Top 10 Terms Project Managers Use

Introduction

I need to learn the basics. I review all kinds of mistakes I made on Facebook onsite interviews. I did not send an email when I took the flight and notified the recruiter I just landed in San Francisco, checked in the hotel. I showed up rude to drink water when the interviewer introduced herself to me the first three minutes, left food on the table which are supposed to shared with the interviewer and interviewee. I need to learn and admit that first, I should start to learn things.

A Bear Market Checklist To Thriving In A Downturn

Here is the article I like to read.

Now that we have a good idea of where we are in the economic cycle, it’s always good to prepare for something before it happens. This is called “pre-mortem” versus “post-mortem.” You want to have a pre-mortem checklist for things such as:
  • What to do if you get into a car accident
  • What to do if your baby or toddler is choking
  • What to do if an intruder is breaking into your house
  • What to do if you’re having a heart attack
  • What to do if your spouse passes away suddenly
When disaster strikes, we often CANNOT think clearly. As a result, we tend to make suboptimal choices. With a pre-mortem checklist, we don’t have to think. Instead, we can follow instructions that were created when we were thinking clearly.
Thankfully, a downturn moves at a glacial pace in comparison to these above disasters. Therefore, we have plenty of time to take action. Unfortunately, because a downturn can take months to transpire, there’s often less of a sense of urgency.

Bear Markets Don’t Last Forever

Although going through a bear market is painful, the stock market has made money 95 percent of the time over rolling 10-year periods since 1926. Over a rolling 20-year period, it’s made money 100 percent of the time.
Unfortunately, we will all eventually run out of time. Running out of time is why I’ve put together a bull market and bear market checklist. Ideally, I want us to live our best lives possible all of the time.
Having to spend time to recoup losses is a terrible waste of time. As you get older and wealthier, you no longer want to worry about money anymore. All you want to do is spend time on what really matters.

This popular stock-market checklist from Citi says the bull is alive and well

Bianca Andreescu and my weight control

August 24, 2019

Introduction

I like to learn to be a fan for tennis player Bianca Andreescu. What I like to do is to spend hours to watch her play on youtube.com, and her interview. Most of important is for me to learn how to keep same weight as she does, 176 lb. Now I am 184 lb, I just lost 8 lb from 192 lb two months ago. I like to lose another 8 lbs so that my knee will feel better.

My 10 years career in Canada

August 24, 2019

Introduction

It is the first time I can hold a software programmer job lasting 10 years from 2010 to 2019. I like to write a short blog and look into what I should work on.

10 years career

I started to learn how to work on myself in terms of problem solving skills after 2015. I learn that there is need and wants. What I like to do is to focus on needs, not wants. I like to really enhance myself as a problem solver, algorithm and data structure practice really is a good choice for me to be employable as a software engineer.

I went to Amazon onsite in the city of Seattle on June 8, 2018. After that, I was thinking about how to find a medium size company so that I can learn more and get challenged. To find a job in Amazon or in USA is too challenging for me.

I went back to my daily work, and continued to work on algorithm and data structure practice. This August 2019, I went to Facebook onsite interview in MPK campus in California.

One thing I can control is to work on more algorithm and data structure practice. I can really push hard on this and make myself competitive on this area. I also like to share my experience, write on more topics on Leetcode.com.

I went to Amazon onsite on August 15, 2019, I was asked how you find time to solve so many algorithms. I solved 420 algorithm. It took me four years to practice from January 2015 to August 2019.

I went to Facebook onsite on August 20, I was told that since you work on Leetcode and solve a lot of algorithms. Have you solved the problem before? Should I change another algorithm.

Personal finance

Another thing I can work on is to learn how to manage my personal finance. I have to take consideration of how good I can manage money, living expenses and investment. It is very important for me to evaluate how big risk I can take and my asset I have.

Weight control

Another thing I have to learn and work on is to control my weight. I like to keep my weight under 180 lb. Always try to keep same weight as Canada top tennis player Bianca Andreescu same weight, 176 lb.

Coaches Corner: Interview with Coach Jim Madrigal

I like to read the article about Key Stephen's new coach. Here is the link.

Jermaine Jenkins: from college champ to Osaka's new coach

Here is the article I like to read.

In July of 2015, Jenkins joined Venus Williams's team as a hitting partner. During her time with Jenkins, Williams climbed back into the Top 5 and reached the finals of the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and the WTA Finals in 2017.

Jenkins also communicated with Serena Williams about his brother during her search for a post-motherhood hitting partner, which eventually led to the 23-time Grand Slam champion hiring Jarmere for her own team.

Behavior interview - guideline

I like to learn how to understand behavior interview, so I can go back to my daily work, and then try to apply those things at work.

This is a behavioral interview to gauge how well you will adapt in our environment. The questions will revolve around your past work and some of the challenging situations you’ve encountered. This interview is evaluating you on your leadership, maturity, and overall scope/technical depth of work.

  1. Motivations:
Aside from what your motives are, be ready to explain why. How have your motivations impacted your work?
  1. Conflict Resolution:
This is where you may be asked to discuss a disagreement. We want to understand your philosophy on tackling conflicts, thought process, and approach. Be clear on what the disagreement was, who was involved, how it was handled on your end, and what the end decision was.
  1. Empathy
The ability to understand your peers (especially in situations of disagreements) and work with them including people with more authority. How do you encounter 1-on-1’s with peers
  1. Growth:
Understanding how and what has contributed to your career growth. You may be asked to explain major mistakes you’ve learned from, or project failures, or risks you’ve taken that resulted in little to no impact.
  1. Dealing with Ambiguity
The ability to run with an initiative with limited information/resources. We’re looking to see how you’ve navigated your team through challenging situations and whether you could adapt in our unstructured (no red tape) environment

Key Evaluation areas - system design

your design must be scalable in a large environment like Facebook

Key Evaluation areas:
  1. Problem Exploration
    1. Ask questions! Ex: What is the underlying motivation of building “X”
    2. Gather requirements and clarify any uncertainties: Target users; # of users; amount of data to be handled; requests per second; etc.
    3. Attempt to define the problem and how “X” will be built (this will give you a roadmap to follow for remaining of interview)
  1. Design Approach
    1. High level discussion in regard to covering the main components (*providing reasons/logic behind why they are relevant)
    2. What are the different options to get to a solution
    3. HOW this product/system will impact other areas of the business
  1. Data Management
There’s a high likelihood the question you’re going to be given will have some facet of data management. Some areas to mention during the discussion:
    1. How will data be stored
    2. (If any) Define data entities
    3. Which technology is best to use; or, suggest which data storage solution is best and why
  1. Tradeoffs
    1. After discussing the pros/cons of each option; choose 1-2 methods to design up a solution.
    2. Explain why your making this choice and how it is right for the domain/service
    3. Make your tradeoff clear
  1. Deep Dive
Do a deep dive on some facet of the problem you feel comfortable with. This is where you can highlight your expertise in any one area. You will be assessed on your depth in “X” area. Discuss any additional concerns; how to prevent them; and your approach. (Its ok to go back and forth with your tradeoff if later you realize there is a more efficient method)
  1. Quantitative Analysis
This can be done towards the end or in between the discussions. Try to think quantitatively about how your design will work in reality - make some approximate calculations

Key components for coding interviews

August 24, 2019

Introduction

It is so important for me to learn lessons since I wrote bugs in my own code. Rotated sorted array, I practiced over 10 times, and I wrote various solutions. I was told to test the code, but I did not pay attention to the detail onsite. I documented my experience here.

Key components for coding interviews

KEY COMPONENTS for coding interviews:
  1. Communication
a.      Ask clarifying questions
b.      Gather requirements (if necessary)
c.       Show the interviewer you understand the problem
  1. A. Critical Thinking
    1. Be vocal, discuss your solution or method before coding (this will help you identify any gaps in the process)
    2. (If applicable) Discuss multiple solutions and alternative methods to solve
B. Problem Solving
    1. Use of appropriate data structures
    2. Optimize and speak about space and time complexity
  1. Coding
    1. Cleanliness of code; and is it executable
    2. Organization of code and capturing right logical structure
  1. Verification
    1. Go back and test your code!
    2. Consider test cases to prove your code is correct
    3. If you have bugs, step through your own logic to identify them and explain what the code is doing

I need to learn to be humble again

August 24, 2019

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. I chose to start personal finance research last November, and then learned that frugality should be my best choice, cut off all relative's emotional connections, focus on my own business. I do not want those depressed stuff and try to find ways to cut off. I do not want anything in my life, no material things, I can live happy and healthy and smart.

My email

I wrote an email to reflect on my thought process. I know that it is tough business world. No one will pay attention to my writing, since I like to write and express myself.

HI, xxx,

I read your email. It is such great to hear from you about the result about onsite interview. I definitely like the whole experience of interview, including final result. I am just hunger for success, and so happy to meet those hard working engineers in Facebook.

I wish that I could have impressed them with my curiosity, and quick-to-learn, sports-style problem solving and coding approach. It is very challenging job to work on big project like Instagram, ads team, work for Facebook in general. I am looking for the best opportunity, and also Facebook works so hard to identify who has potential. We all take calculated risk to figure out best for us.

My boss - owner of company XX xxxxxing sent the email once a few years ago with all kinds of paper piling on the table to the office, remind us to clean up, throw away things when we moved the office. He told me a few times how to work better with young people in the office.

I enjoy my current job, and also I enjoy to work on more algorithm and data structure practice,

Feel free to reach me any time if I have chance to be interviewed. I will be very happy to apply again.

Also if you can share me more about feedback, it will be great help for me as well.

Sincerely,

jianmin chen

Actionable Items

August 25, 2019 - 12:05 AM

It is so important for me to review my own thought process. I just reviewed the onsite interview, and then I noticed that I was so rude, in my thinking process; I did not send an email in Sunday August 18 or August 19 to notify the recruiter that I came to San Francisco as planned. I did not think for others, specially a big company to work together closely.

I decided to change the blog title from "Look for fair chance" to "I need to learn to be humble again".

I also decide to start to learn how to be a project manager through youtube.com. I like to be a person who knows how and what to communicate, and be able to allow people smart and successful people in Facebook feel comfortable to work closely with me.

I like to continue to advance my algorithm and data structure practice, and really make it my hobby and good topics for me to learn how to write as a writer.

My onsite short highlights - August 20, 2019

August 24, 2019

One of tasks is to write down the review, short highlights of my onsite interview with Facebook.

Short review

I learned that I wrote buggy code for rotated sorted array, index-out-of-range error in my last interview; I did ok with the scientist, PH.D., on graph search algorithm, serialization extended algorithm, the third interview; and then I did ok with the second system design, since I showed up prepared on system design interview, with notes of structure system design written down a piece of paper. I talked about functional requirement, non-function requirement, requirement not discussed.

Executable code is the goal. I thought about culture fit, my background, and one way is to make the algorithm and data structure problems harder. This will be last chance I can compete the job since all others will go for domain knowledge, not problem solving skills interview.

Email notification

August 24, 2019

Introduction

It is my favorite part of waiting for result. I never have got any offer last 9 years. I know that it takes time for me to learn how business world works. Wednesday is day off for summer MPK campus. Thursday morning I just got an email early in the morning.

Email notification

I was able to connect with the interviewer team and unfortunately, I was not able to get approval to move forward with an offer.  The volume of interviews we’ve been conducting combined with the quality of candidates that we’ve been talking to often forces us to make difficult decisions.  I'm sorry – I wish I had better news!! ☹

How to compete the senior software engineer position from Facebook?

August 23, 2019

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. I like to challenge myself to find best way to grow rich and build wealth. One of ways is to apply the senior software engineer position from Facebook this year.

How to compete the position?

First of all, it is tough to be selected as a candidate. I met a few managers in San Francisco, and they all told me that they like to be invited. I told them that you have to work hard, write a few show cases. They quickly asked me what I did, and how many of them.

I like to be a writer to work on this topic. I do think that I learn something from my two weeks preparation for system design.

Also it is most important to get connected to friends as well in Florida from 1999 to 2001. I like to learn from my friends' experience. Over 18 years time range, all of my friends are grown up with two kids to raise, worry about how to get their children best education in top universities.

What I did is to ask help from my old friend Tracy. She works for Google now, and she shared her tip on August 18, 2019. She told me that she went to a lot of interviews in Hong Kong, and then she had to practice again and again interview. She likes to draw the diagram about system design, I know her personality by hanging out back from 1999 to 2001. I should get myself more chance to practice as well.

Her tip definitely helped me to prepare system design interview for my August 20, 2019 onsite interview.

One thing I can think about is to find more role models for me to learn from. I think that it is also important for me to learn how to identify really good business opportunities in long run.

I need to watch out what I work on. Do not waste the time. Measure the risk and return on projects I choose to work on.

Actionable Items

I like to examine all areas I should work on to improve. One thing I can do is to work on more algorithm and data structure practice.

Introduction

It is my assignment to study new face - Bianca Andreescu. I also like to look into how I study a new player, how they succeed and advance their career.

Case study

I like to show case how I study a new player. I like to enhance my reading and also learn how to be a fun person myself. One way I choose is to study those professional tennis players. They are trained how to take interviews.

I choose to read wiki page first. Here is the page for me to ready.

Best team I met and things I learned on August 20, 2019

August 23, 2019

Introduction

It is the first time I learn how to work with so many engineers in one day from 10:20 AM to 3:45 PM. I had good time to meet so many talents in the world, and was so amazed to learn a few things in those interviews.

How to share?

I may sign confidential agreement. I just learned those interviewer names from survey after the interview. Facebook is such great company and also they work hard to advance management of human resource of recruiting. Young engineers work hard to make the experience super helpful as well.

Ken Ayers
Helder Dias
Lu Yu

I plan to study those interviewer's linkedin profiles and I should spend at least 30 minutes to read carefully.

What to share?

I just came back from Tuesday Facebook onsite interview from California MPK campus. I met over 8 interviewers and experience biggest social platform Facebook, and experienced excitement to work on the campus.

Schedule

Ideas

One of ideas is to celebrate my first Facebook onsite interview. I just could not believe that I do have to work hard to celebrate the onsite interview.

1. First, I like to use a Leetcode discuss post to celebrate my onsite interview. My failure opens door to my curiosity, and make every idea work. Even though it is not so rewarding if I try a new idea on onsite interview, and I should have acknowledged that the code will have index-out-of-range error, wrong answer.

Here is the link. Here is the idea I made it work, and I like to encourage myself to be a good engineer, test my own code.

33. Search in Rotated Sorted Array

Here is the link.

I had practice on binary search algorithm Rotated sorted array on pramp.com more than 10 times back in 2017. But I still could not clear the interview on 2019 August on this algorithm. I wrote the code with bugs, and then I did not pay attention to possible bugs like TLE, index-out-range, wrong answer.
What I like to do is to work on various ideas as possible this time, remove bias; Give every idea a chance to live, try to code it and make it work.
