Case study: 1999 citi credit card expense by month

Jan. 12, 2019

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. I got 2002 credit card statements from 1, 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, 12. I saw huge difference compared to 1999 expense. I did not have a job in 2002, and I was a home maker.

Case study

I like to push myself to learn how bad it is to waste money on clothing, furniture, travel, restaurant, and all material stuff. I should be able to cut down expense on credit card to $200/ month, since I paid monthly car installment $395/ month, $495/ month for mortgage, and property tax using personal check, and also paid my mom very little, my sister only can save up to $2900 us dollar until 2000 August, that is time my sister can pay 50% for a condo 890 square foot, 500 yuan/ square foot.

I actually did not do finance analysis in 1999, I even did not print out credit card monthly statement, and did some basic calculation of how many dollars I spent on clothing and expenses. I did not push myself to learn how to analyze and make sound decisions what to purchase with so many income in my life the first time.

Here is the dollar amount by month.

Here is the graph of monthly expense.

Actionable Items

I did some analysis. Since I threw away all returned checks from 1996 to 2002 after I got laid off in 2001. I could not find how much I sent to my mom before 1999 December. But based on a note from my sister, she only could save $300 dollars up to year 2000 January.

I did not learn how to budget and plan, work with my elder sisters together to come out a plan for the purchase.

I spent $10,000 US dollars on credit card, even though I purchased a brand new Ford Explorer in March 1999, a home in August 1999. I already had problems not to control expenses.

I purchased so many clothes. I did check 1998 statements, I already spent hundreds on clothing in 1998.

Facts to review

It is part of my personal finance research. I like to evaluate how/ who should pay responsibility of my personal finance problems in 2018.

I was baptized with my mom in 2002. But in 1999, I was not a Christian. I did not have religion and I also did not have strong belief what I should follow and obey.

I like to get together some facts for me to review, and make some judgement about my behaviors, and myself as a human being, an aunt, a daughter, a student, and a single woman in her early 30s.

1. In 1999, my mom was retired, she was 66 years old. Her retired income may be less than 200 yuan/ month, 30 US dollar/ month.

2. My salary before tax was $47,000 us dollar a year from Dec. 1998 to Dec. 1999. I was in optional practical training.

3. This was the firs full time job I had in my life with huge income I made in my career starting from 1988.

4. I like to measure my emotional intelligent by how I spend and share in 1999. It seemed to me that my emotional intelligent is below average. I did not learn the basics of booking, and also tried to control small expense purchase. A few small expense can quickly be added up to thousands dollars, specially in clothing purchase.

Weekly contest 119

Jan. 12, 2019

Introduction

It is my favorite weekly contest. I played the contest and had good time. I learned a few things through the contest. I like to document my performance as usual.

My performance

I solved the third algorithm in the contest, 7:00 PM, my ranking at 7:00 PM I checked was 1018/ 3194. I solved the second algorithm in the contest, 7:09 PM, my ranking was 279/ 3223. I had timeout issue on the first algorithm, I looked up my blog, searched SortedDictionary, I like to use minimum heap, timeout issue. After the contest, I decided to use counting sort, I got timeout issue again. I checked one of discuss, and then wrote the one to pass online judge.

Here is my discuss link for third algorithm.

Here is my discuss link for second algorithm.

After the contest

I solved the first algorithm with a solution to fix timeout bug, I submitted at 8:20 PM. 20 minutes after the end of contest 8:00 PM.

Here is my discuss link for first algorithm.

I wrote two solutions for the first algorithm, I will document the practice as well later.

Saving $20K a year

Jan. 12, 2019

Introduction

It is challenging for me to save in Canada from 2010 to 2018. I have to push myself and try to save $20,000 a year in 2019. I like to work on the research on this area. Here is the article. Better link is here to read.

Ideas to save

I need to write down each idea, and then work on the area.

1. Get nitty gritty with your spending and make a plan
2. Set up automatic transfers
3. Be brutal about online subscriptions
4. Avoid your spending traps
5. Replace a costly habit
6. Don't buy new clothes for a year
7. Reconsider tasks you have outsourced
8. Be strategic about your meals
9. Change your insurance plan
10. Think differently about celebrations
11. Set up an Acorn account

Liquidity Ratios

Here is the article I like to read.

My liquid asset

My understanding of liquid asset is the asset in my checking and saving account. I like to case study all my liquid asset from 1988 to 2018 in Chinese yuan, US dollars, Canadian dollars.

How I crushed IELTS test in 2008? Two at least 7.0, all above 5.0

January 12, 2019

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. I came cross my 2008 IELTS test paper work and I like to write an article to share my experience, and also I need to write down lesson I learned from the challenges.

Case study

Let me first to write down three IELTS test results, and one appeal case.

                         Listening     Reading   Writing   Speaking    Average
2008 June           6.5             7.5           5.5          6.5                 6.5
2008 July            6.0             6.5           5.5           6.5                6.0
2008 August       7.0             5.5           6.0          7.5                 6.5

Lessons learned - No. 1

My writing scores are not so good comparing to other three sections. Two times are scoring 5.5, last one is 6.0. I need to work on my writing skills. One thing I can do is to keep writing until I feel tired.

I need to push myself to write every day. There is no job in the world requiring me to write every day. No one will spend time to read what I read. But I need to push myself to learn and communicate with myself, how I can think and work better in the business world.

That is one of reasons I push myself to write blogs every day in English. Also I learn to document my journey for me to figure out how to find my own weakness in thinking process. I like to remove biases in my thinking process and analytical process.

It is a lonely journey but while I am staying at home office learning personal finance, it is also good chore for me to write a few blogs to share the world.

Lessons Learned - No. 2

I did not take any tutoring in 2008. What I did is to work on past exams every day. I practiced full time in three months. I was reminded in the last test, and I was friendly reminded to take training course through test center.

From other viewpoint, I need to reduce the risk and seek advice at the very beginning from the test center. One thing I have to push myself is openly to communicate what I want and what I like to do. Immigration is biggest decision, I should take it more seriously and work with the test center. It is so important for me to show my determination, but sometimes I need to learn how to work with professionals as early as possible.

I surprised the test center since I went to test center every month to take a test. I also spent $160 dollar to appeal for the test result of speaking after the second test.

I need to score two four, two three in IELTS test result for immigration purpose. Score above 7 counts 4, score above 5 counts 3.

I had this challenging to get minimum points for immigration to Canada as a single person, no relative in Canada, no education in Canada.

Lessons Learned - No. 3

I was lucky to get 7.5 in speaking, since I had good communication with the test center. But in other viewpoint, I have to be gratitude to the people in my life. Sometimes I did make it to Canada by luck to have one highest IELTS test with score 14 points. Later, I had to file appeal for leave from Jan. to Sept. 2009.

I learned that immigration to Canada is no longer to make money and have a better life, it is something more I can do. I need to find a place to accept me as an immigrant first, specially after I turned 40 years old. I need to hold on my education, my investment, my family planning, and my mom and my relatives behind.

I should treat people with respect, no matter what they do. Be a good citizen, saving my money, and treat people with fairness.

Follow up

July 28, 2022
I did a good job to write down this blog. I just could not believe that I had dedication of ten months to work on Canada immigration process. Three months to prepare for IELTS test, and then another nine month for Canada appeal case for denied application.

I did learn so many things from my blogging experience. I used to be an engineer, and a teacher, and self-employed, and also full time programmer last 12 years in Canada.

Introduction

It is my research how to develop with more strength to be a good problem solver on algorithm and data structure. I like to compare myself with another player on Leetcode.com, so I can expect that how much room I can improve, in terms of weekly contest performance, and how to plan to schedule my time on practice, and also contribution to the tech community.

Comparison

Here is the comparison. I like to show my profile and another player together.

Being a good blogger and also learn from others as well

Introduction

I start to practice coding in 2019 and try to push myself to finish another 200 medium level algorithm. I also follow others and write some comment based on my practice.

Sudoku solver

Here is my comment I wrote on the blog of a casual coder.

Jianmin ChenJanuary 11, 2019 at 11:49 AM

Thank you for sharing.

I really like the ideas in your implementation. I enumerate one by one in the following:

1. Preprocess all rows and columns and quadrants into data structure, O(1) to look up if the digit is available for next empty slot;
2. index variable from 0 to 80 is used to track the progress of depth first search, help to identify base case;
3. Step 1 is also very efficient since every element with digit values in the board will be added once at the beginning.

I make some minor changes and add some comment to help follow the calculation.

Hashtable -> HashSet
variable names:
rows -> rowDigits
cols -> colDigits

I rewrote the code and practice one more time, also I shared on Leetcode discuss.

https://leetcode.com/problems/sudoku-solver/discuss/217272/C-One-more-elegant-solution

One more comment

  1. One more comment, I took some time to figure out the calculation and add some comment to help people to read the code of function AddNumber(...)
    ///
    /// The row and column should not include same digit more than once; quadrant as well.
    ///
    private static bool AddNumber(int index,
    int number,
    HashSet[] rows,
    HashSet[] cols,
    HashSet[] quadrants)
    {
    // one row has 9 columns
    int r = index / 9;
    int c = index % 9;

    // there are three rows and three columns quadrants.
    // each row will have 27 elements
    // each quadrant will have 9 elements
    // First row quadrant
    // Quadrant1 | Quadrant2 | Quadrant3
    // by index
    // 0 - 8 | 9 - 17 | 18 - 26
    // by column
    // 0 1 2 | 3 4 5 | 6 7 8

    int q = (index / 27) * 3 + (index % 9) / 3;

    if (!rows[r].Contains(number) &&
    !cols[c].Contains(number) &&
    !quadrants[q].Contains(number))
    {
    rows[r].Add(number);
    cols[c].Add(number);

    quadrants[q].Add(number);

    return true;
    }

Case study: 1999 citi credit card statement analysis

Jan. 12, 2019

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. I like to figure out what my thought process in 1999, twenty years younger. What are my major problems and what I should learn from those mistakes, things I did correct.

Case study

First I like to review the expense by store, and also the graph of amount of purchase.

The graph is the following.

Actionable Items

I worked for a startup company called Bank Atlantic Entertainment, later called online gaming.

I spent vacation to San Diego, airline ticket $450.00 dollars for 5 days. I spent vacation to New York as well, I visited word trade center in New York.

The clothing over $1900 dollar is not necessary. I should limit to $200 dollars for a year.

One of ideas is to argue to myself, how to save $5,000 dollars from those $10,000 dollars. How to entertain myself without spending money. I have 750 square foot home and I worked full time, most of time I did not have time to stay at home.

Every week I went to Ross store, and also I made purchase every week almost.

I also talked to my relatives and my mom every week, the long distance call expense is more than $360.00 US dollars. I remembered one month I spent over $250 US dollars for long distance call, every minutes is over 60 cents in US dollars.

I need to study my own behavior, the activities I enjoy, and the ability I can learn and what are the most weakness in my finance knowledge.

I spent over 300 times purchases. Right now I did not have any receipt. I cannot identify the items and the price. But that is a lot of time to visit store and go shopping.

How to coach younger myself in 1999?

I had a brand new  Ford Explorer, I purchased in March 1999. I can get any cloth in less than one hour.

First of all, I should not purchase a brand new car since my saving is less than $10,000 dollars.

I made a brand new Ford Explorer in March, 1999. And I purchase a condo in August in 1999.
Here is my purchase of car documented in my blog. Here is the condo purchased documented in my blog.

After I purchased the home in August, 1999, my saving was less than $3000 us dollars. I should cut down my expenses immediately.

Case study: 1999 citi credit card statements

January 11, 2019

Introduction

It takes me less than three hours to come out the expense summary based on citi bank credit card statements. I like to do a case study and see how many issues in my expenses.

Case study

Here is my github personal finance folder. This is the first time I came out the total of clothing cost in 1999. Again it is close to $2,000 us dollars.

I just could not believe that small amount purchases can be added up to thousands dollars so quickly. It is definitely surprising that I purchased $2,000 dollars a year in 1999, 2000, 2001. All three year purchase of clothing can easily be added up to $6,000 US dollars.

Now I know that my most waste of money is on those clothing purchase. I made the same mistake from 2010 to 2017.

When I saw the market crashed in 2002, my mutual fund VIGRX from $3000 original purchase went down $2,000 dollars, I sold it. But how about those clothing, those are extra clothings. I should consider that it is loss of money I earn as well.

Summary by categories

It is so surprising that I spent almost $900/ month on credit card, I also paid $390/ month for car installment, and $490 for mortgage and condo association, $200 installation monthly for black leather sofa. I had extra bedroom empty and I lived in a two bedroom home.

I definitely need to learn how to save money. I drove less than 3 miles from home to office. That is the reason I spent $257 dollars on gas purchase.

Biggest purchase is $1205 projection TV with 56 inches. I paid mom's ticket from Beijing to Florida around $500 dollars.

Technical tips

I just could not believe that there are over 300 purchase transactions. I did one by one to figure out what store and update store category. After 30 minutes I found out that it is too time consuming, instead I just use Excel column filter "Contains", and then quickly process the same store in once.

It is not too difficult to process credit card statements pdf files and come out the summary report using Excel sheet.

Actionable Items

I need to build good personal finance habits. Here are things I like to do.

1. Keep all receipts;
2. Download all credit cards statement at the end of year;
3. Calculate the total of expenses by month, by year, by category;
4. It is not too difficult for me to learn how to use Excel sheet back in 1999.
5. Keep all clothing shopping receipts.

I just could not believe that I made purchase book over $190.00 dollars as well in 1999.

My thought after 20 years

I think that I should discipline myself and limit to myself with $100.00 dollars on wants, not needs. That means $1200 US Dollars for the whole year.

I was not a permanent resident in USA back in 1999. I worked using H1-B visa. I filed H1-B in 1999 by myself to save money. But I also needed to learn how to learn how to save and invest right away, once I had a full time job with $47,000 US dollar/ year, I need to push myself to learn how to invest, personal finance.

Over 7,000 us dollars on the credit card I should not spend at all. I think this way in 2019, January 1, 11:45 PM. Those expenses are not my needs.

Follow up

January 24, 2020

I should think about how much it costs to purchase a home in the city of Shanghai in 1999. I should think about how to save all those cashes, and then put into growth index fund over 20 years.

Dental dilemma

January 11, 2019

Introduction

It was so painful experience from Nov. 17 to January 8. I had an upper tooth right side third next to last. Every day is bleeding, pain, and milky every hour on January 8. I finally got the date to my dentist appointment in the city of Vancouver.

Dental dilemma

The dentist asked me two options. Extra the tooth or deep cleaning the tooth. I will have to deep clean the tooth every 4 - 6 months.

I asked the price, the assistant told me that it costs $120 Canadian dollars for extraction, $90 dollars for half hour deep cleaning.

I had a tooth with gum surgery, and then so many infections last two years without deep cleaning, since my previous dentist referred me to periodontist. I did not go. Last Nov., the infection was so severe, I finally got the tooth extracted.

Should I let it stay live?

I decided to do two tooth deep cleaning. I just could not believe that those two teeth are not able to stand any biting. Shaking like earthquake when it is infected with the gum.

I like to write a blog to memorize so many sufferings I experience last two months.

Home care just cannot beat the professional dentist in Vancouver.

Case study: 2014 credit report in USA

January 10, 2019

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. I also like to figure out in detail how to read a credit report, how to find things to work on in terms of personal finance research. I like to do case study on each of credit reports I got. In total I got three credit reports in 2014.

Case study

I like the way credit report showing the data. I like to share my thoughts and write down here as well.

I should spend at least one hour every year on my credit report in USA and Canada. But I did not do it at all.

I like to present data in any kind of format. I like to see if I can make improvements on those formats presented in credit report.

Stay tuned.

Case study: citibank credit card 1999 statements

January 10, 2019

Introduction

Today I got an email from citibank that my 1999 12 months statements are available since I requested two days ago. I quickly went over monthly expenses and big item purchase. I was so surprised that I also spent a lot on clothing as well. 2000 and 2001 I spent near $3,000 us dollars on clothings, and in 1999 I may spend over $1,000 as well.

Case study

I will find time to do a full report by myself first. I could not believe that I waste so much money on those big purchase items. I will name them this time and figure out how to delay gratification.

My analysis

I like to write down some analysis based on my study. I have 90 minutes to perform four algorithms in the contest, but I never have chance to solve last algorithm.

I still have problems to solve the first easy/ medium level algorithm. Even I can solve the medium level algorithm, it takes me extra time since I am not good enough to find elegant solution in the contest.

I learn a lot in the contest and also after the contest. I hope that I can write next performance review in 3 months with better results.

Case study: Ameritrade accounts

January 10, 2019

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. I was so worry in 2008 and 2009, my 401K and stock account lost over $6,000 dollars, so I closed those Scottrade accounts in 2010 March. Last week I sent an email to ask how I can reopen those accounts.

Case study

I got an email from Ameritrade that my accounts are still open. I thought that my accounts are closed.

Credit report review

January 10, 2019

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. I came cross credit report of 2014, and I was so surprised that I only have year 2014 credit report. I tried to identify what credit card I put on in 2001 Shanghai vacation, I got huge credit card debt but I could not find which credit card I used. I called Capital one but the bank could not find my account. I looked up 2014 credit report and I found the credit card, but it was opened in 2004.

Get credit reports

One thing I can do is to build good habit. I should get credit report every year in United States and also in Canada.

I should build routine to do regular checks with my credit card, assets, and all other reports etc.

Introduction

It is the first time I learned the principle called "Standing in your truth". The interview is here to watch. I like to spend 20 - 30 minutes on this principle and also write a blog on this topic.

Case study: 2000 citi credit card statements clothing only

January 9, 2019

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. I like to look into and find some research on this clothing shopping over $1900 us dollars in 2000 alone.

My case study

Here are the transactions.

Monthly analysis

It is Florida I lived in 2000. I even can wear a free T-shirt all year long. I just could not believe that I made so much purchase.

Personal finance research is ugly business. I dig into so many things and I just could not help to push myself to learn from those lessons.

It takes 19 years to learn

January 9, 2019

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. I was so busy last winter break after Christmas. I did not have any party to go. My good friend in SJTU went to Europe for family vacation, and I had to spend time to chat one hour with my Florida Atlantic University friend as well. I have Chinese friends and their family working in Seattle, they work for Google and Amazon.

It takes 19 years to learn

I started my personal finance research in November 2018. I continuously work on my research, and after hundreds of hour work, I push myself to find more things to work on. I finally searched citi bank credit card online access and there is a feature in citi bank credit card to request statement from 1996 to 2018.

This is the first time I downloaded all statements, and then I exported to Excel sheet, applied some simple scripts and generated the pivot table. Here is the blog I documented my experience this morning. I took a sick day to go for dental appointment.

I purchased over $1900 US dollar clothing alone in 2000. I just could not believe that.

I am always a good friend to all my past classmates. But we do not communicate with personal finance in detail. I tried to figure out why I have to work since my tooth are falling out since periodontics.

Since last few years I talked about social housing in Canada, I felt so ashamed to myself. I decided to do some research and figure out what is the real reason with my situation. My friend talked to me in 2017 summer.

One of my good friend from SJTU told me that I should not work on algorithm and data structure practice, she advised me in May 2018. I should not go for those challenging positions. I thought about it and I argued to myself. So that is one of reasons I decided to start my personal finance research.

Here is year 2000 citi credit card statements and my analysis. I just could not believe that I was such stupid in my purchase. In 2014, I went to Florida and threw so many clothes with good quality and some of them I even only wear two or three times into garbage can. I did not count how much I spent on cloths at all.

Here is my personal finance github.

My argument

If I do not learn the value of dollar, then there is no point to make more money. Since I will waste the money even I make more money from my job and investment.

I like to be a minimalist.

January 10, 2019 11:32 PM
If I was so smart like I am in 2019 back in 2000. I will cut all expenses to minimum. Do not offer my mom an international trip. Do not spend on clothing. Those two items will save $2600 US dollars. That is one bedroom condo in the city of Yichun. Or I will invest in Vanguard growth index fund for $3000 US dollar purchase.

Case study: My citi bank 2000 12 months statements - Series 1 of 6

January 9, 2019

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. Once I got all statements I like to do some personal finance research on those statements. I like to write a blog to analyze and count how many mistakes I made in those finance decisions.

Case study

I like to push myself to learn personal finance, and also I like to figure out what are my values. Why I am still the same person after 18 years.

Can personal finance research help me to learn how to build wealth? I need to grow up and be more responsible. I should step out as a single person and learn how to make a good living like others with a family to support, like a single mom to support a daughter.

Here is the github folder.

Biggest mistake

I did not purchase any second hand clothing; second hand furniture. Even though my manager in 2000 told me that his mom helped me to purchase past perfect furniture to save a lot of money. I still chose to purchase thousand dollars cloth.

I think that my attitude towards money, compassionate to others are problematic. That is the reason I did not learn how to invest money at all.

I had two sisters, one is a physician and one is high school teacher in the city of Yichun at that time. I was told by my sister that my monthly income over $5,000 US dollars is more than all doctors salary together in her office.

I was too naive and wasted all those money on clothing. I even did not know how much I spent on clothing until today, 19 years later.

Steps to analyze

First copy all monthly statements to excel sheet.

For each row, google search Excel script to get last 6 chars in the row. Here is the article. I used the script "=RIGHT(A1, 4)";

For all columns with dollar value, convert text to value. Here is the article to get help.

Open a new tab in Excel sheet, create a pivot table to do analysis.

Cast study: Date my RRSP - First $1,800 contribution

One thing I learned from my personal research is the biggest mistake I found in 2019 new year day. I spent whole day to do personal finance research, I found the mistake.

Case study: RBC bank and my date with mortgage

January 8, 2019

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. I came cross the article called cross border mortgage in google search. So I visited RBC bank today. I like to date my money, and try to get some mortgage advice.

Bank willing to work with US asset

I am banking with Scotia bank. I set an appointment with scotia bank and tried to sell RRSP fund and plan to purchase Scotia index fund. I like to get into index fund for next 12 months. I need to learn to watch the market and discipline my behavior. I did personal finance research and then I found out that I sold VIGRX in 2002 and then totally forgot it.

I am a single person but I should try to make opportunities for me to date my money, so I can learn from bank mortgage specialist and new graduate from top universities in Canada who works for those banks.

I know that the market is too high and a lot of people gambling the real estate. I should time the market and now it is too late.

Paper work to prepare

1. Last three month USA chase bank statements for my rental
2. My US asset last three month statements
3. My Canada asset last three month statements
4. My Property tax and condo association fee for rental property, rental income.
5. My social security in USA and other
6. 2016 T1 General

Having fun to date my money

January 8, 2019

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. I did study my three transactions to purchase Canadian dollars and US dollars in 2010 and 2017. I found out that I have to push myself to learn Canada economy and pay attention to the Canadian dollar value, and also watch market value carefully.

My interest

I have to learn basics of finance and market. One way is to date my money. I should go out to try to purchase small amount of US dollars from 2010 to 2018 at least once a year, so I can meet people in the market.

In December 2018, I also sold some US dollars in cash, I got some Canadian dollars. It is my first date.

In December 2018, I wrote a first US chase bank to myself first time after 2010 April. I wrote a $3,000 US dollars and then deposited into my Scotia bank US dollar saving account. I name it my second date to my money.

Jekyll for blogging

  • fork这个项目在Github上,点击右上角的Fork按钮;

  • 将项目名称改成用户名+.github.io ,例如 :cnmukewang.github.io;

  • 修改_config.yml配置一下;

Here is the link.

Case study: 1996 to 2018 December expenses

January 7, 2019

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. I like to do a case study for every year December expense analysis from 1996 to 2018. It is my personal expenses, but through those transactions, I like to push myself to learn how to analyze my career growth, my financial status, and also write down mistakes.

Case study

How to serve my mom better with less expenses in year 2000?

January 7, 2019

Introduction

I like to write a blog to help me do research how to serve my mom better if I have chance. I like to conduct research based on my case study of 2000 December citi bank credit card statement. I spent over $2000 us dollar for one month to live with my mom, I also need to pay $450 for mortgage and $398 for car monthly installation.

How to serve better and spend less money?
