posted positive annual same-store sales gains — that is, sales at stores open at least one year — for 22 consecutive years amid rapid expansion. Dividends have risen for 21 straight years. While other retailers were shuttering thousands of stores in the last two years, TJX’s store count rose 13% in that span to 4,070 locations worldwide.

The result: TJX’s stock price has soared ninefold over the last decade (after adjusting for its latest 2-for-1 split Nov. 6), compared with a threefold increase in the benchmark Standard & Poor’s 500 index. The stock closed Tuesday at $44.07 a share.

TJX is based in Framingham, Mass., but its largest market is California, where it operated 143 Marshalls stores, 117 T.J. Maxx outlets and 78 HomeGoods stores as of Feb. 3, according to the most recent figures TJX makes available.

Why Amazon can't touch Ross and TJMaxx

Here is the article.

Facts:
1. The average item is only $10, and 98% of the stuff in its store is under $30.
2. No e-commerce, no digital shop

Arguments:
3. Opportunistic purchase
4.  fashion and markdown risks
5.  reacting to what customers want
6. the high costs of online shipping and frequent return rates
7. an off-pricer

Ross, which doesn't have a digital shop, relies on a flexible purchasing strategy to offer top brands at bargain prices, enticing shoppers to head to stores to find clothes they can't buy online.
The average item is only $10, and 98% of the stuff in its store is under $30.
"The place that Ross and TJX occupy is a place that's tough to do online," said Simeon Siegel, a retail analyst at Nomura Group. "I believe Ross is winning because it doesn't have e-commerce, not in spite of it."

Ross calls them "opportunistic purchases." It can either quickly ship the product to shelves to meet in-season looks or pack the products away in warehouses to sell later. Both methods help the company constantly rotate through a wide assortment of styles and fashions.

"They can be more nimble reacting to what customers want," said Moody's senior retail analyst Christina Boni. The business model "reduces fashion and markdown risks that other apparel retailers face."

Despite a healthy economy and a recovery in many Americans' discretionary income since the 2008 recession, widening inequality has created a base of Ross' low and middle-income core shoppers, said John Mercer, a senior analyst at Coresight.

Ross has argued that the high costs of online shipping and frequent return rates mean it doesn't make sense for Amazon to attack heavy-discount apparel sellers.
"The economics just don't work," Ross' president and chief operating officer, Michael O'Sullivan, told Goldman Sachs analysts last year. "If I was Amazon, I don't think I'd be looking at the off-price space as my big opportunity."
Amazon may have reached a similar conclusion. Analysts see the company operating in clothing as more of a traditional department store rather than an off-pricer.

"Amazon looks to be shifting its focus away from cut-price, third-party-branded offerings with the launch of many more private labels and stronger relationships with brands," Coresight's Mercer said.

Fiscal 2018, it bought back 12.5 million shares for $1,075 million.

For fiscal 2019, the company estimates comps growth of 1-2%, with sales likely to increase 5-6%. This compares with comps growth of 4% in fiscal 2018. This along with operating margin and cost deleverage should result in earnings per share of $4.30-$4.50.
