Sharesight - how to catch $3600 opportunity VAB swing?

April 13, 2020

Introduction

It is not too difficult for a long term investor to learn basic day trading technique. I like to demonstrate how to work on VAB.TO from March 10 to March 16 over $3600 swing, and how to apply risk management technique, set order to trigger sell below 25% of highest point, and then get back in the first rebound. The goal is to take advantage of high volatility, buy low and sell high, and break even quickly in bear market.

Case study

I just created sharesight account, and then I also run holdings VAB.TO in the last 3 months.

Actionable Items

It is time for me to learn how to apply day trading techniques. Usually people use penny stock to trade because of its high volatility. But in market swing in 2020, VAB.TO swinged more than 10%.

After the market peak on Feb. 20, 2020, I only sold VAB.TO $7670.00. I sold 250 shares VAB.TO on Feb. 6, 2020.

Actionable Items

April 14, 2020

Actually I should time the market, sell 90% of positions of VAB.TO under 25% (highest - bookvalue) *75%) highest position; The reason to keep 10% is for me to track VAB.TO and learn quickly when to get back in to purchase when the price hits the bottom.

$5000 dollar cost to choose to dive into bear market - Victoria TFSA portfolio

April 12, 2020

Introduction

It is hard to time the market. I chose to go for the bear market and now my Victoria TFSA portofolio has $5000 dollars from all time high this February 2020. I like to look into opportunity for me to gain those $5000 in bear market.

Read more about business

I do think that one of ideas is to study day trader, so that I can observe better and find opportunities in stock market. Another area is to study more about business, how many business should I learn and look into. So many problem solvers will solve those company problems one by one, one day a time.

Victoria TFSA portfolio - How to find opportunities in bear market?

April 12, 2020

Introduction

It is my high standard requirement. I like to challenge myself and seek the opportunity to increase my portfolio value $5000.00 dollars.

Case study

I have market value gain before  the first circuit break around $2700 dollars, now on April 10, 2020, I have market value loss around $2200 dollars. So the gap is around $5000 dollars.

I just did Victoria balance history review, and also VAB.TO $3600 opportunity loss because I was lazy and did not take trade seriously on March 10, 2020 morning.

I should get up 6:00 AM, and stayed in front of computer, and track my portfolio 30 minutes to 60 minutes through those one month time from Feb. 26 to March 26.

How to find opportunities?

Coronavirus is still the biggest issue for global economy. Trump president likes to open USA economy before May 1, rolling base. What are the challenges? over 10 million people lose job, and people cannot pay rent, mortgage, and also a lot of issues.

$3600 dollars opportunity cost in less than 10 days - Coronavirus

April 12, 2020

Introduction

It is the opportunity for me to take profit in less than 10 days with $3600 dollars. I like to case study on this position.

Case study

March 10, gain $1034 dollars,
March 18, loss $2643.12 dollars,

If I learn how to do day trading, I will sell high on March 10, and then purchas VAB.TO on March 18, and then profit will be $3677.00 dollars.

Lesson learned

I think that I should learn basics of day trading, so that as a long term investor, I can understand what is normal price of VAB.TO. When the market went crazy from March 10 to March 18, I can easily make $3677 dollars profit.

I remembered that I woke up around 6:00 AM in the morning, and surprised that my bond has profit based on my mobile Jstock on March 10, 2020. I checked the gain near $1500 dollars.

Victoria TFSA portofolio - balance history

April 12, 2020

Introduction

I designed my Victoria TFSA portofolio, and the risk management is based on 30% down risk since 60% equity in the balanced portofolio. But in reality the market down swing 15% is much worse to me, and almost I felt the whole world will end and I need to get out. So it is important for me to think in terms of percentage loss of Victoria portfolio.

Case study

I finally learned how to work with Questrade.com balance history and put together day by day into Excel sheet. Here is my final version of balance history from June 1 2019 to April 12, 2020.

My story of bear market

I like to say that I panic and like to sell on March 16, 2020. And I learned to calm down, do not let my emotion take control. After three days market swing up from March 25 to March 27, I felt that I gained over $4,000 without doing anything,  I decided to purchase oil stock on March 27, 2020.

Timeline

I have to learn how to read my own emotions to hold Victoria portfolio starting from June 2019.

It started party time mood from 12/1/2019 to Feb. 19, 2019.

Feb. 19, 2020  market gain 2.9% <- I like to have party, share good news to every one. Talk to every one about stock

Get nervous, I like to get out. Sell 50% of my equities from March 12 to March 23, 2020.

March 16, 2020 market losses -15% <- I just could not calm down. Think about selling 50% of equity, from $30,000 Canadian dollars to $15,000 dollars <- risk aversion

April 10, 2020 market losses -3.48% <- piece of cake, I learned how market works. Bear market is so challenging, but I should make a few more bets.

Positions on April 12, 2020

My rebalance history

Buy low and sell high, that is the game of investment.

I did some transaction in five days:

No.2 Feb. 6, 2020 - buy $13,000 dollars equity fund - transfer money from US banks

No. 3 March 6, 2020 - SPX went down over 15%, all 30% gains from June 2019 to Feb. 2020 is gone. Buy some equity fund.
    VFV.TO  $1400 purchase

No. 4 March 12, 2020 - SPX went down another 20%.
    VFV.TO  $742.56 purchase

No. 5 March 23, 2020 - SPX went down
    VDU.TO $1060.40 purchase

No. 5 March 27, 2020 - buy oil stocks $2000 dollars

Business plan for my USA IRA portfolio Corona

April 12, 2020

Introduction

I chose to be a passive investor, long term investor. And I tried to simplify my investment plan, only invest three ETFs with balanced portfolio for my USA IRA account. But I changed the mind and built up Corona portfolio. I need to catch up and write a business plan for this near $1500 US dollar portfolio.

Business plan

I like to write down the business plan, what rules should I follow as a long term investor. What should I work on in order to make this investment great experience.

I will add more detail later.

Here is the blog about my purchase.
Here is the link to access my purchase of Ford and GE stocks.

I set up jstock portfolio on my mobile phone.

Actionable Items

April 14, 2020

I have to write down why business plan is so important for me as a long term investor. After my careful study of my 2001 stock purchase, I purchased 10 share with $66/ share exactly on Sept. 11, 2001. If I hold the stocks, from 2010 to 2019, those 10 shares will be 10 times more. The market value will be at least $6600 dollars. I asked myself what is going on with me as an investor.

I do believe that around 2005 Amtrust offered 5.0% interest, after 4 years or so, I decided to sell MSFT stocks and then moved the fund to Amtrust 5.0% interest CD. I am not so sure, since I did not write down any business plan for my 2001 stock purchase. I did not save all brokage firm statements.

As a 53 year old, I like to challenge myself to think myself as a business, a public company, I like to brand myself, think logically and sounding reasoning. Do not do too much trades, just work on one by one carefully. Write business plans and share with others.

Do I need to learn day trading as a long term investor?

April 12, 2020

Introduction

It is important for me to learn how to do day trading, so that I can learn basic things how to analyze one stock. As a long term investor, usually I do not need to trade very often; in other words, I cannot read the market as well.

Case study

Last month, on March 9, 2020, I had VAB.TO ETF over $20,000 dollars, the price of VAB.TO went up to $27.25, but I did not sell gain over $2000 dollars, on March 18, the price went down to $23.61/ share. If I practice day trading techniques very often, I believe that I will sell high at price $27.25, and buy low at $23.61. The price difference is $3.61/ share, and I have over 1000 share.

The market change of VAB.TO from March 10 to March 18 is $3.76 (March 10, $27.37, March 18 $23.61), 14%.

I remembered that I woke up around 6:00 AM in the morning, and surprised that my bond has profit based on my mobile Jstock.

5 Reasons Why Traders Lose Money 💰

Here is the link.

Five reasons why traders lose money:

  1. Trade real money too soon;
  2. If you can not succeed in simulation, then you are not ready for day trading
  3. No strategy - long term success
  4. Business viewpoint, right tool; spend extra money on right tools; Small losses are ok, not personal;
  5. Wait too long to start

Trade real money too soon

Too confident. No training. No prior experience.

Skill level evaluation. Extra pressure. Emotion response.

No strategy

You have to have strategies. It takes years to find strategies. You should not invent the wheel.

Some sells strategies. Some sellers are not authentic.

How I made purchase Canadian oil stocks in March 27, 2020?

April 11, 2020

Introduction

I am a new baby investor on stock market, and I came back to invest on stock market after 10 year break, since  I panic sale on 15 years low in January 2009, time the market; I came back to invest starting from May 2019. Recently I made purchase Canadian oil stocks in March 27, 2020, and I like to follow up to write down my thought process, how I made decisions. Later on, I will review my thought process, and make myself better to make decision as a business woman, 53 years old, and very hard working, a learner.

Highlights of decision making

Here are highlights:

  1. I plan to panic sell on March 16, market lowest point, and then I talked to my friend and removed my anxiety after two hour 30 minutes phone conversation;
  2. More on step 1, I took care of my emotions first;
  3. After March 16, 3 days market went up 20%; I was lucky to experience around $5,000 dollar gains as recovery;
  4. I felt that I should spend some of my gain, so I decided to invest on oil stocks since those stocks still were not went up;
  5. I remembered my reading about big stock market crash may be followed a 30% gain in less than 6 months;
  6. I do not have too much time to study oil companies, less than two hours, so I decided to purchase more than one stock; I should not take too much risk, so I just purchased around $2000 on oil stocks, and $360 on Canada airline stocks.
  7. I do think that SPX will not have 30% gain in next 12 months, I should take some risk on individual stocks.
  8. I chose those stocks from top losers on March 12, my research on big crash.
  9. I like to hold 20 stocks, Canadian biggest companies.
  10. I like to invest Canada economy. It is my first time to purchase Canadian stocks after I immigrated near 10 years.
I am so naive as an investor on stock market, and I like to learn. It is better for me to write down my thought process. Later on if  I lose money, I understand myself and understand my decision process.

God bless USA and Canada.

My purchase

Here is the blog I wrote about my purchase after one week.
Here is the blog to document my purchase of distressed oil stocks, March 27 2020.

Jstock performance

I spent over 10 minutes to setup portfolio on my mobile using Jstock.

Actionable Items

I like to review my blog after 3 months, six months, and one year later. I learn that the investment is so stressful, and I take some risk. Mental  health is so important as an investor, so it is better for me to monitor my emotions, my thought process and I like to keep myself as a long term investor.

I chose to be a passive investor, but in less than 12 months, I found the opportunity and came out this investment idea, I became an active investor.

April 30, 2020

I had to slow down and really think about why oil stocks go up more than 60% before coronavirus can be curable. People are so optimistic and then look forward to get back to normal. I have to ask myself seriously, what if I can invest more on March 27, 2020. Why I only invest $2,000 dollars, why not $20,000 dollars. What are those worries in my head at that day?

May 10, 2020

I became so optimistic, so I plan to purchase $10,000 dollar Canada oil stocks. Here is the post.

I need to evaluate the risk and learn importance of risk management.

Thought process to build Julia's coronavirus portfolio?

April 11, 2020

Introduction

I do think that I can come out the good idea to build a portfolio, but in order to make it success, I have to write down my thought process, analytic viewpoints, and then follow up with good execution over years. I like to write down something for my coronavirus portfolio $641.00 dollars.

My analytic process

It is time for me to write a business plan for my $641 purchase of distressed industries because of coronavirus.

Here is the blog to document my purchase.

Here are highlights:

  1. First, I should not take risk to buy one distress stock, instead I chose to purchase 9 stocks;
  2. My worst scenarios, 3 out of 9 stock may go out of business; since cruise business may not be bailed out by US government;
  3. It is better for me to gain experience about more about business, how to invest; so I lower the shares to one share;
  4. I will try to hedge on the way, if the stock continues to go down in next few months, I will decide to buy more if need;
  5. I have to be humble. As a 53 years old, I do not have fund to purchase those stocks on full price;
  6. I have less than 5% of my key largo asset on this stock portfolio; in other words, more than 80% are still in SPX (30%) and FTSE (30%).
  7. I like to keep those stocks at least 20 years; if I have gains on some of stocks, I will keep some of them.
  8. SPX will not go up 30% in theory in next 12 months, so it is better for me to take high risk stocks and then bet on better return in one of 9 stocks.

My positions

I should call it a better name instead of coronavirus portfolio.

I like to show my positions again in the following:

Steps to Construct a Perfect Trade!

Here is the link.

How can you construct a “Perfect” trade? You can’t! No-one can. Let’s establish something right off the bat. There’s no such thing as perfection in the marketplace, it’s simply non-existence. But as traders, we can always AIM for a perfect trade, or a great trade idea. In this video I will breakdown the process of constructing a trade, which can be close to perfect. I will be walking you through the several steps to guide you before you take on a trade. The steps will ensure that you have the highest probability of being right, and making a successful trade. Here’s what we cover: 1. Why there is no such thing as perfection in the marketplace. 2. How most people go towards trading, and why it’s WRONG. 3. The steps to constructing a “Perfect” trade. 4. Examples of each step, and how to apply it while trading. 5. Why you won’t ALWAYS be successful even while applying these steps. 6. Walk-through of a trade setup.

Here is snapshot of process:

1. Trigger
2. Hypothesis
3. Risk analysis
4. Execution
5. Trade idea

More detail

1. Trigger  (news or earning, price action, market sentiment)
2. Hypothesis ( Construct a trade setup, I think the stock will do xyz because of abc)
3. Risk analysis (entry point, stop loss, profit target, position size)
4. Execution (execute trade, exit price)
5. Trade idea

5 investment accounts went down bear market game together

April 11, 2020

Introduction

It is my learning process as an investment as 53 year old. I let five of my investment accounts went down bear market game together, and then finally I felt so relax to take care of those loss, and felt much better today. But I should review what are my decision process.

5 accounts went down bear market game together

I have 5 investment account, I can stop three of accounts in less than one hour.

First two accounts, $10,000 with Scotia bank. If I stop the plan, then I have to make an appointment, but I was too busy. I could not make it.

I have an account with Questrade.com, with TFSA over $68,000 dollars. It is easy for me to sell when I have all profits over $2500. I can keep one small acount like Par 401 K, and then reduce my risk to minimum.

I have an account with Ameritrade.com, best brokerage company. It should be so easy for me to sell over $2,000 dollars unrealized gains and then avoided the bear market loss, and then I could dive in when SPX was 2200.

Mint summary of investment account

Feb. 27, 2020 to April 11, 2020

Lessons learned through bear market

I like to write down what I learn from bear market, what I should learn should help me to generate more confidence on stock market. I like to find opportunities to build wealth through investment opportunities I choose.

Less than $6000 dollars unrealized losses is not so depressing, since I learn how to deal with my anxiety better when market swings down over 30% to 40%. It is important for me to learn as a long term invester, do not time the market.

March 16, 2020, I was panic and planned to sell 25% equity. Here is the blog.
March 27, 2020, I purchased distressed oil stock, here is the blog. And one week later, on April 2, 2020, I wrote a blog about 20% gains. Here is the blog.

Actionable Items

I have to ask myself deep in the heart. Why did I choose to let all my investment account go through bear market instead of taking 6% profit to run and avoid bear market from Feb. 6 2020.

One of ideas I thought about is that 6% does not last too long. If I save in CD it will take 4 years to get those profit. What is my goal to double the money? So I like to go through the process and see how many opportunities will come out, how many issues I have to work on before I can succeed as a long term investor.

So do not time the market. Do not panic, it is my original plan. I already spent over thousand hours to study, I should not worry about too much the pain, market will come back after three years for my balance portfolio.

Fmr. Pimco Chief Economist Paul McCulley breaks down Fed support

Here is the link.

Former Pimco economist Paul McCulley discusses the Fed's latest moves to support the economy. With CNBC's Brian Sullivan and the Fast Money traders, Tim Seymour, Karen Finerman, Steve Grasso and Guy Adami.

One of comments:

If printing trillions of dollars and increasing the deficit is not a problem then why should we pay taxes? Just print our tax money!

Another comment:

The stock market is the regurgitation of worthless paper. Corporate debt in the USA is $16 trillion dollars. The vast majority of the corporate DEBT comes from SPECULATION on FUTURE earnings. This is GAMBLING. Period. The US taxpayers should not be paying the GAMBLING DEBTS of Investment Bankers. Paper stocks, bonds, are FOOLS GOLD. The 2 trillion, 300 billion dollars will be used to purchase FOOLS GOLD. The stock market is an alchemy scheme: "worthless paper assets" are converted into legal tender, by an ACT OF CONGRESS.

Optimistic that banks will come through on loans: Mark Cuban

Here is the link.

Dallas Mavericks Owner Mark Cuban joins "Closing Bell" via phone to discuss the state of the markets and the economy, as well as when the NBA season may resume. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Tuesday he hopes to approve further funding Thursday to buoy small businesses devastated by the coronavirus pandemic. “I will work with Secretary Mnuchin and Leader Schumer and hope to approve further funding for the Paycheck Protection Program by unanimous consent or voice vote during the next scheduled Senate session on Thursday,” he said in a statement. Congress late last month approved a $350 billion small business loan program as part of a more than $2 trillion stimulus bill aimed at helping the economy recover from the coronavirus pandemic. The program is aimed at helping small businesses that provide the engine of employment and entrepreneurship in the U.S. economy. The small business measures aim to help companies cover payroll and other expenses during the punishing outbreak. Firms with fewer than 500 employees can use the money to cover salary, wages and benefits, with a maximum loan of $10 million or 250% of monthly payroll Still, the initial rollout of the ambitious program faced challenges as banks hurried to prepare themselves to assist with the efforts. In the run-up to the program’s launch this past Friday, banks and trade groups pushed for more clarity around the program and sought to manage expectations about how quickly they could dole out the funds. This week, there were technical glitches with the system amid the flurry of demand. Some banks are still awaiting guidance from the Treasury on promissory notes clarifying the terms under which the loans are valid, a person familiar with the situation told CNBC. The Treasury did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Still, some banks viewed the announcement of more funds positively, believing it would reassure small business owners that the system would have enough money to cash their checks, even as it works through the technical issues, that person said.

Are Your Tenants Unable To Pay Rent Due To Coronavirus? Here's What To Do!

  1. Have a plan

Nearly a third of Americans didn't pay rent this month, new data shows

Here is the article.

Of more than 13 million units in the US that the report covered, 69% of renters paid their rent between April 1 and 5. During the same period in April 2019, 82% of households paid their rent on time, the report said.

Harry Dent: Don't Confuse the Short-Term Virus with the Long-Term Debt and Financial Asset Bubble

Here is the link.

One of comments:

Today's high inflation is not in commodities like the 1970's but in cost of living, mainly rising rents, child care, student debt and medical costs have been increasing way above stagnant wages. These are the main drivers in the economy leaving less to restaurants, travel, air lines, hotels, gasoline and clothing. The future prospects for generation Z to have a family and buy a home is bleak. They have been stripped of earning power by moving jobs overseas and of making a living wage and the rise of inflation in private for profit monoplized health care, college education and debt. Add massive debt fuelling increases in real estate price and rents, and it comes down to structural failure of the system...the neoliberalism system of excess deregulation, privatization, financialization and free trade. A global health crisis like Covid 19 is the catalyst for system change away from the neoliberal me mentality into a more social we mentality.

Another comment:

Have you heard that 30% of renters have NOT paid rent for April? Have you heard that car sales are down 80%+? Those two things alone are enough to send the economy into a recession, even without job losses. Add in an extra 20% unemployment and you have a mega-depression that has hit us, we just don't realize it just yet.

Victoria TFSA portfolio - Export to excel product feature

April 11, 2020

Introduction

It is surprising that I found the feature to review balance history day by day on Questrade.com. I like to review my balance history, and I like to compare to my Key largo portfolio.

Case study

Here is the report I generated by Export to Excel product feature.

By lookup balance history of my Key largo IRA portfolio, I looked up the following dates on this Victoria TFSA portfolio.

Date             unrealized gains(losses)
10/25/2019   $418.74
11/22/2019   $1559.99
12/20/2019   $1972.36
1/24/2019     $2427.01
2/19/2020      $2775.53
3/6/2020       (36.36)
3/12/2020     (7274.58)
3/23/2020     (9,068.98)
4/09/2020     (2270.28)

Balance history

It is not easy to get balance history from TFSA. I have to get the balance day by day.

I remembered the joy I had from Dec. 1 2019 to Feb. 19, 2020. I noticed that my TFSA has over $2000 dollar gains, and I was so happy and tried to get some fund from US bank. I did not care about Coronavirus in China, and I did not pay attention to learn the impact, how fast it changes the whole economy.

How to read the loss report?

Based on my experience after 2009 panic sale, 10 years from 2009 to 2019's return is less than 1.2% average annual return. On March 23, the loss is 16%. In other words, if I am panic, then it will take me 16 years to recover. I am a 53 year old, and after 13 years, I will be 66 year old.

More calculation

It takes me another 20 minutes to make some modification on market change calculation.

Coronavirus warning: economic damage worse than Great Depression - BBC News

Here is the link.

The coronavirus pandemic will cause the worst global economic downturn since the Great Depression almost a century ago. That is the warning from the International Monetary Fund. The British economy could be affected just as badly. Meanwhile there's been a spike in deaths at a number of care homes in the UK since the outbreak began. The deaths are not recorded in the daily official figures from hospitals.  For the third week running, millions of people have taken part in a national round of applause for NHS staff and key workers. Sophie Raworth presents BBC News at Ten reports from Economics Editor Faisal Islam, Social Affairs Correspondent Alison Holt and Ireland Correspondent Emma Vardy.

How Coronavirus Decimated The Restaurant Industry Overnight

Here is the link.

Restaurants in the U.S. are reeling from city and state-wide initiatives that shut down many restaurant dining rooms essentially overnight. As Americans stay inside and refrain from going out to eat, small and independently owned restaurants are facing massive uncertainty, and they are doing their best to accommodate accordingly. In the interim, the National Restaurant Association estimates that 3 million industry employees have already lost their jobs, and restaurants nationwide will take a $225 billion sales hit through May 2020. Even with some help from the $2 trillion federal stimulus package, restaurant owners may not be able to keep their staff employed, or even keep the doors open throughout the COVID-19 crisis.

Billionaire investor Bill Ackman explains his trades around 'hell is coming' interview

April 11, 2020

Introduction

It is tough world for a retail investment to understand how to hedge against the positions in my equity position. I think that billionaire Bill Ackman is tough and he made his decision using credit default swap on CDS index, in early February of 2020.

Case study

I like to look into how this thing works.

Here is the link.

I like to read carefully about the bet:

It is very clearly explained how to hedge against his positions in equity investment. He place bet about 2.6 billion dollars, covering his position in the long of those stocks. He is hedging his stocks and the bet is such a big winner.

Pershing Square Capital CEO Bill Ackman told CNBC's Scott Wapner on March 18 that he had a feeling that "Hell is coming." The appearance stoked a lot of controversy after it was that Ackman's Pershing Square netted $2.6 billion gain after a bet against the equity markets. Ackman released a letter Thursday night explaining what happened. CNBC's Becky Quick explains the details of the letter as well as reports on her conversations with Ackman. Stocks fell sharply on Friday, giving back some of the strong gains experienced in the previous three days to cap off another volatile week on Wall Street. Sentiment took a hit as investors focused back on the coronavirus outbreak as the U.S. became the country with the most confirmed cases. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 916 points, or 4%. The S&P 500 slid 3.6% along with the Nasdaq Composite. Boeing dropped more than 10% to lead the Dow lower. Disney and Exxon Mobil each fell more than 6%. Energy and industrial s were the worst-performing sectors in the S&P 500 as they dropped 5.7% and 4.6%, respectively. The Dow rallied more than 6% Thursday to post its biggest three-day gain since 1931. From Monday’s close through the end of Thursday’s session, the Dow was up more than 20%. The S&P 500 also rallied more than 6% and was up over 20% since Monday’s close as well. “We believe medium-term risks are skewed to the downside after this rally,” Maneesh Deshpande, Barclays’ chief U.S. equity strategist, said in a note on Friday. “Two other uncertainties facing investors (the length of the economic quarantine required to contain the virus and the ultimate economic damage) remain unresolved.” “Bear market ‘head-fake’ rallies are not uncommon,” Deshpande added. The bear runs that began in 2000 and 2007 both had head fakes of more than 20% before ending, Barclays data shows. The biggest bear market head fake came during the bear market that started in 1937, when stocks rallied more than 60% before falling again.
