Case study: Renting in Vancouver as a new immigrant

May 18, 2019

Introduction

It is my challenging job to be a sponsor for a young Chinese, my nephew. I am not one of his parents, I have no clue what he thinks and manages things. He landed in Canada last 48 hours before immigration visa expired, he drove 10 hours over 10,000 KM from Yichun to Shanghai overnight, and took the flight Air Canada on May 15 afternoon 3:00 PM, he made it on landing on May 15, 2019.

Case study

I was a busy aunt. My philosophy is to save money to be frugal. First day he stayed in Chinese airbnb like motel $50 Canada/ day. It took me three hours to call and talk and I found the place. Next morning I had to work on another place before May 16 - May 30 for a cheap price before he moved to long term rent starting from June 1, 2019. My ideal rental fee is $500 - $550/ month.

I talked to one of landlords on the internet and then I found out the place for him to stay until June 1, $400 dollars for rest of month, May 18 - May 31. I explained to the landlord, the money I save will help me to pay necessity. I like to save $200 dollars and work hard for it.

I also shared my story about my huge finance mistake on 401 K account.

But my nephew booked round trip airline ticket and will fly back to China on May 19, 2019. He chose not to stay another two weeks at all.
