Why do people claim that most software engineers would never be promoted to principal in big companies, such as Google, Facebook, and Amazon?

Here is the answer I like to analyze.

I have two classmates in FAU who are/ were principle engineers in Microsoft. I also went to Microsoft SQL server event a few years ago, I met two principle managers as well.
