How to build confidence through failures?

January 7, 2019

Introduction

I spent over 14 years in USA from 1996 to 2010. I like to write a blog called "How to build confidence through failures?".

Personal finance

I work on my personal finance research. One thing I find out is that I should work on my long term goal, grow rich and build wealth. It does not matter which country I choose to stay and live, I have to learn to stay humble, and push myself to learn so many things in the life.

A github called Landlord Julia

January 7, 2019

Introduction

It is a tough journey for me to be a landlord to serve young generation to attend Florida Atlantic University. I have so many feelings and worked so hard to maintain the place. I think that it is also a good idea to document my experience, push myself to learn and be a good manager.

A new repository

I like to create a github repository called Landlord Julia.

Case study: 3 hours home cleaning in Vancouver in last day of winter break in 2018

Feb. 18, 2019

Introduction

Follow up

Feb. 12, 2019

It is my personal finance research. I did spend time to find a cleaner from craiglist on Feb. 12 weekend, and I paid two hours cleaning service. The cleaner told me that she never knew so dirty the kitchen before.

I am so ashamed to evaluate myself as a project manager to rent the unit by myself. I do not learn the importance to get a professional cleaner help once a while; how to deal with renters and follow up with a professional cleaning each time after a renter moves out.

Learning to be a manager and work efficiently takes time. I need to write down my experience first.

Introduction

I started my personal finance research in Nov. 2018. After hundreds of hour study, I came out the idea to find citi bank statements, I looked up my closed citi bank credit card account online and then I found the product feature for download. It is so surprising that I can request the statements from 1996 to 2018. I got 12 statements and I like to push myself to analyze the purchase, and ask why? How many things are wrong and waste of money?

Case study

Here is my personal finance github folder. I also like to show the statement in the following.

I like to do a few case studies on this monthly statement. One is $384.00 dollars cost of private coaching of English.

I need to categorize the expenses. I drove to Orlando and visited a few theme parks with my mom.

One is about cost of Global Institute of LA $384.00 dollars. I spent money on private coach which costed me $25.00 dollars one hour, and I had some coach to show me how to improve my reading.

First of all, I need to learn how to be a frugal person back in 2000. And also I need to learn the value of $2,000 US dollars at that time. It can be used to purchase a home in the city of Yichun, jiang xi province. Compared to the salary I had in Shanghai from 94 to 96, my monthly salary is $100 US dollars in 1994, $200 us dollars in 1995.

I need to learn how to invest those money. In reality, I could not improve my English or my coding skills or my problem solving skills in 2000.

How to push myself to learn economics?

January 6, 2018

Introduction

It is time for me to push myself to learn basics of economics. I like to look into my investment sills, I have 401 K and IRA CD from 1999 to 2005 in USA, and after more than 17 years, the earning of those $22,000 401K, I only make less than $4,000 dollar net income.

I like to push myself to learn economics. I did case study on my purchase and sell log of VIGRX mutual fund. I did not have chance to learn how to make $7,000 us dollar from 2000 to 2018, I spent over 45 days to work on my personal finance, and then I had chance to review the transaction.

MLflow Infrastructure for the Complete ML Lifecycle Matei Zaharia Databricks

Here is the talk. 20 minutes or so.

Spark and Matei Zaharia

January 6, 2019

Introduction

I like to spend 20 minutes to look into the spark and also the professor who started this technology.

Here is 20 minutes talk provided by Matei.

From the article written by a computer professor - here is the link.

我为什么鼓励你读博士?

Here is the article link. The author is a computer profession, here is the link.

Arguments in Chinese to work on computer science PH.D. program.

Case study: 2000 Citibank credit card statements

January 6, 2019

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. I push myself to learn personal finance, and last Friday I found out that I can request statements from citi credit card from 1996 to 2018. My account was closed in 2017 since I did not use it more than 12 months. I only can request 12 statements and it takes 24 to 48 hours, so I will request statements from 1996 to 2017. It will take me some time to get all statements.

Case study

I have monthly mortgage payment $450.00, and also Ford Explorer car payment $398.00 us dollars. Here was my monthly statement on citi credit card.

  January 1, 2000    Monthly statement:  $477.85
  Feb. 22, 2000       Monthly statement:  $594.14
  Aug. 24, 2000      Monthly statement:  $361.00
  Nov. 22, 2000      Monthly statement:  $1182.82
  Dec. 22, 2000      Monthly statement:  $2046.50

Total: $4662.31

My analysis in 2019

I think that one of reasons I could not have personal finance success is that I chose to spend money I earned on personal vacation, clothing and vacation with my mom. I did not follow the principle of delay gratification.

I did not spend time to learn how to contribute to the community, the company I was working for, and also show support for next generation for better education and opportunities etc.

I did not show any concern about how hard the company tried to survive as a startup company.

Push hard on problem solving daily

January 5, 2019

Introduction

It is a new year 2019. I like to write some new year resolution. One of things I like to do is to challenge myself every day, I like to solve one medium algorithm every day.

Can I afford the practice?

As a project manager to my daily planning, I like to push myself hard and train myself daily on problem solving.

I miss those challenging algorithms and I really like to bring them into my daily routine.

Can I afford not to practice daily?

I am so busy to learn personal finance. I develop strong interest to learn how to build wealth and learn more about money, personal finance. The learning is so much challenging, I have to face reality to push myself to learn. New year's evening I cried and I learn that I also need to learn how to train myself mentally like sports training.

Back to algorithm and data structure problem solving, I really like to solve another 20 medium level algorithms in one week. I like to push myself and figure out ways to complete 20 algorithms in medium level, so I can figure out how to improve my problem solving skills in next level.

A written BUDGET

January 5, 2019

Introduction

It is time for me to push myself to come out a written budget for my vacation, monthly expense, my car repair, and my management to a rental property, and my management of my asset, and also my family as a single person and learn how to prevent abusive relationships from possible third parties.

A written budget

I have to evaluate the financial decision in terms of dollar amount. I like to set up the range from less than 100 dollars, 100 to 500 dollars, 500 to 1000 dollars, or above $1000 dollar.

I should never spend money any month more than $1200 dollars, for any reason. No matter how people put me under stress, abusive attack using languages etc.

I should never spend money more than $120/ day for shopping. For any reason, I have to make sure that I understand what is want and need.

If I have to make over $1000 dollars, then I will have to cut into multiple stages; A small step a time, and I have to allow myself to learn to ask questions, and do it several steps to allow myself to catch up.

Case study

I made the decision to close stock account in 2009. The money I lost in stock market is over $5,000 dollars. The idea came out and I made a decision without any written analysis. I have to spend over 40 hours to do research for amount over $5,000 dollar net income or loss, no matter what area I have to conduct research. I have to push myself to learn investment.

I have to push myself to analyze and then prepare for myself to review and audit my decision process in the future of 10 or 20 years or more.

Live on a written BUDGET

January 5, 2019

Introduction

I like to write the topic how I get into debt using credit card quickly in 2001,  a case study: 2001 China vacation. This is for my personal finance research and I just try to be honest and analyze from personal finance viewpoint.

Case study

I saw the video Proven Biblical Money Principles - Dave Ramsey. It is called plastic surgery to cut the credit card off. Only keep one credit card. I like to write down my lessons and how I should avoid the same mistakes again and again.

Live on a written BUDGET

"For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it?"  - Luke 14:28

I only spent one week vacation in China in 2001, I was under influence and quickly got in credit card debt using Citibank more than $4,000 US dollars amount.

It was hard for me to review the experience. I was under personal abusive attack from my three sisters and one brother. I cried, and could not sleep very well, but worst thing is that I made poor financial decision. I offered my relatives to a 3 day trip to Shanghai and I paid all the cost.

I was trusted by a startup company and paid by a fortune with top salary. I wasted time and money and wasted on the foolish trip to Shanghai.

I ended up purchasing in a brand new TV for gift over 2000 yuan, and cash gift, and also paid for my two sisters and two kids and my mom to Shanghai for a 3 day vacation. My mom even could not walk and just had her first stroke. My two sisters just made the plan and then I paid all the cost for hotel, train tickets and everything.

I reviewed those financial records, and understood that I was under influence and then I was a foolish relative to end up huge debt in one week vacation, and I have to put myself into $4000 US dollar debts using credit card.

Actionable Items

I could not understand that I am a single person, and also I am myself a family as well. I was abused my relatives and I did not learn that I need to get out of this relationship as quick as possible to protect my own family.

It is the first time I like to study how to research how to get along with relatives, how close I should stay close to relatives? How to be carefully not be manipulated by relatives? How can I not get in credit card debt or cash withdraw in China vacation?

I plan to order Citibank credit card statements from 1996 to 2018 every month, I like to analyze my spending carefully.

I also contacted Chase bank, but unfortunately Chase bank only provides last 7 years statements.

Talk about failures

January 5, 2019

Introduction

It is so challenging topic and I like to write about the topic first time. I do remember a few times through the phone interviews, do you get computer science PH.D. degree in 2008? I had to answer the question, I did not. That is the failure since I could not get the PH.D. degree starting from 2012 to 2016.

Year 2009 thoughts

I am doing my personal finance research. What I did is to look up my hard disk and try to find my personal finance statement.

I opened a new github repository called mental training

January 5, 2019

Introduction

It is a good idea for me to open a new github repository called mental training.

Here is the github link.

Motivation

It is the beginning of 2019. I like to start a journey to work on psychology mental training starting from sports.
The motivation starts from problem solving of my own housing problem, so I started to work on personal finance research. I also did case study and found out that a lot of times I had issues to learn how to deal with pressures, stress, how to handle relationship, money, work, time and my limited resource. How to work with relatives, friends, or other people and reduce my personal finance loss, loss of time and opportunity cost etc.
One study a time.

I cancelled Netflix membership today

January 5, 2019

Introduction

I was too busy and I did not have time to watch Netflix last two or three months. I decided to cancel membership today.

Why I should stop much early?

Follow up on Oct. 22, 2019
I did watch Suites a few seasons. I had good time to watch a few shows over years. But I found out that I could not afford the time to watch shows on Netflix. I need to work on my personal finance, and learn how to grow rich and build wealth. My time is running out. I am 53 years old but I do not learn how to invest on equities.

Jim Rohn: Habits That Will Change Your Life (Morning Motivation)

My Philosophy for Successful Living by Jim Rohn

Here is the article's link.

You will be paid for what you bring to the marketplace and what you become.
Formal education gets you a job, but self-education is what makes you rich.
The answer to solving your problems isn’t to be found by listing out the obstacles both real and perceived in the outside world, but instead by noticing the obstacles in your own thinking and approach.
Your personal income is determined primarily by your philosophy.
If you work hard on your job, you make a living. If you work hard on yourself, you can make a fortune.
Success is not something you pursue. Success is something that you attract by becoming an attractive person.
The way that you become rich is not by wishing your life were easier, but instead by focusing on making yourself better.
Achieving wealth and greatness can be distilled down to helping others.
If you search you can find good people, but you have to be committed to searching.
Rewarding people for small steps of progress is a key part in your ultimate success.
Be so busy giving others recognition that you don’t really need it for yourself.
Becoming a skilled communicator is one of the single best investments you can make in yourself.
One of the best ways of building a financial wall around your family is to have more than one skill and more than one language.
Profits are better than wages.
No matter what you are doing in life, it’s important that you learn the fundamentals or the foundation of a given job or task.
Taking the time to sit down and write out your goals for the present, the near future and the more remote future is a necessary part of transforming your life.
You can have all you want out of life if you endeavor to help others.
Those who do not contribute to society often find that they pay a price in the form of solitude.

Case study: Money is good for nothing unless you know the value of it by experience - Series 4 out of 10

January 4, 2019

Introduction

I called it big check syndrome. I make net income from 1999 to 2001 over $110,000 us dollars. But when I came to Canada in 2010, I borrowed against the home I own $18,000 dollar. I like to learn money is good.

Case study

I did my personal finance research on new year's day. I found out that mutual fund VIGRX I sold as a loss with $1000 dollar in 2002. If I keep it to 2018, the value of $3000 dollars will worth $10,000 us dollars in 2018. Here is the blog.

I learn the value of $1000 dollars loss, or value of original $3,000 dollars, with 18 years, I should learn how to make $7000 dollar profit in 18 years.

Case study: Money is good for nothing unless you know the value of it by experience - Series 3 out of 10

January 4, 2019

Introduction

It is my favorite quote related to knowing the value of money. I like to write the value of money by spending one week holiday break at home in 2018.

Case study

I spent time from Dec. 25 to January 1 in the city of Vancouver and also like to practice how to save money, doing personal finance research.

I did not go to any party or host any party. I drove less than 10 miles, I spent less than 100 dollars on grocery.

$15.00 dollar for a chicken
$10 dollar for lamb bone
$40 dollars for grocery of vegetables

I spent less than $100 dollars to celebrate Christmas and New year. I even skipped new year dinner to keep myself focus on personal finance research.

I learn the value of $100 dollars for a holiday, I think that I made good choice for me to learn personal finance.

Case study: Money is good for nothing unless you know the value of it by experience - Series 2 out of 10

January 4, 2019

Introduction

I am doing personal finance research. So I like to write my study notes. The quote is from THE ART OF MONEY GETTING by P. T. Barnum.

Know the value of passive income $6,000/ year

I have so many reasons to keep the condo running as a real estate owner. That is the only thing I own with some value from 2010 to 2018. It takes me a lot of time and stress for me to maintain the place and find renters. I like to write a blog on this topic called money is good for nothing unless you know the value of it by experience.

Case study

I like to work for the software programming job since it is exciting sometimes. I also get chance to learn how to improve my problem solving skills last 12 months. But I also have challenge to qualify to be a sponsor back in 2016.

I found out that I can sponsor one of my relatives using lonely Canadian program. I have to meet financial support minimum requirement. Because I can count rental income in USA, so I qualify the financial requirement to reach the minimum income to sponsor one adult.

I learn the value of $6,000 Canadian dollars of rental income. The value of $6,000 dollar in 2016 helps me to qualify to be a sponsor.

$6,000 Canadian dollars is $500 dollar/ month, or $400 us dollar/ month. I lowered the rent below the market since I learn that Chinese students know the value of $150/ month better than me, since I have a stable full time job last 9 years.

Case study: Money is good for nothing unless you know the value of it by experience - Series 1 out of 10

January 3, 2018

Introduction

Money is good for nothing unless you know the value of it by experience. I like to write a case study to support the argument.

Case study 1

In 1999, I supported my mom and paid for her condo in the city of Yichun, it costed me from $8,000 to $10,000 US dollars. Now it worth $100,000 US dollars in 2018. I can not claim any ownership but I learned the value of $8,000 US dollars.

I count my asset this January 1, 2018. My cash asset is less than $100,000 US dollars, I worked full time over 9 years in Canada, and also net income from 1999 to 2001 is over $110,000 US dollars.

Now I know the value of $8000 US dollars. It started from 300/ month as gift to my mom from January to December 1999, once my sister had $3000 US dollars, she paid 50% down payment for 890 square foot condo in the city of Yichun. And then she pushed me to pay the rest. 50% in 6 months.

I did not learn the value of $8,000 US dollar. a condo, a home, what that really means to a family and my mom.

Do What You Love, The Money Will Follow: Discovering Your Right Livelihood

Book review: The Art of Money Getting by P T Barnum

Here is the book review link.

PT Barnum believed wealth would naturally flow from good character
No one succeeds, Barnum asserts, without knowing their field inside out. His reflection on his 19th-century countrymen could be applied to people in any time and place: ‘As a nation, Americans are too superficial – they are striving to get rich quickly, and do not generally do their business as thoroughly as they should, but whoever excels all others in his own line, if his habits are good and his integrity undoubted, cannot fail to secure abundant patronage, and the wealth that naturally follows.’

Learn your own lessons

Even in Barnum’s time most successful business people were self-made, and the same is true today. He warned not to depend too much on other people’s capital, particularly inheritances. If anything, this ‘easy money’ will hold you back.
It may be convenient to be given or to borrow a load of money to start a business, but as Barnum notes: ‘Money is good for nothing unless you know the value of it by experience.’ The tycoon John Jacob Astor commented that it was more difficult for him to make his first thousand dollars than it was to accrue all his succeeding millions. But the lessons learned in creating the initial capital – self-denial, industry, perseverance, and patience – were priceless.
