S & P Index 500 one month study

Sept. 1, 2019

Introduction

It is my personal finance research. I learn that emotion is the biggest enemy of investment. I like to do a case study of S & P Index 500.

One month chart

Here is one month chart.

I purchased ETF and built my portfolio 3 month ago, S & P Index is around 2800. Last 30 days three times my profit went down less than $100 dollars except dividend.

Here is Key largo portfolio on Sept. 1, 2019.

Here is Victoria portfolio on Sept. 1, 2019.

My understanding is that I should not play like a day trader. But those fluctuations are so interesting for me to watch my portfolio. If I play with the market, then I may get addicted and affect my daily work and life.

August 5, 2019

Sept 2, 2019
Portfolio Key Largo profit is $554.13.

August 5, 2019
My Victoria portfolio profit $9.43

Sept. 2, 2019
My Victoria portfolio profit $683.53

Actionable Items

I like to learn how to invest long term. It is very hard to push myself invest all my 10 years savings in Canada into TFSA. So I should stay on the track on 3 year recession plan in worst case, I should target 10% return in 3 years, that is $4300 dollars profit.

If the market will not crash in 12 months, then I should get 10% return which is also $4300 dollars.

I may think about selling all my S & P index fund when S & P index is around 1900, and then purchase back when it is 1800. I can have 3 buy and sell in last one month.

Victoria portfolio - May 2019 Jstock performance report

March 23, 2020

Introduction

It is so interesting to document performance based on Jstock app on my mobile. I like to show the progress report based on data on March 23, 2020.

Progress report

I set up Victoria portfolio in May 2019. I was a learner with less than one year experience, so I did not know what I am doing. It is so interesting to learn that my original portfolio has loss near 10%.

Actionable Item

Jstock is easy for me to track the performance.

I like to set up a portfolio called Victoria 2020, so I could track my TFSA portfolio in two accounts. I will add those transactions into Jstock, and then use the portfolio as well.

Victoria portfolio March 1 2020

March 1, 2020

Introduction

It is so tough for me to learn how to invest on stock market. I have read more than one thousand hours about investment, but I like to say that it is so hard to learn how to ignore market noise, understand risk aversion.

Victoria portfolio

Here is my Victoria portfolio performance. It is time for me to rebalance my portfolio.

Case study: First portfolio in questrade.com - Victoria

June 4, 2019

Introduction

It is time for me to set up a portfolio on questrade.com. I have to push myself to learn and also take some risk to build my own portfolio.

Case study

The portfolio I like to set up is the following:

In Canadian dollars
1. $5000 VBAL - ETF, balanced fund, 0.22% MER

$39000 Canadian dollars, 30% VFV, 30% VDU, 40% VAB
2. VFV   $11700, 30%
3. VDU  $11700, 30%
4. VAB   $15600, 40%

I also need to set up orders, and I like to get into the market as soon as possible.

Here are snapshot of two order I placed tonight.

Next order is here:

I like to name this portfolio a beautiful name using one of Vancouver island names. I like to call it Victoria portfolio.

Follow up

June 6, 2019

I had to pay extra amount in order to get into the market, 600 share pay extra 0.50 cents each share, 140 share pay extra 1 dollar each share. Those two I paid extra few hundred dollars to get into market.

Here are my purchases.

I need to purchase VDU ETF in short future. So I can build a portfolio balanced 60% stock, 40% bond.

Victoria TFSA portofolio - balance history

April 12, 2020

Introduction

I designed my Victoria TFSA portofolio, and the risk management is based on 30% down risk since 60% equity in the balanced portofolio. But in reality the market down swing 15% is much worse to me, and almost I felt the whole world will end and I need to get out. So it is important for me to think in terms of percentage loss of Victoria portfolio.

Case study

I finally learned how to work with Questrade.com balance history and put together day by day into Excel sheet. Here is my final version of balance history from June 1 2019 to April 12, 2020.

My story of bear market

I like to say that I panic and like to sell on March 16, 2020. And I learned to calm down, do not let my emotion take control. After three days market swing up from March 25 to March 27, I felt that I gained over $4,000 without doing anything,  I decided to purchase oil stock on March 27, 2020.

Timeline

I have to learn how to read my own emotions to hold Victoria portfolio starting from June 2019.

It started party time mood from 12/1/2019 to Feb. 19, 2019.

Feb. 19, 2020  market gain 2.9% <- I like to have party, share good news to every one. Talk to every one about stock

Get nervous, I like to get out. Sell 50% of my equities from March 12 to March 23, 2020.

March 16, 2020 market losses -15% <- I just could not calm down. Think about selling 50% of equity, from $30,000 Canadian dollars to $15,000 dollars <- risk aversion

April 10, 2020 market losses -3.48% <- piece of cake, I learned how market works. Bear market is so challenging, but I should make a few more bets.

Positions on April 12, 2020

My rebalance history

Buy low and sell high, that is the game of investment.

I did some transaction in five days:

No.1 January 21, 2020 - buy low sell low, first time after six month, sell $2000 gain on equity ETF

No.2 Feb. 6, 2020 - buy $13,000 dollars equity fund - transfer money from US banks

No. 3 March 6, 2020 - SPX went down over 15%, all 30% gains from June 2019 to Feb. 2020 is gone. Buy some equity fund.
    VFV.TO  $1400 purchase

No. 4 March 12, 2020 - SPX went down another 20%.
    VFV.TO  $742.56 purchase

No. 5 March 23, 2020 - SPX went down
    VDU.TO $1060.40 purchase

No. 5 March 27, 2020 - buy oil stocks $2000 dollars

VFV.TO Total $2000 dollars (March 6, $1400, march 12, $742.56)

Home RetireMentors Investing 6 steps to the ultimate retirement portfolio - step one

Here is the article.

To be described as "ultimate," a retirement portfolio strategy had better be mighty good. This one is. It has a long historical record of "beating the market" by outperforming the Standard & Poor's 500 Index SPX, +1.05%  — with less risk the 15.5% standard deviation of the index.

Here's the shortest description I can give you: In a nutshell, 60% of this portfolio is a sophisticated combination of equity funds with massive world-wide diversification that includes value stocks, small-company stocks and real-estate funds added to a traditional large-cap growth stock portfolio. The other 40% is made up of short-term to intermediate-term government bonds.

Step One: The basics
The first chart has only two slices, 60% in for stocks (S&P 500 500 index) and 40% in bonds (Barclay's Government Credit Index). This is a traditional industry standard, approximating the way that pension funds, insurance companies and other large institutional investors allocate their assets. The stocks provide long-term growth, while the bonds add stability and income.
Let's use this as our benchmark. For 44 years, from January 1970 through December 2013, this portfolio would have produced a compound annual return of 8.8%. Not bad, especially considering this period included four of the most severe bear markets of the past 100 years.
Allocated this way, an initial investment of $100,000 in 1970 grew to over $4 million by the end of 2013.

Most of the details of this strategy involve the 60% stock side of the pie, and that's the main focus of this article. But the bond part is very important.

Actionable Items

It is challenge part to prepare $100,000 dollars to start a portfolio. I am working on my Canada portfolio Victoria using three ETFs, $37,000 dollars portfolio, using equity 60%, bond 40%, similar idea.

Deviation is something I have to learn more carefully. When I make decision, I have to learn deviation is normal, and bear market is normal as well.

Case study

Ideas to rebalance portfolio?

I like to sell 10 shares of VFV.TO, and then purchase VAB bond ETF. I like to buy low and sell high.

Here is the blog I documented on June 4 to setup my portfolio.

I do believe that this is biggest loss day I ever see. What should I do?

Should I continue to balance the portfolio, and sell some bond and purchase VFV.TO? What I can do is to wait another two months to work on rebalance?

Monetization

I like to write some value called monetized of julia coding blog. After five year blogging nonstop from 2015, in 2019, I learned that I have to look into those stock I chose to purchase back in 2000, and then those 401 K and IRA account I had. So I went back to invest in equity fund.

As of Nov. 7, 2019, I set up Key Largo and Victoria two portfolio, and then I also set up my 401 K par tech portfolio. I set up balanced portfolio, and believe that it is important to stay in the market, not time the market. After six months, the bear market is not here in north America. I learned the experience that portfolio with profit $1200 dollars for key largo, and profit $1000 for Victoria.

I choose to stay in the market, so I do not sell the shares for profit.

Victoria TFSA portfolio - Export to excel product feature

April 11, 2020

Introduction

It is surprising that I found the feature to review balance history day by day on Questrade.com. I like to review my balance history, and I like to compare to my Key largo portfolio.

Case study

Here is the report I generated by Export to Excel product feature.

By lookup balance history of my Key largo IRA portfolio, I looked up the following dates on this Victoria TFSA portfolio.

Date             unrealized gains(losses)
10/25/2019   $418.74
11/22/2019   $1559.99
12/20/2019   $1972.36
1/24/2019     $2427.01
2/19/2020      $2775.53
3/6/2020       (36.36)
3/12/2020     (7274.58)
3/23/2020     (9,068.98)
4/09/2020     (2270.28)

Balance history

It is not easy to get balance history from TFSA. I have to get the balance day by day.

I remembered the joy I had from Dec. 1 2019 to Feb. 19, 2020. I noticed that my TFSA has over $2000 dollar gains, and I was so happy and tried to get some fund from US bank. I did not care about Coronavirus in China, and I did not pay attention to learn the impact, how fast it changes the whole economy.

How to read the loss report?

Based on my experience after 2009 panic sale, 10 years from 2009 to 2019's return is less than 1.2% average annual return. On March 23, the loss is 16%. In other words, if I am panic, then it will take me 16 years to recover. I am a 53 year old, and after 13 years, I will be 66 year old.

More calculation

It takes me another 20 minutes to make some modification on market change calculation.

Your Portfolio Is Due For Maintenance. Here's How To Check It

Here is the article.

I have to learn how to manage my portfolio better. I just set up a new portfolio called Victoria with $45,000 Canadian dollars on Questrade.com, and also a portfolio called Key Largo (name with an island on Key West, Florida USA) $19,200 US dollars on Ameritrade.com, a 401 K with Charles Schwab.com with Par.

One of ideas is to keep reading more content related to management of portfolio.

Investment or speculation - 前面还有很多坑

Dec. 26, 2019

Introduction

It is time for me to prepare a blog so that I can share two other friends about my investment experience. We will have a dinner party in the city of Surrey.

Investment or speculation

It is not easy to summary what I have learned. I chose to share those two books first.

First book is "The smartest investment book You'll ever read, The simple, Stress-Free way to reach your investment goals",  Daniel R. Solin

Second book is "The Bogleheads' Guide to Investing", Talyor Larimore, Mel Lindauer, Michael LeBoeuf, Foreword by John C. Bogle

Here are my 2019 December review of my portfolios.

Scotia US index fund
Scotia Canada index fund
Par 401 K
Victoria portfolio
Key Largo portfolio

Actionable Items

It is easy to go for speculation because of fear and greedy human nature. I should invest time to read books about investment, and work on my finance literacy. Once I make a mistake like time the market, sell off in 2009, I can realize my problem and make corrections as soon as possible. And also I have community to help me realize and learn how to invest as well.

Victoria TFSA portfolio - How to find opportunities in bear market?

April 12, 2020

Introduction

It is my high standard requirement. I like to challenge myself and seek the opportunity to increase my portfolio value $5000.00 dollars.

Case study

I have market value gain before  the first circuit break around $2700 dollars, now on April 10, 2020, I have market value loss around $2200 dollars. So the gap is around $5000 dollars.

I just did Victoria balance history review, and also VAB.TO $3600 opportunity loss because I was lazy and did not take trade seriously on March 10, 2020 morning.

I should get up 6:00 AM, and stayed in front of computer, and track my portfolio 30 minutes to 60 minutes through those one month time from Feb. 26 to March 26.

How to find opportunities?

Coronavirus is still the biggest issue for global economy. Trump president likes to open USA economy before May 1, rolling base. What are the challenges? over 10 million people lose job, and people cannot pay rent, mortgage, and also a lot of issues.

Sharesight - How to run historial cost report for Victoria portfolio?

April 14, 2020

Introduction

It is interesting for me to think about how and when to run historical report using Sharesight. I like to push myself to come out some idea how to analyze my portfolio based on SPX index.

Case study

Let me show SPX history from Feb. 21 to April 14, 2020.

I can easily check balance history and also each position gain/ loss through the report.
