JPM and CIT: Bank stock comparison

July 1, 2020

Introduction

I like to make a short comparison between JPM and CIT, and then talked about my purchase of CIT on highest position SPX 3300, and what I learn from the lesson.

Comparison

What I have to do is to catch the rebound opportunity on July 10, 2020. I should invest $10,000 dollars on this SPX 3100, and then try to make a short return in 3 - 4 business days.

FB stock: Facebook double price in next 12 months?

Here is the article.

At the same time, Facebook is also developing new products like Marketplace, Facebook Watch, Payments and Dating that have the power to make Facebook much more than what it is today, as those respectively compete directly with Craigslist and EBay, YouTube, PayPal and Match Group, businesses that represent hundreds of billions in market value. With a network of more than 2 billion users, Facebook can easily push into new businesses, and diversifying beyond advertising would be a wise move as it would limit its risk and give users another reason to engage with its platform.

Bill miller: Investor Bill Miller calls this market one of the best buying opportunities of his lifetime

Here is the article.

“There have been four great buying opportunities in my adult lifetime. The first was in 1973 and ’74, the second was in 1982, the third was in 1987 and the fourth was in 2008 and 2009. And this is the fifth one,” Miller added.

Investor Bill Miller said during Wednesday’s violent market dive that the current climate is one of the best buying opportunities of his lifetime.

“I think this is an exceptional buying opportunity,” Miller, chairman and chief investment officer of Miller Value Partners, said on CNBC’s “The Exchange” on Wednesday. “I don’t mean to put all the money in at once but I do think layering it in right now is the way to go.”

As Miller, 70,  was speaking, the stock market had halted trading because the S&P 500 fell more than 7%, triggering the level 1 “circuit breaker.” Equities cratered on Wednesday as fears about the economic downfall from the coronavirus continued to grow. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell more than 2,000 points.

Part Two: We are living in extraordinary times. We are calling it the Pandemic Pivot: the changes that have occurred or accelerated because of COVID-19 and the dramatic response to it, from economic shutdown to massive life support. The stock market performance has been largely driven by a small group of well-known mega-cap tech stocks which explains the NASDAQ and S&P 500’s stellar performance and the lagging broader markets. Apple, Microsoft, Google’s parent Alphabet, Amazon, and Facebook make up 40% of the NASDAQ’s market capitalization and 20% of the S&P 500’s. Is the stunning rally off of the recent March lows durable? Are stock prices running on anything other than Fed fumes? Yes, says legendary value investor Bill Miller! He will explain why he joins us for the second of our two-part interview with him.

Here is the link.

Leetcode discuss: 1080. Insufficient Nodes in Root to Leaf Paths

Here is the link.

C# It took me 85 minutes to make it work in mock interview

July 10, 2020
Introduction
1080. Insufficient Nodes in Root to Leaf Paths
What is secret to solve a tree algorithm in Leetcode mock interview. I can say a few things to make it work fast, correctly as well.
Work on a small case study, and also make it simple; ask myself to double check if things can be simplified.
It took me 85 minutes to write code, tested code a few times, and made it work.
Case study
Work on a three nodes tree, root node with value 1, left child with value -99, right child with value -99, limit is 1;
Test case 2:
Root node with value 10, left child with value 5, right child with value 10, limit is 21, return null;
Test case 3:
Root node = 1
root node.left = 2
root node.right = -3
root node.left.left = -5,
root node.right.left = 4
limit is -1
Extra work
I did not analyze carefully, so I started to think about using leaf node hashmap. There is no need for leaf node hashmap.
I noticed that root == null does not work for test case 2, and return is null, the function postOrderTraversal did set root node of orginal tree to null. But test case failed in function
SufficientSubset. Need to take more time to look into this issue.
Hashmap
There is no need to save every node p's sum from root node to p node. Only root node to leaf node's path sum should be used to compare to limit.
C# value type and reference type
I need to look into C# language design related to reference type. I debugged the code using visual studio, I need to figure out how to pass root node reference and make it work.
I made temporary fix to add extra checking in the function SufficientSubset :
if(root.left == null && root.right == null)
return null;
/**
 * Definition for a binary tree node.
 * public class TreeNode {
 *     public int val;
 *     public TreeNode left;
 *     public TreeNode right;
 *     public TreeNode(int val=0, TreeNode left=null, TreeNode right=null) {
 *         this.val = val;
 *         this.left = left;
 *         this.right = right;
 *     }
 * }
 */
public class Solution {
    // root 1, left -99, right -99, limit 1
    public TreeNode SufficientSubset(TreeNode root, int limit) {

         if(root.left == null && root.right == null && root.val < limit)
            return null;

        // preorder traversal the tree and save root to node paths sum into a hashmap
        // int[] first one is sum, second one - 1 - leaf node - 0 - not leaf node
        var map = new Dictionary<TreeNode, int[]>();

        TreeNode parent = null;
        preorderTraversal(root, map, 0);

        // postorder traversal, and then calculate the root to leaf path
        // remove nodes if need
        // leaf node to current node sum
        //  TreeNode parent = null;
        postOrderTraversal(root, map, parent, limit, true);

        if(root.left == null && root.right == null)
            return null;

        return root;
    }

    /// root 1, left -99, right -99, limit 1
    private void preorderTraversal(TreeNode root, Dictionary<TreeNode, int[]> map, int sumRootToP)
    {
        if(root == null)
            return;

        var sum = sumRootToP + root.val; // -99

        var isLeaf =  root.left == null && root.right == null; // false

        var value = isLeaf? 1 : 0;
        map.Add(root, new int[]{sumRootToP + root.val, value}); // {-98, 1}

        preorderTraversal(root.left,  map, sum);
        preorderTraversal(root.right, map, sum);

Here is the article.

Mock interview: 731 My calendar

July 9, 2020

Here is the gist.

More content

I was thinking about how to add end time into my for loop, and end time should be sorted and mixed with start time as well.

To make things working, I should just using one Dictionary<int, int>. Do not separate start time from end time. And also we do not need to memorize all intervals with start time and end time. All we care about is how many intervals live in any time. We no longer need to record intervals inside class properties.

Clean and simple design is to use Dictionary<int, int>, key is start time or end time, value is the live interval count variable.

Stock investment: There is a lot of waste of opportunities

July 9, 2020

Introduction

It is my stock market research. I like to write a short research topic called hard working pays off.

Case study

I like to get up before 6:30 AM before market opens in pacific time zoom. I like to watch the market and see what I can do.

I worked on my questrade.com and also Ameritrade.com two portfolios. In first two hours, I saw the portfolio went up $200 dollars, and then in less than two hours, it went down to zero gains or $100 dollar loss instead.

What I like to do is to work hard, take those $200 dollars profit and sell those positions, and then quickly buy back when the gains are gone in two hours.

The market is not stable. Reopen economy does not go smoothly. The market is so volatile. I also do believe that the market will have a biggest drop very soon.

What I like to learn is how to be patient, and take it seriously. Take advantage of market swings daily over 5% on those stocks like ENBL, SABR. I like to learn how to make small profit daily or in a few days.

Hard work pays off. Even though ENBL and SABR are not stocks like TSLA, AMAZON. But I do believe that the hard working is important. Be patient is important. And also go with the flow. Take the market risk.

New York (CNN Business)In its first deal since the economic downturn caused by coronavirus, Berkshire Hathaway is purchasing natural gas transmission and storage assets from Dominion Energy in a deal worth nearly $10 billion.
Berkshire Hathaway (BRKA) will pay $4 billion in cash for the assets in addition to assuming $5.7 billion in debt from Dominion Energy (D), the energy company said Sunday.
Investors had been wondering whether the massive conglomerate owned by Warren Buffett would look to make new investments in light of the economic downturn, especially after the company said in May it had $137 billion in cash on its balance sheet.

My million dollar dream after stock market crashed bottom from March 20, 2020

July 5, 2020

Introduction

It is tough for me to learn and admit that I am the beginner of stock investor. I have to watch out for me, if I do not learn enough, I will make mistakes to cause me a lot of time to fix. I need to learn discipline myself, get up early, prepare, prepare, prepare. I learn much better from my mistakes instead of my success.

My million dollar dream

I have to learn that I have to give myself six months to twelve months to learn and understand USA business. I have to learn individual business, and how people work together to work with stock market.

So many things to learn

I just realize that there are so many things for me to learn. I have to find time from my busy schedule.

What makes a good candidate for Facebook phone screen?

July 5, 2020

Introduction

Life is so busy and I just finished struggle for hay fever, and also tough time to get rid of side effects of stock market. I got invited on a phone screen again, I noticed that I wasted so much times from January to May 20, 2020. What makes a good candidate for Facebook phone screen.

Good candidate

I have to learn how to write good content to show how I prepare. What is so important for me to train myself as a software programmer. I have so many things to work on even though I hold the same full time,  I can have more time to focus on foundation and make myself better a problem solver.

I am lucky to have the full time job, after two weeks vacation to recover my hay fever; one more week vacation to recover hay fever again. I did spend over 20 hours to watch what is sinusitis and how to take care of symptoms.

Now it is the important for me to learn to love those algorithm problem solving. People I meet and talk, and those algorithms I love to write and review, and Leetcode discuss post I like to write this time; I have new understanding my weakness, how to work on better reasoning for those hard level algorithms.

A lot of struggles and fight for the time, sit down and calm down to write some code for the idea.

Good candidate should write more about analysis and case study instead of real code. I do think that debugging, stress to fix the issue, and really trust those simple test case to train myself.

I am a good candidate

I like to write down why I am a good candidate. I like to solve at least 50 algorithms. I do believe that those 50 algorithms will bring me down to earth, stand on my feet, understand the basics of crafting skills.

What makes a good beginner in stock market?

July 5, 2020

Introduction

It is such a great topic for me to write. What is 7 things I like to be a beginner of stock investor. Really work hard my mistakes as a beginner, and look into how to fix it whenever I can.

My mistakes

I did set up over $12,000 positions when SPX above 3200, fully recovered my over $20,000 US/ Canadian dollars loss. I just purchased those stocks. Most of them I bought the first time in my life, and I had chance to learn those business.

Also I have to learn to deal with market losses as well.

I have to work hard and do some research, and put together to fix my mistakes. I saw the gains from $3000 US dollars to $1000 dollars since I held those positions I purchased at highest price.

I was afraid to miss out. I learn the behavior finance. This is such a great lesson for me to learn, and stay humble. Nothing can change, I can not hide as a naive stock investor.

I also am lucky to understand my personality. Fee stressed and anxiety. Learn to accept myself. I will fix the problem.

At least $1500 US dollars loss.

The loss is $1619.53 + 689.42 = $2308.95 US dollars.

I am the beginner to learn that my decision was wrong. I did not understand the market and high inflated price. I have to learn time the market, and get in when SPX is below at least 3000.

Stock trader: Prepare for a business day

July 5, 2020

Introduction

It is time for me to learn how to be a responsible trader. I prepare for Monday morning the market, and I just set up trades I like to execute before the market open.

My trades

What I did is to learn from technical analysis video over three hours in the Friday evening, and then I did average of SABR and ENBL last 7 days, based on the average of last 7 days, I set up trade those 300 SABR adn 600 ENBL to sell, and then will set up purchase after I get up.

I like to be a problem solver. I like to apply technical skills, based on my analysis the day price range above 5%, SABR and ENBL are best stocks for me how to learn from setbacks.
