高盛前CEO自传教会了我什么?
作者Robert Rubin,前美国财务部部长,前高盛CEO。履历牛逼哄哄,先后毕业于哈佛和耶鲁,在高盛公司工作了26年,又从政了6年半,退位后又去花旗银行工作了4年,还是高管。他在从政期间,发生了好几起国际性的金融危机,特别有名的就有墨西哥金融危机,97年金融危机,也算见证了中国经济的崛起。
在他卸任后,美国也发生了911和土耳其金融危机。他经常被采访介绍一些他对政治的看法。
这本书虽然有中文版本,但是真心不推荐,因为翻译的太差了。相比之下,很庆幸自己看的是英文原版。
这本书读起来有2大收获:1)一个大佬和你分享他的求学和求职经历;2)他是怎么处理各种职场的危机特别是后期从政带来的各种困境。
这本书最好的精华在于大佬分享了很多当时在华盛顿碰到的困境,比如为了获取参众议员的选票就要做很多妥协。读到这里,再看到目前众议院议长在经历了十几轮的选举才终于出炉,多少有些让我有了更深刻的体会。
以下是一些有用的精华:
1. 概率思维:合理的决策基于各种变量,并将每个变量的概率加以考虑。但这不是一个数学过程,还需要加上自己的主观判断和经验值。鲁宾阐释他概率思考的最典型的例子就是处理墨西哥危机,各种因素都考虑到,决定了,就义无反顾,一切的结果听天命了。nothing in life is certain and that, consequently, all decisions are about probabilities
2. 经商和从政最大的不同在于:商业领域通常非常关注客户和员工,但归根结底,一切都会回归到为盈利这一首要目标服务——也许只有一小部分企业活动致力于慈善事业和其他公共目的。 相比之下,政府的公共部门的运作有许多社会的目标,而不仅仅为单一目标服务。
3. 虽然很多人觉得解决争议最好的方式就是努力找到双方共同点。但是从政的时候,Robin发现有时除了冷静地采取坚定立场外,没有其他好的选择。
4. 华尔街和政府做出决策之间的差异: 即使情况发生再大的变化,华盛顿都要坚持总统的决定。因为全世界都在关注你是否信守承诺。 信誉和可靠性是政治最大的价值观。
5. Robin当年是耶鲁法学院的高材生,毕业后他毅然从律所辞职反而去经商,这在当年算是降级了。但是从他的反思来看,他觉得高盛的套利部非常适合他,因为套利的原理就在于概率,这和他的看法是一致。能找到和自己契合的工作并终于自己的内心,这点来说非常了不起。
6. 专注力是客服焦虑途径:Robin是从一个很普通的中学考进哈佛的,他在入学的时候都害怕自己最后会被退学。但是一年后他拿到了全A,并且还是荣誉学员。他自己分享得出的结论就是他做起事来忘掉一切的专注力;也要有听天命的豁达。翻译原文是这么说的“在某个时候,你应该爬上“山顶”并进行自我反省。 但在日常生活中,你应该关上大忧虑的大门,专注于手头的任务。 我试图接受这个建议,并排除关于我是否有能力在哈佛从事这项工作的问题。”
7. 在高盛的套利部门工作压力同样很大。公司里的人都认为压力太大,会把人逼疯。 但Robin既能全神贯注,又能保持适度的平静。 在他的脑海里有这样的想法,如果不得不离开,可以回到左岸的咖啡馆,读亨利·米勒的书。 另一个令人平静的想法是,一千年后,没有人会关心是否完成了某些交易,或者他的职业生涯是否成功。
8. 你无法用绝对的方式证明任何事情,生活是充满各种可能性、各种选择和利弊权衡。 在一个没有可证明的真理的世界中,改进剩余概率的唯一方法是通过更多的知识和理解。
9. 赚钱无法成为你的人生目标:作者原话是making a lot of money might satisfy them in some ways but wouldn’t fulfill whatever had driven them to want that money in the first place.
10. 作为领导人,最主要的职责就是做决定。即使你获取的信息不完善并且你提的问题无法全部回答。 但你必须要做那个决定,并承担相应的风险。
11. 为什么牛逼的CEO通常都会有很多社会职责或者担任很多其他的头衔?Robin发现因为生活和工作的各个方面都是协同作用的,在一个领域的努力有助于在其他领域取得成就。 除了在日常工作中取得相当大的成就外,参与的各种社会活动都可以赋予他职业生涯的意义。这里大佬想要传达的意思应该是圈层和人脉。从Robin自身来看,高盛是他最初的基础,从这个坚实的基础上,他能够向各个方向伸出援手——非营利组织和慈善组织、专业协会、政治,最终在华盛顿从事第二职业。
12. Robin的管理风格也借鉴了很多人,从怀特海德那里,他学会了如何在日常业务的压力下专注于战略,思考高盛在未来几年的发展方向。 从温伯格那里,学会了如何与人打交道,包括客户和同事,以及如何认真、尊重地对待他人的观点,即使不同意他们的观点。
13. 如何管理危机:首先,在管理危机时,至关重要的是不要让它严重干扰您的业务开展。 将这种风险降至最低的一种方法是指定一个小团队来处理危机。 其次,在危机期间走出去会见客户的重要性。 客户有很多问题,公司必须回答他们。 第三,你必须经常与你自己的人交流,特别是因为媒体可能会强调消极的一面。 第四,关于媒体,你只需要咬紧牙关,熬过早期的粗暴报道——你通常可以' t影响最初的风暴。 你能做的就是坦诚面对任何情况,肯定你解决问题的承诺——如果这与特定情况相关——并对未来充满信心。
14. 最后通篇看完这本书,我发现基本作为大佬都有一个最大的优点,那就是非常清楚自己的优缺点,也知道自己要什么。作者的这句哈写的非常好:I’ve long believed: you take yourself with you wherever you go, so you had better know who you are.
