Case study: Lottery winner

Here is the article.
Richard Lustig
“I’ve been rich and I’ve been poor, and I like rich a whole lot better.”
Richard Lustig is one of the rare exceptions. The 65-year-old Florida man is a seven-time lottery game grand-prize winner who is still basking in riches after hitting it big about two decades ago. “Obviously it’s changed my life big time,” he told TIME on Tuesday. “I’ve been rich and I’ve been poor, and I like rich a whole lot better. We’ve lived in big, fancy houses. I drive a Jaguar. We’ve gone on cruises. I can’t complain.”
The former professional drummer, who banked his largest payout of $842,000 playing Mega Money, has kept most of his earnings and wrote the book, Learn How to Increase Your Chances of Winning the Lottery, in 2010 after his latest lotto win of $90,000.
The book has been flying off shelves in the last two weeks. “It’s been insanity. We’ve sold thousands of dollars because of all the publicity,” he said. “We wait for these kinds of moments, when jackpots get really high. When it happens, boom!”
Lustig, who has two children with his wife of 30 years, said the key to staying happy is to hire a good financial planner and a good accountant after paying off all debts. “I’m smarter than that,” he said. “People, they just don’t think. You have to secure your future.” “The reason why you hear those horror stories about people who win huge amounts like that and all of a sudden they’re filing bankruptcy is because it’s usually from people who have never had that kind of money before in their lives,” he added. “They just go through it like crazy. They think there’s no tomorrow. Well, there is a tomorrow and eventually it will run out.”

Here’s How Winning the Lottery Makes You Miserable

Here is the article.

Sandra Hayes
“These are people who you’ve loved deep down, and they’re turning into vampires trying to suck the life out of me”
Sandra Hayes won the Missouri lottery in 2006 and split a $224 million Powerball with a dozen coworkers. The St. Louis woman is now a retired social worker and wrote the book, How Winning the Lottery Changed My Life. She told the Associated Press she had to “adapt to this new life” which changed how she saw her closest family and friends. “I had to endure the greed and the need that people have, trying to get you to release your money to them,” she said in 2012. “That caused a lot of emotional pain. These are people who you’ve loved deep down, and they’re turning into vampires trying to suck the life out of me.”

Jim Cramer - China IPO analysis

How should I rush to learn basics of AI?

Nov. 24, 2019

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. I went to Facebook onsite interview this August, I met a few friends in California as well. One of them is a Linkedin manager and he gave me a gift for six month free premium account, and one is principle scientist of AI in Mercedes. Another friend also coached me how to find jobs before dinner, who works for Google. This December one of friends will come to Vancouver to attend a conference of AI.

Start to learn, learn early as possible

I learn the lesson that I wasted 20 years from 1999 to 2019 since I did not learn how to invest; I spent almost whole year to learn how to invest in 2019. The lesson is to start early.

How to learn AI and start to build interest on this area?

Dialpad is the startup company I have strong interest to learn.

He has also written two best-sellers on investing: "The Most Important Thing" and "Mastering the Market Cycle." Howard spoke to students in the Amador Valley Investment Club on May 2nd, 2019.

$150 registration for tutorials - Should I attend the conference?

Nov. 24, 2019

Introduction

It is holiday season. I am really looking for great ideas to meet and learn more about business, AI. My friend will visit Vancouver, and then I figure out that I also can attend the conference if I pay $150 Canada dollars for tutorials.

Friendship

I like to check out my frugal leadership and see if I can make a good decision on this choice. Here is my blog about the conference.

Talk about $150 expenses

It is better to save $150 dollars and then I go to youtube.com, search those speakers and learn from their past presentation.

One thing is to reason how good it is to pay $50 dollars for each of three sessions. I will meet my friend working for AI Mercedes if there is chance.

From average paid job to top 5% job

Nov. 24, 2019

Introduction

It is my linkedin update. I got the notification that top 5% pay is around $100,000 Canada dollars/ US dollars. I like to figure out how to make transition from average paid job to top 5% job.

Top 5% job

It is not too tough for me to apply the job since I already went to onsite for those jobs from Amazon and Facebook. I also like to learn how to push myself work hard, and train myself more on basics of problem solving.

In her talk, Nuria points out that our smartphones inform us very well but do not know our personality nor our mood and thus neither adapt their communication to us as a human conversation partner would. She proposes us possible ways how a smartphone can identify our personality and mood. Thus, a smartphone would adapt not only to our personality but also to our current mood and communicate to us in a much more human form. December 2019 and a conference in Vancouver

Nov. 24, 2019

Introduction

It is a conference related to AI, here is the link. My friend will come to the city of Vancouver from Sillicon Valley. She posted it on wechat, and I like to write a blog how I should work on.

Sillicon Valley

I knew the friend near two decades. She is the principal scientist of Mercedes. I spent some time to research her profile on Linkedin.com. She has very successful career. She used to be a professor for top engineering school and also she worked as multiple jobs, at least 3 jobs last 20 years.

She told me that she got three offers in one month when she moved the whole family to Sillicon Valley. She told me two years ago when she and her family visited Vancouver. At that time, I did not really understand how hard it is. Now I understood better.

I had onsite from Amazon Seattle in 2018, and then 2018 August phone screen from Facebook, and then 2019 August onsite from Facebook. I never had any offer and I am hunger for more understanding.

I went to Facebook onsite interview and we met with other friends in Sillicon valley, a city called San Mateo near the airport. I wrote a blog about our dinner together with friends in Florida.

I like to come out some ideas to work on. Maybe I should learn from conferences as well. It is time for me to learn how to learn something about AI.

How not to squander the $1.5 billion Powerball jackpot

Here is the article.

I like to review those analysis and see if I can follow all ideas in the following:

After investing that $651 million in a conservative portfolio that earns an average of 3 percent a year, the move could generate a steady cash flow of about $19.5 million a year. (And that’s without spending down any of the actual prize money.) For the typical worker, that would be more than enough money to splurge on a new home, buy some luxury cars, offer some financial support to family and friends, and still indulge in a few luxurious vacations.

3% - conservative portfolio

One hypothetical portfolio that winners can consider would involve investing 40 percent of the money in municipal bonds, where returns would be free of federal — and in some cases state and local — taxes, Carbone says. Another 30 percent could be invested in dividend paying stocks from high-quality companies; 15 percent could be invested in real estate, including commercial real estate and rental properties; 10 percent could be invested in alternative markets such as gold and other commodities; and 5 percent could be held in cash.

30% - dividend paying stocks from high-quality companies
15% - real estate
10% - alternative markets - such as gold or other commodities
5% - cash

10 ideas to make US million dollar asset dream come true

Nov. 23, 2019

Introduction

It is time for me to work on ideas. How to generate ideas to make my US million dollar asset dream come true? It is the first year first time I have this thought. I like to push myself to work hard.

10 ideas

There are a few surprise this year 2019. I had Fortinet onsite, Amazon onsite, Facebook onsite, Docusign phone screen, last week Dialpad online code screen.

I just could not believe that I have chance to go out and meet more people, learn more business. Also I think that I have to catch up learning about business, investment, technology and all other interesting things.

1. Get Facebook job in 2020. This will make my dream come true early and possible. All I have to do is to push myself hold high standard. Practice more algorithm up to 700, and also learn more about system design.

2. Get a full time to work for dialpad, try to pass online code screen. I will get paid as Canadian dollars, so it should go to my Canadian million dollar dream.

3. I like to learn more about investment, finance, and also get myself more educated about capitalism. The idea is to work on my 401 K and IRA, and see if I can learn to invest better.

4. Reserve some TFSA account to purchase USA ETF. I like to look into software ETF, technology ETF.

5. One of ideas is to learn how to invest $4000 - $5000 US dollars every year on stock market.

6. It is tough project to work on. I only have less than $40,000 dollar on my retirement fund and cash, and a condo with market value $135,000 us dollars.

7. I do not have too much time to learn personal finance and investment. I have to push myself to learn investment first, marketing and sales first.

Actionable items

It is hard for me to manage a project like this called millionaire dream. But I understand that it is also important for me to continue to work on being frugal life style study. I think that it is important for me to stay frugal, and stay away from people hyperactive spending.

The Dramatic Rise (And Fall) Of Xiaomi

Here is the article.

Lei often often says in public that Mi fans are “science geeks without high incomes,” indirectly indicating that their reviews of the phone are credible.
The fans also did their part by giving the phone free promotion online, especially on Sina Weibo, a popular microblogging platform.
Given its ability to generate word-of-mouth publicity through fans, Xiaomi was able to avoid unnecessary marketing expenditure. It sold its phones in flash sales online, whipping up a frenzy for its latest models.

How to prepare online code assessment?

Nov. 23, 2019

Introduction

I like to make plans to prepare for online code assessment. I like to prepare at least 10 hours before I take online code assessment.

How to prepare?

I think that I should take some adventure, and work on a few mock interview sessions on Leetcode.com.

I also like to take some time to review the algorithms I solved. I have solved over 400 algorithms, and I like to take some time to review those algorithms as well.

I also like to take advantage of preparation, push me to solve more algorithms. My goal is to solve 700 algorithms on Leetcode.com. Now my mark is 460.

Hottest startup

It is my strategy. I do not know which company is hottest one. What kind of flow for talent to move to/ from. So what I do is to push myself hard, work on practice once I have time.

Based on my analysis, dialpad is hottest startup in the city of Vancouver. I like to give it a try.

Here is the link.

Research topic is about poverty, how to get rid of poverty? Nobel price wen to those three economists, two are in MIT, one in Harvard university.

Here is the article.

Leetcode mock interview

Nov. 22, 2019

Introduction

It is two hour mock interview. I solved all three algorithm and it took me less than 90 minutes.

Case study

Here is my performance.

Nov. 24, 2019
239. Sliding Window Maximum C# mock interview performance with code review in 2019
117. Populating Next Right Pointers in Each Node II C# using level by level traversal practice in 2019
69. Sqrt(x) C# binary search practice with challenges in 2019

Actionable Items

I think that it is better for me to solve another 250 algorithms. I should learn from my practice, therefore I can perform better in any coding project.

My weakness in the above three algorithms:

1. Consider edge case - not careful. I need online judge help - binary search algorithm Sqrt(x)
2. I should simplify the solution, learn more about C# API LinkedList. My analysis is not so strong.

熊晓鸽 - wiki article

Here is the article.

Introduction

It is a very good idea to ask help. I went to Costco and planned to purchase a bag of wheat flour, and I saw a young Indian lady who likes to purchase as well. So I asked how she does the work to make bread. She told me to look up Tartine Bakery.

Learn how to bake

I have problems last few years. I only have one time to make a dough successfully using yeast. The lady told me that she only needs patience, only bread, salt and water.

Keys to Recruiting Success with Dialpad

Here is the article.

What are the key skills you look for in candidates?

Teachability is a big one. Testing a candidates’ coding ability at the front end of the recruiting process will help you test their problem-solving ability. But we’re not focused on whether they get the problem right, we’re more interested in how they’re attacking that problem and whether they’re open to feedback and being coached on their approach. HackerRank has been especially helpful for us during the coding assessment and video CodePair sessions, to really nail into this. So that we know this candidate we’re bringing on-site is definitely going to pass by a certain percentage the whiteboard sessions they have to complete.

Some facts:
2 engineers - work on HackerRank assessment -> onsite -> population was failing -> the reason is that the problems are not challenging enough.
3 assessments -> 7 assessments -> different levels of qualification/experience/background per candidate
upfront assessments, pass-through rates -> save time, save candidates time. Continue to calibrate and align on that proper background.

Forbes Richest 400: The Latest List Reveals A Surprising New Wealth Strategy

Here is the article.

Yale’s David Swensen Proves You Can Beat the Market
I firmly believe you can beat the market for years if you put your mind to it. Take David F. Swensen, chief investment officer of Yale University’s endowment fund since 1985.
Under his leadership, Yale investments increased from $6 billion to $22.5 billion, returning an annualized profit of 18% over the past 10 years. That’s two percentage points above the market averages, and well beyond more conservative endowment funds.
Moreover, Yale’s fund did not suffer a single down year during the difficult 2000-2003 bear market. And last week, Yale announced that its endowment fund gained 28%.
Swensen is considered the Babe Ruth of endowment funds managers.

David F. Swensen - Wikipedia

Here is the article.

Under Swensen's guidance the Yale Endowment saw an average annual return of 11.8 percent from 1999 to 2009.[4] As of the 2016 fiscal year, Yale's endowment had risen by 3.4%, the most out of any Ivy League school, according to Institutional Investor.[5]
Swensen was listed third on aiCIO's 2012, a list of the 100 most influential institutional investors worldwide. In 2008, he was inducted into Institutional Investors Alpha's Hedge Fund Manager Hall of Fame.[6]

Here is the article.

Interview experience blog

Nov. 19, 2019

It is a nice article about interview, and I learn a few things from the author. Here is the link.

Algorithm: Search kth number

Here is the algorithm blog.

This is best blog I read related to the algorithm similar to find median in data stream.

Discussion about algorithm and data structure programming

I like a few good arguments in the article.

Let me list a few arguments in the above article.

  4. Google

Here is the link.

Argument 1:

Argument 2:
