- As part of the Education Economics and Data Science Lab, I helped lead the research and development of predictive analytics and forecasting models that shape the delivery of education across the province of B.C. As Lead Economist (Data Scientist), I leveraged data using tools such as R, Python, and SQL to guide executive decision making. Some project highlights include:
o Yearly student enrolment forecasting – Using a cohort-survival model, I forecast the number of students that will be enrolled in B.C. public schools. This model guides the allocation of capital to school districts.
o Developed a workforce attrition model that is used to inform teacher supply and demand planning across the province. I use R to apply machine learning models as part of a larger simulation model used forecast yearly attritions from the K-12 education workforce and the demographics of the workforce in each forecast year.
o Partnered with Statistics Canada to use individual tax-file data on research related to student post-graduation outcomes and career trajectories. This involves using R to work with very large (larger than memory) data sets.
o Scraping web data and email engagement data using Python. These scripts have been used to build data capacity at the ministry, and this newly acquired data is being used to improve communication between the ministry and teachers around the province.
o The use of natural language processing (NLP) to analyze open text survey responses on the impact that the COVID-19 pandemic had on students, parents, and staff in a sample of B.C. public schools.
o Principal author of the B.C. Education Sector Workforce Report, a lengthy public facing document that provides a cohesive review of the workforce in B.C.’s K-12 education sector. While authoring this report, I developed a large directory of SQL queries that are used as the basis of all workforce related reporting done by the ministry.
o Hire, mentor, supervise, and oversee junior staff.
