Case study: 2000 December citi bank credit card monthly statement - Series 1 of 6

January 7, 2019

Introduction

I started my personal finance research in Nov. 2018. After hundreds of hour study, I came out the idea to find citi bank statements, I looked up my closed citi bank credit card account online and then I found the product feature for download. It is so surprising that I can request the statements from 1996 to 2018. I got 12 statements and I like to push myself to analyze the purchase, and ask why? How many things are wrong and waste of money?

Case study

Here is my personal finance github folder. I also like to show the statement in the following.

I like to do a few case studies on this monthly statement. One is $384.00 dollars cost of private coaching of English.

I need to categorize the expenses. I drove to Orlando and visited a few theme parks with my mom.

One is about cost of Global Institute of LA $384.00 dollars. I spent money on private coach which costed me $25.00 dollars one hour, and I had some coach to show me how to improve my reading.

First of all, I need to learn how to be a frugal person back in 2000. And also I need to learn the value of $2,000 US dollars at that time. It can be used to purchase a home in the city of Yichun, jiang xi province. Compared to the salary I had in Shanghai from 94 to 96, my monthly salary is $100 US dollars in 1994, $200 us dollars in 1995.

I need to learn how to invest those money. In reality, I could not improve my English or my coding skills or my problem solving skills in 2000.

Thank you citibank

Jan. 16, 2019

Introduction

I like to write a short blog to give thanks to citibank since the citi credit card has product feature to allow me to download statements from 1996 to 2017.

Facts

I went to Florida in 1996 and my account was closed in 2017 since I stopped to purchase using citi credit card starting from 2016.

I had tough time to handle my first laidoff in 2001, I made wrong decision to destroy those returned checks and also I did not keep all bank statements from 1996 to 2010. I have hard time to do personal finance research.

I have hundred of pages of documents, I keep them and brought to Canada. I learned my appeal for leave case in 2009 for my Canada skilled immigration case.

I did not spend time to dig into until Nov. 2018. I like to be my own finance analyst, and be my own problem solver. I think that it all takes the determination, hard work, and also good intention to document journey and share with others.

Big hero

I came cross the product feature on citi bank credit card website. I found the product feature to download statements from 1996 to 2018.

That is such great feature, I like to write a big thank you blog to Citi bank.

My personal finance research progress report - 2019-03

March 14, 2019

Introduction

It is the first time I decided to start personal finance research started from Nov. 2018. I also like to work on 10,000 hours in order for me to master basic principles, rules, and build very good personal finance habits. I may have spent over 500 hours to study on the personal finance research last 5 months.

Progress report

I like the personal finance research. It is a new world for me. I find that there are so many things to learn, books to read, videos to study, and ideas to think about; I do not have a lot of asset, but I spent 23 years in United States and Canada. This is the first time I like to get educated from youtube.com videos, books and talks.

I like to be a self-learner. I learn from my own experience to how to get a gold medal, top 4% rating from over 10,000 players on hakerrank.com. I know the term called mental toughness.

Here are some highlights I did, and I like to use them to showcase my progress.

1. I make a few purchases of Canadian dollars, called date my money in series, I, II, III, IV .
2. I did some case study based on my citi credit card statements from 1996 to 2017.
3. I also reviewed all documents based on papers, and documented them first.
4. I did spend time to learn stock market, economy, and money, and I find some good mentors.

Milestones of personal finance research

Nov. 12  Home price study, $100,000 up in 2 years
Nov. 14  Mint app
Dec. 15  10-15% saving from paycheck 2010 - 2018
Jan. 14  Francis Kong   personal finance, major leak/ min leak. One pen, one paper, diligent heart
Jan. 16  Citi bank, credit card statements available from 1996 to 2017
Jan. 13  Date my money
Feb. 9   Lottery winner study
Feb. 12  Mental accounting, investor psychology study
Feb. 22  Warren Buffet
March 10 What if I sell the condo in Boca Raton

I started from frustration and worry about housing problem in Vancouver, and then I started to learn personal finance. I found out that I do not do basic personal finance habit check. I do not keep all bank statements, receipts, and I do not do any annual analysis from 1996 to 2017.

I have to push myself to learn and find my personal finance data. One thing is to start to sort out all paper works I saved from 1996 to 2017, and second thing is to find out citi bank credit card statements from 1996 to 2018. I started to analyze those statements.

I also started to work on case studies; whenever I learn things from youtube videos, books, and articles, I also try to apply to myself. I love those case studies.

My top 10 favorite case studies will be listed here.

Business analysis of my rental property

Jan. 26, 2019

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. I spent time from 7:00 PM to 1:00 AM on Jan. 25 and then put all my checking account statements into Excel sheet. I like to analyze my rental business in detail, I like to push myself hard to build basic finance habit, and learn basic analysis, market and sales, and understand the business better.

Business analysis

This is the first time I came out the idea and willing to reserve time to do basic book keeping. Why? Since I could not afford a home in Vancouver area, last November I decided to start personal finance research. I like to learn how to grow rich, build wealth. This is the first time in last 10 years I spent one hour to put all 12 checking statements into one excel sheet for each year. Last night I spent 6 hours to generate this report based on chase checking account statements.

The analysis is hard to process, since there are so many factors involved.

Dive deep

I do not have proper business education through the college years from 1984 to 1992, and from 1996 to 1998, from 2002 to 2006, from 2008 to 2010. I try to figure out why I should analyze a business, what is my business goal and how to make business success in terms of financial and other experience.

I had a BB&T bank account, but I did not have statements from 2010 to 2011. The bank only provides last three years statements. I did not know why those money came from. My memory just had a few things, I opened the account in FAU branch, and I deposited some amount of money.

I spent over $4000 US dollars in bathroom repair in 2014 and 2015, and I spent over $4600 Canadian dollars to put new central AC. Two transactions are not in Chase bank statement.

I used my chase checking account to my citi bank credit expense. One purchase is for the trip to Florida in 2014. All others are not related to rental business, also I paid FAU tuition using chase checking account.

I was charged below $1,500 balance for monthly maintenance fee a lot of times.

Actionable Items

Ask BB&T to get bank statements from 2010 to 2012. The bank will not have records. I did ask Chase bank for records from 1996 to 2011, but no longer available.

I should have basic financial habit to save each statement for every year.

Case study: 2003 citi bank credit card statements and my analysis

March 9, 2019

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. I wonder why I am struggling in my personal finance, and I decide to work on personal finance research. One thing I have to do is to export all transaction from citi bank statements in pdf file to an excel sheet, and then extract the amount for each transaction, add Category column and store column, and then generate report.

Case study

Here is my 2003 citi credit card statement's analysis.

Open research

I am working on personal finance research. I like to find ideas how to analyze those data. Based on a few more facts, I can tell that there are a few things I should work on.

Step to generate report

1. Download statements from citicards.com
2. Copy and paste all transaction into Excel sheet
3. Run excel script to extra last 5 or 5 chars to get dollar amount
4. Use Excel -> Data -> column from text to number
5. Add more columns like year, month, store, category
6. Apply filter on excel sheet, expedite the work to apply multiple transaction one time.
Like filter 'publix', apply more than 30 transactions to grocery, store: publix once
7. Work on big purchase item, or multiple purchases expenses first.
8. Work on blank items on category, solve one by one for last 30 or 50 items.

It takes 19 years to learn

January 9, 2019

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. I was so busy last winter break after Christmas. I did not have any party to go. My good friend in SJTU went to Europe for family vacation, and I had to spend time to chat one hour with my Florida Atlantic University friend as well. I have Chinese friends and their family working in Seattle, they work for Google and Amazon.

It takes 19 years to learn

I started my personal finance research in November 2018. I continuously work on my research, and after hundreds of hour work, I push myself to find more things to work on. I finally searched citi bank credit card online access and there is a feature in citi bank credit card to request statement from 1996 to 2018.

This is the first time I downloaded all statements, and then I exported to Excel sheet, applied some simple scripts and generated the pivot table. Here is the blog I documented my experience this morning. I took a sick day to go for dental appointment.

I purchased over $1900 US dollar clothing alone in 2000. I just could not believe that.

I am always a good friend to all my past classmates. But we do not communicate with personal finance in detail. I tried to figure out why I have to work since my tooth are falling out since periodontics.

Since last few years I talked about social housing in Canada, I felt so ashamed to myself. I decided to do some research and figure out what is the real reason with my situation. My friend talked to me in 2017 summer.

One of my good friend from SJTU told me that I should not work on algorithm and data structure practice, she advised me in May 2018. I should not go for those challenging positions. I thought about it and I argued to myself. So that is one of reasons I decided to start my personal finance research.

Here is year 2000 citi credit card statements and my analysis. I just could not believe that I was such stupid in my purchase. In 2014, I went to Florida and threw so many clothes with good quality and some of them I even only wear two or three times into garbage can. I did not count how much I spent on cloths at all.

Here is my personal finance github.

My argument

If I do not learn the value of dollar, then there is no point to make more money. Since I will waste the money even I make more money from my job and investment.

I like to be a minimalist.

January 10, 2019 11:32 PM
If I was so smart like I am in 2019 back in 2000. I will cut all expenses to minimum. Do not offer my mom an international trip. Do not spend on clothing. Those two items will save $2600 US dollars. That is one bedroom condo in the city of Yichun. Or I will invest in Vanguard growth index fund for $3000 US dollar purchase.

Case study: Get back USA citi bank credit card

Dec. 9, 2019

I like to subscribe the service but I came cross the issue since I no longer had a working USA credit cards. My citi bank credit card was voided in 2017 since I did not have any activity more than 12 months.

Case study

I like to apply citi credit card again. I like to have a USA credit card.

Why frugality is so important?

March 30, 2019

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. I like to write a blog related to a topic called why frugality is so important.

Frugality is so important

I did case study on my Citi bank credit card statements from 1999 to 2001. I did not learn the importance of frugality, I tried to spend money to please myself and my mom and my relatives, I spent over $40,000 dollars on Citi bank credit card from 1999 to 2001.

I did not analyze my strategies based on my H1-B visa and its limitation, and I did not understand startup company and also my technical strength.

I also like to figure out that I spent over 20 years to pay off the loan on my home in Boca Raton with a loan around $25,000 us dollars in 1999.

It is true that when I started to work full time as a software programming using OPT or work visa, I did not know how hard it is for the startup company to survive. I did not know that the value those salary I got.  I have to use those income to build up my net asset.

2014 citi credit card statements

Jan. 28, 2019

Do not waste!

March 24, 2019

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. I am also a Christian, I like to be a good role model to other people. But I find out that I make huge mistakes and ignore the consequence of my actions.

Clothes

I just did calculate based on citi credit card, I spent over $6,000 us dollars from 1999 to 2001 over $6,000 us dollars on clothes. What are those clothes? Those are top brand clothes and bags. I paid my mom a condo in 2001 using $6,000 dollars, now it worth over $100,000 dollars.

I did go back in 2014 and threw away into community garbage can. It is not right things to do. I argued to myself to give more space to the renters. There is a cost to bring them back to Canada; There is cost for me to sell them one by one online or donation etc.

$40,000 credit card expense

I spent $40,000 us dollars on my citi credit card from 1999 to 2001. I bought a lot of stuff and put into a two bedroom condo.

I do not set up inventory check for those items. I do not track each item expenses, invoice, picture, usage. I just gave away, or throw away. I did analyze those cost this January 2019 finally based on citi bank credit card. It is not correct behavior.

I should think about and analyze, and make things better.

I bought extra video camera, I only played a few times. I just left inside condo. I should bring those item to Canada, I can use them record video and post some algorithm and personal finance video on youtube.com.

I did a case study on clothing sofa purchased with my mom together back in 2000.

Case study: 2012 citi credit card statements

Feb. 6, 2019

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. Today I got 12 statement of citi bank credit card statement in 2012. I like to case study the expenses on the citi credit card.

Case study

It is the third year I worked full time starting from 2010. I decided to take a vacation in January, I started with asset in Canada with $17,000 US dollars, but actually spent over $5,000 Canadian dollars for one month vacation.

I review all possible mistakes I made, and I like to push myself to learn.

One is to choose wrong time to take vacation. I paid $1050 US dollars for Air Canada ticket. This is the first vacation I took after I landed in Canada in 2010.

My analysis

I should choose slow season to take vacation. I can get ticket around $550 Canadian dollars in May. I should review my shopping habit and learn how to avoid those shopping expense around $500.00 dollars.

Actionable Items

I need to look into how to take vacation to China. How to reduce cost and also discipline myself in terms of shopping using credit card.

It is so easy for me to save $500 dollar on airline ticket if I choose the vacation in April instead of January.

I should study Air Canada ticket round trip to Canada, and learn how to time the market in the lowest point.

One thing I like to push myself to learn is to learn to spend minimum on vacation. I should understand that the expense should be income - savings. If my asset in Canada is less than $20,000 dollars, I should not spend $4000 for a vacation.

Also if I cannot control expense on clothing, I cannot control my personal finance at all.

Case study: My twin bed mattress purchased in 2010

Dec. 8, 2018

Introduction

It was most difficult time for me to adapt the new life in the city of Vancouver in 2000. I did not have a lot of savings in my bank account, and also I had a debt in my USA condo. I found a small home with the help from Florida, I was on road trip to Yosemite national park with my friend, 14 days road trip from Florida to Vancouver. I got a call from Florida and my friend told me that there is a home for me in the city of Vancouver. I like to write a blog about my twin bed mattress purchase in 2010.

Case study

I like to have a mattress so that I could sleep better. I found one on Vansky.com and it took me $20.00 dollars. I drove to the city of Richmond and got the mattress, and then I put in the trunk of my Ford Explorer. I got it and used it since then.

At that time, I stayed at home and looked for a full time from April to June 2010. I was paying a lot out to my car insurance, rent fee, food, and I did not know where was my future job. I made a purchase the old used mattress by a Chinese family.

Actionable Items

I still remembered that the day my landlord helped me to move the mattress off the truck.

Actionable Item

April 6, 2019
I got citibank statements from 2010 April to December. I like to share the citi bank statement and track how much I spent on the first few months.

I was so amazed that the interviewee's performance, and it was so challenging for me to catch up as an interviewer. This is the first time I met a Stanford computer science graduate.

Top 10 mock interviews

I have to select top 10 mock interviews from those 150 mock interviews on interviewing.io platform, and then I can replay those videos more often and learn from those interviewees.

I have to work on personal finance research, one thing I have to do is to generate annual report based on citi credit card statements. I like to listen something while I work on book keeping using Excel today, and then prepare reports first. Usually I will tell the problems through those reports later.

I need to learn how to parent myself, discipline, and learn how to invest money, spend needs not wants.

Focus on one algorithm

I ask longest univalue path algorithm to warm up the interviewee, and then use a dynamic programming algorithm or depth first algorithm to challenge the interviewee.

I have worked with interviewees on univalue longest path over last six months. I have to push myself to learn how to work with others on algorithms.

Case study: 1999 citi credit card statements

January 11, 2019

Introduction

It takes me less than three hours to come out the expense summary based on citi bank credit card statements. I like to do a case study and see how many issues in my expenses.

Case study

Here is my github personal finance folder. This is the first time I came out the total of clothing cost in 1999. Again it is close to $2,000 us dollars.

I just could not believe that small amount purchases can be added up to thousands dollars so quickly. It is definitely surprising that I purchased $2,000 dollars a year in 1999, 2000, 2001. All three year purchase of clothing can easily be added up to $6,000 US dollars.

Now I know that my most waste of money is on those clothing purchase. I made the same mistake from 2010 to 2017.

When I saw the market crashed in 2002, my mutual fund VIGRX from $3000 original purchase went down $2,000 dollars, I sold it. But how about those clothing, those are extra clothings. I should consider that it is loss of money I earn as well.

Summary by categories

It is so surprising that I spent almost $900/ month on credit card, I also paid $390/ month for car installment, and $490 for mortgage and condo association, $200 installation monthly for black leather sofa. I had extra bedroom empty and I lived in a two bedroom home.

I definitely need to learn how to save money. I drove less than 3 miles from home to office. That is the reason I spent $257 dollars on gas purchase.

Biggest purchase is $1205 projection TV with 56 inches. I paid mom's ticket from Beijing to Florida around $500 dollars.

Technical tips

I just could not believe that there are over 300 purchase transactions. I did one by one to figure out what store and update store category. After 30 minutes I found out that it is too time consuming, instead I just use Excel column filter "Contains", and then quickly process the same store in once.

It is not too difficult to process credit card statements pdf files and come out the summary report using Excel sheet.

Actionable Items

I need to build good personal finance habits. Here are things I like to do.

1. Keep all receipts;
2. Download all credit cards statement at the end of year;
3. Calculate the total of expenses by month, by year, by category;
4. It is not too difficult for me to learn how to use Excel sheet back in 1999.
5. Keep all clothing shopping receipts.

I just could not believe that I made purchase book over $190.00 dollars as well in 1999.

My thought after 20 years

I think that I should discipline myself and limit to myself with $100.00 dollars on wants, not needs. That means $1200 US Dollars for the whole year.

I was not a permanent resident in USA back in 1999. I worked using H1-B visa. I filed H1-B in 1999 by myself to save money. But I also needed to learn how to learn how to save and invest right away, once I had a full time job with $47,000 US dollar/ year, I need to push myself to learn how to invest, personal finance.

Over 7,000 us dollars on the credit card I should not spend at all. I think this way in 2019, January 1, 11:45 PM. Those expenses are not my needs.

Follow up

January 24, 2020

I should think about how much it costs to purchase a home in the city of Shanghai in 1999. I should think about how to save all those cashes, and then put into growth index fund over 20 years.

Trump’s win lifts banks, small-cap shares on bets of business-friendly policy

Here is the article.

Donald Trump’s return as U.S. president for the second time on Wednesday boosted equity markets on bets of lower corporate tax, favorable tariffs and deregulation, lifting the shares of banks, locally focused small-cap companies and Trump Media.

The S&P 500 and the Dow were set to open at record levels, while futures tied to the small-cap Russell 2000 index surged 6%.

“The market believes a Trump presidency will unleash animal spirits and give a boost to growth in the short-term through some relief on corporate taxes and deregulation,” said Frédérique Carrier, head of investment strategy for RBC Wealth Management in the British Isles and Asia.

The shares have nearly tripled in value from their all-time lows in late September, and his stake was last worth about $5.4 billion. The company’s nearly $9 billion stock market value is detached from its day-to-day business, analysts said.

Trump’s Republican Party also secured the Senate and was making gains in the House of Representatives, potentially making it easier for the president to legislate his proposals and push through key appointments.

Markets “have priced in a pretty strong mandate for the Republicans and are biasing toward most of the Trump trades,” said Scott Chronert, U.S. equity strategist at Citi.

“Policy details will be important for here as the market focus seems to be putting more emphasis on deregulation, tax cuts, and a more business-friendly backdrop.”

Victory for Trump, who has positioned himself as pro-cryptocurrency, lifted bitcoin to a record high. Crypto-linked stocks Coinbase, MicroStrategy, Riot Platforms, MARA Holdings jumped between 10% and 12%.

Private prison operators Geo Group and CoreCivic jumped 20% and 22%, respectively, as Trump’s promised crack down on illegal immigration could boost demand for detention centers.

Elsewhere, European defense stocks jumped against the backdrop of Trump’s earlier threat to withdraw from NATO, saying he would not defend allies that did not raise defense budgets.

“A Trump presidency would add further impetus to accelerate European defense spending, as evidenced by his first term in 2017-21,” Berenberg analysts said.

AUTOS, ENERGY AND CHINA

While Tesla shares surged on Musk-Trump proximity, stocks of other electric automakers dipped as Trump had said he would consider ending a $7,500 tax credit for EV purchases.

Rivian Automotive dropped 2.6% and Nikola slipped about 1.6%.

“Nobody is making money in EVs aside from Tesla, so the reduction or elimination of EV credits will widen Tesla’s competitive moat,” said Garrett Nelson, senior equity analyst at CFRA Research.

Shares of U.S. automakers Ford and General Motors were up 3.3% and 1.5%, respectively.

Oil majors Chevron and Exxon Mobil firmed about 2% each, while U.S. renewable energy companies such as NextEra Energy and First Solar plunged 6% and 14%, respectively.

Trump’s presidential campaign laid out an energy policy platform centered around maximizing U.S. fuel and power output, in part by dismantling the current administration’s centerpiece efforts to fight climate change.

Fears of escalation in Sino-U.S. tensions pressured U.S.-listed China shares with iShares MSCI China ETF dropping nearly 3%.

Import duties, including a 10% universal tariff on imports from all foreign countries and a 60% tariff on imports from China, are a key plank of Trump’s policies and likely to have the biggest global impact.
